  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 08:41 PM) I'm telling you that you have homophobic/bigoted views and that you put your own bigoted desires ahead of your hypothetical child. I'm not trying to guilt trip you. I'm hoping to show you that you hold some pretty terrible views. While I don't agree at all with FlySox here....you throwing out a term like bigot is pretty hypocritical. You're pretty intolerant of anyone's opinions that don't conform to your own, especially conservative ones. Opinions are like assholes: everyone's got them. I think we can all agree that what he did was unprofessional. He shouldn't have done it. The question is whether we should be taking this moral stance that what he did was an affront to the entire gay community. That I think is bulls***. What two people say or do in private communications is entirely different than what someone would say in public. I don't think this was "public" at all, even if it was in a ballpark. As others have said, this was a non-issue until a writer wanting some page views deciding to make it one.
  2. This thread has been amazingly entertaining.
  3. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 04:37 PM) Also not sure how to reconcile this: with this: or the Republican response with this: Failing to raise the debt limit will result in ~10% loss of GDP spending, launching us off the cliff into another recession. Republican economics has turned into a hardline religious orthodoxy. I think people are adding the qualifier "without doing other things simultaneously" in their minds when answering that question.
  4. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 03:12 PM) Frankly when the tea party thread started with a bunch of blanket statements you had a bunch of the admins in here and other posters saying "you can't make blanket statements" etc. The difference is now there are admins endorsing this activity, which I would argue is bad for the forum. The tea party racist things was bad, and it was addressed early on and i think the point was driven home and people have TRIED to stop. The suicide in kentucky where the person tried to play it off as a murder because he was a census worker was a thread where I was completely wrong. It's not like we are going to reduce the amount of blanket statements or heated arguments in here to zero in here, it would probably get pretty boring anyway. And the regulars here usually realize on their own when they step over the line and just leave to cool off. But I do think people try to have honest conversation and when pure incitement happens it should get the ridicule it deserves. I'm not sure if you remember, but athomeboy was as democrat as democrat could be during the 08 election and his constant stupid posts about the menial day to day in washington that was pro obama pretty much annoyed everyone. It wasn't at all helpful to discussion. So I find this pretty ridiculous that he's given so much leeway for personal attacks and blanket statements out of some sort of revenge. All i'm saying is that the outlandish stuff he has posted isn't any more outlandish than what others have posted. I just think the response he got was a little over the top.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 02:51 PM) how does one argue that they ARE patriotic if the definition they are classifying for being patriotic are mostly just things that are identified with being republican? How does one classify themselves as a tea party member who's not racist when people just classify all tea party members as racist? I get your point, but you guys do the same s*** and act like it's different because what, your opinion is more valid?
  6. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 02:26 PM) So you agree that he's baiting/trolling. Yeah. Those topics are never discussed/debated back and forth. Everyone is asked to remain silent whenever a blanket statement is thrown in here. We need to also be silent to this new guy's biases. Unless he's some old poster that's come back under a new name, I dunno how he can be trolling/baiting. He sounds like that's his honest opinion. You guys didn't debate or argue with him, you just attacked him for thinking that way.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 01:42 PM) bulls***. There have been a number of conservative posters who have left on their own because they didn't like having to argue their points to liberals on the board don't like being in circle jerk cross-fire. There is probably an equal split of liberal to conservative posters that actively participate in this forum. Both sides go at it about the same. ANd the conservatives whine just as much if not more. Fixed that for ya. At some point it's not worth the effort of contributing because you know that you'll instantly be called a racist homophob that hates poor people and ignores simple science. Also, I love that this new guy is just crushed for pages and pages because he stereotypes liberals as being anti-patriotic, but you guys spewed (and continue to spew) how much bulls*** about members of the Tea Party? (as one example)
  8. Anyone else see Cedar Rapids with Ed Helms? It was a little too disjointed but had a lot of hysterical moments. It's too bad they couldn't have added about 30 more minutes to round out the story.
  9. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 8, 2011 -> 04:17 PM) Im busy today, so I cant really give all of your responses the time they deserve, but here goes nothing: The end game is that Leal deserves to be allowed to contact his consulate and then have a trial. If he is convicted in that trial, he then deserves all of the appeal processes. If after that point we is still guilty, Texas can execute him. Imo, the state of Texas cut corners, and I dont think that is fair, at least not to me. So I think the state of Texas should bear the responsibility of fixing their error and going back to the beginning. From what I understand, Texas didn't cut corners. YEARS ago the Supreme Court agreed and said no, Texas doesn't have to do that. Moreover, you're a lawyer, when does any sentence of judgment get stayed to see what legislation MIGHT pass in the future? That's insane. The dude missed a phone call 16 years ago. The consulate couldn't have changed what happened. At most the consulate MIGHT have provided him a lawyer from Mexico he might have felt more comfortable with, but there's been ZERO evidence of ANY wrongdoings by his attorneys (who at some point were not just public defenders but attorneys from the various legal aid clinics) You can keep saying Texas did something wrong, but it's not going to suddenly turn true. That's just factually incorrect. They had no obligation to follow that treaty. This was explained by the SC in 2008. This guy was given a fair trial and all the appeals possible. It's ridiculous to condemn Texas when they probably spent more time and money on this case than this guy was worth. Instead of worrying about the one telephone call this guy missed, which wouldn't have changed ANYTHING, why not think about the fact that he brutally raped and murdered a 16 year old girl. I find it odd that you have these incredibly strong opinions about prisoners and the death penalty, yet there's not a mention of the most important person here, and that's the girl that was killed.
  10. QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Jul 8, 2011 -> 12:43 PM) According to Adrian Wojnarowski: Yao Ming has informed the Rockets that he is retiring from the NBA source: http://twitter.com/#!/WojYahooNBA/stat...383420307841025 Pretty sad he could never stay healthy. He showed flashes of being a top 5 caliber player. But, he made an ungodly amount of money, so good for him.
  11. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 8, 2011 -> 09:57 AM) I've always thought that it started going down when they quit trying to teach abstinence and instead starting handing out condoms and telling kids "We know you are going to try it, but at least be smart about it." Teenage pregnancy and teenagers having sex are two different things. My point wasn't to be all preachy about it, I just never understood why people were against teaching abstinence. As if that's some horrible advice.
  12. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 8, 2011 -> 09:13 AM) Because it has been proven to not work. At all? Or enough? I thought the percentage of teens having sex dropped a good amount during the early 00's?
  13. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 8, 2011 -> 09:18 AM) Only if you believe our process is important. That's not an answer.
  14. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 8, 2011 -> 08:12 AM) I haven't heard enough people say we need teenagers and other people not ready for real parenting to stop having babies. To me, it's one of the biggest problems in our country. This is what happens when a narcissist like Casey Anthony doesn't like her human toy anymore. She just throws it away. I think the bolded is pretty obvious. But how do you fix that problem? Currently our solution is to throw our hands in the air and scream bloody murder when people want to teach abstinence in school (the horror!). We're more content just handing out paychecks for kids.
  15. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 10:51 PM) You fail to see any sadness in the fact that the US has an agreement with Mexico and the US failed to honor that agreement? At the end of the day, I take my word seriously. If I tell you that we have an agreement, that means something. As an United States citizen I am ashamed that we told 170 countries that we would abide by a treaty and we failed to do it. Not only that, but after we were told we were in the wrong, we didnt even change our actions, we just went on our way acting like it doesnt matter, that somehow vengeance is more important then our word. That makes me sad, it makes me sad because we are supposed to be a country where there is liberty and justice for all. And that means we treat the worst of society with the same respect and decency we treat the best of society. I wonder what the people of the great state of Texas would say if an American civilian was denied rights in Mexico and executed. Would we merely say "Well Mexico has that right" or would we expect more? Would we expect that our citizen be given the rights and treatment that Mexico agreed to give them when they signed the treaty? So today I am sad, not because of the death, but because we were so hellbent on killing this man that we had to break our word to do it. And unlike you, I dont believe Mr. Leal will be going to hell, I dont believe hes going anywhere. Dead is dead. I've asked before but have yet to hear an answer. What's the end game here? Spend another 5-10 years with this guy retrying him? Re-sentencing him? Going through all the appeals, etc.? Over a missed phone call that wouldn't have made any difference?
  16. dumb dumb dumb dumb dummmmbbbbb This is like that federal law that was passed when the guy killed his pregnant wife. Politicians just trying to get some headlines.
  17. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 01:30 PM) It sounds like you are arguing that the government does not have an obligation to follow the law if later someone is found guilty. What law did Texas violate?
  18. Didn't know where to put this, but I figure it's "investment" related. So has anyone else been screwed by an escrow fund review? My wife and I bought a place last year. For some unknown reason (which i'm investigating) our property taxes went up by $500/installment (2nd of last year, and first of this year), and our house insurance went up by $500. My bank sees this and "projecting" into the future tells me that the escrow fund is gonna be like 800 bucks short next year. Thus, they're asking me for that plus an amount near double that so they can set up a "reserve" account. So at the end of the day my monthly payments are going up about $300 a month. For you long time home owners out there - do property taxes and insurance go up like that every year? I mean, i figured they'd go up some, but that seems a bit excessive.
  19. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 11:21 AM) Thats the legal question, which has already been decided by the Supreme Court. Since we arent arguing in a courtroom, we are entitled to our own opinions. Just because the Supreme Court rules a certain way doesnt mean they are right and it doesnt mean we shouldnt have conversation about it. So I guess you agree that its okay for Texas to execute? Yeah, I mean the guy was convicted of rape/murder. I don't see how him being given the chance to talk to a rep from Mexico would change that. It's akin to staying an execution because the guy didn't get his one phone call on the initial night he was locked up. Plus, what's the end game with the stay? If there was some grave injustice done here, you gotta let him free right? That's not gonna happen, so what's the point in delaying the inevitable?
  20. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 6, 2011 -> 05:13 PM) http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/obama-...-165829939.html Here are the basic facts: There is a treaty the US is a party to, that basically states that if a foreigner is arrested they have to be granted access to their consulate. Both sides agree that this Defendant was not granted that access. Disregarding the arguments of whether or not a state is bound by the treaty before Congress passes the treaty, what do you think the best course of action is? I personally think this is one of those times where you have to smart and not rush to do something. I would hate for an American national to end up in a similar situation and have that country use this as a reason to not give our citizen the rights they deserve under the treaty. Since the Casey Anthony is the past now, I figured some people may want to discuss some more legal issues. Well wait, that's THE question isn't it? Texas supposedly did something wrong, but in 2008 the Supreme Court ruled that they didn't. I fail to see what the issue is here. And not rush anything? This guy was convicted back in 1994. Unless you're willing to throw out that conviction/sentence on a technicality, what's the point in staying this even further? Also the article's examples of the people in NK and Iran are a whole different bag since they were alleged to have been spies for the US. That necessarily involves some US representative. This guy was a rapist and a murderer. What would him talking to the Mexican consulate do? Was the US going to hand him over after clearing up a "mistake" like in the other cases? Doubtful since, again, the dude raped and murdered someone.
  21. Somewhere Sean Penn is crying about the world losing one of its best leaders.
  22. Also, I agree 100% with her attorney:
  23. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 6, 2011 -> 10:57 AM) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_white_woman_syndrome Seriously the American public has a bizarre fascination with attractive white women. I bring this up often, but Girl X's incident happened around the same time as Jonbenet Ramsey, everybody knows who Ramsey is but hardly anybody remembers Girl X. One of them got weeks, months, years of speculation about the case, the other got mentioned on the 10 o'clock news a couple times. I didn't understand the insane amount of coverage either. Maybe it has to do with her being a sort of typical average suburban American? She wasn't a gang member who killed someone, she wasn't some hillbilly house wife that shot her abusive husband. She was the sort of "everyday" girl that the majority of people in the country could relate too that did something truly awful in killing her own child. It's almost straight out of one of those Dateline crime shows.
  24. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 6, 2011 -> 12:00 PM) My wife was at CVS last night.
