  1. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jun 17, 2016 -> 08:54 AM) Thanks for that. Islam does not hold a monopoly on anti-gay bigotry. Remember, the folks that pushed Uganda to institute capital punishment for homosexuality were spurred on by "Christian" members of the clergy. There are all sorts of pastors who preached last Sunday about how they should be happy that there were "50 fewer sodomites" in this world that day. Violence against LGBT communities happens on a daily basis, and that violence isn't limited by religion. The same day as the Orlando massacre, a 20 year old non-Muslim white kid from Indiana was arrested by the LAPD with a bunch of weapons and ammunition who was heading to the pride parade to do basically the same thing as Orlando.
  2. QUOTE (juddling @ Jun 17, 2016 -> 01:13 AM) I always said he should have a press conference and say "ladies and gentlemen I would like to introduce my VP choice......... **music starts** OH MY GOD...IT'S VINCE KENNEDY MCMAHON..........
  3. So Trump may have just been taking the "run a campaign as a grifting scheme" to levels far beyond what previous grifters ever dreamed of.
  4. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 16, 2016 -> 12:30 PM) I installed custom wainscoting when I finished part of my basement, including up the stairs. I would get to certain points where I would be stumped for days trying to figure out the best way to work the angles. You don't think about the little things at the start of the project. It's not until you get to that point, then it becomes a hurdle. This is where having an engineering background and 3D CAD at work has helped me a few times, especially when I built a new deck/staircase at our previous house. Lots of little minor tweaks to the design on the computer when I would realize "wait, I can't built that that way." Had a good idea of every board and cut that had to be made before I even bought the wood. The village permit office also appreciated a set of real plans rather than crayon scribbles on a napkin they usually get. A lot of that is stuff that a pro would have breezed right by because they've run into the same thing a dozen times before, but it's always harder figuring it out the first time. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 16, 2016 -> 12:36 PM) Yeah I think 3 is going to be your best shot, but that'll take some accurate cuts to look good. In my experience even the best cut/fill/paint job ends up cracking or needing a touchup after a season or two with the wood contracting/expanding. It'll be something that I'll notice forever but nobody else would ever be at eye-level (hopefully).
  5. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 16, 2016 -> 12:28 PM) Tough to say without looking at all of this in person but: (1) can you use a thinner riser covering and/or no covering at all, just paint the 2x stair? That'd set the nose back a little more. That's a decent thought. Don't know why the flooring store sold me 1/2" thick risers, a 1/4 or even 1/8" veneer would be fine oh yes it will look terrible I actually made a sketch of that same idea earlier! I'm just not sure how well it'll work/how well I could pull it off. Something like this:
  6. I need to post some before/after pictures of my master now that that's 99% done (some minor trim patching and painting left, waiting to do that at the same time as the stairs).
  7. It is T&G (prefinished engineered) Look at the corner where the existing builder stairs 2x's come to a point. It's more or less flush with the stair skirt board, and that's not something that can be changed short of tearing out and rebuilding the whole staircase. Any additional thickness on the stairs, any nosing at all will have the ends sticking out past the skirt board. I already know that I need to rip down the last board on each stair, but it's not about the depth from the back of the tread to the front that's giving me the problem. It's that the existing skirt board is flush with the existing 2x stairs.
  8. Teddy would take a gutshot and still keep coming after Trump in a quixotic 3rd party campaign.
  9. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 07:27 PM) A small part of me wants to question them (who goes into a large body of water in Florida?), but, I mean, they lost their 2 year old son. Isn't that enough punishment? And it's not like they were swimming. He was just barely in the water. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 07:53 PM) Yea, you think about the horror of them seeing it and having to live with it, I don't think piling on is necessary QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 11:02 PM) Yeah, the father tried to pry a gator's mouth open, failed and watched his son dragged away. They're suffering plenty. yup
  10. No idea whose trim that is, though it is very similar to my in-laws'. I just used that as an example photo. We've got white tall trim with 1/4 round in the areas we've started to remodel, but it's a little more simple than that. We've found we both really like the craftsman style, which is nice because it's typically easier! The stairs used to be carpeted, which covered up some of the shoddy original building. Even if the nose of the new floor was flush with the existing riser, it'd still stick past the skirt boards as shown in the first photo. It was hard to get a good angle to show the overhang, so I threw together this quick sketch: I can't really do anything to modify the existing "builders stairs," so I don't know what you mean by cutting back the tread. The overhang in the first photo is correct, the overhang in the second is too far. The nosing of the underlying builder's stair has already been cut back flush with the existing riser. This is more or less the end product I want, but the existing skirt board was just put in in a really stupid way. edit: This may be the time to admit defeat and call in the professionals, though.
  11. Any carpenters here that could give some advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm a ways into a project of installing 9/16" pre-finished engineered hardwood flooring in my bedroom, upstairs hallway, and down our main flight of stairs. Most of it has been straight forward, but the stairs have me stumped due to the way they were originally built. Simple "builder's grade" stairs out of 2x, but the stair skirt boards aren't tall enough. When I go to put the new stair nosing on, it'll overhang the skirt by a good 1/2"+. My initial thought is to try to build this up somehow with 1x, but I'm not really sure if that's the best approach. The more challenging part is where the top set of stairs hits a small landing. The top skirt board and stair nose/riser sticks out past the drywall quite a bit, and once the new riser and nose are on, it'll be a couple of inches. My only thought so far is to try to make something like this corner trim block shown on this floor trim here. I've really stalled out on this project trying to figure out the next step here.
  12. The current attack plan seems to be "sit back and and watch him destroy himself," but I do agree that that seems somewhat light. Buzzfeed, WaPo and others have already dug up more than that. Keep in mind though, it's dated from last December. They've had another six months to dig deeper even if that is all they had back then.
  13. Trump thinks the DNC leaked it themselves, but I don't see how that makes any sense whatsoever. It seems like it contains a summary of legitimate information with quotes/sources, but it's all relatively easily publicly sourced info rather than some of the deeper stuff oppo research at this level usually digs up. Trump's been saying dumber things loudly at a rapid pace lately, so I'm not sure how useful it really even is.
  14. QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Jun 14, 2016 -> 04:47 PM) Russia apparently hacked into the DNC. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politic...trump/85867116/ Looks like somebody sent the Trump oppo file to Gawker: http://gawker.com/this-looks-like-the-dncs...file-1782040426
  15. QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 01:53 PM) In the bankruptcy world (majority of my practice), we have to disclose source of compensation in all cases that we file on behalf of debtors. And if I file a Chapter 11 for someone who gets the funds from a different entity, I have to show that I gave that other person or entity informed consent that they are not the client. I don't see why that's a problem generally - particularly since a lawyer's duty of loyalty is to their client, not the one paying the bills. That's another part of it. The legal choices in some of the cases seem to favor damaging gawker over maximizing the outcome for the client
  16. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 01:50 PM) I did, they don't mention specifics. You're assuming every case is frivolous. What if they're not? I'm not saying they are. That's not the issue people have with theil here.
  17. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 01:48 PM) How do you prevent that though? Is it even possible? No this is an argument about ethics.
  18. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 01:05 PM) Gotta link? I'm curious to see what they dropped and why. Here's the NYT piece that revealed Theil's involvement: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/26/business...ith-gawker.html Hogan settled with the man who made the tape for $5k. Rather than including a claim that would have allowed them to involve Gawker's insurance company, they went for the longshot and got it. Gawker's since filed bankruptcy, and there's no way Hogan ever sees $140M. In the end, this legal strategy will likely result in less money for Hogan but more damage to Gawker. I'm not a lawyer, but I've had to take ethics courses for my profession, and that sort of behavior doesn't strike me as particularly ethical. Note too that this case is still being litigated in appeals court. It's entirely possibly that Gawker will either have the verdict overturned entirely or that the award could be substantially reduced, but Gawker is still a bankrupt company because of this. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 01:19 PM) And really, other than scale, how is his financial backing any different than any other contingency fee case? Lawyers finance lawsuits all the time. Does it really matter if it's a third party doing it instead? QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 01:20 PM) State Farm et al can make the same sorry argument. They get sued thousands of times a day in relatively bulls*** lawsuits. Again, that's part of the business. Don't become a sensationalist blog if you don't expect to piss people off and get sued as a result. I don't think State Farm has someone funding a long-running shadow legal campaign with the specific intention of bankrupting them as a company. I think using the court system to overwhelm an enemy with lawsuits and drive them into bankruptcy over a personal vendetta is what makes it different.
  19. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 12:30 PM) Claims without any merit generally get tossed. And sometimes claims that should be tossed or found against end up winning. And in both cases, it can cost huge sums of money to defend. That's the legal harassment strategy. It's not like Theil invented this. Every big company is going to win some cases and lose others. edit: the NYT story from a few weeks back found that the lawsuits Theil secretly funded would pursue legal strategies in such a way so as to maximally inflict harm on Gawker, not necessarily to get the best results for the plaintiff. E.g. in the Hogan case, they dropped all of the claims that would have allowed Gawker's legal insurance to cover the judgements.
  20. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 12:19 PM) Defending lawsuits is the price of doing business. If you don't do anything wrong, you shouldn't be concerned about being wiped out financially. Gawker is a company worth tens of millions if not hundreds of millions. They have an ample budget for legal expenses. They're trying to spin this into some rich guy v. poor company crap and i'm not buying it. Don't post private sex tapes and out people who don't want to be outed and this wouldn't be a problem for them. This is a great example of the internet bully crying foul once someone finally stands up to him and holds him accountable for being a dick. But a company worth tens of millions can be sued forever by a guy worth billions, and eventually some balls are going to bounce your way. I don't think you'd be cool if someone filed lawsuit after lawsuit against you for over a decade over a personal slight even if you hadn't done anything legally wrong. Legal fees can still ruin people financially when they're in the right.
  21. That's true for TSA PreCheck, but Global Entry interview centers are more limited.
  22. Gawker also filed for Ch.11 recently. Gawker may have had some crappy decisions, but they're not the only ones in danger of this sort of stuff. Similar lawsuits designed to harass the liberal magazine Mother Jones out of existence have benn tried, too.
  23. I think you need to reread or watch his speech because you misunderstood his message. Calling out radical ideologies as radical is not bad, and it's not something Obama said he's against. There's a gigantic excluded middle between "don't claim all Muslims are suspect and have knowledge of terrorist plots" and "don't criticize any political ideology ever." Edit I guess the better question here is whether you agree with trump and other Republicans about the need to shout radical Islam frequently, or if you agree with Obama that that's a useless political talking point and this is just one of your harder flails in trying to prove that anyone but conservatives are actually responsible for the toxic ideology and their preferred candidates like trump and Cruz?
  24. Ss2k5 please explain how Republican presidential nominee donald trump claiming that current president Obama is a Kenyan Muslim foreign agent is actually the fault of the Democrats, I'm lost on this one!
