  1. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 08:05 AM) I think we're long past the day of there being a finite number of copies of anything. Yeah, I knew that was coming...you get the gist...paying for the file or whatever to be destroyed.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 9, 2014 -> 06:53 AM) Forgetting level of punishment for a moment... how pathetic is it that it took TMZ to dig up this video, when the police and the NFL either couldn't (incompetent) or chose not to watch it (frightening). Honestly, I am more surprised the NFL didn't buy up every copy of the film and destroy it...or maybe they thought they had...
  3. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 10:44 PM) Overreaction? Hardly. Not quite sure how you're still defending this whole thing. He's spot on here, and has been for months on this. Now everyone else is finally catching up. The NFL f***ed up the entire investigation. They interviewed her with Ray in the room. You absolutely positively cannot interview a person that's been abused with said abuser IN THE ROOM. It's absolutely incredible. So, what he's saying is correct, marriage or no marriage. This is not a case of a married couple headed for divorce at the time of the interview/hearing...this is not the case of a couple on the outs...this is a couple that was just married...if there is still not enough trust between the two of them for her to accurately recount the events, without fear of retribution, than her testimony is not credible in the first place.
  4. QUOTE (hi8is @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 10:48 PM) Whining sounds a hell of a lot different than, "damn it." However, if you want to play the name game... I can go down that road. There's a lot of anger boiling in me at the moment, so... Let me remain calm, request you shut your almighty mouth, and just leave it at that. Ummm, wow....
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 07:52 PM) He obviously has the tools and youth is on his side, but so far he seems like a 5 tool player that isn't close to utilizing any of those tools. At the plate, he's losing his balance on off speed pitches. On fastballs inside, he isn't close to getting his hands in. He did the same last year, and it's why he's a ground out machine to the left side. Yeah, he's just a cocktease
  6. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 07:48 PM) "When you wake up tomorrow, go to our website, and you will see what the NFL didn’t do," Levin said."I believe they turned a blind eye to it. The NFL knew this surveillance video existed, they knew the casino has surveillance video, and we will explain (on Tuesday) why we know they knew that — but they did. They didn’t do anything to look at this video.” -tmz Goodell will resign if true. Doubtful. That's not really anything we don't already know, is it?
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 07:47 PM) Avi has a lot of bad tendencies at the plate. I said this last week, but I wouldn't be upset if they use him as a major piece in a trade. Glad you're coming around, but it seems like another project they'll be too stubborn to cut their losses on.
  8. QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 05:14 PM) Tim's Vermeer is a great documentary. Huh?
  9. QUOTE (MAX @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 03:56 PM) Wow, that's kind of horrible. At first I thought it was funny. But then I thought, that really trivializes all fans interest and desire to win for their team. I mean, we shouldnt care at all that he sucks, because we aren't on the team. So fandom of a team is equated with fantasy teams? Ugh. I'm not even a hater and I don't like this comment at all. For real? C'mon man, lighten up.
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 04:46 PM) I agree with this, although I don't think the indefinite NFL suspension is relevant. TMZ gave Rice a lifetime suspension releasing this video. No NFL team will ever touch him IMO. We'll see...apparently the Bucs have been considering signing Richie Incognito.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 04:40 PM) Not to mention there are two massive distinctions that are being ignored to make light of this situation. The finance can do whatever the heck that she wants. If she wants to be with Rice, there is nothing that can stop her from doing so, well unless Rice actually succeeds in killing her one day, but that is a different story. The other thing is how the NFL as an employer handles the situation. One does not effect the other. How the NFL views the behavior of its employee, doesn't equate to how Rice's finance views him. The NFL is fully within its right to terminate its employees employment situation because of how its employee acted, whether the victim likes it or not. You want to really protect a victim? Do everything you can to make an abuser think twice about beating on his significant other. If even one abuser stops and thinks that he could lose his job and millions of dollars if he throws a punch, this media storm has been a success. Hell even if one average Joe has the same second thoughts, this has been a success. I agree, but I have a feeling some gold-digging women are going to attempt to extort some of these young idiots and make it even more difficult for the NFL to figure out what the hell is going on. That's why it's not ideal for the NFL, or any employer, for that matter, to get involved in these matters.
  12. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 04:02 PM) I would agree she probably has some other things going on if she is still with him, but isn't that also true with Rice's now wife? I don't know if you are married or anyone else here, but if we all show this video to our wives and ask them if we did this to them, would they marry us a month or so later, I guessing 0% say yes. If Rice would have knocked me out in the elevator, he is probably doing time, and missing a lot of football and also paying me a lot of money.Maybe the punishment seems like they are trying to correct a wrong and went overboard, and it probably is. But he still is getting what he deserves. I don't disagree in the slightest. But she is still an adult and chose to marry him. I don't think we or the great Keith Olbermann should question every decision she makes within sight of Ray Rice as to whether it was under duress or threat.
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 03:18 PM) I sure hope you don't ever have a friend or a sister or daughter who is in an abusive relationship and refuses to get out. A close friend of mine has a daughter in one he beat the crap out of her and threw her out in below zero temps last winter. She had frostbite and a couple of fractures and she is back with him. At his trial she said she didn't remember him ever hitting her. My friend has one option it seems and that is one that would spend the rest of his life locked up. It isn't as simple as you make it. No one is saying it is simple. And no offense, but your friend's daughter has some other things going on besides just an evil boyfriend if she continues to date him. We can't question every decision a woman makes or action she takes because she was hit by the man she was with. I know I'll get some grief for this, but I feel it needs to be said: Some men and women that think they love eachother (and who am I to say if they truly do or not) treat each other very strangely. They fight, they say terrible things to one another, they physically abuse one another. Human behavior is sometimes very strange. Rightfully so, people become outraged when men are filling the role of abuser. However, there is much less outrage when women are the abusers. Disproportionately so. And does anyone even care when gay couples fight? When society as a whole starts trying to get in the middle of some of these strange relationships, it seems to backfire. Oftentimes, it doesn't seem to be for the benefit of anyone actually involved. I'm all for protecting women in danger, and I am all for protecting men in danger. But sometimes, these people don't want protection, they don't want outside involvement, and if that is truly the case, than so be it. Continue at your own peril, for all I care.
  14. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 03:00 PM) who needs that much tivo For a moment, I was really confused because I thought you were responding to yourself...
  15. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) Look Shack, when youre dealing with women, you cant let them make decisions. They arent capable of understanding the consequences of their actions, so its up to men to tell them whats right and wrong. Clearly fans and the NFL understand the relationship of Rice and Palmer better than they do, so it makes perfect sense that the NFL and fans have to step in. Especially because in the last months Rice and Palmer have had a lot of profile issues. Obviously... all the men "riding in on their white horses" to save this woman are actually doing her more of a disservice by assuming she is not capable of making any of her own decisions.
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 03:03 PM) It is not uncommon for women in abusive relationships to continue those relationships. Understood. So I suppose we shouldn't let them get married either, because he may have been forcing her against her will.
  17. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 02:41 PM) Yeah it's not the Ravens, it's the NFL preventing him from getting another job (if there is one) because of the suspension. Also, Jesus: http://deadspin.com/keith-olbermann-on-rog...dium=socialflow Again with the overreaction. This is damn near grounds for a defamation claim if it's not true. He is such a blowhard I keep hearing people making this point...do people just disregard the fact that she MARRIED the guy after this incident? Did he force her to do THAT too, under threats of another beating? Come on...
  18. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 02:38 PM) Many states are at will employment which means you can be fired for no reason or any reason provided its not an illegal reason. NFL players have a contract so their ability to be terminated is based on whatever agreement that they signed. I'm pretty sure their contracts only guarantee them some financial payout, but certainly not a roster spot.
  19. QUOTE (ptatc @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 02:36 PM) Does the employer have the right to fire you without justification? I'm truly asking as I don't know. Right now Rice can say he had no legal action taken against him. Why should the business take action when the courts didn't Again don't take this as I agree. I think he should have been prosecuted. But since he wasn't, I don't know the justification. In most states, yes. They can't discriminate against you, but they can fire you absent any particular cause in most states.
  20. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 02:30 PM) What's the mitigating factor? The video? That would technically be an aggravating factor, and I think one could argue that the sheer force with which he struck her, combined with the fact that he then dragged her out of the elevator, obviously could justify suspending him indefinitely. He literally could have killed her.
  21. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 02:27 PM) I thought it was 6 games for a first offender. I guess technically "indefinite" could be 6, but they better decide that quickly. I think they could apply mitigating or aggravating factors to shorten or lengthen the suspension, however.
  22. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 02:19 PM) Misguided fairness? What the hell is the point of a protocol if you're just going to ignore it? They handed down the punishment and then because a video leaked they scrapped that in favor of something. That's bulls***, even if Rice deserves it. Technically, they aren't outside of the protocol, are they? Didn't the policy give them the ability to suspend someone for longer depending on some other factors? Besides, this occurred prior to the protocol...in fact, it was obviously the reason the protocol was created in the first place.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 02:08 PM) At some point, to set up harsher penalties someone has to be the first one to get them, so all of the historical BS of how they looked the other direction strawman will be there. If it wasn't Ray Rice, it was the next guy, or the guy after him. f*** the NFL for looking the other way for this for so long, and all of the other felony's they pretend don't happen. Hopefully some day they join the rest of the world in not wanting to associate with the people who beat their spouses, or any of the other felony's. Honestly, I think it was somewhat unfair to Ray Rice, but he probably doesn't deserve a whole lot of fairness right now. You would have liked to see the next idiot be the one to get the penalty, instead of this "retroactive public justice," but I don't know what else the NFL could have really done (at this point). Interestingly enough, I am listening to PGA Tour radio of all things, and one of the hosts just made the same point Badger has been making about his wife being victimized twice because of her husband losing his job.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 01:33 PM) Sorry, but if you watched that video and the thing you came away with was "man, that girl was annoying", you are viewing it in a cause and effect lens. If no punching happened, nobody would have had any strong opinions on how that person in the silent video behaved. But in addition, and this is me judging, if you watched that video and one of your thoughts was "man, that girl was annoying", I don't' even know how to finish that. It's just absurd that could be a takeaway. It's a perfectly legitimate observation. You can judge all you want. We all know you like to do that, because you are also apparently omniscient.
  25. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 8, 2014 -> 01:41 PM) I wondered out loud here back when the new punishments were first announced if it'd have the effect of making some DV victims even more hesitant to come forward. "Yeah, my husband beat me up again, but if I report this one, he's going to lose his $50M contract" Of course that works both ways, in terms of potential extortion...
