QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 11:14 AM) How long does it take to resolve this? I imagine months. Is water at that high of risk even unsafe to bathe in? Flint is still largely supplied by lead pipes. That was okay when they were getting water from Detroit, but when the Snyder-appointed Emergency Manager switched the city to Flint River for its water, the pipes started suffering from some pretty severe corrosion due to the pollution in the river water. My understanding is that the lead pipes were more or less like asbestos--perfectly fine if its left in place, intact and undisturbed, but once you've damaged it even slightly you really have no choice but to rip everything out. So, it will be a long time and it will be very, very expensive. As far as bathing, this story has some more info. Okay for adults and older children, probably not safe for young children and babies who may swallow some of the water.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 13, 2016 -> 12:15 PM) National Guard and FEMA are being brought in to help. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/13/us/troop...WT.nav=top-news This clean-up and the inevitable civil lawsuits from poisoned citizens will cost orders of magnitude more than the original "savings." Fun side note: Michigan voters repealed the "Emergency Manager" law that let governor Snyder put whoever he wants in charge of failing cities, but then the state legislature just passed a repeal-proof version during the next session. This is how toxic Flint’s water really is People need to go to jail over this.

Man if I had won the powerball I'd fly to Bahrain right now just to see who's right. We need to get to the bottom of this ASAP.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 09:55 AM) The spin wasn't that he was/is a bumbling moron though, it was that he seemed to be boasting and taking credit for something as large and innovative as the internet (which was the meaning of his misquoted statement), like in the Snickers commercial....which for some reason I still remember. Yeah, and some of the actual inventors of the internet wrote a long editorial backing him up on what he said. Yet the "Al Gore invented the internet!" joke remains alive and well 17 years later despite him not actually saying that and actually being correct with what he was saying.
-
Al Gore also never actually claimed to have invented the internet, guess what sometimes people make jokes based on distorted quotes.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 08:52 AM) Right, because Joe Biden doesn't have the same long history and wasn't touted by Democrats as being this fabulous VP and even Presidential candidate. GMAFB. It was all because democrats in the mold of Jon Stewart like to make fun of Republicans for inane crap because they know their audience eats it up. No, Sarah Palin and Joe Biden do not have the same long history. One has a history of being an elected representative for a few decades who sometimes puts his foot in his mouth. The other was obviously and painfully dumb and has only reinforced the initial impression from day 1. Please tell me you're not actually trying to go to bat for Sarah Palin in the year 2016. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 09:06 AM) Sorry, you don't get to her position and do the things she did (national debates on television with millions watching) being a complete dumbass. Was she the smartest person ever? Hell no, but so what? That's not a standard that politicians/candidates have or should have. What does her being in a national debate have to do with whether or not she's qualified to be there? McCain's selection process for her was probably the worst thing about his campaign. What has Sarah Palin done since 2008 that tells you she's anything but not particularly bright/coherent?

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jan 15, 2016 -> 06:21 AM) As Hawk would say, "stretch" You can see the Sierras from the Diablo Range (just east of Oakland) on a clear day and that's right around the same distance. Don't know if she's full of crap or not, but "science" doesn't necessarily say you can't see Iran from Bahrain. eta you can definitely see the sierras from the west side of Sacramento and that's a good 60-70 miles, it's not as obviously bulls*** as "hurr science says you can only see 12 miles hurr" eta2: It's probably more likely than not that Pelosi was FOS, but the bad math (which is what this is, not 'science') annoyed me because I know I've personally seen things that are 100ish miles away on clear days.
-
There are 4-5k foot mountains on that coast of Iran, maybe they could be seen on an especially clear day if you were also in tall building? Palin got made fun of because it was just another thing in a long line of examples of her being not very bright back when conservatives were insisting that she was this huge new threat to Democrats and represented the wave of the future.

The right-wing attacks on Nikki Haley are interesting given how much she governs like a right-winger.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 08:15 AM) I'm glad you all are so entertained by four hours of campfire shots to break up the exciting walking shots. I would legit just watch a beautifully shot movie of walking through the Canadian Rockies for 3 hours so I may be a little biased.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 07:56 AM) Only big surprise with Oscar nominations is Tom Hardy getting supporting nom for The Revenant which I'm happy about. Don't think he was getting recognized anywhere else. His performance was pretty damn solid. bmags I'm sorry you don't like good movies edit: I hadn't heard all of the "only filmed in natural lighting" etc. hype about the movie before seeing it, but holy hell was the background lighting absolutely beautiful during the final confrontation. The bear attack CGI was really, really good and seemed like an accurate portrayal of grizzly attacks, but then the bison CGI scene looked terrible. I'm not sure what was going on there. The movie could have been about 20 minutes shorter and didn't need so many flashbacks.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 13, 2016 -> 03:30 PM) How many times does I-80 have a split with another interstate on the way, and do you know whether I-80 goes left or right at that split without signs??? I know which way to go until you get to SLC, I guess then it gets pretty messy looking at the maps so that would have probably thrown me off.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 13, 2016 -> 03:19 PM) Interesting question that got posed to me on another board: Suppose that none of the following things existed: GPS; maps (paper or online); any highway signs (route numbers, road names, exit signs, mile markers, directional signs); any signs bearing the name of any state, county or city; billboards Without all of the above things, and without the ability to ask anybody for any help, what is the farthest specific point from your home that you are confident you could drive to without making any wrong turns? Assume you can split up the trip so that you are always driving in daylight if that helps. I think I could make it to a point in Wisconsin about 700 miles from home. San Francisco or New York City, but that'd be like literally four turns to get on I-80 and then a straight shot so it's kinda cheating. I could make it to Manitowoc/Two Rivers easily but that's not especially far.

They were taking down BLM fences the other day, and claimed that it was done at the request of a local rancher who was going to lose his ranch otherwise. Rancher says he doesn't know what they're talking about.
