  1. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 10:07 PM) That's where I goofed up, the team waiving the player can rescind the waiver. A team making a claim can't rescind the claim. So like I though, the only way to "block" someone from another team is to claim them yourself. Or simply an upcoming free agent on a non-contender. Not that I assume it likely, but can players' non-trade clauses come into play, like Derek Lee for example. Does he have any sort of "non-waive" rights? Yes.
  2. QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 10:56 PM) God dammit I keep missing this. I caught the first episode and have missed the last two cause I keep forgetting it's on Sundays which is such a pathetic day to have it on, but whatever. They re-air it like 25 times a week, trust me...
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 10:19 PM) Thinking back to the negotiations I would guess that the money has been set aside as well, because it sure sounded like they were only talking about money from this season. Well, looking at teams that might claim him...I don't know how far he falls...San Fran could claim him....Philly, especially if Howard is going to be out for any significant period of time...would Boston be crazy enough? Cincinnati? Should be really interesting, especially considering the Dodgers are now 6.5 out of the WC with 4 teams in front of them...
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 10:12 PM) Its hard to tell from that information what exactly the deferral process entails there. From the looks of it, I would guess the money has been set aside, because it specifically said without interest, but I wouldn't bet on it for sure. Right...which is why I wish someone in the media would get to the bottom of it! Rosenthal referred to some $6.7 million figure, but I'll bet he just took 2/3 of the $20M Ramirez makes this year, without really looking into the contract. But if the deferred money gets tied to actual time periods, such as a regular payment schedule, then it is conceivable that he is owed about $6-7 million for the remainder of the season. For that number, I could see someone claiming him possibly. For the other number, no chance.
  5. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 09:09 PM) I don't watch a ton of TV, but Roger Steerling has to have the best one liners on television. Just some classic ones tonight. Also nice to see some familiar faces re-appear tonight. Roger is awesome...he's my favorite male character on the show.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 10:04 PM) It would depend on how the deferred money was specifically assigned. If they just said that he gets x million from 2010 in 2015, then yes, the team that owns his contract would assume that liability. If it said that in 2010 his team was to defer x million dollars to be paid in 2015, the team that made that deferral would be responsible for that payment, unless a new agreement was made to supercede the original contract. 2 years/$45M (2009-10) re-signed by LA Dodgers as free agent 3/4/09 09:$25M, 10:$20M (voidable) Ramirez must decide whether to opt out of final year of deal before fifth day after 2009 World Series or Nov. 10, whichever is later $30M deferred without interest: for 2009, Ramirez receives $10M in 2009 and $15M in 3 installments of $5M paid each June 30, 2010 to 2012 if Ramirez does not opt out, he receives $5M in 2010 and $15M in 3 installments of $3,333,333 each on June 30, 2011 and 2012, and $8,333,333 on June 30, 2013 full no-trade clause Ramirez to donate $1M to club charity Ramirez exercised 2010 player option 11/6/09 It's pretty important who is responsible for the deferred money for the waiver claiming process.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 09:05 PM) no. I live on the west coast. I don't watch my shows at 6pm. Don't be a dick.
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 08:55 PM) can't believe Don f'd his sec. Jesus Christ, put a f***ing spoiler on that s*** dude.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 08:55 PM) You pick up the contract as is. If there are supposed to be payments made, the claiming team assumes them, unless it was something where the money was supposed to be put aside in the past into an interest bearing account or something of that ilk. So if Manny has money deferred from his 09' salary at 0% interest, that liability would be assumed by the claiming team? I have a really difficult time believing that... Basically then, no one is going to be able to claim ManRam and the Dodgers will be able to make a deal with anyone. If what you say is true, then he is still going to be owed some $25 million from the 2 year, $45 million contract he signed in 09'.
  10. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 09:25 PM) So, if a player is claimed off Waivers, can that team decide "Ah, nevermind"? Or can the team who placed him on waivers say "Too bad, we are giving him to you for free". I know they have like 72 hours to work out a trade or whatever the time frame is, but can the team just decide to give him away for free to the other team (like the Rios situation), and the recieving team not be able to stop it? Basically, I want to know if there is a risk to claiming a player you don't intend to actually acquire (like in a blocking situation). Yep. If you claim him, you have to be ready to take on his contract.
  11. I reallly want to know how waiver claims work in regards to deferred money. Kal, Qwerty, did you guys catch any part of the discussion Balta and I were having regarding Manny and his contract?
  12. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 08:50 PM) probably been answered a million times...but with Detroit and the Sox both having tomorrow off why aren't we playing the first half of the DH tomorrow? Because otherwise we would play 25 straight days.
  13. QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 08:31 PM) Ahhh... I got the info from an Arizona newspaper. Hometown spin I guess. Maybe they scored it generously, I dunno...I was watching the game though and it was a ground ball up the middle...

    i am drunk

    QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 08:22 PM) i had a feeling Don taco was going to do well, they were only open for about a year when I moved out. Mexican food that is reasonably priced and open til 3 or 4 am in Carbondale cant go wrong Or in Chicago. There is a burrito place on every damn street in Lincoln Park, Wrigleyville, etc. It's funny...they don't have many burrito joints out here in Vegas...
  15. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 07:20 PM) lol, I have sigs turned off because my work computer just bogs down when I go to Soxtalk on my breaks. So no I didnt Hah....his sig is the exact same picture you posted...
  16. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 07:08 PM) I don't understand why this matters. I made a case for why I think it should be a certain way, not trying to convince Ozzie or Kenny to do it that way. It was quite obvious that Torres would be pitching on Tuesday when they announced Jackson to pitch on Wednesday yesterday. Just because a decision has been made doesn't mean I can't question why. You seem to have a habit of running the fool's errand, my friend...
  17. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 07:14 PM) everytime I see that picture I think of the movie "So I married and Axe Murderer" when Mike Myers(as his father) starts ripping on the kid for having a huge head Kyle, I'm still not sure if you get it. Did you see the signature in the post you were responding to with your helmet link?
  18. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 07:11 PM) This kind Ok, I hope you totally space cadeted yourself on that one, Kyle...
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 06:46 PM) I believe benchwarmerjim said that Morneau had multiple concussions in HS hockey, as well as a concussion in the past 3 years in the majors. So he is getting close to Lindross Loopy territory. I saw the replay of the hit he took to the head on the slide, it really didnt look bad enough to knock him out for a month or longer When he comes back, I bet money he is wearing one of those space cadet helmets like David Wright wore Yeah, this is something personal and specific to Morneau. The collision was nothing. He's got a problem based on his specific history as a hockey player...
  20. QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 06:37 PM) Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd assume every team already has at least 1 spanish translator, considering how many non-english speaking latin players there are in the MLB. I thought Ozzie was talking more about the personal translators players like Fukudome have where they act almost as an assistant and go everywhere with them. He's talking about all teams, including minor league affiliates.
  21. QUOTE (scenario @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 05:51 PM) Huddy also hit a 2-run double. Good way to start off for a new team. Not to nitpick, but it was a single with an error on the throw home, which allowed him to advance to second. I think the other RBI must have come on a ground out or something.
  22. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 07:06 PM) I would rather have Buehrle or Jackson pitch on 4 days rest vs. Baltimore, than then Torres pitch vs. Detroit. Actually, Detroit's offense has been neutered since they lost Inge/Magglio/Guillen to injury. Outside of Cabrera, they are pretty impotent right now, especially since Boesch is hitting like .050 in his last 50 PAs. Seems to me like this could be the perfect spot to get away with a Torres start.
  23. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 07:07 PM) I don't think so. In fact, I can't even think of the last person to play in the majors the same year he was drafted. I think there have been a few relievers...Houston Street comes to mind...didn't Ryan Zimmerman come right up as well?
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 06:45 PM) Basically I didn't want to say that makes the Oswalt acquisition worthless this year, because you never know, he could go out and do a CC-with-the-Brewers type run and pitch them straight to the playoffs, but you know...that almost makes it all not matter. Well, it could really kill them, being that they'd be without Howard and Utley for a big chunk of August...talk about a terrible time for a guy to get injured.. We'll have to wait and see how serious it is.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 05:22 PM) Ryan Howard helped off with a sprained ankle...if he's out for a long time, that really hurts them. Ok Captain Obvious...
