  1. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 11:55 AM) I understand that, but Steve is just reminded of 90-91, he never said it was an exact scenario. And lets be honest, outside of Lebron, you look at the Heat and see either old, or replaceable players. Wade is no spring chicken, and Bosh hasnt been the same since he decided to be third wheel. Lebron most likely will put the team on his back like he always does, i dont doubt that. Hah, it's actually Michael Wilbon who is reminded of 90-91. Steve was just a fan of the article
  2. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 11:40 AM) lol, the grand revisionist I really do think he has a point...I see this much more like 89-90...we had lost twice to the Pistons already and really thought this was the time we would get them. Isiah was 28, Dumars 26, Rodman 28, but most of the others were on the wrong side of 30. We lost the series 4-3 because no one could win a road game. I remember slamming my wrist against the ground and almost breaking it out of frustration, this, at the age of 13. We got so close but just were not there yet. Needed one more year.
  3. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 11:25 AM) It's like the 1990-91 season, a lot like it actually, when Michael Jordan's Bulls were trying to catch the two-time NBA Champion Bad Boy Detroit Pistons, the team that had thrice beaten the Bulls in the playoffs on the way to those titles. And those Bulls, with Jordan leading the way, had to go through the Pistons the same way these Bulls, with Rose leading the way, have to go through Miami. Slaying the dragon that torments you is usually the only way to glory in the NBA and it is no different for these Bulls. Taking down a sitting champion requires, yes, a wonderful team. But of even greater importance it demands a supremely skilled, relentlessly driven -- if not outright ruthless -- player in his physical prime who (usually) has suffered enough indignity in his basketball life to play with utter defiance from November through June, to attack the season as if it's a prize fight. And what we're looking to see, beginning Tuesday night in Miami, is whether Rose, his body up to the task once again, is that player. All we can see thus far, through 18 months of coming back from the knee injury and eight undefeated preseason games, is that Rose -- at 25 years old -- is so very different than he was at 23. You can see it and hear it in a 20-minute on-the-record conversation Sunday at the Berto Center. When I asked Rose to tell me once and for all if he made the right decision to sit out the entire 2012-13 season, if he made the right call to turn a deaf ear to the critics who mocked him last spring because he didn't change course and ride to the rescue during the playoffs, Rose answered with absolute certainty that it's "the smartest decision I ever made." Of all the things we talked about, the most impressive thing Rose said, in my opinion, was that he played his first four NBA seasons primarily off talent. He didn't stretch, didn't watch his diet, didn't obsess over his conditioning. But he does now … all of the above … fanatically. More from this fantastic piece here. I actually view this more closely to the '89-'90 season.
  4. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 11:09 AM) Just don't get caught, it's a suspendable offense and is considered hacking. And cool if you were like...13
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 10:44 AM) Matt Spiegel ‏@MattSpiegel670 3m When asked if Sox roster could handle three 1B/DH types, Hahn told us not to project based on today. Dunn gone somehow? Or Konerko retiring? No, just the easiest way to avoid answering the question.
  6. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 10:21 AM) You guys are both right and I feel that Miami has heard that as well and this is going to somehow end up working against the Bulls. I tend to over think things. No, you're right...they are aware of this. When they lost to Dallas a few years ago, they opened up against the Mavs and their ring ceremony and waxed them. But it's not as easy as just "knowing it." The ring ceremony elicits certain emotions that probably aren't particularly conducive to playing a team which really wants to kick your ass. I guess we'll find out.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 10:10 AM) It just seems like trophy ceremonies always work against the defending champs. This was my thinking...that, and this being such an important game for the Bulls...I think we're going to be more up for this one than Miami.
  8. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 09:53 AM) I've always been the first person to point out that fact. But unless they trust Doubront to go 5+ innings, Peavy is gonna have to start game 6 or game 7. I'd rather give him game 7 on regular rest with your ace available out of the bullpen against a s***tier mound opponent, IF you don't win game 6. I think they'll go Lackey in game 6. If they lose and go to a game 7, they will start Peavy, but with an extremely short leash. They will then be able to bring in Buchholz, Doubront and even Lester if need be.
  9. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 09:47 AM) Guys. Let's focus on and live in the now. Bulls @ Heat tonight. #TheReturn will be official. Will the Champs be distracted by their rings? Will D-Rose get nasty? Who ya got? I have Bulls by 5 with Derrick having a pretty rough night from the floor but making up for it by getting to the line and hitting a couple threes. I see Taj as having a nice game, too. I bet the Bulls on the moneyline and under 188.5
  10. I can't understand a word he is saying!!! I think he said he is going to use the blood of Quintana's penis...
  11. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 28, 2013 -> 04:27 PM) That would be like choosing a Toyota over a Camaro. You missed the joke
  12. I don't know why you don't just get an iPhone...jeesh
  13. I think once some of you guys sort of find your way in your chosen professions and settle into your adult lives a little you won't miss college quite as much...
  14. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 28, 2013 -> 12:58 PM) Was he talking about Jake Peavy? No, Lance Lynn.
  15. Cowherd advanced some silly theory this morning about allowing your starters more rope and even to actually let them lose games rather than pulling them early because they are usually alpha males and damaging their egos upsets the clubhouse and their own confidence. It was about the dumbest thing I have ever heard him say (and that is saying something).
  16. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 28, 2013 -> 12:10 PM) No. I don't think Alabama or the SEC has the pull this year. There is no LSU of past, and say the world becomes perfect and Mizzou wins out and beats Alabama, no way they leap 2 undefeateds in major conferences. Add in the fact that it's probably everyones dream to see FSU v. Oregon. Guilty as charged.
  17. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 28, 2013 -> 11:50 AM) Did you not notice I made it green? In all seriousness though, what if a free agent of Abreu's caliber said he'd only sign if he got #6. What then? Then you realize he takes himself way too seriously and move on.
  18. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 28, 2013 -> 10:55 AM) One is a social no-no, one is a rule infraction in a game (a rule which is trying to curb plays that were celebrated not long ago). He's absolutely dirty, I don't like the guy, and he should have been suspended for longer than a game. But if you're asking, like he does, what would you prefer - someone who hits guys in a dangerous/dirty fashion or someone who would beat a woman, i'm going with the dirty player. A lot of things that are completely wrong/immoral/illegal are celebrated. That doesn't really enter the equation for me in terms of my moral compass. Violance/immoral actions in the context of sports is very interesting, perhaps most interesting in American football. This guy is wearing the equivalent of a deadly weapon on his head, and is repeatedly launching it at very high speeds and incredible force at the heads of others in a defenseless position, which ultimately could render them dead, paralyzed, concussed, etc. The fact that it occurs within the context of a game/athletic competition is certainly a mitigating factor, although not a particularly strong one in Meriweather's case, since he has shown a pattern of doing this repeatedly despite growing financial penalties/suspensions. Look, I'm not for hitting women, but the fact that a person might be of the female gender doesn't make her impervious to causing serious damage if she happens to be a lunatic or crazy. Not saying I know exactly what Marshall has done because I wasn't there, but because he got in some scuffles with this chick doesn't, in my mind, anyways, elevate him to some incredible scumbag relative to Meriweather.
  19. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 28, 2013 -> 10:35 AM) 5 years ago Merriwether is getting bonuses and featured regularly on "JACKED UP" segments with those same "dirty" hits. In my book beating your girlfriend is a much, much worse offense and he's absolutely right to call out Marshall on it. Why? He could literally kill someone with the way he launches, and he's continued to do it repeatedly despite fines, suspensions, and clear instruction from the League to stop doing it. Why is this a "much, much worse offense" than Marshall getting into some fight with his crazy ex?
  20. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 28, 2013 -> 09:43 AM) Is response #1 a threat? Or is he saying that he doesn't have a choice now but to tackle lower which will result in more injuries? He's got a point about Marshall. It's incredible how virtually no one has mentioned that in his time with the Bears. To his credit, he has apparently moved on with his life in the right direction.
  21. I remember a lot of folks here giving Ozzie kudos for the way he managed the pitching staff in that playoff run. We shouldn't take away from that now just because of the way things went downhill. Ozzie did a fabulous job of managing that club and he deserves respect for that. Unfortunately, that's about where the respect ends.
  22. Haha...I think I'm the only McCarver apologist alive, but he really doesn't bother me. I actually think he brings a lot to the broadcast that is fine in a baseball broadcast, but that wouldn't really work in a sport that actually requires a lot of analysis. I guess I'd rather have a guy that's easy to listen to than a guy that might be a better analyst but whom I find it difficult to listen to (Buck Martinez).
  23. QUOTE (zenryan @ Oct 27, 2013 -> 07:17 PM) I love in-game wagering. At the 2 minute warning of the first half in the Broncos game, 5dimes had the game total at 39.5. I unloaded on that. Of course it was still 7-0 at that point but Washington was already in FG range. Plus the Broncos are just crazy good on offense in the second half. I also tried to get Redskins team total over 13.5 earlier in that drive but I was too late. Hah, I try to avoid in-game just because I get a bit impulsive at times... I took Pittsburgh -6 and Denver -7.5, both at half, separately and parlayed together. Helped offset a frustrating day otherwise.
