  1. Honestly, I thought you were much smarter before you got the PhD, Balta...
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2009 -> 05:42 PM) Sweet...I can now officially appeal to myself as an authority in this thread. Cool. For some reason I am totally picturing you as Sheldon from The Big Bang theory now...
  3. QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 21, 2009 -> 05:33 PM) Meh the presence of Joe Scarborough hosting a show in the morning (nevermind who Mika's father is, she is easily convinced by whatever Joe says) and the fact that Pat Buchanan is taken seriously on that network already kind of throws a big dent in that. Of course MSNBC is biased overall, and is pretty unapologetic about it, but they aren't anywhere near as good at blatantly pushing an agenda and dominating the direction of a national argument as Fox is. If they really were trying to be the liberal Fox they would try harder. Ahh, I think Pat Buchanan is just one of those characters that everyone gets a kick out of, regardless of political affiliation...
  4. Tried to learn the guitar about 10 years ago...had a Fender Jag-Stang (a guitar Kurt Cobain designed with Fender), but could never play it for s***. My mom gave it to my cousin without me knowing, who has since gone on to play in many bands. So I guess I'm not too upset...at least the thing was getting played... I have a heck of a set of pipes on me though...
  5. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 21, 2009 -> 04:16 PM) Well, when you're a good hitter and spend 7 years hitting in the middle of the Yankees lineup you better put up big RBI numbers (especially when you don't miss a single game for 3 straight seasons.) Take 2003 for example; he hit 5th and 6th that year behind such players as Jason Giambi (.412 OBP), Derek Jeter (.393), Nick Johnson (.422) and Bernie Williams (.367) or 2009 behind Damon (.365), Teixeira (.383) and Rodriguez (.402). Kal, I know you're just guessing like the rest of us, but what kind of deal do you see Matsui looking for? My guess is his agent will use Abreu's contract as a starting point (2/$19) and would reasonable accept 2/$15m...
  6. I'm loving the s*** out of these write-ups. I find the drama of these bands, especially those that were formed back in the 60's and 70's, incredibly fascinating. Thanks so much for doing this, Jeremy.
  7. I like the Ohio State uni's Matt Millen is getting a lot of work these days...
  8. QUOTE (b-Rye @ Nov 21, 2009 -> 11:48 AM) Omar is past his prime for sure (like the alomars, griffey jr when kenny acquired them) but I think it's a good move. The Sox needed a utility infielder that could play some good defense (Nix can't, didn't he make 10 errors in a month last year??)... Nix is outstanding defensively at 2b. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case at ss or 3b
  9. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 21, 2009 -> 11:13 AM) This is my 5th year in Carbondale and I've still never had Paglaia's . Italian Village is absolutely delicious and you're right about Wise Guys, absolutely great when you're hammered but f***in gross when you're sober. Isn't Paglaia's expensive? I seem to remember it being out of my price range when I was a starving student...
  10. QUOTE (scenario @ Nov 21, 2009 -> 11:18 AM) Don't know. He sure looked good in the AFL... Apparently, Gary Ward helped him make a few adjustments that obviously brought some nice results. But I think we'll have to see him over a larger sample size of at-bats. Next year at Birmingham will be very telling. I expect Viciedo will spend the year as Charlotte's 3B, so it's likely that Morel will spend 2010 with the Barons and 2011 in Charlotte before he gets a shot at MLB in 2012. That's assuming of course that Kenny doesn't get an itch and deal one of them before then. Thanks buddy. Personally, I have very little faith in Viciedo ever playing 3b for us. Given that Teahan has 2 years of service time remaining, I guess we could possibly see Morel as the 2012 OD starter. I'll be excited to follow his progress in BHam this year.
  11. I would just say to everyone graduating and looking to start their careers, the key is to remain flexible in your career choices. You never know where your career will take you, so just remain as open minded as possible.
  12. QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Nov 21, 2009 -> 09:09 AM) There's speculation Matsui would play in Japan if he doesn't get a multi-year offer to his liking out here. That makes sense because he's accomplished a lot out here and made a ton of money doing so. I thought I read that he said he would not be returning to Japan... My guess is he ends up in Seattle.
  13. Patrick, how far away do you think Morel really is? I have never really looked into this kid until now...could he be our starting 3b as early as next season? Edit: I mean the 2011 season.
  14. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 21, 2009 -> 10:32 AM) Of all of the other pizza places in Carbondale, my order of top 4 would be Quatros, Paglaia's, Italian Village, and then Wise Guys. Wise guys had the awesome 20 inch pizza, but when you are s***-hammered drunk that pizza just isnt as good as you thought it was. Other places I absolutely loved were the Bubble Tea place, Don Taco, and El Greco. I never had Wise Guy's pizza....only had their sandwiches...I used to go and get 2-3 at a time... Dammit Kyle, now I am starving for Quattro's and it's only 730 am here...and Carbondale is not particularly close to Las Vegas, NV.
  15. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 21, 2009 -> 10:01 AM) I dunno guys, I still miss Quatros. and I worked there, you would think I would never want it again. Lou's just doesnt do it for me, nor to Giordianos, or Ginos. Every other "chicago" food I love(hotdogs, Italian beef, etc), but deep dish is just "meh" for me. Oh man, Quattros.....I love the deep dish stuff you mentioned you don't care for, but Quattros will always have a special place in my heart. I can't really describe why, but they do for the pan pizza what Pizza Hut could never imagine... And as long as we are talking about Carbondale food classics, I could go for some Wise Guys as well...
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 07:40 PM) Christ, Alice in Chains beat both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden? I was never a big fan of Alice in Chains, but their Unplugged album is amongst the best of any to come out of that series.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 21, 2009 -> 07:38 AM) LOL I actually still can't tell for sure if this is parody, a la The Onion, or if this writer is for real. I mean, the article starts with his profile: And his first sentence isn't even grammatically correct: Along with a number of other misspellings and grammatical errors. And if you follow his link to the "source", this is their description of what happened: Um... what? I looked around for this story on any legitimate news sites, and found nothing. At least, not yet. Hah, this has to be satire...
  18. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 07:30 AM) Guzan's pretty unlucky that he's stuck behind Brad Friedel at Aston Villa ATM, some Villa fans actually think he is the better goalkeeper, but Friedel's probably been a top 5 keeper in the EPL over the past 5-6 seasons, even though he's about 40 now. If you can go, especially with the chance to get some close access to the US team, by all means I'd recommend it. Yeah, he is unlucky, but his time will come. He got a start a few weeks ago and saved 4 pk's....got a lot of good press out of that.
  19. QUOTE (Cali @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 07:23 PM) I dont get the Green Day hate. They were the first band I ever got in to. Yeah they stumbled a bit to try and find a way to top Dookie, but that led them to completely re-invent themselves 10 years later and release one of the best albums of the decade and one of the most important albums to me personally in American Idiot. They are also such an amazing live band, so f***ing tight musically. People fear change and experimentation from your favorite band is like a curse word, but I love it, and I will follow most bands no matter what the sound is. Yeah, I agree. Dookie was an absolutely amazing album, whether you like the band or not. And they did stumble a bit for a while, but I think they have legitimized themselves by reinventing themselves so successfully. Honestly, for a 3 man punk band, if they weren't pretty damn brilliant, would they still be relevant? I don't think so...
  20. My best friend coached Brad Guzan in high school and remains good friends with him. It looks like Guzan will be the backup in goal for the 2010 WC and possibly take over for the 2014 WC. My friend and I have thought about going (well he wants to go really badly and is trying to get me to go along), especially since we would probably be able to have some kind of exposure to the team and Brad, but I'm just not sure if I can swing it or not. Has anyone here been to one before? Is it crazy?
  21. QUOTE (Punch and Judy Garland @ Dec 20, 2005 -> 03:30 PM) <!--QuoteBegin-Chisoxfn+Dec 20, 2005 -> 02:06 PM-->QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 20, 2005 -> 02:06 PM) <!--QuoteEBegin-->Eaton at this stage of the game (when healthy) is a better pitcher than Young, imo. However, long term Young will probably be the better of the two. Otsuka was a stud in the pen. I like this trade a lot more for the Rangers. Their pen could be pretty solid next year and it wasn't this year. Another puzzling move to me by Kevin Towers who I always liked Puzzling move by Towers...
  22. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 07:00 PM) I know this is a message board. But is it really necessary to start a thread about every White Sox "rumor", no matter how ridiculous, that pops up on the net or in the papers? Well, we can put it in a catch-all thread, but honestly, what else is there to discuss? Does the possibility of signing Henry Blanco as our backup catcher REALLY get your blood pumping?
  23. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 06:46 PM) Then as Jenks was starting to go back down to the bench after throwing in the pen, my buddy and I yell out a joke to him. I figured he was ignoring us, but as soon as we said the punchline he looked up at us and starting laughing. My whole section enjoyed the joke and were shocked that Jenks acknowledged us and laughed at the joke. So what was the joke?
  24. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 06:51 PM) Rosenthal scoffs at SoxNet's story so that he can pull this gem of a rumor out of his backside... To be fair, I don't think Rosenthal mentioned anything about the AGon-Konerko thingy. If they want to offer the guy in Tony's avatar, I might be willing to listen...
