  1. Now they're applauding Antonio Gueray for body-slamming Alex Smith. These guys are just idiots.
  2. I think it's pretty irresponsible for Matt Millen and Joe Thiesman to applaud the Chargers' player for staying in the punt coverage after losing his helmet early in the play. Isn't this the exact kind of thing the NFL is trying the prevent? Regardless of how "tough" the player is, you don't need to get killed on a play because you're diving around amongst players with helmets on. Disgusting that Millen and Thiesman would be shortsighted enough to praise him for it.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 06:26 PM) Too bad we already traded Linebrink because that would have been a nice bad contract for bad contract swap. Except the BoSox don't have to pay him if they don't want to, whereas we did have to pay Linebrink. Papelbon is probably worth something decent at that number, especially come the deadline. Much more than just having to accept a bad contract.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 06:25 PM) Then again, the Cards are 4-9 now that he is gone. No one's denying that Kurt Warner was great. I think it's just funny that he was whining about having to be the focal point of that team. Seemed like everyone else did too.
  5. Kurt Warner digging his own grave on the NFL network talking about all the pressure he faced last year because he felt as though he had to be the savior of the Cardinals every single snap. Can only imagine the Cardinals current/former players cannot be particularly happy about those comments. Deion chided him for whining about it, saying "that's the reason you have to pick up your paycheck with a wheelbarrow every week."
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 04:04 PM) If its the third year that makes the difference to you, then think of it this way - its $1M for that extra year. Exactly. I don't get the huge distinction in years as being a negative, since the cost of the two contracts is essentially the same.
  7. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 03:50 PM) Agree to disagree, I guess. I'll just take my years of first-hand experience being surrounded by their fans, going to their games, listening to their sports talk in person and on the radio over whatever argument you could possibly make. You do that. And I'll take the same sports discussion I have had with all kinds of their fans, what I have read in their newspapers and on their message boards, the numerous games I watch on television via ESPN and the Extra Innings package and NESN, the articles on national and local websites, the interviews of former players and coaches, logic, reason, past history, pop culture, and we'll just agree to disagree.
  8. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 03:11 PM) Go listen to a sports radio show in Boston. Go read a website dedicated to their teams. Sure, they have fans who are just as level-headed as any in baseball, but they have many more over-the-top fans than most places (I assume, but certainly more than Chicago). And they are a lot meaner and far less forgiving. I have. And I've done the same with New York. And Philly. And Chicago. And LA. Red Sox fans are what White Sox fans would be if there was no Cubs. We would have the entire City of Chicago supporting us and we would be in an all-out war against NY for annual supremacy. We would hate NY and the Yankees, and we would be obsessed with our own team because of the resulting rivalry. Red Sox fans are smart, and they are certainly passionate. But they are not like NY and they are not like Philly. They support guys like Kevin Millar and Billy Mueller and "Mikey Lowe" because they are working-class guys who bust their asses and care about the game. Certainly if Bobby goes there and s***s the field and doesn't give a crap about his weight, then yes, he will catch some heat over it. But he would catch heat over that in any major city in the US. But if he pitches well and contributes to the Red Sox success, even if he has some tough outings, they aren't going to turn on him and all bring "FATASS" signs or something. Boston is a working-class, blue-collar city. Bobby is a working-class, blue-collar kind of guy. IMHO, he'll fit in just fine.
  9. QUOTE (TomPickle @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 03:07 PM) Is Henry Rodriguez the guy that pitched in the Future's Game a couple years back and threw 98-100? I'm not sure as to the future's game reference, but he can certainly throw 100.
  10. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 02:58 PM) I lived there for six years, but whatever you say. Hey, great reply! I guess I'll just take your word on all things Boston because you happened to live there. I mean, it's not like there is tv or the internet or anything... Since you're the expert Milk, maybe you could argue your case? Obviously if he goes there and completely bombs, he'll face some adversity, but he's not coming in as some savior or anything. They've embraced all kinds of guys that are down on their luck or are just mediocre players in the past, simply because they seem to like them personally or they have made their best effort on the field.
  11. A's acquired Willingham, per MLB trade rumors for Henry Rodriguez (who's got a hell of an arm) and OF Corey Brown.
  12. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 02:47 PM) I don't see this going well for Jenks. The media will tear him apart if he's anything but very good. The fans and writers will rip him relentlessly for his weight and work ethic. If you're one of those people who thought we treated him unfairly in Chicago, get ready for something special. I don't necessarily agree. Sawks fans, while rabid fans, are not necessarily brutal in the personal sense that Phillies and NY fans can be. I think the fans will identify with him and he'll do pretty well there.
  13. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 02:49 PM) Someone send Greg a link to the Bosox equivalent to Soxtalk. He'll go insane when he reads everyone trashing Jenks after a blown save. http://sonsofsamhorn.net/forum/5-red-sox-forum/
  14. Good for you, Bobby...you'll fit in well with the City of Boston. Just stay out of trouble. Thanks for everything you did in a White Sox uniform.
  15. Well, you have to put it in context. These guys, while famous in their day, were not making salaries proportionate to what professional athletes today are. They were making salaries that put them above what the average American was making, but it certainly did not put them in the top 1% of American breadwinners, as today's professional athletes are. Not that that takes away from their service to their country, because it does not. But it's just not the same.
  16. QUOTE (joeynach @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 10:55 AM) Insurance payments from Peavy's injury should not be overlooked in the extra $$ to spend conversation. I was thinking that money was probably allocated to Edwin Jackson's contract.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 12:36 PM) Bringing this thread back to where it started... I have mixed emotions about this. I've had the iPhone 4 since it's inception and I've yet to have any desire to use Facetime. Perhaps it's because I'm single, so I don't have a spouse or a kid to miss and want to video chat with, but I also find it a bit creepy for some reason. The display on the iPhone is definitely a step-up, but I certainly have no desire to fork out more cash to Apple (and you guys know how much I love giving Apple my money) just for the ability to facetime. I guess the idea that it will be thinner and lighter is good, but again, not anything I am too concerned about. Overall, after 8 months or whatever it has been, I'm quite pleased with the product, especially with some of the features the recent updates have allowed, such as wireless printing, multi-tasking, and airplay or whatever it is called. My guess is a new iPad would convince even more people to buy the product, just as each new generation of iPhone has. I'll be interested to see how this develops.
  18. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 08:01 AM) And I don't think they are going to use their prize young pitcher, who went all the way from draft to MLB the same year, as a LOOGY. So, they are looking for an actual situational lefty. You'd think Pena would be back as the long man, but KW has been quoted saying Pena is going to be in the back of the pen now. Unless he's traded, I'd be shocked if Infante, who was in the majors last September, wasn't on the opening day bullpen. My assumption isn't so much about cutting payroll, though I do believe that's a factor - its about trying do something in the way of trading Quentin and still getting something good in RF. Much as I'd rather, in an ideal world, see Sale in AAA starting, the way the org is talking, he's almost assuredly going to be in the Sox come April. Kenny pretty much implied about a week ago that Sale would be starting. I posted it in the catch-all thread. Trib
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 15, 2010 -> 09:14 PM) I think that an article would say that about anyone the Sox signed as a reliever. It may be what got him to sign here, actually.
  20. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 15, 2010 -> 08:14 PM) Eh, it's really hard to get excited about the signing of a middle reliever especially when we gave him 3 years, these contracts have like a 90% failure rate. But hey, at least we're trying. Gotta love that. I'm not going to worry about it at this point...if we're going to put this team together this year, we may as well take a shot at putting it all together right now and worry about these other contracts down the line.
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 15, 2010 -> 06:08 PM) I don't think the Yankees are really that desperate. They're still a playoff team in all likelihood, and they're still going to sign a few players. If something comes up in the middle of the season, they can make the move then. Cliff Lee is the kind of pitcher that goes on the market once every 2-3 years, and the Yankees wanted to get him. He was a luxury as opposed to a necessity. He would be a luxury for anyone, but considering they have CC, Hughes, and Burnett as the base of their rotation, and they can't really bring back Pavano, they do need to address their SP.
  22. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 15, 2010 -> 06:21 PM) Who cares about the Vikings, they're done. It wouldn't be fair to teams like the Packers or Tampa, who may be in a close race with Chicago. That's a fair point. They should allow the Vikings to choose one of those three indoor sites.
  23. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 15, 2010 -> 12:23 PM) No. It's being played at the University of Minnesota. I read that, but I have also heard some whispers about it possibly being moved to Soldier Field now.
  24. This is the price we are paying for signing PK instead of a lesser option such as Lee. Unless KW can move some salary, we're not going to be signing any $4 million relievers.
