Yoenis Cespedes traded to Detroit for Rick Porcello
iamshack replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) The thing to remember here is that if someone would have talked about us getting Boegarts and Middlebrooks in a deal as little as a year ago, it would have elicited a whole different reaction. Look no further than our own Erik Johnson and Matt Davidson. That's why I'd require at least one young player who's proven he can play here.... -

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 11:19 AM) The Red Sox probably have the bullets to get Chris Sale. Problem is, it would take every single one of them. Boegaerts Owens Bradley Cecchini Betts Raunado Vazquez Safe to say "it ain't happenin'". And honestly, I would feel nervous about accepting that package. If I am the White Sox I am absolutely not trading Chris Sale without at least one young player with a solid minor league pedigree who has come up and played very well for a sustained period of time. -

QUOTE (bruni @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 10:36 AM) Judging by the comments, this will not go over well but if someone is willing to trade me Cespedes and Bogaerts plus another throw in (Nava?, Middlebrooks?) for Sale, I make that trade all day long. I then immediately have SS solved for the next 6+ years and I work to sign Cespedes for a longer term deal. I also then flip Alexi to Seattle/LA/NYM or anyone else for 2 young controllable pitchers with upside and grab Headley to play 3B. Every time I watch Sale pitch with the torque he puts on that arm, all I hear is tick...tick...tick... The guy is bound to breakdown and this years stint on the DL for a month is where he is unfortunately likely headed in the years to come. Sell high and solve for 2-4 needs at once for the price of a 12 win pitcher who - while a stud ace when healthy - is a high risk player. Don't think so? Just 2 years ago, the W Sox were going to make him a reliever to save his arm, remember? And if you don't like what Boston has to offer, I'd put it out there are the GM meetings in December that all but Abreu are available so make an offer. Sale is never going to be more valuable than now and our team needs multiple solutions, not just one. Am I in the minority - absolutely. Do I hope Sale can stay and give the W Sox an injury free HOF career - you bet. But as a 22+ year season ticket holder growing tired of watching the team finish out of the playoffs, I'd rather use our most valuable, yet risky piece to gain depth and improve the teams over all talent base. PS - for the Cespedes haters, while yes he is overrated, last year only 9 players in the AL reached 100 RBI's in 2014 and Cespedes was one of them. That type of production is increasingly hard to come by so the comparisons with him and Viciedo need to really stop as it is not even close. Plus a middle of the line up with Abreu, Cespedes, La Roche, Headley, Garcia looks pretty good to me. Stick Eaton at leadoff and Bogaerts in the 2 hole and you are going to have a serious offense! OK - now let me have it! I'm on record for being open to moving Sale, but it's not going to be for a prospect that has looked as lost as XB did last year....Cespedes is a nice piece but he's not in the same stratosphere of value as Sale is. I'd need to see one potential star player that has proven he can play at this level, another 2-3 outstanding pedigree prospects, and maybe a veteran or two (such as Cespedes). We always have to listen...but as Hahn always says, it would have to be a Herschel Walker type trade. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 24, 2014 -> 09:07 AM) I'm going to be upset if the White Sox big plan is to acquire Matt Kemp. He is one of the more overrated players in the league. Given the contracts Hahn has given out to this point in his GM career, bringing in a guy with 5 years and $107 million left on his deal is not his MO, especially when said player is 30 years old. No matter the circumstances?

I dunno...some of these catches by the guys with huge hands and tacky gloves are awesome, but I am hesitant to say they are the best catches ever. It's almost like they are playing with a nerf ball or something. Not to say that they still aren't amazing catches, but given the ability one may have to catch a ball one-handed, I feel like the level of athleticism isn't necessarily as high as perhaps some others I've seen. -
Greg, how would you like the cop to be your dad, or brother, or son? What are these police officers supposed to do when this kid takes a toy gun, with the orange safety indicator removed and is waving it around? How does he know it's fake? What if the kid shoots someone? Or fires at the officer? I agree it would be nice if he could have fired at his leg or something, but the kid put himself in a position to be killed, and unfortunately he was. People and parents have to be much more careful than this.

QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 07:40 PM) Good stuff in this article about the type of teammate LaRoche is http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/natio...6985_story.html There was an article awhile back in the diamond club from the Washington post about a minor league player on the Nationals...anyways, I seem to remember LaRoche used to let the kid stay at his place when he was with the big league club.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 04:38 PM) Well a player one year older did just sign a 4 year deal, so it happens. Little bit of a different case, but fair enough.
-
Well he's 35...I would hope we wouldn't go too crazy
-
Hmmm...not my favorite signing ever, but shouldn't hurt us.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 03:31 PM) Then you would be left with the same issues the Angels and Dodgers are having with Hamilton, Pujols, Ethier, Kemp and Crawford. Not necessarily. First, he's not going to be 34 until 2025 Secondly, $30 million in 12 years may likely not be as penal then as it would seem today. Thirdly, he could opt out in 2020. But I smell what you are stepping in

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 02:55 PM) The value Quintana brings to the table is insane both intrinsically and extrinsically. Frankly, I was struggling whether or not I'd deal him for Giancarlo Stanton 2-3 months ago and then Stanton went and signed a $325 million deal. I'm definitely not trading Quintana for him now, not when he's going to cost $300 million more. Well, to be fair, for the same term, it would be more like $60 million more

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 10:33 AM) If you are a hiring manager, how do you notify interviewees that they didn't get the job: A. Call from yourself to inform them B. Email from yourself to inform them C. Call/email from HR person to inform them D. No contact at all Now, I'm not talking about the larger pool of people who applied, just the smaller pool of people who actually made it to an interview with the hiring manager. As a hiring manager, I always do (A), but as an interviewee, I can't remember the last time I received anything other than © or (D), with (D) being far more frequent. I did B....I think A just ends up being awkward for all parties involved, and I think a more truthful explanation can be made in writing. Just my two cents.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 07:23 PM) a player has 1 bad year and he's pretty much dead to this board. Bruce had a fairly serious knee injury and it affected him all year. You can't just pretend like the guy didn't have an OPS above .800 the 3 years before last. If he was 34 it would be a serious concern, but he's freaking 27 and people are saying things like "deteriorate and decline"? There is such a thing as a down year. And honestly, this is one of the few ways you're going to be able to trade for a player with this type of talent.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 07:01 PM) On the flip side if its a legit source maybe he can't say anything until the national media gets it first in order to protect a source or something along those lines. He's a legit source. Bruce had a bad year, but he's had 3 30/100 seasons prior to that. Let's not act like he's terrible. I wouldn't trade Q for Bruce, but for Bruce and the right arm, absolutely.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 09:47 AM) So how'd this go Shack? I'm still sticking to a modified version of it and I'm liking the results overall. Hah, not well. I learned my body does not function well without carbs. I had a few things on my calendar that were going to interfere with this nonsense (guy's night out on the strip, PGA tourney), so we just gave up after a week. We try and eat this way a few nights a week, and most of the weekdays, we keep it pretty healthy, but my wife's cooking/baking skills are too good to not cheat a bit. Overall, we do pretty well though.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 07:23 PM) The f*** knows. I'm done thinking about it. Bunch of mind f***ers. I officially declined. Good for you. I think you chose wisely.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 04:54 PM) These investors blow that kind of cash in a weekend. It's nothing to them. So why all the stress? Why were they going to close this thing down?

QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 01:33 PM) I can't read the last two words of that sentence without an irish accent. She's been plucked more times than the rose of tralee. Biggest whore on 5th Avenue.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 01:13 PM) What did the tweet say? Did we sign him? No, just says we have interest.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 06:32 AM) I'm having it put into a contract. I'm not agreeing to anything (nor pulling the plug on the new opp) without a guaranteed contract. I want to puke. I really really really suggest you consult with an attorney. Secondly, you mentioned your primary reason for wanting out was because of the stress involved in working for these folks. Over the past several months, we've seen them promote you like 3 times, have you create a website for spinoff business, threaten to pull the funding for it after a few months, and now make these promises to you. These guys are all over the place. I wouldn't trust them. Don't take a marginal pay increase just to have to deal with the stress of working for these folks. You found a more stable company, you've got a good offer, they've been willing to bring some of your team over. You've got a kid on the way. It's going to be much less stressful working for an established outfit than working for a fly by the seat of their pants outfit. There is basically only one way that you should go back to them, and that is if you basically strike the deal of your career. I'd tell them you're sick of their games, ask for a significant raise (at least 50% more than whatever their current offer is), and some reasonably large stake in this spinoff. If you're going to deal with the stress of this situation, you may as well try and hit an absolute home run in doing so and make it worth your while.

QUOTE (peppers312 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 01:08 PM) yeah if Alexei is going anywhere, Rick better make sure that team is taking Danks and his contract too. similar to how the Cabrera + Dontrelle Willis deal years ago to DET. we have to unload Danks' contract. Except Alexei is nowhere near the asset Cabrera was. Honestly, given the payroll we have and the window we are looking at, I'd much rather just pay Danks his money if it means we can extract much more value in trades of our own assets.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 12:40 PM) What was creative about the non-prospects the Sox got for Crain? why would a deal for Alexei require anything creative? Avoid their 3rd tier and below prospects and their rapidly declining veterans. It was creative because Crain was injured at the time and the return centered around Crain's future performance for the Rays. I think creativity in regards to a trade with the Dodgers could be required if you begin talking about value being impacted by the dollars moving between the teams.

People need to stop talking in absolutes in regards to Jay and whether the guy can win. The Bears played in a Conference Championship game a few years back, which, last time I checked, is considered "winning." If you are defining "winning" as winning the Super Bowl, there is nothing you can say to me to convince me that the Bears had no chance of winning that game and ultimately making the Super Bowl. The Bears have also been on the cusp of making the playoffs in other seasons with Cutler. Is Cutler the best quarterback in the NFL? No. Is he in the top 10? Probably not. However, can a team "win" with Jay Cutler? Absolutely, and to say otherwise is simply contradictory to recent history. -

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 16, 2014 -> 06:48 PM) So where is Rodgers going to rank on the all time QB list when he's done? He's the best I've ever seen, better than Peyton and Brady... That depends on how you value longevity. If Rodgers was to get hurt next week and never play again, how would you rank him? I need to see several more years before I'm going to compare his career to those of Manning and Brady.
