Is Kansas a Laughingstock or Do You Not Care?
StrangeSox replied to greg775's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 07:50 PM) Harm has nothing to do with it. It's your belief, end of story. And really, your fear of being harmed by a gun entering your business is about as ludicrous as a gay guy raping someone in a shower full of straight men. This is why it's better to let everyone be a racist/homophobic/gun-hating prick. Everyone will be hated equally and the world can move on. You can say that because you'll have essentially zero personal negative impact. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 07:14 PM) As SS said, I dunno that that's true. And I guarantee that's the next step in this debate - is it constitutional to bar someone entry into a business for doing something that's constitutionally protected. But really, you're a hypocrite. You don't agree with something that someone does/is, and you're fine discriminating against them. When the "something" is what you support, it's terrible. When it's not, it's acceptable. I assume you support the no gun sign provisions in the various concealed carry laws - how is that any different from what Kansas and other states are trying to do here? It's not hypocritical to make distinctions. But please, keep comparing human sexuality being used as a reason to discriminate to people not wanting deadly weapons carried into public places. -
The state seems to be running much better since democrats got supermajority control and things could actually pass. The supermajority rules in California made it very difficult to govern without that sort of majority.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 07:04 PM) But everyone hates the gays! Yes, Texas was just on the verge of repealing their ban before this federal ruling, and we definitely don't have a bunch of states formally legalizing anti-gay bigotry. Good job refuting your own terrible argument.
-
Federal judge in Texas strikes down that state's same-sex marriage ban. That makes it the fourth state in recent months, following Utah, Virginia and Oklahoma.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 05:08 PM) Of course the problem is I could ask them to leave the weapon outside, so it doesn't exactly work. I also am struggling to figure out how two men kissing will kill me. IIRC depending on the state, "no firearms" signs aren't legally enforceable. -

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 12:36 PM) No, I agree that we have way too many laws on the books as it is. I think all these idiots that get to Washington, or the state capital as the case may be, feel the need to justify their time by making s*** up that doesn't need to be. These laws are a reaction to court cases in Colorado and New Mexico where state courts have found that sexual orientation is a protected class based on state law. It's not exactly necessary because Kansas, Arizona and Georgia don't have that listed explicitly as a protected class, but it's a way of providing clear instructions to the court that anti-gay bigotry is a-okay in their state. -

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 12:06 PM) because despite not being listed as a protected class, people ARE suing and wasting courts time and taxpayer money. They are a protected class in several states under state law. They aren't wasting courts' time or "taxpayer money," they're filing legitimate cases where their civil rights have been violated. -
These proposals have always been around, but they're never going to go anywhere.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 26, 2014 -> 10:28 AM) My favorite and only enjoyable part of business travel is when I've flown first / business (which is rare and our companies policy is only for flights over like 5 hours, which will happen on ocassions from the west to east coast). I really don't understand how an individual could pay a full first / business fare though (or logically justify the cost). Only way I'm ever doing it on my own dime is with my points. And that doesn't mean I enjoy flying, its just a lot less tiresome of an experience because you have space and service and somewhat edible food. basically this never happens.
-
I didn't travel much last year and lost my a-list preferred status, but for a while there I was getting A16 (the highest you can get without paying for business select) pretty consistently. OTOH, lots of people pay the extra $12 or whatever it is for the early check-in now, so even if you're refreshing every second when you get to the 24 hour window, you'll end up in the B's no matter what. Still beats their old system of having to arrive at the gate hours ahead of time to stand in line to get your boarding card, though. I'm not sure exactly what it'll impact, but SWA is upgrading their ticketing/reservation system in the near future. Their current one is really, really dated.
-
We flew Airtran to Puerto Rico three years ago, and it wasn't bad. Haven't really flown them since they've been merged with SWA, though.

Georgia and Arizona are getting in on the fun! -
Having to gate check your bag is the worst.

The first half through the rain forest is where I remember the one-lane bridges and steep drops. Once you get to the back side, you're on dry cattle ranches for the most part, but there is still beautiful landscape. We had no problem in a Camry or whatever generic sedan it was my parents had rented.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 25, 2014 -> 08:37 PM) After riding public transit for the better parts of 15 years, SWA just reminded me of boarding a train. The people who get there early, get the best seats. People who board later miss out. This hasn't really been true for southwest in a decade. They used to hand out boarding cards at the gate, but now you get your boarding position when you check in.

If you do the road to Hanna, go all the way around. The road on the backside was fine, at least in 2005, and the contrast from the rainforest side was incredible.

QUOTE (Knuckles @ Feb 25, 2014 -> 01:58 PM) Going to be hard to do with single fleet type. Not talking about Bahamas, Mexico or Canada. The new 737-800 can reach out to Hawaii but that's about the limit.

QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 25, 2014 -> 10:58 AM) The point that needs to be discussed is we are creating highly valued companies with very small work forces. That is a huge shift from huge companies = huge employers. That will produce a shift in how our society works. An optimist may suggest a 30 hour work week could be at hand with people job sharing. The pessimist could argue that huge unemployment will mean a global depression on a scale never seen before. The gulf between have and have nots will be huge. Swa is looking to become a full-blown international carrier in the future. They have some near-international flights now thanks to the airtran acquisition and have ideas about Canadian service.

QUOTE (Knuckles @ Feb 24, 2014 -> 10:26 AM) I used to follow F1 pretty religiously. My favorite driver is Robert Kubica however he is out of F1 these days because of the accident he suffered in Montreal years ago. Also the adult lifestyle makes it hard to keep up with races due to time difference. But I check results occasinally. I used to follow f1 and wrc pretty regularly, but just don't have the time these days

Everything in this thread is why my wife and I did a destination wedding and did not give one f*** what anyone thought.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 23, 2014 -> 12:39 PM) It's your wedding so do what makes you happy. However no we didn't, thank god.

Yeah, the Gap brands (Old Navy, Banana Republic, Gap) are pretty good about carrying tall sizes and up to 36" inseam in pants. JC Penney used to carry unhemmed pants that you could then get hemmed or hem yourself to the right length. Levi's can be purchased in 36" online as well. Shopping for pants is easily my most frustrating shopping experience.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 09:52 AM) I read $10B was the proposed multiple for DropBox and I crapped myself. Its a f***ing cloud. Maybe I'm a newb, but what the hell is such a difficult barrier to entry. Yes, they have market share, but how the hell are they a $10B (or even worse if it is truly valued at $20B) Company? Where is the logic. Earnings have been growing at a pretty high clip but you or I could start a company up and figure out how to do what they are providing and there are a lot of different people who have big server space out there that could jump into the cloud game to really keep them from ever having enough margins to be extremely profitable. Plus...I think even with all of their sales growth, DropBox is a $200 - $300M per year company in revenues. I can't imagine what Net Income is and EBITDA has to be significantly lower. The multiples of these tech companies are absurd and there is zero logic to them. I meant the what's app revenue
