QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 02:53 PM) As I said much, much earlier. If we are going to compare the best and the worse of processed animal foods, than the conclusion will be much different. But as long as we are feeding the animal and they are not hunting and killing it themselves, the system is different. We're providing food for an animal. How close to perfect is the dog owner comfortable with? I don't have a dog in this fight, just some things I was thinking. We want this wild dog as long as it doesn't pee or poop in the house, rip the carpet trying to make a den, is agressive when other animals invade its territory, etc. The whole pet thing becomes strange to me at some point. And I love dogs and cats. Tex...it's not a wild dog thing...it's about feeding the dog the foods its biology digests most efficiently...I understand what you are trying to get at...but our pets are not some "experiment" for most of us...

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 02:52 PM) Humans absolutely know what they should and should not eat for the most part. They just don't care because they are obsessed with sugar and fat and everything that's been processed to taste delicious. Humans just don't care. So over the past 50 years, our government has deliberately recommended we eat diets which produce high rates of cancers and heart disease?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 02:41 PM) I don't believe this is true. We have plenty of good ideas on how to feed ourselves. The real issue is how to do so "Cheaply". Which is also the real issue for dogs as well. We know it's not exactly good to be downing tons of high fructose corn syrup and cheeseburgers...but that's one real cheap way to get your calorie intake. Loading up dog food with processed corn may not be the best way to feed a dog...but it's a darn cheap way to do so. Read In Defense of Food and then come back to me.

QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 02:20 PM) We would also have to look at the knowledge that humans have and our ability to manufacturer pet foods. If we wish to continue to compare a dog in the wild, is modern pet food better or worse than scaveging old carcasses? Is the variety of nutrients we can pack into a single serving better or worse than the variety that a dog would have in the wild? As you mentioned, food is sometimes scarce and the animal will eat what it can. I have a hard time believing that we cannot manufacture a pet food that is equal or better than what a dog would receive in the wild. Is what you are feeding your dogs close to what they would receive in the wild? The entire animal? Would they receive that bounty every day of their lives? Wouldn't feeding them an entire animal twice a week be more aligned with the wild experience? Just some thougths I found interesting. Tex, We don't even understand how best to feed ourselves. You think we can outsmart nature when it comes to feeding our dogs? The best approach is to feed as large a variety of good proteins as possible. That way we are most likely to cover all the nutrients dogs need. Unfortunately, this is very expensive and beyond the reach of most people for large dogs. Check out a product like Darwin's versus something like what most people feed Iam's. There is a huge, huge difference, because one caters to the needs of the dog, while the other caters to the needs of the dog's owner.

QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 01:05 PM) I am going to assume that the majority of those dogs are eating processed foods. Doesn't it follow then that breeders are selecting for things like "Quality of coat" "Behavior" "appearance" while on this processed diet? Wouldn't they go hand in hand? Bottom line it seems as if these pets are far removed from their wild ancestors. I'm not certain how appropriate this wild model really is. Ok, you're going to stack tens of thousands of years against 80 years and expect to see some sort of evolutionary change? Come on, Tex...
  6. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 12:33 PM) I honestly believe most issues people have with workout programs like P90X (or a lesser extent Insanity) is how everyone ties together the nutritional guide with the workouts. When you're dividing your calories into certain percentages for protein, carbohydrate, and fats depending upon your progress in the program, you're consuming your life with what amounts to perfect nutrition. So when people are tired of putting together the ideal percentages the end result is: "well, everyone says I can't get the desired results without exactly following the nutrition guide, so whats the point of doing p90x?" Then they'll just quit and follow a Paleo Diet or some other fad. Last September, before beginning P90x I followed the nutritional guide formula for determining your caloric level. At 170 pounds it recommended I eat 2400 calories. I jumped it up to 3,000 because that seemed too low. But even then, after completing the workouts and eating what was required I wasn't feeling right. I wasn't feeling full enough for my liking. After completing a round of P90x in January, I had dropped to 160. I'm not suggesting the results were bad, but I just thought to myself this wasn't how I wanted to live my life. For one, I was too thin at 6'2 -- but additionally, the whole making sure this serving equals 100 calories, this scoop of peanut butter is one tablespoon, was maddening. I hated it. It's almost like it changes your mind for the worse. You begin to obsess over it. I loved the workouts, even though Horton's voice had become muted a long time back. But the nutrition....that alone was making me regret another round. It was then I just decided, f*** it. I'm going to find a collection of healthy foods and eat however much I want. If I gain a few extra percentages of body fat, so be it. Now I'm coming up on on three months post new diet phase. I feel better eating until I'm full and not stressing about how to divide carbs, fat, and protein throughout the day. If I had to guess, I'd say I easily take in over 4,000 calories a day. Although 4,000 calories in healthy eating terms is a TON of food. I doubt anyone here eats the amount of sweet potatoes that I do on a given day, haha. In this time, I've gained fifteen pounds and still remain at 10% body fat. I'm also very active with my job and playing sports, so there are additional factors to consider, but overall, I would have accepted gains in body fat. My advice is not to ignore nutrition; but forget about the calorie breakdown. Follow the workout programs and concentrate on selecting healthy foods, all the while eating as much as you desire. Is your goal to be fit, healthy, and look good; or have a body with 5% fat and a lifestyle that fixates on every morsel of food? If you're overweight, as many are who follow these programs, you'll still lose weight if you continue working out everyday. It's difficult to have a high caloric surplus eating healthy unless you purposely try to, as I did. Here here! I agree...you'll never be happy obsessing over nutrition that way...you cannot maintain it in the long-term unless you are some kind of robot or social recluse that never leaves your house...in which case, what does it matter how good you look? I believe in moderation in all things. I try to use common sense in formulating my diet; eat lots of fruits and vegetables, eat organic, eat good quality proteins, and allow myself some guilty pleasures every once in a while, whether that be putting away a six pack on a Saturday night, or having a sundae on the weekend. As for fat percentages, or weight, I don't know, nor do I care to know. All I care about is how I feel and look. If I feel good, and I like how things are looking, I don't change much. If I feel I am slipping a bit too much, I try to get back on the wagon a bit. Even going through P90X2 currently, I have modified the program to be more flexible for my needs. I feel like I am getting the benefits out of it without having to follow a schedule that is ultra rigid, and I've been very happy with it.
  7. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 11:26 AM) Thing is, I believe Ozzie knew exactly what he was saying and he meant it. This is less about ignorance and more about arrogance, IMO. He was trying to sound intelligent by taking a bold stance....unfortunately he's not bright enough to understand the implications such a statement might have to his new community.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 09:56 AM) Shack...I get why baseball might be tempted, but let's imagine that baseball had an anti-semite in their midst. With a thousand players, it's certainly not out of the question. Should baseball suspend people, in an official capacity for controversial statements or political beliefs? I can see why the league/commish would act on Schott...the owners are what, effectively contractors allowed into the league by the MLB main office, and the MLB main office is given extraordinary authority by Congress to regulate them and the game. Furthermore, there's no one else above the owners who has the authority to react to anything done by owners other than the League, while Ozzie has the team level to deal with, and I still think the team ought to care about this a lot more than the league. I understand, but it's a catch-all that allows them to police anyone employed by the League or its teams, I imagine. Ozzie is a fairly high-profile character as far as baseball celebrities go, and I imagine they don't wish anyone associated with them to openly disparage the suffering that any particular group has been afflicted with. If I was Selig, I'd fine him and suspend him 5 games to be served concurrently with the Marlins' suspension...just to get my point across but not to have a practical effect on his management schedule.
  9. QUOTE (IowanSoxFan @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 09:57 AM) Speaking of walkout songs, I noticed that Beckham had some country song in the Spring. Tell me he didn't change "Your Love" by the Outfield, that was the best. Yeah, I think he was using Chicken Fried...
  10. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 10:54 AM) Whew. Thank god! I thought I was trippin' again (I got blazed last night). I literally out-loud asked myself WTF is a walk-out son? I thought it was like for one of those pre-game celebrations or something...the Rangers each had a kid standing by them the other night...
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 09:40 AM) MLB didn't do anything back when people like Delgado were sitting for the National Anthem did they? I'd actually have a problem with MLB acting in an official capacity here. The Marlins I can understand, that's their home base. It shouldn't be MLB's job to regulate unpopular political beliefs amongst people within their league, that should be directly between the employer and employee. Yeah, but they can always use that "acting against the best interests of the game" clause...
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 10:27 AM) This is his third at the major league level. The first two he gave up zero runs both years, in a total of 20.1 IP. And as another poster pointed out, it's the first with Toronto, the first with an organization that doesn't care to nurture him along but expects him to produce now... There may be something to your point about starting off this way, but really, the sample size is too small to really take anything away from it with any kind of certainty.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 10:24 AM) Bob Nightengale ‏ @BNightengale Guillen says "He prefers to die,'' before he would ever vote for Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. #MLB #Marlins Didn't he used to claim he admired Chavez too?
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 09:00 AM) usually he wouldn't get off to slow starts though. These were the first ever runs he has given up in April. Usually his bad outings came at the end of the season as he tired. There is no "usually" for him, as you stated earlier. How many other April's has he pitched in?
  15. Was watching a video of the PAP training being done in California at a training facility called P3...all the sudden Kyle Korver pops up....at least he is trying...
  16. He had none of his pitches working for him. That will happen occasionally. He had a few outings like that in our uniform as well, but he always bounced back.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 07:48 AM) Considering that so far, 2 managers have failed to get through to Rios enough to get him to focus and correct mistakes like the one made yesterday, it will be an interesting challenge to see what Robin can do to correct him on this. I can live with the mistake he made yesterday...it's part of the package you get from a talented OF defender. What is far more important is that he get his bat going. He's been doing a better job of having good at bats, but other than the home run, he hasn't hit too many balls hard this year. The hit he had yesterday was nice, but he should have hit home run #2 on that pitch to be honest. Baby steps...
  18. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 08:29 AM) Did anyone else want to see Fukudome hit for Rios after Rios made that error in right? I saw a right-handed pitcher on the mound and figured it was the perfect opportunity. Of course maybe it's a little early to react like that, but I thought maybe Ventura would send a message. Rios is an important part of this team. As much as most of you guys can't tolerate him, he's owed a lot of money over the course of the next 3 years. It's in our best interests to bring him back around to at least mediocrity somehow. By all accounts he's been working very hard to try and get his career back on track. This is not the time to send a message and make him pout for the next two months. As much as it might suck to have to deal with a fragile ego, or whatever you want to call it, our success in large part depends on him making some key contributions to this team for the next few years.

Here are my two Danes...big one is about 15 months, little one about 5 months...
  20. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 10, 2012 -> 12:14 AM) I'm on record as being just fine with the Santos trade, but he's not a one trick pony. He will be streaky because there isn't a lot of deception...you know what you are going to get. But even in the early season, he's averaged 94.1 with his fastball and has a career average of 95.5 MPH. Joe Nathan, a guy who anybody should agree with was a power pitcher, has never averaged 95 MPH with his fastball during any season of his career. Santos can bring it just fine. I haven't seen him pitch, but it's certainly possible that he doesn't have a feel for his slider yet - because he's not using it - or he's not getting ahead of hitters - because it is his put away pitch. That's a pitch that he really needs to use, at minimum, 1 of every 4 pitches, but because of its movement, it's really meant to be thrown for balls and for it to appear as a fastball. He reminds me of Brad Lidge, and Brad Lidge was one of the streakiest relievers of all time. He may have a year where he's absolutely terrible, but at some point, he'll bounce right back and be stellar again. Santos is going to be just fine. He's left some fastballs up that have been hit hard. Yesterday, he couldn't throw the slider for a strike and was leaving the fastball up. He's going to have an outing like that once in a while. I'll bet he bounces back and converts his next 15 opportunities. As for the Sox arms, it's been 4 games, people. Santiago is a nice find but he's going to get whacked around a few times himself. I really love Reed, and I think ultimately he's the long-term closer.
  21. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 09:01 PM) Bubba Watson from 30 yards into the woods and out of the mulch? You kidding me? One of the best shots I've ever seen. Has never taken a lesson in his life.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 09:55 PM) Pretty funny that former Sox RF Ryan Sweeney broke Papa Grande's save string in DET and now beat ex-Sox Santos in TOR. Ouch. Meanwhile, the bullpen is seemingly our greatest strength and we have theoretically five guys who have the ability to close in Santiago, Thornton, Crain, Reed and even Nathan Jones. Darvish is going to get an ugly win, but it counts. 98 pitches in just five innings, 5 ER, FB 92-93-94 but not anything that was just totally dominating or awe-inspiring. Let's not get crazy now...
  23. QUOTE (jeffro2525 @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 09:12 PM) Sale looked great. The Sox look like they have 5 starters that are going to give them a chance to win everyday...can't ask for anything more than that...well, maybe some offense. Let's see more out of Humber...to me, he's a greater concern than Sale, who I think ends p being our best SP...
  24. Bad luck for SS...shoud have had the guy at the plate but a bad hop gets away from Arencibia...
