There isn't exactly a ton of available space in trade schools, and job prospects for someone with no advanced education or trade training are pretty poor.
  2. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 04:51 PM) Apples to oranges. Civil right protests vs the majority party refusing to vote on a bill they have no obligation to vote on. Individuals v. Lawmakers. The comparison fails. The tactic is the same, and that's what's been called childish. It was also groups of people working together deliberately, not individuals. Was it childish when Republicans pulled a similar stunt in 2008? Where was the indignation back then?
  3. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 03:42 PM) Trump. For example, a fundraising email stating that you will throw your political opponent in jail once you win is pretty far off 'more of the same' American politics, but it's also pretty terrible.
  4. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 04:17 PM) It's absolutely childish to sit on the floor and pout when you don't get what you want. When my 4 year old does that in a store, he gets punished. I don't commend him for taking a stand. Were labor and civil rights activists acting childish when they conducted sit-ins?
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 04:08 PM) /both sides Yeah, for once actually a legit case of both sides actually doing essentially the same thing.
  6. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 03:51 PM) I was actually arguing with Tex over school funding in that thread ( I reread about 10 pages there) and TBH didn't even notice it then, or I am sure I would have commented in some form or fashion. I can't tell you now what i would or would not have said then. You tried calling me out by name for saying things I never said that were pretty easy to check. You're also not answering the question: do you think the Republicans were "childish" in 2008? Is every instance of BREAKING THE RULES! childish? Yeah, the one that correctly noted that it was a publicity stunt to get some attention for their policy goals, the same as this latest round.
  7. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 03:28 PM) Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker's Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers. "You're not covering this, are you?" complaining one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans "morons" for staying on the floor. The Capitol Police are now trying to kick reporters out of the press gallery above the floor, meaning we can't watch the Republicans anymore. But Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) is now in the gallery talking to reporters, so the cops have held off for a minute. Clearly, Democrats don't want Republicans getting any press for this episode. GOP leaders are trying to find other Republicans to rotate in for Blunt so reporters aren't kicked out. Democrats faced a choice here - should they leave the cameras on and let Republicans rip Pelosi & Co. on C-Span, or should they leave the cameras off and let the Republicans have their "tantrum," as one Democratic aide characterized it, with the cameras off They do it so they can go make videos for their campaign and they can go "hey, look what I'm doing over here in Washington for our district!" So in just one post there were morons and tantrums. If you want to play the semantics game, nobody said 'childish'. That's an article you're quoting, not a SoxTalk poster. Was it childish when Republicans did it? Did you get very upset that they BROKE THE RULES then?
  8. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 01:39 PM) Is a hand saw enough to cut aluminum downspouts? Or do I need to find something stronger? I just need to cut like 3 or 4 pieces down to size. fine-blade hacksaw would be best.
  9. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 12:34 PM) Did the media applaud the R's then? Did you think it was a good thing that the minority party did whatever they could, or did you make snide comments about how childish they looked? Goes both ways. It was still childish and Mr. Lewis looked like he would rather be anywhere else than sitting on the floor, and the fact that he as one of the participants doesn't make it any less childish. Seems like it was largely just ignored here. Going back to the old dem and rep threads, everyone was focused on the Presidential campaign. There were a handful posts in the rep thread starting at the bottom of the linked page, but nothing really negative. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...6038&st=435 http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...6039&st=315 Notably absent are any posts condemning it as "childish."
  10. I don't care if they "BROKE THE RULES!!" of procedure in the House, pretty lol that anyone really would. In 2008, Republicans did something similar for even longer, running their own version of the House AGAINST THE RULES! (gasp!) in order to press for a vote on issues they wanted. Using what power/tactics you can when you're the minority party to draw attention to your causes isn't acting childish any more than early 1900's labor sit-ins and 60's civil rights sit-ins were childish. John Lewis "BROKE THE RULES!" when he participated in those, too.
  11. The latest BENGHAZI! investigation report was released today. Shockingly, it found pretty much no new information and nothing important after 2 years.
  12. It was essentially the House version of a filibuster. It's definitely for publicity, but it didn't hold up any legitimate business or post a threat to anything, and Republicans have used a similar tactic before.
  13. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 11:03 AM) I'm convinced Clinton is a lock. Trump may get a short term bump at some point, but just let him talk...the more he talks, the more he buries his own chances. I pretty much agree there. Barring some major unforeseen event (and even a terrorist attack probably wouldn't do it, given how poorly he responded Orlando), Trump doesn't really stand a chance given 1) how disliked he is and 2) how incompetently his campaign is being run And that's more or less why I'm voting for her come November, plus the ever-important SC nomination(s).
  14. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 10:53 AM) Sure, if you want to inject timelines into it...but I've been around long enough to have seen Hillary pander, too. Trump is just another animal, and my opinion on him is clear as day around here, and has been from the start...he's a troll, and I STILL believe he's doing this for nothing but ego stroking fame that keeps his name in the news. I can't take him seriously as a presidential candidate regardless of his policy stances, whether they change from minute to minute means nothing since I don't take them seriously in the first place. That being said, I don't take much of what Hillary Clinton says at face value, either...she's just a professional on an entirely different level than Trump is. She's in a different league. Trump is playing the game of politics. Hillary Clinton was practically born into politics, molded by it...kind of like how Bane was born into and molded by darkness. Yes, I do want to inject timelines into it because it's a pretty big difference if you change your stances over the course of years/decades versus over the course of seconds/hours. I agree that Trump's stroking his ego, but he's still the Republican nominee and has a (outside) shot at being President. Clinton, like every candidate for President ever, knows that they won't get 100% of their agenda put into place. She'll almost definitely have to deal with a Republican House and possibly with a Republican Senate. Running on a policy platform that can't be completely enacted isn't "pandering" to me, but that's just a semantic quibble. She's otherwise fairly upfront with what she wants, and her history gives a pretty good indication of how she'd govern (center-left but moving more liberal, hawkish). Trump is playing the game of ego-stroking reality TV star narcissist who spouts nonsense and hate pretty much non-stop.
  15. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 10:50 AM) This fantasy world you live in where Hillary Clinton doesn't pander to her crowds...where do you find it? I know, everything Trump says is a lie, and everything Clinton says is fact...again, what drugs are you on? No, seriously. I live in the real world where Trump changes his policies sometimes literally mid-sentence and Clinton does not. That doesn't really have anything to do with lies or thinking Clinton is infallible (she isn't, I'm not thrilled with her and didn't vote for her in the primary). But it's simply delusional to cling to the same 'not a dime's worth of difference' garbage when it comes to Trump.
  16. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 10:48 AM) The point was she's just as guilty of pandering as Trump is. And that's what Trump is doing, he's pandering. As for her policy, it's easy to push policy you know won't get passed, it's quite different when you're pushing it as president. This is only true if you don't actually look at how frequently Trump and Clinton change their policy positions. Trump gives a different policy at different times on the same day.
  17. QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 10:22 AM) I mowed our lawn for the first year that we lived in our house. I enjoyed doing it but the time that it took for me to do both front and back yards (about .25 acre) it just wasn't something I could do anymore. We have to much s*** to do on the weekends. We had to hire a lawn service which is about 100 bucks a month but its money well spent. I dont worry about my lawnmower giving me problems every other week and I dont have to factor in 3 hours of my time every weekend being wasted on cutting grass. We went from about 1/4 acre in Woodridge and cutting it with a push mower to about 1 acre in Homer and cutting it with an (old) lawn tractor. It takes me about half the time now, around an hour.
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 10:30 AM) Clinton has run on basically the same platform as 8 years ago minus all of the health care items. She has had 3-4 major policy pushes this campaign that get zero coverage. She's been in public policy on a national level for 25 years. That's basically the same as a guy who changes his policy positions mid-sentence. Where do we stand on the Muslim Ban today? All Muslims? Some Muslims? Some Muslims plus anyone from "terrorist" countries? It changed over the weekend between the 14th and 18th holes, and it's changed a couple of times since then, too.
  19. Trump promised millions to charity. We found less than $10,000 over 7 years.
  20. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 27, 2016 -> 05:22 PM) Fired my landscaper yesterday. Just wasn't getting the job done. Considering taking over the job myself on a weekly basis, but hiring someone to come in once a quarter or something to sort of "clean things up." Property is about an acre. Priced out some riding mowers and other tools and I honestly think I could buy all the equipment and it would pay itself back within a year, given what I pay to have the work done for me. Anyone here have one of those zero turn mowers? I have a crapload of trees so this looks like the best option. My father in law got one a couple of years ago and he loves it. Most of my neighbors have one. I've just got a regular one and it's a bit of a PITA to turn around obstacles, but it was free so can't complain too much.
  21. It's interesting calling a sit in lead by a civil rights legend childish
  22. It's only June and Trump's already unskewing the polls

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 26, 2016 -> 03:16 PM) Which is funny, because Gold is up a lot this year, and especially after Brexit. still well below the early 2010's level when all of the snake oil guys were saying that gold can only go up!
