  1. I'm pumped for this weekend, but I know that generally college football is terrible for at least another month. Illinois plays a bunch of nobodies until conference play.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 04:49 PM) Ill probably stick with litigation, but I dont know. Ive never really looked around or even explored options. I just always had a job or school, so I always just went with the flow. I could probably stay here forever, but if I dont look around now, I probably never will. Forgot to respond to this last week - I'm in the same boat. I enjoy some aspects of litigation, but not all of it. My law school curriculum was geared towards becoming an in-house counsel for a big company. But that didn't work out and litigation was the only job I could get. I'm worried that at this point, 4 years in, i'm stuck unless I head into solo practice.
  3. I think i'm finally going to give in and buy a tablet. Looking at the Asus Infinity. Seems to be the best Android tablet there according to the major review sites. Anyone have one by chance?

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 03:16 PM) I think Im going to start looking for a new job. Ive never looked for a job before so its going to be odd. Ive just been at the same place for a long time, and maybe its time for change. Sticking with the same practice or moving out of law entirely?

Since this has been more of a general job/career thread than just a "job hunt" thread, i'll add my good news: I settled my first major case a couple months ago and it all got wrapped up this week. $975k on a million dollar policy for the death of a subcontractor on a construction site. He left a minor daughter but no other heirs. Wasn't expecting my firm to give me anything out of it, but I ended up getting a decent bonus and a ~15% raise. Pretty stoked as I was really starting to get worried about paying for daycare for my new kid. Would have been REALLY nice if I had referred the case to the firm, but still a nice surprise.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 10:43 AM) But that point is wrong. The Internet remains an excellent example of beneficial government spending and the symbiotic relationship between public and private. I'm not disagreeing with you, but i'm telling you why Obama's statement, while technically true, is idiotic and disingenuous. He could not stand behind his podium and tell Google or Amazon or Facebook that they didn't build their businesses on their own, that the government did it for them. That's bulls***. They gave them a venue to work in, but they did nothing to make those companies what they are today. And yes, I agree that his statement was taken out of context, a little. But add that to the personal responsibility comment he made a while back and it's not really a stretch to think that he truly does believe that government is the great almighty provider.
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 10:35 AM) Jenks said that the government had nothing to do with 99% of it, which is plainly wrong. And academia is mostly government or government-funded anyway. Yes, please hold me to my made up 99% figure. The point is the vast majority of the internet has nothing to do with the government. The government created the skeleton at most, but everything since is private innovation.
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 10:33 AM) Michael Hiltzik: Who Invented The Internet? There's a bunch more where that came from if you want me to dig them up. There was a deluge after that terrible WSJ editorial referenced in the article. Yeah, his last line is my point. What the internet is today has nothing to do with what the government created in the beginning. So to come back later and tell Google or Amazon that they didn't build the internet because in reality the government started it is completely disingenuous. and it's worse in the example of real businesses when you're talking about education and roads and whatnot because those businesses actually contribute to those services. The internet, or at least the skeleton of the internet and WWW was provided to private business.
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 10:23 AM) Millions of people do not have reliable access to healthcare for anything but acute illnesses. We do not have UHC under any reasonable definition of the word. Free clinics are not widely and regularly available and cannot treat all illnesses, especially long-term or chronic illness that requires regular medication and/or therapy. 100% bulls***.
  10. Also to add onto what Alpha Dog brought up a few pages ago, with my kid that I recently had, "we" (my insurance company and I) paid out the ass for her doctor. Every visit was a $450 charge - $150 for the doctor, $300 for the ultrasound machine. Multiply that by about 12 visits prior to delivery and i'd say she spent a TOTAL of an hour meeting with my wife (generous). An hour of talk and a quick scan for $5,400 bucks. That's insane. What really cracks me up though is that people don't understand that we already have a universal healthcare system. It's just done indirectly. That money i pay to the doctor goes straight to the hospital (in this case Rush), who then turns around and uses their cut to fund their public clinics and programs. That happens at the majority of hospitals.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 10:01 AM) You're free to disagree, but it means something. Your statement did not. Al Gore never claimed he invented the internet, that's something conservatives invented and the media uncritically repeated. and actually, the internet is a great example of government-funded R&D that leads to massive economic expansion. So it only makes Obama's point, which is that government plays a critical role in the economy. Always has, always will. The problem with his statement was that he ignored 99% of what creates a business and praised the 1% society provides (teachers/roads/etc) all while ignoring that the business owner still pays for that 1%, so it's not like some free service he/she got. The internet is a good example. The government created the "internet" as part of the military, then academia took it over and then capitalism took over. The government has little involvement in 99% of why the internet is what it is.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 06:15 AM) Took a chance on Copper on BBCA. Pretty damn good show. I've got that taped. A lot of the reviews said it was an average premiere but the show had promise. Hell on Wheels didn't really get much better through the first 2 episodes. Still an OK watch. Great music, great cinematography, meh writing and meh characters. I think it tries to be a little more serious that it comes off. And Common, as much as I like his music, just cannot act.
  13. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 22, 2012 -> 10:15 AM) I still think health insurance should cover everything including eyes and teeth. It's just another part of your body so it would be like seeing another specialist such as a podiatrist or urologist. I never understood why they were separated. It's not like your eyesight is some elective medical issue.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 21, 2012 -> 04:04 PM) Yeah. I wouldn't call them a cartel though. Drug ring or competition sounds better. I thought Mike referred to them as the "cartel guys" but maybe I misheard. Either way...THOSE guys.

QUOTE (SnB @ Aug 21, 2012 -> 12:19 PM) The opening scene of this season showed him doing the bacon thing for his birthday by himself instead of with his family. There's no way the show ends well. Yeah my prediction is that he has to kill Hank and his family gets killed by the cartel. Losing his whole family would be a nice full-circle from the intentions he started with at the beginning.
  16. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 21, 2012 -> 09:30 AM) http://reason.com/archives/2012/08/20/the-...ly-must-not-win Ha, perfect.

  19. QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Aug 17, 2012 -> 06:39 AM) Basically, he got into IU because Crean went to bat for him (like he did Wade and Creek in the past). He had to score a "C" or above in his two summer school classes to continue his education at IU. Coming from an extremely rough background, it was a great story he's even made it this far. He ended up getting a 2.0 and was denied admission a little while back. He appealed and went in front of an academic committee board where they made the final decision. If this was a scholarship issue, Crean and the rest of Indiana would be getting the crap sued out of them from everywhere. Ron's statement to the press pretty much says it all, he feels terrible. I think those that are saying this is a scholarship issue are going to look quite dumb when/if Indiana ends up with 12 scholarship players for the year, which is looking like a distinct possibility right now. I just don't get this mentality. Getting a "C" basically means that he needed to show up for class and pay attention for more than 5-10 minutes. If he was a decent enough student to get into IU, getting C's shouldn't be that difficult. It's not like he's taking AP classes.
  20. QUOTE (Reddy @ Aug 16, 2012 -> 09:04 AM) FTW not remembering a saying =/= not knowing the century you live in.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 15, 2012 -> 04:52 PM) I thoroughly enjoy falling skies. Has anyone seen this showtime show that they are running a marathon about this weekend? I have a free preview so was going to see if it is any good. Its something about private military operatives hunting terrorists. Is that a joke? That show is Homeland. It is amazing. A must watch.
  22. It's a joke about a prior Obama ad placing the responsibility of someone's death on him.
  23. http://gawker.com/5935037/anti+gay-activis...os-protest-dies Mitt Romney is responsible: 1) He's conservative and a supporter of CFA 2) CFA attempted to get a permit but was denied because they hate gay people 3) Gay activist guy protested in retaliation 4) Now he's dead. When need an Obama ad to save the next victim of murderous Romney.
  24. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 15, 2012 -> 02:57 PM) No, the problem is lack of competition. EA makes such a fantastic NHL franchise, and 2K (I'm told) makes such a great NBA franchise, and it's likely because of the competition. TECHNICALLY SCEA has MLB competition, but that's debatable. Even when the 2k series was doing the NFL it's not like Madden progressed all that much. Every year they update rosters and try to add one gimmick that sounds great and then sucks terribly (hello, passing cone). Every other year they update animations and voice overs. Rinse and repeat for 27 years. I mean, I love me some Madden as much as the next guy, I just buy it once every 4-5 years and I have yet to miss out on anything major.
  25. You guys are the problem. If EA stopped making so much on that crap game they might actually try to do something a little different. But instead you're paying $60 bucks for minor tweaks and updated rosters.
