QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 1, 2012 -> 02:37 PM) And thats the thing about why I disagree with you here. Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man are all different movies in tone, subject matter and delivery. You telling me that they are cookie cutter movies tells me you either didnt watch them, or decided ahead of time that you hate them and wont bother to watch much to give them a chance. The entire Avengers story is an evolving story. Hopefully they can continue to push it towards the Civil war storyline, because if they can pull that one off I will be a very happy person. I admitted I have a bias towards these movies, so i'm sure that plays a part. But I did watch three of those four (no Captain America) and I just didn't see anything different about them. The way the movie was presented wasn't anything new or innovative, the acting wasn't anything to write home about, the scale seemed much smaller (i.e, the locations and filming at those locations), and I dunno, just seemed to me that these movies are just cash cows. IMO BB and TDK were more artistic. Yes, at their core they're still about a comic book hero with lots of explosions. But the entire feel was "this is bad ass." I'm sure if you were big into the Avengers as a kid this would be a great movie and the ones preceding it would be great. I just don't see it. To each his own.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 1, 2012 -> 02:23 PM) I also concur with Steve's statement. I'll give you "being healthy" is an important piece, but without Hamilton being at least a threat on the court the series is going to go the exact same way it did last year. Against the Heat you basically lose Boozer for the entire series, so you need someone else to step up on the offensive end.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 1, 2012 -> 02:25 PM) LOL no it is not. They are based on the Batman graphic novels. The only movie that stands alone is Batman Begins, but TDK is basically The Long Halloween, and lots of the trailers are making people think that TDKR is going to be a new take on Frank Millers "The Dark Knight" as well as Knightfall. But everything about how the movie is made - from the acting, the cinematography, the music/sound effects, etc - is not a cookie cutter production. It's breaking the mold and thinking outside the box. I'm not suggesting that it's the best movie ever, but for a comic book movie it definitely stands apart.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 1, 2012 -> 01:31 PM) I think that statement is slightly subjective. (With reference to Hamilton being the biggest key) Not when the question asked is "Why should you feel different about the Bulls this year than last spring"

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 1, 2012 -> 01:51 PM) I was one of the ones that thought that was only pretty good. As to your other statements, I agree. I just think that these recent comic book movies have been very good. Iron Man II wasn't very good and Captain America was average to me, but the rest I really enjoyed. I think inherently I dislike them too because they're the least creative movies made. They're based heavily on a source material that people already like. It's Hollywood being lazy, especially when they make 2, 3, 4+ movies about them, often times without changing the style at all. I think that's what differentiates Nolan's batman movies with Favreau's Iron Man movies. One is a unique, newly created version of a basic story, the other is basically just bringing the comic book to life through a done-a-hundred-times-before production.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Mar 1, 2012 -> 01:41 PM) I was never a comic book fan, but damn. You seriously don't like anything, do you? I hate on a lot of stuff, and we hate a lot of the same things, but you dwarf me. Lol, perhaps I should tone it down a touch. I just recommended girl with a dragon tattoo. That was good. Movies for me are such a time commitment that it needs to be good or it's a waste of time. Action flicks these days are becoming reality TV. They have terrible characters and generally make little to no sense. Give me a good comedy or a good drama over these comic book action flicks any day of the week.

I listened to that podcast, it's worth it. Obama sounds like me when I try to talk about the Blackhawks. It's clearly evident to anyone that watches hockey that I have no idea what i'm talking about, but the average person? Yeah I sound legit. Obama, for example, completely left out any mention of Hamilton, who just happens to be the biggest key to the Bulls season.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Mar 1, 2012 -> 12:43 PM) I'm probably going to get killed for this, but just because they made comics doesn't mean the stories didn't completely suck. It still remains very difficult to mesh that many lead characters together, no matter what you have to work with. I'm in agreement with you. I think that trailer looks awful. I can't believe people actually enjoy these movies. Iron Man? Crap. Thor? Crap. The Incredible Hulk? Crap. (didn't see Captain American, assume it's crap). I guess if you were a big fan of the comic as a kid (I was not) I could see where you'd be excited. But just as another summer action flick? Meh. Transformers trailers look cool too, but then you watch the movie.

Finally caught up with the Walking Dead from this last Sunday. 100% in agreement with Steve. Apparently getting bitten isn't required, but having opened wounds covered in zombie blood isn't enough. So dumb. The school scenes were great. The rest was utter crap. Averages to a C. One of the better episodes in a while since something actually happened (though really nothing did, because everyone is still in the exact same place, we just got to see another zombie escape).

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 03:51 PM) "Drive" was very good, very cool. I must really be getting old, though, because I absolutely hated the distracting soundtrack; it reminded me of a bad, late-nite cable 80's flick. I think I'm in the minority but I thought that movie was way overrated. The death sequences were pretty neat, the cinematography was good, and the main bad dude who does voices in the Simpsons was great (and needs to be in more bad-guy movies). But the movie itself was just boring as hell. I think Gosling had, in all seriousness, 10 total lines the entire movie. He just kept staring into the camera. I didn't really care for the ending either.

Anyone see In Time with Timberlake? It was one of those movies with a decent idea but pretty terrible execution. Obvious plot holes (why would the Timecatchers care if someone was stealing some rich asses time knowing full well they were hoarding it for themselves, and when they were in the same boat as the masses in that they got paid only one day for their work?; or, why would the poor with literally minutes to live everyday spend time drinking alcohol at a bar?), some shoddy CGI work (the car flip scene was hilariously bad) and some pretty poor acting by Timberlake (he's fine in a supporting role, definitely can not carry his own movie). That and the whole final speech from the rich guy was the same speech he gave Timberlake's character at the beginning of the movie. That was the climax of the movie and he just repeated the same lines. Snooze. Waste of $4 on Amazon. C-

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 07:59 AM) Mt. Rushmore is pretty cool, and there's lots of other stuff out there to see. I didn't realize you were willing to go THAT far out of your way. Rocky Mtn. National Park in Colorado is very nice. Deadwood is not too far from Mt. Rushmore and is neat. There's a huge ass ball of twine just west of Minneapolis that's, um, interesting. I just did this over the weekend. Very cool.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 05:34 PM) Btw I wanted to clarify that my criticism was directed at self-righteous hollywood assholes, not anyone who enjoyed the film. It was entertaining and had some great performances. Is there another kind in attendance at the Oscars? I can see maybe the role players and newbies, but if you've been there long enough you're bound to start believing the "movies save orphan children" stuff. Best example of this is the nominee intros for best actor/actress. Ugh, their farts smell good.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 04:51 PM) you and Steve - you just have no idea about working in the entertainment industry so you should both keep your mouths' shut on the issue. You have no idea how hard it is. You have no idea the hours that go into it. You have no idea how many auditions she went to that she DIDN'T book - so to book two gigs per month means she has been working her ASS off. The gigs ARE NOT the work in this field. The work is the auditions. Day in and day out going in sometimes multiple times a day and having to prove that you're the right person for this gig - putting yourself on the line - is incredibly difficult and takes a LOT of work and preparation. You sometimes have to learn almost an entire role, just to be told they're going in a different direction. Let me explain it from a personal experience. Jersey Boys. Great show - y'all should see it. I'm perfect type-wise for the Frankie Valli track. They brought me in to what they call "Frankie Camp" where you spend a week learning the songs, the lines, the dances, the character - EVERYTHING. Then at the end of the week they say "alright guys you were great. Some of you will hear from us in a couple months, some in 2014, and this might be the end for some of you too". After pouring everything you've got into it, you have to move on and forget about it and go back to your day job and just keep on auditioning. And you tell me what we do isn't hard work? You have no idea. I said I didn't want to debate!

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 03:58 PM) Since 1996, Octavia Spencer has appeared in 90 television and film projects, most of them small roles. If there's one thing these actors recognize, it's work. They think work is hard (I wouldn't know), and they certainly respect those who put in their time. She works hard as hell. She was fantastic in "The Help". I see no reason she shouldn't receive a standing ovation. Not to make this a debate about whether she worked hard or not, but 90 appearances in 15 years is an average of 2 per month. That's gotta be like a max of 2 weeks of work per month. Is that really a lot in the grand scheme of things?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 04:07 PM) The Help is actually another great example of Hollywood patting itself on the back for boldly confronting racism and social injustice while getting the thing completely wrong and relying largely on stereotypes for minority characters and white people saving the day. Yeah I was going to mention this. The fact that they are celebrating a movie about white people being racist that became popular because those same white people now feel like they solved racism.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 03:33 PM) and the last handful of posters ripping on the movie/selection/reaction to black actors winning awards Come on, when you saw that you didn't get the sense at all that they were basically smelling their own farts? That an entire industry of white people who passed over some legitimate black actors/actresses over the years are suddenly now genuinely happy about a black woman winning one? You mentioned earlier how she was in the business for ever before getting a decent role. How about a guy like Christopher Plummer that went an entire career (decent one too) without winning? He got half the reaction.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 02:32 PM) link I kinda go both ways with this. Part of me says it's great that Rose is so serious. The other part of me says, learn to relax and have some fun. I'm not sure when the All-Star game became so serious. First this nonsense about Lebron not wanting to take the final shot in an exhibition game, and now Rose thinking it's dumb to dance during an entertainment-centered introduction. In the grand scheme none of this means anything. If the Bulls lose again they lose, regardless of how serious Rose takes it or how showey-offey Lebron and Wade are. I mean, I can totally get behind the message that Lebron continues to underachieve because he doesn't take things as seriously as a guy like Rose. But at the end of the day it's going to be about talent and skills, not who works harder.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 02:07 PM) I'd say movies like Forrest Gump, Rain Man and especially Schindler's List were deserving. Slumdog Millionaire as well. It's all matter of personal opinion. I hate musicals, but I'm not going to say the movie Chicago didn't deserve to win best picture, maybe the academy thought it was the best movie that year. I just don't think it's some plot to make certain movies win. On a side note, I hate award shows. I think the idea of making art a competition is incredibly stupid. Woody Allen says hello.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 01:35 PM) wow. so here's the thing. actors and directors and filmmakers think their industry is important? what??? how dare they! Jenks do you think your job matters? do you think your job makes a difference? should we yell at you for saying so? come the f*** on. and they were not giving her a standing ovation because she was black. Black actresses have won awards before. No longer is it groundbreaking. They were applauding because she's a friend who'd been working in the industry for 20+ years who FINALLY got offered a role that wasn't filled with fart jokes, and she delivered in a huge way. I thought it was awesome. that's what you don't get. the oscars are a party for this big group of friends to celebrate the good work they did in the last year. it's just like an end of the year office party, just televised on national tv. you don't like it, don't watch it. It's a gigantic circle jerk is what it is. If it was all about friends getting together to congratulate themselves then do it in the Bel-Air Hilton ball room and shut the door. Instead it's an industry created slobfest that is broadcast to the world. It's made worse by the continuing reminder about how important it is.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 01:13 PM) The problem is that about half of those were chosen over better candidates. It's not just those particular cases either. Slumdog Millionaire won over about half a dozen better movies that year. I can't explain it perfectly, but it was shoved down our throats as a feel-good, never-give-up-hope, help-yourself picture in a down economic year. It's just that they often choose a movie or actor to make a statement rather than the most deserving one. I see what you're saying and I totally agree. When Octavia Spencer won the Oscar, and the crowd (98% white people) gave her a standing ovation, I just busted out laughing. She may well be completely deserving, I have no idea since I didn't see the movie. But the whole scene had this subtext (read in aristocratic english accent): "Oh! Look at us. We made a film about African Americans, and I dare say she was quite good. Yes, yes. Let's congratulate ourselves her for the work we she did. We're so forward thinking unlike the rest of the uncivilized masses in this country! Bravo!" Maybe if Hollywood stopped the pretentious, arrogant bulls*** every year people wouldn't think that way. But it's hard not to when people like Clooney talk about movies single-handedly starting every minority rights/acceptance movement in the country's history. Or when they beat you over the head with "movies are what make us live from one moment to the next" crap.
