QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 2, 2015 -> 04:06 PM) If anyone else is watching The Leftovers still, that was one of the most bizarre episodes I have ever seen. Almost 24 hours later, I still have no idea what to make of it. I am. It was great. I didn't understand the repent stuff at first, but this explanation makes sense:

Didn't DV and Yoda have the ability to sense the Force in others? To me that just proves how GL couldn't have pulled this off. He already broke a canon rule of how Jedi's work if no one could have sensed Jar Jar or Palpatine. His whole argument rests on the idea that there's no luck in the Star Wars world based on what someone in the movies said once. If we can ignore certain rules, why not ignore that there's no luck?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 2, 2015 -> 04:23 PM) Did you read the whole thing and how it aligns fairly well with other sci-fi? It seems to be more than a coincidence I did. It requires a ton of nuance and subtelty to plan for that, two things GL SUCKS at. Also, don't Jedi's sense other people, especially evil people, with the Force? Wouldn't they have sensed that with Jar Jar at many, many points along the road?

I have a really hard time believing that George Lucas is clever enough to do that.

It's sad that I almost miss Trestman. At least they moved the ball. 4-5 WR screens already, probably -2 yards gained. So let's keep trying it! Fox is pathetic.

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 30, 2015 -> 01:22 PM) Honestly Grantlands biggest accomplishment is that I could actually name almost all of their writers and would read an article by them. Did an amazing job at promoting their talent. Very true. Credit Simmons. He put a heck of a staff together there.

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 30, 2015 -> 01:17 PM) Same and add Greenwald, Morris and Katie Baker when she actually wrote about hockey. I could do without Greenwald and Chris Ryan. They acted/talked like they were above everyone else. Too douchey.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 30, 2015 -> 01:05 PM) Grantland is ovah. http://espnmediazone.com/us/espn-statement...ding-grantland/ Dunno about you guys, but that was on my daily list of websites to go to, usually multiple times in the day. Love Barnwell/Mays, love Zach Lowe, love Jalen/Jacoby (though that'll probably continue since they're on the radio). ESPN looks so terrible with all this.

QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 30, 2015 -> 11:34 AM) on what you wrote including the bold, it still takes the act of congress to approve the move. also congress will need to overcome the president ... but that will need a % of vote to do that. I think the last 15 years has shown that's pretty debatable. An all out war? Yes. Military action generally? No.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 30, 2015 -> 09:13 AM) Most most of the Supreme Court basically has lifetime tenure. The bottom 1/3rd or 25% of presidents don't compare to Earl Warren or Oliver Wendell Holmes. They're pretty influential, no doubt about that, but again you're talking one of nine. To be really influential you have to have the backing over others. The president can make unilateral decisions.

QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 29, 2015 -> 09:02 PM) and while you ae bringing up some nice info, the president does not dictate policy... he recommends it and congress passes on it.. yeah the president can veto it and then it goes back to congress. check and balance process. but the main point is, the person who is president does not need to know everything b/c they will not know it. the president have people to will brief the president on anything and everything..... letting him to become the best inform person on that subject. as i said it is virtually impossible to know all things and how it will affect the county. now the president may have some pet subject that the president may want to take priority .... that is another subject. now going back to the org statement that started all this. the gambling question or was it the fantasy football question was a bad one. IMHO Poll 100 people right now who their state senators and house reps are and i'm guessing 60-70% wouldn't be right. Poll the same people who the President is and i'm sure it's 95%. The President is the man face of the US government these days. He can sway popular opinion (to the extent it can be) more than any other person.

QUOTE (LDF @ Oct 29, 2015 -> 08:54 PM) i am with you on most, except for this post. do you really think the president has more power???? i think it is the opposite and congress, if united can lock down the government. Yes, absolutely. You have one person versus hundreds that require a shutdown. And he has the power to tell all of his agencies to stop providing services, stop enforcing laws, stop investigating crimes, stop prosecuting cases, etc. etc. Oh and he commands the entire US defense system. Congress can cut funding, so in an indirect way they can do the same in theory, but it's much harder to do.

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Oct 29, 2015 -> 04:25 PM) He is LITERALLY one-third of the branches of the federal government. If I'm remembering my civics right, that means that this one guy has always had the power to veto legislation passed by the majority of 535 people in the chamber below him. At what point in our nation's history did the Office of the Presidency NOT dictate policy at every level of the federal government? I'm not suggesting that the President NEVER had any power. Obviously he did/does, it's right there in the Constitution. However, the executive has grown immensely over the years. War time powers, executive privilege, decisions on when to enforce or when not to enforce laws, etc. And my main gripe is really the last 25 years or so with the rise in cable news. Every decision seems to begin and end with a speech by the President. edit: I had read most of this years ago. http://www.amazon.com/Presidential-Power-U...n/dp/0393064883 I think the authors would probably agree basically nothing has changed in the last 7-8 years. edit 2: and when I said the President doesn't do anything to effectuate change, I mean on big issues they campaign over. Like when there are promises about the economy or poverty or crime or whatever. That's all just bulls***. They basically luck into or out of it.

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Oct 29, 2015 -> 03:59 PM) You're right. It's totally not important to know the policy positions of Presidential candidates on relevant topics in Washington... He's one guy who wields veto power over everything that comes through the legislature. He's one guy who dictates all policy in the executive branch. He's a pretty damn important guy.... Again - this is a multi-billion dollar industry that the government attempt to shut down. The executive can certainly clear some of the regulatory uncertainty surrounding that industry... He doesn't HAVE to be though. We just keep making that position more and more important. Like he has to be the one championing X legislation before it can be done.
