  1. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 2, 2014 -> 08:57 AM) There are a lot of players that played nowhere near as well as Sam against 2s and 3s that are on a team (see Cornelius Washington). But look at Austen Lane, who played pretty well, tough at that level. Still think the 'boys should pick him up This would have been too easy...and in bad taste...but funny
  2. Anyone play any golf over the holiday weekend? I had interesting rounds of 85/92/79 Oh the joys of golf...
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 2, 2014 -> 06:56 AM) I'd say Jose is at his absolute peak. I won't argue with that. I just don't subscribe to the theory that you HAVE to maximize asset value, and trade him. As I said, if you can get a superstar hitter, AND you are willing to spend on another top flight RHSP, then you do the deal. I'd have to have more than one prospect for him, I don't care who it is, and it would have to be at least two guys that filled a need and I really, really felt strongly about. I think you always have to be willing to move pretty much anyone, but as someone else alluded to, you have to believe the package you receive in return will exceed what you are giving up, given Q's contract and consistency of high-level performance. To me, that's two bats, not one, unless the one is truly a susperstar bat or something (which isn't going to happen).
  4. QUOTE (aboz56 @ Aug 31, 2014 -> 06:49 PM) This guy basically stole $56 million from the White Sox (and yes, I realize it was an AWFUL signing by KW). Whether he was a nice guy or a good teammate is irrelevant to me. He was sold to the fanbase as a major addition and was an epic fail. Good riddance. You expect him to give it back?
  5. Going to have to be 6 games and then another 3-4 as a result of the woman being pregnant...
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 31, 2014 -> 08:44 AM) Former 2012 2nd round pick. Some nice stats in relief this year. Way more than I thought they would get for Dunn. Good friend of mine is an A's fan...said a lot of A's folks were pretty high on Sanburn.
  7. Would have preferred it to be Viciedo
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 29, 2014 -> 01:01 PM) I dont like GOING to them. If its coat/snowpants weather, I wont attend a game. That's what whiskey is for.
  9. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 06:18 PM) I was actually a little surprised he wasn't hitting a little better average and OBP wise, when he was at .260/.305ish, given his Cuban stats as compared to Puig and Cespedes. That's come around now. Do you think he's doing it at the expense at home runs/slugging %?
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 05:56 PM) So if there is 30 teams and he is about 90th, that is a pretty solid #3 or 4 starter, which is what they need him to be. You should try to watch a game and just enjoy it instead of having to go reference Fangraphs to see if they can explain to you what you watched. You guys need to lay off this bulls***.
  11. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 05:57 PM) Considering nobody's reading this thread anyway, a random thought: how dumb was it for the Tigers to give Cabrera a new contract last offseason, considering his contract expired after 2015? His value was hardly going to rise. The only thing it could really do is decline, and it has quite a bit. wRC+ of 138 this year compared to 191 last year. His value would actually be hurt worse but he's benefited by moving from being a liability at 3B to slightly plus at 1B. A decent amount of it is driven by a probably unlucky HR/FB% but still, that contract is gonna start hurting big, and soon. It's all the more bizarre when they moved Fister partly to clear money. They'll just trade him to Texas for someone much younger.
  12. The question itself is very difficult to answer...future core? First of all, how far into the future? Secondly, assuming the answer is 2-5 years from now, you'd have to take the Cubs. The players they have in their minor league system are by far more universally acclaimed than the White Sox. However, this is akin to counting chickens before they hatch or on one's crop prior to the harvest. A lot of things can happen to effect potential outcomes. As of today, the White Sox have the better core. However, that wasn't the question.
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 08:53 AM) If Delmon Young was a different kind of player, JR could learn to forgive, but he's a RH DH who generally kills the White Sox and is a journeyman against everyone else. IMO, the team showed their cards going after Tanaka. They won't spend to spend, but will if their specific targets are available. They have always seemed to stretch their limits in the past. When they had no money, the found some to add Peavy and Rios. They found some to trade for EJax. They found $4 million laying around for a month of Manny. After they signed Dunn, everyone assumed AJ and Paulie were gone. They were brought back. When JR was asked where he had the money, because the company line had always been they break even every year, he said "you save a little here, save a little there". To say anyone here really has any idea what the payroll limit is would be crazy, but we do know it is usually higher than the White Sox initially claim. They have been a very profitable team except for 2013 the past 25 years. And teams that lose 99 games shouldn't be profitable. Under the current revenue structure, this isn't true, however.
  14. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 11:54 AM) Re: Vegas I will need to do some digging, but I'm pretty sure I've seen labor reports that indicate that Vegas has a much higher percentage of residents who work 2nd shift compared to other major cities. Regardless of whether you are relying on tourists or locals to fill the stadiums and watch games on TV, you have an awful lot of them who are already busy during the hours that sporting events are typically played. It's almost like you have to treat Vegas as a metro area that is 20-30% smaller than it really is because of the unavailability of the population during the evening hours. Yeah, for sure...the hospitality industry and the convention industries being the two largest industries by far, I'm sure that is true.
  15. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 10:31 AM) You also have to think about TV revenue. It's one thing for locals to be excited to finally have a pro team and attend a hockey game. It's another for them to watch a game on TV at 4:00 local time on a weekday vs the Hurricanes or Panthers. Why would it be on at 4 pm? Edit: Oh, you mean the road games...yes, well, I'm sure the west coast has dealt with that already...
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 10:15 AM) Some would. But that isn't going to be enough to sustain a team. Heck places like Phoenix and Florida have millions of northerner transplants living there year round, and still can't fill a hockey arena.` That's why I specifically said it wouldn't. I just said it would help. Vegas has a few million residents, and no other professional sports teams. I don't know that it would work out in the end either, but I don't think Phoenix and Miami are good examples because these are places with many other sports teams. Honestly, the best idea I've heard in terms of getting professional sports here is the MNF idea.
  17. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 10:03 AM) When do they start those, only late December? Earlier? They have a few...right now you should be seeing some year-end model sales where you can get '14's for pretty cheap.
  18. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) Honestly, if Vegas is going to rely on Tourists to fill out the stadium rather than a stable season ticket base, than it is a really bad choice. I hear jacksonville is an up and coming spot! I didn't say they would rely on tourists.
  19. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) No, I said personally I wouldnt want to, which is 100% accurate. I am lucky I know what time of the day it is when I am there. And I LOVE watching games in the sportsbooks or something like Emeril Stadium. I understand what you are saying about yourself. I disagree that is a representation of most Hawks fans or NHL fans.
  20. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 09:45 AM) Yes but can I gamble and play blackjack during the game? I wouldn't be shocked if you could, to be honest. You can play blackjack in the damn pools now. But seriously, you're talking about a two-hour window here...there are plenty of folks who carve out 2 hours to do things besides gamble...restaurants/shows/pool/shopping...you're taking this a bit to the extreme.
  21. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 09:38 AM) Personally no, unless it was a playoff game or something. If I am going to Vegas im doing Vegas-type s***. Maybe not everyone is a big drinker and gambler. The stadium would be located downtown...right next to all the "vegas type s***." I think you're nuts.
  22. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 09:31 AM) You live there, the novelty has worn off. If I go there I am experiencing what is unique to the city, not what I can see anywhere else. s***, sitting in a sports book in the casino watching the game sounds better to me. No, I am saying people will use their team playing there as an excuse to go there, not them randomly being here when their team is here. When my friends and I go see the Sox or Bears on the road, we choose the coolest cities/stadiums. We then go see the game(s) and then spend the remainder of our time exploring the city. You honestly don't think Hawks fans would plan trips to Vegas to see the Hawks play here? I just don't buy that whatsoever.
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 09:28 AM) Not really. I think there are many other things I would want to do in Vegas instead of watching a sporting event. Well, we'll agree to disagree.
  24. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 09:22 AM) I disagree with this. And I also dont think locals are dying for hockey. You don't think opposing team's fans are going to choose Vegas as a road trip opportunity to see their team? I'm not saying this would overcome a low local fanbase, but I certainly think it would help. As for locals, they are fired up about a potential MLS team, let alone a "Big 4" professional team. What are you basing this on?
  25. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 09:00 AM) IMO not a great fanbase and the ice would suck I thought what caused the ice to suck was humidity? I think the fanbase would be strong...people here are dying to get a real professional team...plus, you'd have a lot of opposing team's fans in attendance.
