QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 07:15 AM) They don't dial it bacl from criticism. They dial it back when he throw stupid interception, which coincides with the criticism. Well, look at what happened this year...Jay had a few good games to start the year, everything is ok. We win in SF and then NY. Then he struggles and plays an especially bad half against Green Bay. The criticism starts. Jay begins pouting. Coaching staff worries he will quit on the team if criticism continues. They go into Carolina and keep things conservative in order to protect Cutler from interceptions leading to more criticism. We lose again. This is basically what I see happening. It's why we started dumping everything down into the flats instead of throwing the ball down field. -

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 07:04 AM) I get the Bears defense being bad, there isn't much talent on that side of the ball. I just don't understand how that offense isn't good, not saying they should be great. I think Bear fans over hyped them last year, but they should be ranked higher than 19th in the league in points per game. Should be closer to top 10. I think part of it is linked to Jay's reputation in the City and his mental state. It seems like whenever Jay falls under some criticism, they dial the offense back to the short passes to protect his psyche. Otherwise, he tends to start just winging the ball all over the place, interceptions ensue, and it just sort of snowballs. That is really my only explanation, other than Trestman just not having a clue how to make adjustments. -
I would rather the Sox trade for Brandon Moss than the Indians

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 05:13 PM) There, I said it. He's a perfect fit for our LF vacancy, and we still need a left handed bat, and he's still got two-years of control pre-free agency. I feel like we could get him without touching the top tier of our prospects. I would give Montas for him if I had to, though I'd try to aim lower. Anyone think there's any chance we're the #mysteryteam? http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playe...;position=1B/OF Additionally, Bradon Moss would likely come cheaper than all the Indians. -

Or maybe this is Beane valuing Lawrie highly and Toronto being very hesitant to move him because they do as well. Keep in mind this isn't an auction process, it takes two to tango. When you get into talk about a team knowing something about it's own players that other teams don't, I just don't buy into that line of thinking. If the rest of the league doesn't know it, then the market for said player should be unaffected by this knowledge and be representative of the League's knowledge of the player. Only if the danger of the knowledge coming out is imminent should that knowledge affect the market value of the player. -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 09:51 PM) But all of that is baked right into wRC+, so you can see that he is still really good after you account for the Coors effect. Since he broke out in 2009 (excepting his injury-driven lemon last year), his has fluctuated between 114 - 147. He's a star level bat even with the park and league adjustment. The question is, of course, is his health. Will he ever be healthy again? The high AAV on a short term deal is not at all outrageous if you think you're getting even a 125 wRC+ OF that plays good defense. Let me ask something else though...if Coors is really that different than other ballparks, and Rockies' players play 81 games a year there, isn't it conceivable that their production could actually suffer more on the road than other players, since there is that big disparity between Coors and all other stadiums? If there is more of a variance to overcome, it seems as though that would only feed into the disparity between Coors and away from Coors. Did Matt Holiday have extreme splits when he played for the Rockies, and has that continued since he's been in St Louis?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 01:20 PM) 3100 career plate appearances .329/.387/.601 vs, .258/.314/.437 which includes around 400 appearances as an A where his splits were close to the same home and road. .339/.400/.625 at Coors Field in his career. I think a lot of has to do with the thin air, and big field. And given the hitting environment in Chicago, and the big fields in Detroit, Minnesota and KC, you don't think he would hit well here?

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 12:39 PM) Cargo 2012 Home- .368/.437/.609 Away- .234-.301/.405 Cargo 2011 Home- .331/.402/.597 Away- .252/.317/.440 Saying "Coors or not" doesn't work...not even close. There are plenty of players who have divergent home and away splits that do not play in Coors field. It isn't entirely a product of the thin air. It also has to do with comfort level, experience, etc.
-
QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 12:20 PM) .258/.314/.437 That's why it should be a hell no to Cargo. We'd be trading and paying a big price for a guy who can't hit away from Coors. And then you add in the injuries as well...no thanks, just not worth it. Coors or not, Cargo has put up some monster seasons that Bruce has yet to come anywhere close to.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 05:38 AM) Cutler had no opportunity to play action, which is actually when he performs better. Forte actually called that out too, he said the D line was pinning their ears back and coming full tilt because they knew that no run was coming. 8 runs. 7 called. All game. Seriously, that should get Trestman fired right there. Not only is that stupid from a score standpoint, but that is also how you get your QB killed. I don't even get that upset about the lack of runs so much as the lack of creating plays which are designed to beat the pass rush. Roll Jay out, work quick slants and outs, etc. I watch all these other teams play and see a variety of schemes employed to beat a good run defense that also rushes the passer well. But we just seem to run the same old s***, game after game after game. -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 05:34 AM) From what i have read, Beane wants hitters. I dont really think he is sweating over defensive liabilities right now, especially since he just signed Billy Butler to DH and pretend to play first is it idiotic if Shark extends immediately? Depends at what price. Assuming the Sox would not extend him to something unreasonable, I still wouldn't like it, but I don't know if it could be called idiotic. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 05:50 PM) I don't know how we all know Alexei won't be better. 2 years ago he dropped to a 1.9 WAR and it was said he is on the downslope and only going to get worse. The next year he puts up a 3.1 WAR, and last season a 3.3 , when again, he is supposedly just going to get worse. Steamer projects a 2.3 next season, which supposedly is good for $10 million. If they do trade him, if it is for a Davidson like prospect that doesn't pan out, it will be a godawful trade, even if people post the "you make that trade 10 times out of 10". BS. Trade him a year early rather than a year late. -

The NFL is all but impossible to bet except for the handful of powerhouse teams with elite qb's. I've done ok in my office pool where we pick every game against the spread (55% or so), but my wagering has been brutal this year. It's a total crapshoot week in and week out. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 04:42 PM) On a broadcast at the beginning of September, they showed a graphic which gave SS points, x amount for making a routine play, another amount for making plays considered out of regular range, and Alexei had basically clinched the win with a month to play. I think the story of his demise is being exaggerated just as they have been the past few years. If they do trade him and don't sign a replacement, I think many will find out he was a bit better than they think. A poor defensive team taking a step back defensively at SS is going to make all those who think the Sox don't have a chance next year correct. Only 8 SS had a higher WAR in 2014, 3 of those only .1 higher, so for what he gets paid, and considering he was only going to get worse 2 years ago, I wouldn't get rid of him unless you are very sure you have a legitimate replacement. I just think the reward is potentially greater than the slight risk that we are actually going going to be truly competitive in August/September. Now if he don't get any decent offers, I'm not in favor of trading him for the sake of making a trade. But if we get a chance to acquire a piece for the next several years, you've got to take it. -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) Alexei is good, but the Silver Slugger was propped up by a super strong first half that turned into a pretty ugly second half that feels closer to his true talent based on his career arc. I mean, he hasn't hit as well as he did during the first half of 2015 since the year he broke into the league. And the gold glove means nothing -- he's been robbed of it in the past, but both the eyeballs and the sabermetrics agree that he's lost a step on the field over the past couple years, and there's no reason to believe that won't continue as he ages. I think Alexei is a good player who is pretty close to turning into an average player. We have a bunch of holes to fill, and he's our best chance at spreading our talent around the diamond and turning it into some more future control. I think our in house options for a replacement need a shot to stick, and I think that even if they all fail to hit, we have some good options defensively that will not be so bad as a fallback option. I'd like to see us try to move him. Yeah, they need to move him while he still has value. You just know that come July his value will have taken a huge hit. It's really the most obvious trade Hahn needs to make this offseason. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 02:37 PM) I just assumed the word recent was included in such a way to remove that one because it's the obvious super bowl era champ for lopsided trades. I guess the phrase "recent NFL history" is a bit ambiguous. -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 02:30 PM) I think it is a contender, but you have to put that up against Ricky Williams. The Colts got a haul for Marshall Faulk too, although both teams were happy with their return. Herschel Walker? -

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 07:17 AM) As I have stated; if that's the price, then I am not in favor of the trade. However, we don't know the price. I'm making a conceptual argument, which is that getting a given player, signed to a long term contract, is not necessarily desirable. It depends on the years, and the annual salary, as well as the players worth. In this case, if Samardjiza had already been extended, and were to get 5 years and $100 million, would that make him more, or less, desirable? The answer for me is; less desirable, because I would not want a 30 year old, #2, or #3 starter, signed to a 5 year contract, at $20 million per year. I would give up less to get that contract, than I would to acquire him for one year, at the very reasonable rate of $8 or $9 Million, because I view the former as undesirable, and the latter as desirable. The risk of injury has to be a significant consideration. If it were my team and my money, I would be just as apprehensive about such contracts as Mr. Reinsdorf. Oh, I agree with your sentiments about the extension. I was trying to add clarity to the situation.
