QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 9, 2013 -> 03:26 PM) One factor in some of those awards is has it happened before and what has been done to correct it. Courts see a series of $50,000 settlements and nothing being done to change the situation will jack up the award to fulfill the idea that the award should be punitive to change the behavior. In most instances a jury will never know about those prior settlements. It could be that whoever the doctor was totally messed up and then did something to deserve punitive damages on top of it. It could be a guy that was highly skilled and worth quite a bit had to change careers. Maybe it was an infection to a bad part of the body (eyes, sexual organs, etc) that made it worth. Lots and lots of variables, but as SB said, as a general rule, to get a lot of money, you gotta be really screwed up. The multi-multi-multi million dollar settlements are usually horrific accidents/events that leave people with lifelong disabilities and expenses.

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 9, 2013 -> 12:51 PM) Giving away what they sell? Tasting rooms aren't free. Most of the breweries i've been to have been. It's normally a tour and a beer or a flight of beer for free. And then you can stick around and drink like you're at a bar.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 9, 2013 -> 11:44 AM) We had a garage sale a few years ago. Advertised on Craigslist. I had a bunch of Star Wars figures from Episode 1 that were unopened. We advertised that on Craigslist among other things. It was like 15 total figures, Darth Maul and s***. Complete garbage. Had about 10 cars at our house hours before it started just for that garbage alone. Also, and this was a few years ago, we couldn't give away a 21" tube television. No one would take it. Yeah, I have 2 tube tv's and an old rear projection HDTV. I've been holding on to them thinking they have some kind of value, but I should just take them somewhere to be recycled. They're worthless at this point.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 8, 2013 -> 05:57 PM) It's amazing how much this old technology is welcomed like 20 years later. I was just talking to my dad about this a couple days ago, how we wish we still had the ability to PiP our shows on the TV. We were flipping back and forth between the ND/ASU game and the Hawks/Lightning game. What I don't get is why TV's can't PIP 2 separate HDMI sources. It infuriates me. I'd love to be able to play Madden on my PS3 while watching a game.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Oct 9, 2013 -> 08:30 AM) That's true if it was only the very serious cases. How about a 2 million dollar settlement when a person got an infection (not necessarily the physician's fault) because the patient was delayed in returning to work for 4 weeks? These are the cases to which I'm referring. If you screw up you screw up and there should be penalties. If it's a 2 million dollar settlement, someone screwed up somewhere and the damages were drastic. Insurance companies don't throw away large sums of money like that. Do you have a link to this story?

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 8, 2013 -> 09:04 PM) My brothers and I used Napster briefly, and then KaZaa, and we'd each take turns downloading like 10-15 songs at a time, which took like 35-40 minutes a song. Movies had download overnight. My freshman year in 2000 my school had just installed a bunch of T1 lines. They were ungodly fast because no one was using it. I could download a song in 15-20 seconds. A movie in a matter of minutes. It was amazing. One of the frat guys got in trouble with Universal or some other big hollywood study because he was one of the biggest sources for uploading movies in the country. Then they really cranked up the bandwidth controls. It was a sad day.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Oct 8, 2013 -> 08:32 PM) Minor yet major correction here, as nobody has ever been successfully sued for just downloading anything. Where they get you is for uploading/sharing, which is usually what makes Torrents so dangerous, as most force you to share, even a small part of the download. Any piece you've uploaded makes you accountable for the whole. Simply downloading something that's out there on the Internet would be a VERY hard case to press on anyone in a court of law...which is why nobody bothers. All the big cases are brought up against uploading. But, the rest of what you said is true. As for Apple purchases, again, easy to mass convert and strip DRM out of them. Very easy. Can be done with music and movies...you may have to pay a small price for the programs that do it, but it's a one time expense to rid yourself of Apple/iTunes if you so desire. This is where I disagree. I'm pretty tech/computer savvy, and while I can do this, it's still a pain in the ass. It's not an easy process like it should be. And Apple knows that 95% of people who try will think "meh, not worth the effort." When I moved from the Iphone 3gs to an Android, I vowed to never purchase another Apple product because I did not want to get stuck in that world again. That and I like Android about 1000 times more. The app store is the only real benefit to owning an Iphone IMO.

I've had the Genie system for a few days now and wow is it cool. No more being stuck watching some crap my wife tapes because we had 2 shows on at the same time. Also, I'm a huge fan of the PIP with 2 channels. Now I can flip from the game to something else and always know when the game comes back from commercial.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 8, 2013 -> 02:56 PM) Downloading and loading MP3's onto one of those or even something like winamp took a decent amount of tech savy. Itunes/ipod changed the entire game on that. Great link to show what this thing was and the screens. I forgot it took 8 batteries. http://www.thg.ru/mobile/20001110/print.html I had a Creative mp3 player and it was a drag and drop system - download music off napster, drag the file to the Creative folder and drop. Very easy. Itunes was the game changer. No other competitor had a ready made store to get music - individual songs especially - for cheap. All at a time when the whole Napster thing was dying and people were getting sued for ungodly amounts of money for downloading music. Plus, they brilliantly made it difficult (and impossible for a while) to transfer your purchases, so if you spent enough money you were "stuck" with Apple products. Some continue to be that way because it's not worth the hassle of trying to get your content onto another device.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 8, 2013 -> 02:19 PM) Well he sort of needs to do those things to provide you with valuable teachings. This is akin to saying I just want to pay for the ingredients in my actual dinner or my actual drink when you go out to eat. Life doesn't work that way... Education shouldn't be a for-profit game though, especially if it's being paid with government funds.

I'm the opposite for some reason, and maybe it's just my phone sucks (original Droid Razr) and/or I have fat fingers. I'm CONSTANTLY hitting the key to the left or right of they key I'm intending to hit. I probably write three lines of text for each one i'm trying to send.

What's the real harm here? Both parties have insanely rich donors. Both parties have already rigged the system enough so that no 3rd party could ever legitimately make a run (and really such a change could, in theory, actually be beneficial in that regard). You're not going to be some low level politician rising through the ranks without needing some serious financial support from the party, so it's not like the pool of candidates will change. What's the difference if there's no longer a cap?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 04:59 PM) IWU had an awesome basketball program back in the day. When I was in school at Manchester, we ran into you guys a couple of times in the tourney. They still do really. They were in the final 4 during my time there (early 2000's) and had won a championship a few years prior to that. I think they were back in the final four last year or the year before, and I got an email saying they were #3 in the country this preseason. The games are glorified high school games (or for many, probably equal to high school games) but they were still fun to watch.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 09:40 PM) The evidence is that the greatest cost of practicing medicine is the malpractice insurance. This is why many physicians are getting into group practice to share expenses and cut costs. The cost needs to come down and the cost of medicine will come down. Experience does count for something. It may be lower on evidence based theory but it does count. When you have the power to kill someone or seriously injure them for life because of your mistake, you better have adequate insurance coverage. And if malpractice is a real problem in this country, taking away the economic penalty for being s***ty at your job won't help that problem. Doctors will get even more negligent/careless.
