QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 29, 2014 -> 01:34 PM) Pretty much, he's the Sr Dir for the department, and he has shown a lot of preference over technical leaders compared to people leaders. Even if he viewed me as a future technical leader (which I don't think is my strength) it doesn't follow what I would want to do. While I fully think you need to understand the technology you manage in IT, I don't think the actual manager should be the technical leader, your engineers should be. He's looking (at least has indicated, again only 3 weeks but it's pretty apparent) they he wants engineers leading his teams. I don't agree with that since there's too much second guessing by the manager on his top engineers and the manager should be focused on developing/enabling his engineers to succeed rather than designing/building sytems. It's a difference in philosophy, and while there are cases it works I've seen it fail way more often then succeed, mainly because your technical leaders typically can't effectively lead people and that spawns way more issues then any pros you get from being the leader in that technical area. I've got a great reputation with his direct reports, but I honestly see a lot of them being pushed out or moving along. As mentioned, I'm just happy that I've been getting recognized outside of the department now, hopefully it leads to some good opportunities which may never have opened in Security anyways (it's a 40ish person department, much more limited then other departments). I don't disagree with that at all. We have a ton of technical experts in management positions here and while they do well with certain things, their teams are usually underdeveloped and unhappy. My wife works for one and he sucks.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 29, 2014 -> 12:18 PM) My department has a new leader as of 3 weeks ago. I know it's only 3 weeks but man I've got this feeling that this is NOT the guy I want to work for. He's a 180 from the leadership that I've had and not in a good way, fortunately I've been put in really tough situations lately and have performed really well and i'm getting noticed a lot. That may come in handy real soon as I'm not sure if I have a future in IT Security at my company or if I really want a future there anymore. Why not? What happened? Is it all because of this new guy?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 29, 2014 -> 05:58 AM) Interesting how I was reading James talking about BS and hearing statements by Hawk. Especially the part about all teams winning 50 and losing 50, although Hawk uses 60.

That was fabulous...I hope some of those who think they know everything will take this to heart a bit.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 12:29 PM) When my dog is excited and wants to play she always bites and uses her mouth, mainly biting on my arms. She also sometimes when we are playing will jump towards my face with her mouth open so she gets me with her teeth. Anytime we play around she always uses her teeth. Another weird thing she does; Sometimes when my girlfriend and I hug in front of her or we play fight, I tickle her, or anything of that sort she will start barking and growling at us or me but still has her tail wagging. She never gets aggressive and tries to attack one of us but I really want to know why she does that every time. I know she isn't going to hurt me but I feel like she is really trying to protect her "mom." When we first adopted her she was afraid of squeaky toys but now all she does is squeak the toys to try and get us to play with her. She was also afraid of the bathroom and would not set foot in it or get close, but now when we shower she will lay by the door waiting for us to get out and has no problem walking in the bathroom.. She is also very afraid of any cage. If I go near her cage she lowers her back and starts to run away. And when she does go in the cage she pants so much and if we are gone for an hour or so her paws and her chest will be soaked, it is so strange. We adopted her when she was 2 so I wish I knew how she grew up and what she was taught as a puppy and what happened to her. My oldest dane tries to wedge himself in between my wife and I if we get too close. The younger dane will actually growl and nibble at her, apparently because he is jealous. I wish I could clone him in case I have a daughter...he would be an ideal chaperone for her and her boyfriend one day...

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Oct 28, 2014 -> 05:15 AM) Puppies do that because they don't know any better. That's how they play. What you can try doing, is if she bites, make a cry or yelping type sound to show your displeasure and immediately stop playing with her. Wait for 30-60 seconds before showing her affection again. Over time, she will learn to soften how she bites/mouths and you can lower the threshold for what "hurts" until eventually the whole mouthing/biting thing is trained out of her. It's breaking a natural instinct/habit, so it's not going to happen over night or easily, but it does work. This is good advice...my hands and arms were scratched and marked up like crazy when my first dane was a pup...eventually he learned where that threshold was. Now, when he wants me to follow him somewhere, he literally grabs my arm with his mouth and leads me to where he wants to go, but he does it softly so that it isn't painful to me

I've seen that play to Alshon where he comes one way like he is running the fly sweep and then reverses field or whatever for a quick pass (I think we scored an easy TD versus GB on this play) mimicked by a few other teams, most notably by New Orleans last night against GB again. It did not work last night. Honestly, it just seems like we're playing tecmo bowl and we have 4 plays with maybe 3-4 variations on each and that is all we run. How many plays do we see Alshon start running down the line and then we either hand it to him, hand it to Forte, or fake it and go to Bennett in the seam? And can we please ROLL JAY OUT some more? There definitely seems to be some lack of creativity in the play calling, but it is so difficult to tell because we don't necessarily know what reads Jay is making. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 01:21 PM) I will say how Marshall went after a couple of the throws late in the blowout is unacceptable. It is unacceptable. It is unacceptable. It seems to me Marshall is about to be the problem he has been everywhere else. Some 8 catch days and a few wins will help, but am I the only one who has the feeling he is about to snap? It is probably a horrific comparison, but to me he is like an addict ready to relapse, not that he is an addict. For some reason, I feel I can see trouble coming. I do as well, but I see that because he senses he has lost Jay. I don't think it's because he isn't getting the ball. If you look at the guy who controls the destiny of your team and he looks like he doesn't give a s***, it tends to impact your own effort and attitude. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 12:52 PM) No discussion. 2013 Sox were bad. No one expected them to win a series or be real contenders. The Bears had expectations and were paper contenders. I don't think they were bad, I think expectations had been lowered. There was a lot of talent on that team. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 27, 2014 -> 11:13 AM) 7 points before halftime in the last 2 games. 7. And yesterday was so typical for Cutler. You had throws to Marshall that were telegraphed from the start (and obviously were batted down). You had him freaking out under pressure and killing a play before it was necessary to do so. You had the opposite - him failing to find a wide open Marshall on a blitz and instead taking a 10-12 yard loss sack (which resulted in a short field and another TD). You had the moronic fumble that went for a TD. Then for whatever reason he remembers that he has one of the best catching TE's in football and Bennett starts to open up the field. Forte ran pretty well (not great, but not bad) the entire game. But no matter, the game was lost before then. He f***ing sucks. There is no argument anymore. He's terrible. I don't know if it's the pressure. I don't know if it's because he's a moron that doesn't know the system as well as he claims. I don't know if it's because he and Trestman are not on the same page. At this point the why doesn't matter. This is an 8-8, no playoffs franchise while he is under center. Again, I think you're overreacting a bit, but you are right, hard to argue with some of your criticisms. One thing I read and heard in a few places was the Patriots believed if they took Jay's first read away, he would panic and drop his eyes down to the rush. That seems to be true of Jay at times. Rarely do you see him go through his progressions and scan the field. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 26, 2014 -> 02:09 PM) I don't know, the former NFLers in Jiggetts, Miller, Buffone and OB, thought the scheme for Gronk was awful. In fact, Buffone said TE have been killing the Bears all season, and they don't seem to be mixing it up to try and change it. I am just relaying what they said. I am certainly not a football technician. Yeah, on Gronk specifically, I tend to agree. But their problem the last month or so is they are having a hard time getting off the field and I just think all the new bodies have caught up with them. -

If they do it, I wouldn't complain, but I wouldn't expect someone to come in and resurrect the Ravens 2000 defense Yeah, this is personnel related more than scheme related right now. I'm most concerned about Trestman and our qb right now. -

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 21, 2014 -> 08:03 AM) I have a job that is probably about as high on the stability/reliability meter as there is, but I'm sick and tired of it. My wife is finishing school and will be employed in a few months, and I'm willing to risk that stability to find something that's meaningful to me. Plus I really don't like living down here. Everybody says I'm crazy, but that's how I feel. I hear you...everything has its pros and cons...I get sick and tired of the red tape and the politics, but if you're raising a young family, it isn't a bad place to be.
-
Steve, so let me get this straight...you've been working for this company for a few years now...I have followed this thread and read that you have been promoted several times in the last 18 months or so, your salary has more than doubled, etc. So at some point, the powers that be identified you as a top talent/successful leader/innovator and tapped you to lead a team to create and implement a separate product than what the core business of the company is, which is this digital marketing arm which you have successfully launched, but are still looking for your first client. Now, these same powers that be are thinking of pulling the plug on this project after like 3 months. Is that basically it in a nutshell? So say they did pull the plug, are they pulling the plug on the entire company or just the digital marketing arm you spearheaded? If the latter, will they pull you back into some other position within the broader company, or will they send you packing? Ultimately, you've got to watch out for Steve and Steve's family. I understand this is sort of your baby, but you've got a real baby on the way. Start looking or let it be known that you might be looking. My feeling is if these folks are bailing on this thing after three months, that this isn't going to be the last time you're going to be put under stress like this. I work for a utility company, and while I can start daydreaming about working for an organization that is a bit more dynamic or organic, there is something to be said for stability. There is something to be said for knowing the check is going to be in the bank every two weeks and it's going to clear. And there is something to be said for being on a career trajectory that is pretty much known, give or take a few variables. I watched a feature on Bill O'Brien, the coach of the Texans last night, and they were talking about how he took the HC position at Penn State after the Paterno/Sandusky mess, stabilized it, but then left for Houston after only two years. He was highly criticized in Pennsylvania for the move. Well, it turns out that Bill O'Brien has a son with a rare genetic disease and Texas Children's Hospital happens to be the largest children's hospital in the country, with many specialists who treat this very same disease his son has. The moral of the story is that jobs are just jobs. You make the best decisions for your career you can, and that may include loyalty to a company or to employees, but ultimately, you've got to watch out for Steve and Steve's family. Do what you think is best for them, and everything else be damned.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 20, 2014 -> 05:00 PM) Not nearly as exciting or important as most of the real jobs you older members posses, but it does appear I will FINALLY be moving on from my HS Chili's job that I've worked at for 6 1/2 years and moving up slightly to a part-time job at Costco. Still not the career job I am seeking, but in the meantime it pays much better, has great benefits, and *should* be a less hostile environment since my GM at Chilis and I do not get along very well. At the very least, this job may allow me to move out on my own if I can pull 30 hours or so a week. I should be making about $1200 or so a month which sadly is about 3x as much as I am making now. Thank god I'm not materialistic, because I'm actually managing to save money on my $100 a week I make now. lol, that's so sad. Live at home and save your money!

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 20, 2014 -> 03:07 PM) How on earth can play calling lead to a turnover? It's Trestman's fault when Cutler throws it into triple coverage? The HC/OC calls a run play or a pass play. It's up to the QB to pass the ball, throw it away, take the sack, etc. Yes, you can call stupid plays that are riskier than others, but ultimately your franchise, 54 million dollar QB should be making the right decision even with a difficult play call. A bad play call or a play call that is ineffective puts the offense, or in particular, certain players, in a bad position. Certainly Trestman doesn't throw an interception or fumble, but his sophistication as a playcaller certainly has an impact on the success of an offense or a given play. I'm certainly not praising his performance or anything, and he didn't even appear to be into the game yesterday, but you've got a clear agenda here and it's pretty obvious. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 20, 2014 -> 10:56 AM) Our QB has 10 turnovers in 7 games. How is that the HC's fault? He's done all he can to keep Cutler from making those mistakes. He's dumbed down the play calling to the point that it's been a lot of dink and dunk stuff to Forte. And even though that works, Cutler feels the need to make a big play and that's where mistakes happen. First of all, the HC calls the freaking plays. If you don't think that has an impact on turnovers, umm, well ok. Secondly, you have no clue if this is the case, you're just guessing based on Jay dumping it off to Matt a lot. You have no idea if that is Jay making that decision, or if Forte is the primary receiver on those routes. Obviously on the screens where Jay throws it at Forte's feet we know what was going on there, but otherwise, where Jay is going with the ball is dependent on the reads he makes. -

There are so many issues I don't even know where to point fingers. The whole organization outside of potentially the GM seems to be ineffective right now (and by default, that pretty much makes him ineffective). I can't say this is on the players, or the coaches, or the defense or the offense. They suck all-around one week, play well enough to make us change our minds the next, I just don't get it. To me, it ultimately comes down to a lack of leadership, if I had to guess, and that falls on Trestman, as he is the HC. -
So the Shriner's Hospital for Children Open is at my club this week. Nothing like watching Billy Horschel/Jimmy Walker/Brandt Snedeker whack it around the same holes you do...I was surprised at how similar they play the holes as I do, with the exception of the par 5's...that's where you really see the difference between their games....the ability to poke it out there 320 fairly easily and then to hit a long iron from 225-230 to about 12 feet. I've never made an eagle in my life and then seeing some fringe pro you've never heard of make 2 in a row is pretty nuts. Looking forward to the weekend.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 15, 2014 -> 08:25 AM) Yeah, but just because you clean the s*** up doesn't mean it won't leave a smell, and in a small room trying to go back to bed may suck. But anyway, I am hoping by 4 months she won't be doing this, but we are getting her at 8 weeks old, so I'm going to assume it will happen a few times in the first month or so. It shouldn't go in there too often...what it will do is WHINE AND CRY ALL NIGHT so you keep taking it out every 30 minutes when all it really wants is to sleep in your bed with you.
