And when he was at his lowest, when he needed $10 for bus fare to get to church, God provided. When he was out of money again, this 'experiment' to find the most honest student came up, and he miraculously got another $10. Some groups of people eat up stories like this uncritically. It reaffirms their own faith. That's where Carson's base of support comes from, and now that he's stepping out of a pretty cloistered world into the mainstream, these sorts of stories aren't just accepted as a matter of fact.

A flat tax wouldn't eliminate the IRS. Tax brackets are the easy part, and if you're like most people with a simple w2 and a standard deduction, taxes are really simple. What makes it complicated is determining what actually counts as taxable income and what's deductible and what tax credits you have.
