Remember how Obama was going to save America's terrible global image thanks to that good for nothing Bush? Well, turns out that was a lot harder than it sounded. Shocker! http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/071...Arab_world.html

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 12:57 PM) The trial wouldn't have been rated nearly as highly if they didn't, which is why everyone was so shocked at the end. they listened to the Nancy Grace's of the world, instead of the trail itself. I love when you read the various message boards on the internet or comments in stories where people add their opinion. A lot start with "Now, I didn't watch the entire trial, BUT..."

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 09:54 PM) coming to the same conclusions, where else are you looking? hulu is good for a few shows but not much else. I also subscribe to Hulu Plus and the movie selection isn't that good, but the TV selection is better, especially for current stuff. I'd still like it if Hulu allowed me to stream more content to my phone or through my TV, but apparently their contracts only allow them to stream some of their content over the web. Makes no difference to me since I have a computer hooked up to my TV, but it's an extra step to deal with. Hulu also is starting to suck because they're adding more and more commercials. It used to be that at most you'd have to watch a 8-10 second commercial at the beginning of the show. Then the moved to being able to watch a minute of commercials before the show, and now they have just straight up commercial breaks. 7.99/month is better than 50 or more for cable, but it still kinda sucks to have to sit through those. Honestly Netflix for us is only good anymore for the few shows that we can't get through Hulu and don't care to buy. Mainly that would be Showtime/HBO shows like True Blood, Californication, Dexter, etc. 95% of movies that we rent anymore come from the RedBox. Our TV shows come from Hulu. I basically watch random documentaries and old TV shows (Futurama, South Park) and now that it's 16 bucks a month I could probably do without that.

QUOTE (FlySox87 @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 07:55 AM) Don't Ask, Don't Tell and then it's repeal: I don't like the idea that professional politicians who never served in the military are trying to use the military as a social experiment to advance gay rights and add bullet points to their political resumes. The military exists to defend America and win the nation's wars. So I don't really like when I have to use time that could be spent at a range improving marksmanship skills or out in the COF (company operating facility) working on tactical maneuvers that will help more of us come home alive when we eventually deploy, to instead educate the troops on how to accept gay people. I think that's silly. But I'm glad that gay Soldiers can now inform their superiors that they are facing sexual orientation harassment without having to fear that that same superior will have them chaptered out of the military. That doesn't help that situation at all. Gay marriage? You find a priest who will marry you and fine, you can be wed. But if you find a priest who believes gay marriage is absolutely prohibited, you cannot do anything to force him to change that and cave to your demands. That's my big fear here. That people who don't believe gay marriage is allowed will be forced to cave to the demands of gays and their supporters. The rights of those people need to be protected too. Assuming gay people don't try to squash the free expression of their adversaries, I don't really care. My solution to the gay marriage debate is that I won't get one. But this is far different from my personal relationship with my son. That's my son. I have expectations for what he should be. I'd really like it if he was a far-right, America loving, gun toting (I'm gonna teach him how to shoot) man who has endless ambitions and as much interest in the world as I do and aspires to join the military some day. But if I'm not that lucky, I'll still love him as a son. I think any father has some dream of what he wants his son to be like. This is mine, but it doesn't determine whether I'll love the kid. That priest would be one bigoted, discriminatory asshole, and his/her belief about the right/wrong of this issue should not be afforded any protections since they are "terrible" and "abhorrent."

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 05:50 PM) I understand I just think the bigger share of the market Netflix had before their contracts expire, the easier it would be for them to defray any potential increase in the contracts. If I have 10mil subscribers and have to pay $100mil more that is $10 per subscriber. If I have 100mil subscribers and have to pay $100mil more that is $1 per. I just think its a gamble to so drastically raise the price, without giving any more service and without making the promise that all dvd's will be streaming. That is my problem, I dont really want dvd's just not everything is streamed, so every once in a while I need to get a disk. Netflix is on the verge of becoming irrelevant in the streaming game. Their contracts are up and their pricing model doesn't allow them to pay as much for the movie rights as other, deeper-pocketed competitors. They almost had to do this. Unfortunately for this long time subscriber, unless they come up with a better streaming selection, i'll be getting rid of Netflix altogether. It's been about 4-5 weeks since anything good has come to the streaming portion of the site.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 02:00 PM) Actually, it's not ok, which is why we call guys like that frat boy douchebags. I'm not sure who told you it's ok because they're straight, but it's not...and never has been. Just because HIS crew thinks it's ok, doesn't mean the rest of us think it's ok. The same way a very flamboyant homosexual's crew probably doesn't mind the extreme flamboyance. Bingo.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 01:41 PM) I think you missed the point here. We hear constantly, in this thread, how people have no problems with gay people, they just wish they wouldn't wear the fact that they're gay on their sleeve all the time. Oh and did you see that girl at the party last night? Man she was so hot. Or here, take a look at my photos of my kids. Aren't they adorable? If you can spot a guy within 10 seconds and say he's hetero, that's loud to me. There's a difference between that and the more reserved heteros. Come on, there are certain gay men who are incredibly flamboyant to the point of being extremely annoying and obnoxious. It has nothing to do with them preferring men over women and everything to do with them acting that way.

I just finished watching Game of Thrones Season 1, and i'm about 150 pages short of finishing the first book. I'm VERY excited to find out what happens. I only have approx 1800 pages to go before I can dive into the newest one...

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 12:18 PM) You can't just randomly cleave apart what he's saying to make half-assed excuses for his bigotry. I'm not making excuses for him, i'm saying that what he says is probably factually true, though for different reasons.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 12:14 PM) You're switching what's being discussed here, though. He's not saying "I wouldn't want my kid to be gay because he'd have to deal with bigoted assholes and would have a harder life," he's saying it because he'd be ashamed and disgusted. Which is part of the problem of gays having to deal with bigoted assholes. Well, i think he said 99% of men wouldn't want to have gay sons. I dunno that he claimed that that's because of how gross being gay is, though that's clearly his opinion.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 12:05 PM) You're going to have to back that 99% up, though I'd break up 6 yo's kissing too regardless of gender. You're going to scare your child and teach them to be afraid of being themselves. It'll result in a lot of emotional issues and they won't have their family to work it out with. Again, I'll confidently say it was never, ever an issue that my brother was gay with my family. There was no big "coming out" discussion. 99% is probably high, but I bet if you did a poll the vast, vast majority would agree that they would hope that their kid was not gay, regardless of their views on homosexuality and regardless of how they think they'd act as a parent in that situation. Fact of the matter is that life is incredibly difficult and parents (or people who want to be parents) want their kids to live the easiest life possible.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 11:40 AM) Uh, yeah, when you think an entire minority population is morally inferior because of who they are, that's discrimination. Discrimination requires an act. Otherwise it's just an opinion. What about people that find homosexuality a sin and totally wrong, yet they don't believe in discrimination or inequality, etc. Still bigotry/discrimination?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 11:33 AM) Oh, right, advocating that they stay the f*** in the closet and pretend they're someone they're not to make others happy or not shame their parents is discrimination. It couldn't possibly lead to enormous social and personal emotional issues for gays. He views homosexuality as shameful. There's no way around that. There's no way around that being discriminatory. You don't need to be Fred Phelps to be homophobic. So whenever you think something is wrong you're automatically discriminating? Really? It's that black and white?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 11:23 AM) Then define bigotry. Seems like the extreme views towards gays in here were textbook examples. Being completely intolerant towards a specific group of people, be it political, ethnic, or other. IMO him giving his opinion that he wouldn't want a gay son doesn't go to that degree. He's not saying all homosexuals should be round up and shot. He's not saying we should discriminate against them (in fact didn't he acknowledge the problem with discrimination?) I just don't think it hit that line. And I should make it clear that I don't agree with his opinions (in this thread and others). But as I've said in other threads, I feel like the dude is the only guy bringing the extreme conservative opinions to the board and he's instantly rejected and called an idiot and a bigot. That's f***ed up. I've heard a lot of stupid opinions on the other extreme that don't get the same reaction.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 11:14 AM) I hate this "you're bigoted against bigots!!!" solipsism. No, it's not being a bigot to call out a bigot. Not all opinions are valid or equal. His views that children should lie about who they are or not turn to their parents in times of need because it might shame them are terrible. Would we apply the same "everyone's got opinions, you can't call him a bigot!" standard to someone who came in from Stormfront? I can't apologize since I don't know what you're specifically referring to (and searching via google is a pita), but I wouldn't call you that based on what you've posted itt. Well, we won't agree on this so i'm not gonna spend the day going round and round. Somewhere there's a line of bigotry that IMO was not crossed. Having a "terrible" opinion isn't enough.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 10:20 AM) You'll have to demonstrate an instance of me being bigoted or I'll have to ask you to retract that claim. Yes, I often aggressively argue my opinions, that doesn't mean I view all others as illegitimate or bigoted. I butt heads frequently with you, Y2HH, and ss2k5 but I don't think I've called you outright bigots--because you don't post the terrible stuff FlySox is. Yeah, everyone has opinions. But not all opinions are valid or worthwhile. Stormfront's got a lot of people with a lot of opinions and they're all terrible people for holding those opinions. This is just a lame cop-out that fails to distinguish between well-supported and well-reasoned opinions and s***ty ones like "I'd be sad for the rest of my life if my kid was gay and I'd rather he lead a miserable lie of a life so that I could be happier" You're telling people they have terrible views. You refuse to acknowledge that other people have differing opinions than you that may or may not be valid. This guy might be off his rocker, but his opinion about gay people or his own thoughts of his own son being gay are just as valid or relevant as your clearly opposite views. We're talking about opinions, not something that can be proven through logical discourse. I'm not saying you can't give him s*** for it, but when you through out "you're being a bigot" you're doing the EXACT same thing - you're being completely intolerant of his opinion simply because you don't agree with him. And I don't know how to easily search the soxtalk forums, but i'm pretty certain you've called me a bigot for trying to make a point that Y2HH just made a page or two ago that homosexuality is "abnormal" in the sense that it occurs in 5% (or whatever the percent is) of the time. You took that as me making some moral stance on the issue, which I wasn't.
