  1. QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 8, 2012 -> 10:24 AM) Ain't that the truth. There was a cartoon that zoomed through our school a couple weeks ago. Basically it showed parents in 1970, holding a report card and yelling at their child "these grades are too low". The next panel was in 2012 with the same parents yelling "these grades are too low" to the teacher. About 5 to 10% of my kids just do not care about school. They do not turn in assignments that we do in class, forget about homework, abuse school equipment, talk constantly in class, etc. Keep in mind we provide free tuition, books, and supplies *and* feed them breakfast and lunch. I need to have 90%+ of my students to pass the state assessments. On those rare occasions when a parent will answer the phone when the school is calling, they will blame the teacher for their child's attitude and behavior. We don't like their kid, we pick on them, other kids are also talking, our class is boring, etc etc. It is almost never the child's fault. I won't even mention the inappropriate clothes they wear to a parent teacher conference. That tells me they either do not own any clothes without plunging necklines and too short shorts or do not understand a learning environment. I don't care if they are new or old, etc. Just put on something that doesn't look like you are going out to a club to hook up with someone. In fairness I also have 5 - 10% of the parents who monitor their child's grades, call us if they see something they are concerned about, call us to schedule and appointment. These are the kids who are usually A-B students. So the more I think about it, a campaign to get common sense back into the schools would help everyone. Just fits with the overwhelming push away from self responsibility to an "it's everyone else's fault but mine" mentality that this country has. Criminals are criminals because they grow up in s***ty neighborhoods and therefore can't comprehend right from wrong. Single parents with no money are unfortunate victims of being teenagers with natural urges. Being overweight and unhealthy is due to fast food being available, not the fact that people lack self control and refuse to exercise. People are poor because of X, Y, Z, not at all because of their choices in life. We've had a few generations in a row now where societal leaders are telling people that they're not getting enough from society/the government so they should demand more. "Of course my kid doesn't want to learn. It's your job to make them!"
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 02:03 PM) Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughan, and Jonah Hill summer movie titled "Neighborhood watch" now in serious jeopardy. Such an overreaction. I can't blame them, but that's pretty sad.
  3. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 12:14 PM) The Bulls defense was legit last night. They held the Knicks to horrendous shooting during the 3rd and 4th quarters and even the 2nd quarter fg% was low. The only reason they won that game was because of the Bulls turnovers (which is why the Knicks jumped out to that 21 point lead and why they had the fg% they did) and the fact that they couldn't make free throws. Just feels like recently they've been a step slow to start games. OKC, Houston and again Sunday. Even against Boston they weren't very sharp to start. Yesterday was more of the same, especially the first quarter. And if JR Smith could hit the broad side of a barn the Bulls lose that game by 10-15.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 11:43 AM) Derrick was clearly better than CJ/JL3 already in the 2nd half last night. There were just plays/mistakes that he usually makes that he couldn't make last night. He got pickpocketed while driving the lane about half a dozen times it seemed like, and there were several times when he was close to the rim, put up a floater, and missed it, where I'm so used to seeing him make that shot that it was hard to believe he missed it. He also had 2-3 lead passes that were way off. That stuff comes back though once you get acclimated to the speed of the game. I thought the first and second half were night and day in terms of his play. Not to dwell on that game Sunday, but I am a little concerned that the last week or so the Bulls have played pretty terribly on the defensive end. Hopefully it's not fatigue, because the "real" season hasn't even begun yet. They're able to mount comebacks because their 2nd unit almost always dominates the other teams' second unit, but that becomes less of an advantage in the playoffs, and specifically with the Heat since 99% of the time either Lebron or Wade are on the floor.

Wasn't there just some awful story about a dog being killed by another dog at a dog park (montrose beach i believe)? When we lived in the city we took our boston to a dog park but kept her on the leash the majority of the time. Within 10 minutes I saw how many dumb owners there are out there. Most are there to meet girls and/or to socialize with other owners, so they completely ignored the fact that their dog was being an asshole and/or rolling in s*** and getting it on every other dog. That 10-15 min was plenty for me. Walking your dog in the city, in pretty much any neighborhood, is plenty of socialization. Especially if you walk him/her between 5-7 when owners are getting home and taking their dogs on their evening walks. Not discouraging dog parks. I'm sure they can (and are) great for some. But I just had a bad experience so we never went back.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 09:59 AM) Is she fully vaccinated yet? My guess is no, since she is only 8 weeks old. Have you gotten her into the vet yet? If she's not fully vaccinated yet, I'd take her for walks, but just not the most common routes where people walk their dogs. You don't want her to pick up Parvo or something. Another option is to put her in your backpack or a duffel bag and walk around the City so she can get accustomed to the sights and sounds. This will protect her from picking anything up before she is vaccinated. Did you do research on the Shichon? Shichon.net Sounds like you might have an uphill battle ahead of you... My sister has two of these dogs but they don't appear to be as clingy as IK's. They're about 1 or 1.5 now. I do know they still have major issues with potty training, to the point that they've decided to split them up in hopes they can give each more individual attention IK, do you put a blanket over the crate? Or somehow make it more of a cave instead of a cage? Sometimes that can help, if they feel more protected. Otherwise I think you're just gonna have to deal with it for a few years until all the puppy is out of him/her.
  7. Bulls playing like crap......again.
  8. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 5, 2012 -> 05:20 PM) jenks ideal version of football: Pretty much.
  9. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 5, 2012 -> 05:03 PM) The line is the intent to injure, remove from the game. The NFL wants hard hits, violence is part of the game. What Gregg Williams wants and is asking for are blown out ACLs, concussions, intentional injury. There is a reason that this game has changed so much to where the QB is basically untouchable and hits below the knee and at the head are outlawed, chopblocks are illegal, the kickoff spot is moved up, etc. The NFL doesn't want this generation of players to be coming after them 20 years from now because half of them suffer from dementia, and the other half are cripples. It may seem somewhat hypocritical of the nfl, but trying to hurt someone by putting a bounty on a previously injured player cannot happen when they are trying to reduce the injuries these players are suffering on a yearly basis Right, there are already rules in place, so why the faux reaction? Williams went too far. But it's not some game-changing or earth-shattering secret that guys have always wanted to take other guys out. So long as it's within the rules and not cheap, illegal plays, it's just part of the sport IMO. I just don't see the justification for giving the guy the death penalty for something that's not that far removed from what everyone acknowledges is a league-wide practice.
  10. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 5, 2012 -> 05:02 PM) I don't want to see players intentionally trying to injure each other, no. The long-term risks of concussions certainly were not well-known in previous decades and they really aren't pretty. It is, after all, just a game, and I do not want to see others intentionally debilitated, possibly for life, for my entertainment. It's also important to note that the NFL owners are also assholes making bazillions of dollars but do not face the serious physical risks that the players do. The NFLPA is fighting for long-term care of the players who suffer life-long injuries while making the owners very wealthy. There's very little difference between jacking someone up seriously and trying to hurt them. We're not talking about taking out someones knees or whatever - dirty plays that already have rules in place to guard against that type of outcome. I mean, i'm in agreement that there shouldn't be a financial benefit for INTENTIONAL injury, but who gives a flying crap if Ray Lewis demolishes a WR coming over the middle and he gets an extra 5k bonus? Again, everyone signs up for this knowing full well the ramifications of playing a violent sport. Basically this is going to get to a point where players are going to be paid millions for life. And we the fans get to pay for it.
  11. Can someone explain to me why the hell fans care if these guys are trying to kill each other? I certainly don't. These assholes are getting paid bazillions of dollars (plus a pension) to play a violent game. Am I supposed to feel sorry for them? I don't get the faux outrage and I especially don't get the faux reaction from the NFL. If I were Goodell I'd be like, "look, it's a violent game, i'm not going to belittle our fans who basically could care less if these guys are injured (unless it screws up their chances at a championship, but even then it's not like we're upset that someone got seriously injured...that s*** happens every week). So, yeah it was a little unprofessional, and maybe Williams took it a LITTLE too far. But the death penalty? No, not even close." Simmons has this article where he's pleading for someone to draw the "line" to let him know what should be acceptable and what should not be acceptable. I say don't have a line. No holds bar (within the rules obviously). I have the same opinion about the sudden seriousness of concussions. You get what you pay for. These guys aren't dumb. They know it's a violent sport and it comes with risks. Hell, the first day of football for any kid in this country is a video about becoming paralyzed.
  12. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 5, 2012 -> 10:36 AM) The laws are meant to restrict everyone not just criminals. Gun control isnt just about criminals, its about kids who get their hands on their parents guns and shoot themselves accidentally, its about untrained civilians using weapons on the street and harming another innocent, its about whether as a society guns are necessary to protect ourselves from common criminals. Some of us have a fundamental difference of opinion on guns and society. I do not read the 2nd Amendment the same way it is currently interpreted, but, that does not change my core belief. Guns aren't strictly about protection from criminals.
  13. I'm sure SS will have issue with this, but nonetheless here's a study establishing a point i've made before about crime being an issue with public housing residents: http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2012/04/05/rep...-cha-residents/
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 5, 2012 -> 08:21 AM) But no one is saying anything like this about, for example, the people who successfully pushed for expansion of Florida's gun laws. Those laws are insane, but people stopped paying attention to how insane it is to have people riding around in their trucks armed to the teeth starting fights (and dealing with the black suspicious looking people appropriately). I love how going to an extreme is terrible in one sense (oh look, a black kid, he must be suspicious) but perfectly fine in another (anyone who wants to own a gun is just "arming" themselves to pick fights and kill people). Yep.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 5, 2012 -> 09:20 AM) I remember watching last night Miami getting into their offense as LeBron was the last guy up the floor. He comes down the floor and runs over the Thunder player defending Chalmers to set a "screen", while the guy was standing still. The defender gets called for a foul and LeBron goes to the line for two. It was terrible. Up until those flagrant fouls the Thunder were the aggressors, so Miami got the benefit of the refs trying to get the game under control. Lebron was all over Durant defensively and he was only called once for it. It was a good game regardless. Wade and Bosh don't look very good though, Bosh especially. Wonder if he's hurt. Lebron, unfortunately, looked great.
  16. I liked Gasol's quote about it:
  17. Two flagrants in a row. Good for the Thunder.
  18. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 4, 2012 -> 05:54 PM) Saying Davis might play the 3 in the pros is an absolutely absurd comment. And he'll be closer to KG than to Marcus Camby. I said on occasion. Relax. This Thunder/Heat game is pretty good. This would be a good seven game series. Hopefully it doesnt come to that, but i'm not sure the Heat would be the overwhelming favorite. You can tell the Heat players are starting to get chippy with each other
  19. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 4, 2012 -> 05:06 PM) Davis cant play the 3, at all, I dont believe he played that position for 1 minute this season, I actually doubt he played the 4 more than a token amount either. Just for comparison, according to draft express, Noah was 7 ft, 223 when he entered the NBA. Draft express has Davis at 6'10, 214 Now onto the idea that Davis can be a 3: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Anthony-Davis-6236/ These comments are exactly what I have seen when Davis has played. The guy would really be a terrible 3, he has no jump shot, no driving ability and no isolation ability. He could possibly be a 4, but that would only be on a team that has no legitimate 5, because as of now, Davis could arguably be a top 10 C, just based on defense alone. The idea of 4 or 5, really doesnt mean anything, because it depends on the opposing team and situation. In my opinion he will always be a 5, regardless of what you want to call him. His greatest abilities are defensive post protection and will likely match up against the best 4/5 of the other team. Unless Davis dramatically improves his game, he is not a 3, Im not saying it wont happen, but as of now he has really done nothing to show he is a SF. He was asked to be the 5 in college and deferred to his teammates a lot offensively. I don't think that's very relevant in projecting what he'll be in the NBA. He's a natural 4, but depending on the team and the need he could play the three on occasion. You're completely forgetting that he was a point guard but for the last 2 years after he grew 6 inches in 11 months.
  20. QUOTE (farmteam @ Apr 4, 2012 -> 03:44 PM) That's his biggest asset right now, IMO. I don't think he'll get much better than he is now, but he can play right away and be productive. I see him going in the 8-12 range, depending on who all ends up declaring and what not. FWIW, if I didn't have major concerns about Leonard's demeanor and work ethic, I'd easily take him over Sullinger. One of the reasons he's losing hundreds of thousands, if not millions, by not coming back next year. If he were back for another season and put up the same numbers he did this year he'd be a top 5-10 pick. He's projected anywhere from 9 to 28 in the prediction stuff. Can't really fault the guy though for deciding to accept millions to play a game for a living.
  21. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 4, 2012 -> 01:28 PM) Steve, I disagree. Davis should be a Center, hes an athletic big man, just like Noah. He can dribble the ball, just like Noah. Davis jump shot may be slightly better than Noah, but in my opinion, its pretty overrated. He probably has a better vertical than Noah too. That being said, he could be a 4 on a team with a top 10 Center, I just cant imagine most teams having a better 5 on defense. Davis is going to be a 4 if not a 3 on occasion in the NBA. I don't see him being a 5 at all. He'll get killed guarding big guys who have about 50-75 lbs on him.
  22. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 4, 2012 -> 09:50 AM) You called that study a pile of s*** or something similar, don't rely on it now. I said it was a piece of s*** as to your point, because it showed that justices have been even more extreme in the past - the same point i'm making now.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 4, 2012 -> 09:30 AM) I'm sure this would have nothing to do with that. (Same article I just cited). And I think it was SS that cited a study a while back that showed the most "extreme" politically biased justices were the 1970's liberals. So what's your point? The pendulum is swinging the other way, as it always does.
  24. I also love that your source (a blog) uses the Kagan confirmation as proof of hyperpartisanship (i.e., those damn conservatives are ruining everything) in the Court. Again, as if this is something new. Go look at the wiki page for the Supreme Court and check out the confirmation voting for each current justice. Thomas and Alito had more difficult times getting confirmed than either of the two new "liberal" judges. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Court...e_United_States
