I was pretty pleased. Do you guys remember last year?

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 13, 2015 -> 12:43 PM) Horrible play calling by the goal line I'm really frustrated they have not gone to Bennett at all in the end zone.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 12, 2015 -> 08:59 AM) so do you have anything to add to the actual topic or? Hah. No. To be honest, I have not had any time to keep up with current events recently.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 12, 2015 -> 07:09 AM) That comment is so absurd and out of bounds no one should have to respond to it. This is precisely the answer one would expect from you.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 11, 2015 -> 11:06 PM) I think southsider gave advice at least 10-15 times in that thread that seemed on point. Whether the moderators feel that an individual situation warrants a special fundraising drive/collection...I'm not sure that's a direction they would want to go. Someone also mentioned kickstarter, but this type of personal finance situation is a much harder sell than a Zach Braff or Veronica Mars movie. I would hope the uncle would get more involved in making sure the house is properly registered/classified so that his mother doesn't end up losing a home that has been in the family for many years. I'm not referring to ss2k.

All I will say is this...for as much as some of you guys like to get on your high horses and lecture the rest of us about how morally deficient we are, we had a thread where one of our own posters was faced with losing his home. Of course, not one of you so much as touched it. Not an offer of advice, not any research, nothing. Now maybe some of you reached out privately to the poster, and if that is the case, well then I take back what I said. But many of the same folks that are telling the rest of us all how we should be living happen to be absent when the rubber hits the road.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 11, 2015 -> 03:13 PM) Considering we've been hearing about this issue for a decade+ now maybe it's time for them to hire a competent electrician. I needed this laugh.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 7, 2015 -> 08:18 PM) VT plays the 46 bear defense. Ahh, makes sense. Guess I should have figured that out myself. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 04:34 PM) lol, seriously? Go back and read. If you don't believe it, don't believe it. It isn't like I made up some study to justify my position here. Are you sure you're not just making this up?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 04:15 PM) I have read the same stuff here and have a completely different opinion on what is being said... and I don't feel I am alone in that viewpoint. Some examples please?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 03:51 PM) Public shaming is absolutely the top reason rapes do not get reported. You cannot attribute discussion for "public shaming." Very few people in this thread have shamed this woman, whatever that even means, in this thread. We've been discussing and speculating as to what occurred, but I don't recall a whole lot of posters suggesting she should not have reported this if indeed she was raped.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 03:41 PM) It is also BY FAR the most underreported crime out there, exactly because of threads like this. Because of threads like this, people do not report rapes?
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 12:39 PM) Well it doesn't make sense to say "proven innocent" in the context of a trial. Ahh, fair point.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 8, 2015 -> 12:27 PM) FWIW being found not guilty and being "proven innocent" are not the same thing by a long shot. And neither is being convicted by the court of public opinion and actually being guilty of something unlawful.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Sep 7, 2015 -> 07:58 PM) Barrett is clearly more efficient to me. Jones is not a high percentage passer and seems more mistake prone. He's the better NFL prospect, but why should Ohio State give a s*** about that? Well I know you're pretty adept at understanding football, so I won't bother arguing much, but all you have to do is look at his size. You're just screwed because you can't bring him down unless committing to doing so, and as soon as you do that he lights you up with those receiving weapons he has. -

QUOTE (danman31 @ Sep 7, 2015 -> 07:38 PM) I will never understand Cardale Jones over J.T. Barrett. I can understand questioning it I suppose, but you can't understand it? -

Herbstreit just said something about the Chicago Bear defense and the way Virginia Tech came in and played the Buckeyes or something....I have no clue what he is talking about. -
QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 7, 2015 -> 08:27 AM) A couple weeks ago we welcomed our first grandchild into the world. He is the cutest baby, ever. :-) I've been a little busy since then with school starting and finding excuses to visit. Congrats, Tex!

QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 07:29 PM) Another added kicker is finding a home right after being kicked out. How does one find a place that won't check that stuff? Not sure about the Chicago market, but the Vegas market has places that do not do credit checks. When you say homeless, do you literally mean your family will be on the streets, or do you just mean you will lose the family home, but have somewhere else to go, such as a family member or friend's place? The ship may very well have sailed on your home, but most importantly is finding somewhere to go until you can stabilize things a bit.
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 06:09 PM) As an added kick to the groin this home has been in my family for 75 years. Another kick to the gut is that me and my sister BOTH started working. Long term, especially with rent now in the picture, that will help, but its just devastating to us that we're gonna lose this home. Perhaps my initially reaction is overblown and things will work out, but I just don't know how quickly we can get into a home. I guess that may be the main concern. Well you need to find a place to live above all else. Generally, you can find places that allow you to move in quickly. I'd start scraping together what money you can and try and find something that works at least temporarily.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 2, 2015 -> 05:23 PM) Essentially things have been really tough for a couple years. We live in a home that is paid off. We've just been paying not nearly enough of our property taxes. They've accumulated to 10 thousand dollars. We tried loans and all sorts of things. The last hope we had was a reverse mortgage. We got an appraisal a few weeks ago. Word just came back 2 bleeping days before the house goes up for auction that it is being appraised for only 25K. From what I understand we HAVE to make home improvements with this reverse mortgage and with what needs to be done 25K is not enough. Just a s***ty situation that I hate sharing with the public but right now its all I can do with the hope that we missed something we can do or if someone has a miracle up their sleeves. I thank everyone for reading and their concerns. Thanks...I'm sure it's tough to share that. I'm not sure what can be done about your home...does the auction winner need to at least assume the property taxes that are in arrears? What happens if no one bids? Secondly, if we assume you lose the home, is their no option to rent?
-
SCS, can you tell us more about your situation?

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Aug 29, 2015 -> 10:45 AM) What were the consequences when Adam Dunn came on and put up historically bad numbers? Nada. So of course LaRoche will be back. And guess what? So will Rick and Robin and the rest of the clown posse when they roll into Glendale next spring. However, doesn't mean the Sox will be a bad team. Because they have some very nice pitching, both in Chicago and on its way there. The problem is when you have an asset that underperforms THAT much, it does you virtually no good, unless you have another asset waiting to take its place, to cut bait at that point. There is more value in holding the asset than selling the asset for virtually nothing, unless you are forcing another asset to be significantly devalued by holding the underperforming one. -
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 28, 2015 -> 01:47 PM) I believe religion was created in a lot of ways to explain the un-explainable. I don't believe anyone will ever have the true answer of how we all came to be, so religion helps bridge that gap, because as a society we need answers to everything( I don't think that's a bad thing). I also think it helps a tremendous deal in dealing with death. My mother was not a religious person at all but when she was on her last years dealing with cancer, she got more religious and I believe it was a way for her to be more comofortable with what was coming in a very short time. And there is nothing wrong with that. I've always said if religion, or anything for that matter helps you get through the day, makes you feel better about yourself and isn't harmful to yourself, why would you deny yourself of that? I don't have to believe in a higher power to not understand why people enjoy it being part of their life. I consider myself a skeptic and think the original idea of "God" is incredibly far fetched, but I would also hope there is something more to life after we die. Doesn't mean I believe in God. Perhaps, but it seems to be utilized to control the uneducated masses today. The Catholic Church, for instance, preys on the poor in underdeveloped countries, selling them on an idea that, given their reality, is fairly difficult for them not to buy. "Jesus will take you to paradise!" Meanwhile, on earth, give us what little you have because it's your only chance at reaching the promised land. And oh, btw, you're not allowed to use birth control, so have a bazillion children and sell them the same nonsense.
