QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Feb 16, 2012 -> 09:35 AM) It is beyond absurd to suggest that there will be a recruiting rut regardless of who they bring in. I can't see a guy like Shaka Smart not being successful as a recruiter. And if a guy can recruit he will be successful at it right away (Mark Gottfried just brought in a monster class for 2012 right off the bat at NC St. for f***s sake). Also, there is a very good chance that Jalen James and Malcolm Hill stay committed if you hire the right coach because both of those guys just really like Illinois and want to play for Illinois (James in particular). I think the Gottfried thing is an abnormality. Recruiting isn't an easy fix. It's relationship building, which takes time. I think it's a foregone conclusion that Jerrance Howard is also out, though maybe if they throw some money his way he'll stay. He's the key guy in this. He can bridge the gap between Weber and the new coach.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Feb 16, 2012 -> 09:13 AM) Agreed, this is a sad situation. I know it's a message board and we're all supposed to be fire-breathing assholes, but I feel bad for Bruce and the end of the road here. Last night you were listening to a man defeated. He knew it was the end. It's hard to imagine what he's feeling, don't think any of us have been in such a situation. I'm not terribly upset with his comments. Did he throw guys under the bus? Sure. But for years he's been protecting dumb, lazy players, and he finally called a spade a spade. And it's not like it was crazy, he was just defeated and was honest. I mean what exactly did he say that was incorrect or so out of line? Leonard was a dog, he's got a terrible attitude, Paul plays like an idiot (that last play is not what was drawn up at all, Paul was selfish and just stupid), DJ failed to do anything on offense. So on and so on. It IS sad that Abrams is your leader. Now yes, he recruited those lazy, dumb, etc, players. So yes, it's the end of the road. Ultimately, it's on him. I'm sad to see him go. Not in the I want him to stay kind of way, just sad that it's coming to an end. Bruce is a good guy, he ran a clean program (nothing tells me otherwise), he works very hard and cares a lot about the team and the university. But yes, the success recently wasn't there, so this is what will happen. Doesn't mean it isn't a sad time, IMO. I don't see the point in firing him now just because of those comments. He's not the first coach to call out a player or a team, whether that coach was on the hot seat or not. Will it be awkward? Sure. But maybe it will get through to them, and even if nothing happens productive this year, those players can take some of that with their career moving forward. But I think he deserves to just coach through the BTT at the least, and then we can move forward. I also don't think it looks very good to the college basketball world to fire him right now. I mean yes he won't be here next year, however I don't see all the great things that can come from him not being here and having the rest of the staff coach the rest of the way. It's not a great situation, I know. MT also said he will wait until after the season, and I don't think an 8 minute press with a defeated man after 9 years will/should change that. I wishing nothing but the best for Bruce at the next program he takes over. He was around for some great years early, and just IMO, he coached that team up to get to where they needed to be. We don't need to argue about Self recruits for the rest of the thread. But generally he's respected as a good coach, however his lack of talent (or the wrong talent) brought in ultimately hurt him. I see what he means by coaching not to lose. Obviously he was feeling everything and nowhere to go with the team, trying to win now and that's it, not thinking long term. He takes the blame for it, and it's a shame that's how it played out with the last few teams. Color me sad today just with the overall situation. I hope both the team and him can move forward over the next few years and both have success. Agreed. I'm in hopes the players, Leonard and Paul especially, realize that their play and attitude played a part in this. They should go out and try and dominate to end on a good note.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 16, 2012 -> 07:03 AM) I was firmly in the camp that thought Thomas should let him coach out the season. But after hearing about that press conference last night, how do you let him stick around? How are the players gonna feel to be around him? You know it's bad when the Score spends a huge chunk of time in the morning talking Illini basketball. Agreed. Let McClain show is coaching expertise (none). In all seriousness though, the whole thing is just sad. The guy never had a chance with the fan base. No one wanted him, even when he succeeded beyond what Kruger and Self were able to do (the whole line about Self's recruits is bulls***. He coached that team up from borderline good to great). He probably should have been fired a few seasons ago to save the embarrassment both of him and the program. Or at the very least they should have told him take that job at Oklahoma last year, or wherever else he got a job offer (wasn't Oregon one a few seasons back?). Losing to teams like Penn State and Northwestern year in and year out is just not acceptable. The fact that he's been on the hotseat for a few years - you just can't coach that way, as he admitted last night. Too much pressure because every loss gets you that much closer to losing all support. So instead of losing early to win later, he wanted to do everything he could to win in the present. And you could see that with his refusal to play younger guys because they make mistakes, so instead he plays guys like Sam who won't turn the ball over, but probably won't be good enough to win either. He needs a fresh start, as does the program itself. I still see a gigantic problem with expectations though. All those highly ranked recruits the next few years? Most are Weber guys, including any chance they had with Parker (who according to Klee, is still very interested in Illinois). So the program is back to being stuck in a recruiting rut, no matter who they bring in. When the new coach fails to land big recruits in his first season or two, get ready for the same boo birds that were all over Weber for not being able to land anyone. f***ing sucks, the whole thing.

Another good one: http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/ven...raER_story.html Until I read this I forgot that only Bush and Cheney helped out their friends as a result of their policy. I'm also glad the media is covering this on a daily basis like they did from 2004-2008.

Need some advice
QUOTE (farmteam @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 04:20 PM) Would he just need something from a doctor? I'd think it would need to actually be adjudicated, as Soxbadger referenced. To invalidate the POA yeah, you'd eventually need a judge/jury to agree with you. But if you can't find a doctor to declare him mentally incompetent there's no point in bringing the action for fraud or conversion in the first place.

Need some advice
Need to find out if a there was more than just the power of attorney. If they opened up a guardianship, there are some limitations to what the guardian can/can't do. They're supposed to be looking after his affairs for his benefit, not their own. If he just signed the POA, you could attempt to get that invalidated since he didn't have the mental capacity to sign it. That'd require something from his doctor. That's why you normally would open up an estate to get the same powers as a POA, without the need for him to agree to it. I'd talk to an attorney about it. If you're talking about a few thousand bucks lost, since you stopped them from getting anything in the future i'd move on. At some point getting an attorney involved becomes a financial decision - is it worth it? A few thousand bucks? Probably not. I'm guessing this couple, if they're stealing from him, are a bunch of deadbeats anyway. Even if you got a judgment you couldn't collect. Tough situation. People are assholes.

You be the judge
QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 01:13 PM) That is a ridiculous example. The information has to be something that is considered an important private concern, such as your personal finances, your health, your SEXUALITY, etc. It IS about my sexuality. Remove the public aspect of it. I'm in the same situation as this person. I'm completely asexual in public, but there's a rumor that I do in fact like women. The teachers get it out of me and tell my parents. According to this ruling I have an expectation that my sexual orientation should remain private.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 01:02 PM) minority class vs norm, but legally maybe. That would depend on a legal expectation of privacy. Based on these decisions apparently I have an expectation that my sexual orientation, whatever that may be, is private. There are two things at play here. One is the right to privacy (constitutional), the other is the actionable civil cause of action for invasion of privacy. They are not the same.
-
You be the judge
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 12:59 PM) No, it doesn't. It accepts orientation as private and nothing more. Ok, so if a teacher tells my parents he saw me kissing a girl in the hallway, I can sue because he's invaded my privacy of sexual orientation right?
-
You be the judge
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 12:54 PM) The right to privacy doesn't revolve around the moral acceptability of the private information. That is a terrible argument. My point was that this line of judicial thinking inherently accepts the viewpoint that homosexuality is bad, whether they intend it or not. You're segmenting out sexual orientation, but only homosexuality, as something private. You're picking and choosing. It's akin to affirmative action - discrimination is fine, but only when used in what we, a panel of judges, determines to be the right situation.

You be the judge
QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 12:45 PM) This is completely irrelevant and nowhere present in any set of elements for a claim for invasion of privacy that I can find. The issue is not the character of the information and whether it offends anyone. The issue is whether the court considers the information something the subject would consider a private concern. An example frequently given is a credit report. To get to this: you have to decide this: Otherwise the fact that I love singing in the shower (or any other number of things I don't want people to know) is private and i should be able to sue if someone lets it out.

You be the judge
QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 12:31 PM) As I said to Badger, what are the requisite elements for damages in an invasion of privacy case? It's not for us to determine whether or not the subject should want us to know something or not...it only matters that the subject did not and that the defendant's actions were illegal in disclosing that information. But you're skipping the first step, which is whether the information disclosed is "private" such that an invasion of that privacy is actionable. What these cases are essentially saying is that sexual orientation is now "private" information that shouldn't be disclosed without approval. Inherent in saying that is that something is wrong with being gay. You wouldn't see an invasion of privacy claim for outing me as being heterosexual right?

What's the worse that can happen? They keep losing?
-
You be the judge
QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 12:19 PM) Well that's not the question in this case. The invasion of privacy issue goes to the facts that occurred up until the point the mother was told her daughter is a homosexual. The discrimination laws would go to the damages, and therefore, what occurred as a result of the mother being told her daughter is a homosexual. And I think that's where this case falls apart and probably was a gigantic waste of time/money/resources. There are no damages here other than, what, embarrassment? But it's only embarrassment if we're determining that homosexuality is somehow bad or unsightly or something that should be kept private.

So, if Illinois loses to Purdue at home tonight, grounds to fire Weber? 7 losses in the last 8 games?
-
You be the judge
QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 12:10 PM) No it doesn't. It recognizes there ARE measurable consequences in our society for being a homosexual. Should we not allow any lawsuits for discrimination against the handicapped because it might suggest there is something wrong with it? Would it be an invasion of privacy to disclose that someone has a disability? No, because inherent in discrimination laws is that you KNOW the person is disabled, but still do x,y, and z in response.

2012 TV Thread
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 12:01 PM) The worse part is, I saw mine had started recording and than I woke up in the morning and it wasn't there. I only know this case I was watching something else that was DVR'd but saw the record icon next to Alcatraz. Additionally, I didn't have anything that would have inhibited it. Oh well, DirectTV is usually pretty good. I guess I'll just have to watch it on Fox. All I know is the last episode (about the escaped guard) made it looks like this show could get more interesting. The question is how long does it take to get a good story and how long until the whole show isn't just focused on one prisoner per episode. Unfortunately it's looking like it will be one case per episode. But at least in this last one the case actually gave more backstory with the mystery stuff.

2011-2012 NBA Season Thread
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 15, 2012 -> 10:26 AM) I believe Carmelo Anthony is going to thrive working with Jeremy Lin. Things Melo is terrible at: (1) moving without the ball, (2) setting screens/getting others involved in the offense, (3) playing defense. If Lin dominates the PG spot, as he should, then Melo becomes the off-guard that has to create his shot from movement. Good luck. And what happens at the end of the game? Is Lin forgotten about? Obviously he will be, and the ball will be in Melo's hands. But will Knick fans be content with that when you've gotten nothing but W's from Lin taking that lead role, but .500 ball with Melo taking that lead role? This is similar to the Wade/Lebron can't coexist argument. The difference though is that both Wade and Lebron play defense and run well without the ball. They both dominate games because they can create offense without having the ball in their hands. It'll be interesting to see if D'Antoni can create a new system to utilize all of the talent he's got. If he sticks with his current system, Melo becomes seconday, and that's a huge waste of talent and money.
