White Sox have flipped from sellers to buyers
iamshack replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (mataipaepae @ May 31, 2012 -> 06:58 PM) I wonder if the mets would be interested in gavin floyd, jordan danks, nestor molina or simon castro, and a lower level prospect or two for david wright? I like quintana over floyd right now. And weight as the number two hitter would be great. I keep reading they want to sign him. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 31, 2012 -> 11:31 AM) At the end of the day, they need to feel comfortable, so you can't really fault them for that. This city has a lot of slick lawyers that don't really care about what they're doing, just that they're doing it. I had a case I was bringing in where a downstate high school kid had a lung procedure done and the doctor left the last inch of the needle in his lung. He was probably going to get a scholarship to play D1 football but then this thing put it all into jeopardy. That and he became basically uninsurable because of it. It would have been worth some dough. I had them all signed up and everything, but the mother wouldn't agree to put in the contract that she'd be responsible for our costs (thinking that if we spent thousands on experts or whatever and then didn't get any money at the end she'd have to pay us back). I told her this wasn't an issue at all, that we'd front the cost, that they'd already offered her some money without any attorneys in the mix and that it wouldn't be a problem at all. Still, she didnt' want to do that. I pleaded for my partner to waive that in the contract but he refused to take the case. It was a sure fire six figure type case but he didn't feel like "paying for the privilege" of representing her. That 33% would have been great in my pocket for this newborn of mine on the way. Yeah, I remember those questions coming up...all the fee structure stuff, etc... I just went into my saved email and read through some of the stuff I saved...PAINFUL...I need to delete them.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ May 31, 2012 -> 12:21 PM) If the season ended today, he would be NL manager of the year. As a matter of fact, he'll get ML manager of the year as the AL nominee will forfeit the award. I heard he is up for Time's Man of the Year Award...

Ok, just went back and looked the girl up...$18.9 million was the settlement. I think the firm I was at would have probably done better... I guess she wasn't a substitute teacher, but she had her kid there in the lab and allowed him to participate...I just remember there were so many negligent things the teacher did... http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/01/bu...rs_story_o.html

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 31, 2012 -> 10:57 AM) How the heck did they blow it? I should clarify...they didn't blow the case, they blew the relationship with the parents somehow. So this happened near Akron, OH. We were trying to convince the family to go with a prominent and experienced Chicago firm rather than some small-time dirtbag from Akron. I spent all kinds of time with the family explaining this. Myself, the attorney I knew, and the Managing Partner of the firm made several trips to Akron to meet with the family. As I mentioned, I was sort of dating the sister, so I constantly had my finger on the pulse of the situation and kept the firm updated...finally they agreed to the representation, and I actually remember having a few celebratory drinks the evening I got the text from the attorney telling me this. Then the next day I am talking to the sister and she is saying the parents aren't sure about the attorney...that he doesn't seem to connect with them...that the parents of the other kids involved think they should all go with a firm in Akron, that it will look greedy if they bring in some big firm from Chicago.... As far as I see it, the attorney didn't do a good job of making the family feel comfortable and explaining to them how they were more equipped to get them the best possible result at the end of the day. Instead, he tried too hard to impress them with how smart he was and how much money he had...I still don't really know everything, to be honest...I just know I handed this thing on a platter to them, gave them every piece of inside info they could possibly want, and they still couldn't seal the deal.

QUOTE (Jake @ May 31, 2012 -> 11:28 AM) I think AJ was happy to take a HBP for spiking Zobrist. Throwing at Zobrist may have had something to do with Becks being hit or there very well may be something we don't know about Zobrist's reaction to the AJ play. What people say to each other in those situations...we cannot know but who knows, maybe Zobrist said something personal/offensive/worse than "f*** you" Zobrist stated in that interview that he told AJ what he thought about the slide...whether that happened when the slide occurred, or in subsequent PA's, I dunno...but he said he told AJ and AJ didn't seem to think it was a big deal. My guess is the throwing behind Zobrist might have been more a reaction to that conversation, which explains why Zobrist was so quick to laugh about it at the plate.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 31, 2012 -> 10:45 AM) Ugh, that sucks so much. For everyone involved. It took me about 2 months to get over them blowing that case...I kept going back to visit the girl to keep things in perspective...and that helped. And I was glad that the attorneys they did use seemed to do a decent enough job to get them a good settlement, although it was such an easy fact pattern that anyone would have had a difficult time botching it.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 31, 2012 -> 11:26 AM) Not in Jan/Feb .... Umm...yeah...I've been saying since last year that if we can get these guys turned around we had plenty of talent to contend...

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 31, 2012 -> 11:25 AM) Wow dude. I would have shopped that around a little. Most plaintiff firms will give you a 33% finders fee. That was part of the deal...my family knows a prominent attorney there. I was still a law student but my dad is an attorney. The deal was that one of us would have gotten the 1/3 of their third standard deal. I would have literally been a millionaire before the age of thirty. This case was an attorney's wet dream: beautiful hs student, athlete, academic scholarship, junior miss america pageant, attending an exclusive private high school with a large endowment. She is in biology class and they have a substitute teacher. They are performing a lab experiment, which includes some bunson burners. The teacher fails to instruct any of the students to wear their safety goggles. Does many, many other negligent things. Causes a minor explosion which burns several students, one in particular, who is exposed to third-degree burns to some 75% of her body, including most of her face. There was huge negligence at every step and turn, the girl was absolutely beautiful, intelligent, athletic, etc. I met the girl's sister through a friend and we began dating briefly. I recommended her family talk to this attorney, as he was a member of a very prominent Chicago firm. I set it all up, made several trips to Akron, Ohio to visit with the family, etc. Got a call one night from the attorney saying the family had agreed to be represented by the firm, all that was needed was their signatures. Then it all fell apart...

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 31, 2012 -> 11:22 AM) I love it. I hope there are posts proving me wrong for years. By the same token, I'm curious as to why I get no props for being the first one on here to say the Sox should contend. Posters on here had the Sox losing 90+ games in Jan/Feb. Because you aren't...there are plenty of people on here thinking the Sox would contend...

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 31, 2012 -> 10:13 AM) Just because he is a legend doesn't mean those young Dodger fans are necessarily wrong. Just like with any job, sometimes time passes people up. I used to enjoy listening to Hawk, but those days have passed, it happens. (I don't listen to Scully, so I can't comment on him, just generalizing) Oh I understand...and I wasn't trying to state whether or not I thought anyone was necessarily "wrong." I don't think Steve and those who agree with him are "wrong" about Hawk -- it's a matter of opinion. I'm just trying to point out that there is more than one perspective here...those that Hawk wears on because they aren't familiar with Hawk's "time zone," those that appeciate Hawk because they are from his "time zone," those that are annoyed by his homer schtick, and those that love him for it. No one is wrong here. It's not black and white, either.

QUOTE (G&T @ May 31, 2012 -> 10:44 AM) Funny thing is, when I started working at that firm my dad told me to be careful. I was working a lot of hours because I wanted to prove myself, but he kept saying they are going to work me into the ground, then screw me over. He's a doctor so he hates lawyers anyway, but he was right. However, I've met a ton of great people since. I got a job clerking at a fancy pants firm basically because I knew a guy there and I brought them this monster case...they proceeded to offend the family and blow the chance to represent them. The guy who did represent the family settled the thing for $30 million or something. They kept me on until I graduated and sort of unceremoniously kicked me to the curb.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 31, 2012 -> 09:52 AM) Why should I be forced to watch the game on mute because the announcer is a senile old man? Speaking of....I was watching the Dodgers game last night as I went to sleep, as I often do, because I love Vin Scully and last night we had Gallardo going against Kershaw. A few times, Scully didn't have a clue what was going on. The Brewers had runners on 2nd and 3rd in a 1-0 game where the Dodgers were leading. Carlos Gomez hits a single to left field, and both runs easily score. However, Scully, in his advanced age, says something to the effect of "and the runner will score from third and we have a tie ballgame..." It took him about 15 seconds to even recognize another run had scored and the Brewers were now actually leading 2-1. I'm sure the producer was in his ear telling him this. Later the same inning, a Brewer hit a ball down the right field line that was clearly fair. Scully says something like "And that is a flyball that will eventually end up coming down in foul territory...and Ethier makes the catch, crossing over the line into fair territory at the last moment..." Meanwhile, the ball was never foul, Ethier never went into foul territory, and caught the ball clearly well in fair territory. The point is, Scully makes mistakes like this all the time, and I am sure it annoys the hell out of the younger Dodger fans. However, Scully is an absolute legend in the industry and I'm certain the older Dodgers fans simply adore him. I know I tune in specifically to hear him call games, because it's like music to my ears. And I'm not even a Dodger fan.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 31, 2012 -> 10:31 AM) One is a comedy sports radio show, one is a play by play announcer for a 111 year old Major League Baseball franchise. It is only a comedy sports radio show because Boers seems incapable of it being anything other than that.

QUOTE (G&T @ May 31, 2012 -> 09:26 AM) Problem with networking for me was that my network was full of jags when I graduated from law school. I worked for a firm for two years in school but when the market tanked, the managing partner's friend came looking for work and I didn't get the open associate position. I worked my ass off for them but that meant nothing. Then they basically left me out to dry. They were happy to be references when necessary but wouldn't make a call to get me an interview or anything. While it sucked not getting that job I've always suspected that it was a good thing. That's not a good network. Since then I got a masters degree and took whatever jobs I could to rebuild a network. Everyone I've met since has been the opposite. They make calls on my behalf, write recommendations if they can, etc. I took a job at the law school in an academic capacity and started working in their law clinics to make sure I had client experience as well. My network is now law professors and deans from around the country that I've met at conferences I ran (not just attended) in addition to those I've worked for. We moved back to WI and my network actually has connections here and are willing to put my resume in front of anyone they can for me. That's a good network. I don't know if it will land me a job, but it's nice to know that someone is willing to vouch for my work. And I have experience in academia (a posh landing spot for sure). Meanwhile, by working in the clinics and actually leading cases I learned what I liked and didn't like about litigation which has pointed me towards a career path that I think I'd excel in. So essentially, I'm 29 and my career has never really lifted off. But I feel that I'm closer to landing in a perfect spot that I would have otherwise been if things had gone as "planned". I've not utilized one connection I made in law school in the 4 years it has been since I graduated. I hate to say it, but I don't trust people in the legal field as far as I can throw them.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 31, 2012 -> 09:14 AM) I'm a fan of theirs, but I see where the other side comes from. I actually think they are way smarter than people give them credit for, but they lack the ability to hear others out and discuss both sides of the story, which leads to their making fun of everyone else. I've just learned to tune out when they start being idiots. The fact that the Hawks thing was on Deadspin within 10 minutes, and Yahoo front page later in the day, shows how funny it was to all. Bernstein actually is very intelligent...but he is incredibly arrogant. Boers, is just a freaking goofball who brings Bernstein down to his level, which results in the abuse of their position to just make an ass out of everyone they disagree with. I would love it if Boers actually had to debate something seriously, without being able to turn it into a 3rd grade joke or without his buddy Bernstein jumping in to save the day.

QUOTE (Jake @ May 31, 2012 -> 09:05 AM) Have to wonder if Morel hid/downplayed the injury to try to stay in the lineup. It always looks bad in hindsight, but in the moment as a player you're thinking that it'll just go away and you won't have someone potentially playing well in your position while you're resting. Of course there is some chance that his injuries have been played up by the team to explain his poor play. I don't know. My issue with Morel is this ALWAYS seems to be his concern, and it appears to drastically affect his play. He seems to go through the majority of the season with a defensive approach at the plate designed to produce "adequate" results. Then when it is clear he won't be sent down, he lets loose and swings like he is capable of, with his natural ability, and rakes. I'm not sure if this theory is correct or not, but if it is, he needs to have the confidence to take the latter approach for the entire season, and let the results speak for themselves.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 31, 2012 -> 09:56 AM) That's my whole point. They are replaying it everywhere nationally, to laugh AT him, not to show how good of an announcer he is. They kept replaying it on B & B, and I was laughing my ass off too because of how crazy & senile Hawk is. Not that I don't agree with your overall point, but Boers & Berstein are certainly no barometer for what is something that should be laughed at or not...those two are complete hacks that substitute their ability to make fun of others for their utter lack of any other skills or abilities.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 31, 2012 -> 09:12 AM) “It was pretty obvious he was trying to throw at me,’’ Zobrist said. “I think the umpire knew that too … it was smart [of Wegner] to make that call without having any warnings to either bench.’’ F*ck yourself, dude. You didn't even get hit. These are Major League players and if Quintana wanted to hit you, he would have. It was simply a warning and should have been simply followed by a warning from that dolt Wegner. I watched the video of this interview...he was pretty critical of AJ...

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 31, 2012 -> 09:16 AM) Like I said, there's some iffyness here. I kept saying something was really off/different about him this year because of the strikeouts, but there was virtually nothing said about it being his back until he went for that cortisone shot in early May. There's no one saying he hid anything from the medical staff, no one seems negative about him at all, but they took forever in saying anything about it, and then there's that allusion to the dietary thing. Whatever the answer is, in hindsight yeah, seems like giving Lilli/Esco extra playing time a lot earlier would have been the right move, but for some reason the team decided against that, and they haven't given us their reasoning. Yeah, because the injuries had nothing to do with him sucking until very recently. And now that he's hurt, everyone wants to believe the injury was the reason why. I don't buy it.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 31, 2012 -> 08:09 AM) There's some vagueness to this, if you remember the article where he's also talking about having some dietary/weight loss issues that he didn't want to go into more details about, so it's hard to say exactly. But perhaps, the best answer is...who was available? Brandon Inge might have been an option but the Sox couldn't claim him on waivers without picking up a lot of money, and he would then have had the choice where he went as a free agent. The Sox could have been in on him and we wouldn't have known. Other than that, they weren't going to give Lillibridge or Escobar everyday time at 3b, that's pretty clear, and it's so early in the season no one is trading away an adequate 3b starting option if they're not being bought out. I don't believe this. There was nothing Brent Morel was doing that would have made you frightened to play Escobar or Lillibridge at 3rd in his absence in order to get him healthy for the remainder of the season.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 31, 2012 -> 08:55 AM) Morel has to earn it. If he hits well on this minor league stint, then he's earned a callup. If he gets playing time in the bigs, his leash has to be short. I have no problem with this...I just don't understand how if all his woes this season were related to this injury, and it was this easily fixable, why the hell they didn't do it a month ago?
-
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ May 31, 2012 -> 07:39 AM) They say Morel's struggles were due to his back problem. It's a pretty convenient excuse and I'm not sure I believe it, but it's plausible. The only reason people are slobbering all over O-Dog is because we're winning. He's played competent defense, but his bat has been close to Morel's. Taking those two things into account, I'd like to see if Morel's failures were, in fact, due to injury and relegate O-Dog to a bench role while sending Escobar down. If Morel continues to fail, give the job to Hudson or find another solution. Hudson has certainly not "won" the job, he's just proven that he can successfully take his crappy bat to a new position on the field. The results may be similar right now, but his PAs have been of MUCH higher quality than Morel's...IMO, if you have Hudson Morel's PAs over the remaining course of the year, the results would separate themselves gradually over time...
