What's more appalling here too is that everyone else but the teachers have sacrificed. The State has funded more than they wanted to. The City has raised taxes when it didn't want to, and CPS itself is making cuts to meet the balanced budget. And yet the teachers are like, nope, f*** you, if you touch our salaries we're going to strike. Also, won't someone think of the children!

2016 Rio Olympics Thread

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 9, 2016 -> 07:49 PM) ThIs is where I remind everyone that NBC asked the IOC to change the order of countries from alphabetical order at the Opening Ceremonies, just to appease their broadcast. They are the enemy, not everyone on Twitter. It's 2016 man. There's no changing it, I get it. But it still sucks to learn about it at 3pm or whatever. -
It's been 90 days, time to start threatening another strike. Good God I wish the CPS would implode so we could start over. I'm so glad i'm not a parent in that s*** system.

Not much of a reason to watch tonight thanks to everyone on Twitter. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 9, 2016 -> 03:52 PM) That's not true. Only those true blue state senators like Kirk have not endorsed (and Rauner), but Paul Ryan won't actively not endorse him. Marco Rubio is still endorsing him. Mitch McConnell is endorsing him. Kelly Ayotte endorses him. So you have Kirk and Collins. We'll see if that lasts. They've all publicly spoken out against he dumb things he's said too. Ryan's endorsement always felt forced, as did Rubio's (doesn't excuse them, however). In addition to the "young" guys, few well-established Republicans are endorsing him. It's basically the Newt Gingrich/Gulianni's of the world - people who want to continue talking into a camera for a living.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Aug 9, 2016 -> 03:33 PM) Steve, did you steal that from Trump's remarks today? https://twitter.com/KilloughCNN/status/763102058845184000 Are we f***ing done with this national embarrassment yet? Can the GOP sack up and do something and euthanize this abomination of a campaign already? It's not only stupid but dangerous to let it continue. While I would like it, what can they do at this point? Take back the nomination? The only thing they can do is what they're doing - anyone with a future in the GOP is running away from him, loudly and publicly. He's going to go down in a sinking ship with very few people onboard.

Everyone should sign this: http://fixillinois.com/ I don't care if it's a long term solution or not. Change it in 20 years. For now, the Madigan machine needs to be destroyed.

QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 8, 2016 -> 09:11 AM) Why didnt the Republican party just nominate Ryan when they had the chance? Yeah it would have been unprecedented but still clearly the best option for them and in their heart of hearts a guy they would rather endorse than Trump anyway. I am sure this has probably been addressed along the way in here but I dont come in the buster much and didnt see it while sifting through. I really would like to know their reasoning why they stuck with Trump even though they all knew it was the wrong thing to do. He didn't want it and came out and said he wouldn't accept it. He knows he has a much better chance in 4 years or maybe 8 years. Let the party implode, as it will, and then be the one reasonable voice left in a sea of s*** candidates.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 5, 2016 -> 07:34 AM) Oh no, you are about to experience the Band of Brother addiction for the first time. Its easily one of my favorite shows of all time and from now on when its on TV you WILL watch it. BoB is amazing and I watch it at least once every year. The Pacific is also great. People think it's the lesser of the two, but I think that's just due to the nature of covering 6-8 guys in Easy Company through their involvement in the war vs. three random guys through theirs.

New Police Shooting video in Chicago about to be Released
Jenksismyhero replied to bmags's topic in The Filibuster
SS here's your fleeing felon law: Obviously that's where the argument lies, if he posed the immediate threat. It's a closer question IMO if he's willing to hit two cop cars and continue fleeing. That to me is a sign that the public is in danger with him still fleeing. -

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Aug 5, 2016 -> 12:25 PM) For everyone's convenience, can we have a list in advance of situations in which spontaneous public summary execution is justified? Thank you. I think it's disingenuous to call this a spontaneous execution. It was a car chase followed by pursuit on foot. This dude had every opportunity to stop and give up. He didn't. Again, in the grand scheme of things, after all the awful shootings that have happened, this is so far down the list. -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 5, 2016 -> 12:23 PM) well the police review board seems to pretty strongly disagree, as does the CPD given how quickly they stripped those involved of their police powers. Looked like he got out of the car and was running away at that point. Shooting an unarmed suspect in the back while they are on foot is not and should not be okay. I can understand the guys shooting at him in the car. They were shooting wildly at/around houses and their fellow officers. I'm not surprised about that. Not sure I agree with the second. He already showed his willingness to hit a police car with his car. He's running into private homes. Who knows what he's capable of. Why are we giving deference to the fleeing criminal? edit: actually two police cars it looks like. -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 5, 2016 -> 12:14 PM) We'll see what the video shows. But I'm not sure anything you listed there rises to the level of summary execution being justified, and nor does it matter if he was a "poor blameless victim." "Being a (non-convicted) criminal" isn't grounds for being shot. Unfortunately there's no body cam footage of the actual death shot since that officer's body cam wasn't working. They've posted the video of a dash cam of the squad car of the officer that shoots at O'neil while he's still in the stolen car (I agree that cop was stupid since he was blindly shooting in the direction of homes/other officers), that cop's body cam and then another cop's body cam after it's all over with. https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20160805/so...-authority-says I'm still not seeing it. This dude was a danger to the public. -

So we have a criminal that stole a car, was a danger to the public, was damaging property (hitting a police vehicle and another parked vehicle) and he caused 10? 20? 30? more? cops to chase him through the city, and we're upset because a cop shoots him? Really? Of all of these cop shooting cases, this is the least offensive BY FAR. I'm not sure I even understand what's wrong with him being shot. Why is this asshole some poor blameless victim? That's what you get for being a criminal and for becoming a danger to the public. You get shot. -

Bah, disagree. -
So that was about maximizing his worth right? Doesn't that get him to the 10 year vet limit so when he signs the next max contract he can get more? I think Lowe and Stein worked out the math and the most advantageous deal on Lowe's podcast.

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 5, 2016 -> 10:20 AM) Chicago is a beautiful city with lots of things to do and see and accomodations. Would have been great here. Agreed. It would have been amazing. And it would have been great to get the infrastructure upgrades that now will never happen. -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 5, 2016 -> 10:05 AM) I'm still annoyed that golf is an Olympic sport Why's that? It's good for the game. Non-golf countries are now investing money into it, so new markets are being opened. I think the format is dumb. And I think it's unfortunate that some of the big names won't be there. But that's what happened with tennis too and it's sorta turned a corner. -

QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Aug 5, 2016 -> 02:47 AM) I don't know if I would say Russia had only a few hiccups, but before the games start, all there is to talk about and cover is how the city prepared. Once the games start, it's really all anyone cares about. And if you think about it, who are the people reporting about the various problems (water leaking, rooms not ready, not enough food, etc. etc)? Reporters. Who have to live in it. So of course that's the first wave of stories. Not that it isn't deserved by any means, but Sochi was the same and after the opening ceremony we didn't hear a word about how they weren't prepared. Rio will be the same unless there's a major terrorist attack or criminal attack. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 4, 2016 -> 01:53 PM) This was a great mini-series. I'm on episode 4 and it's been a real struggle. Franco is so, so bad. Which is odd because he can be a decent actor. But for some reason it's just not clicking in this show.

Peaky Blinders would be my recommendation on Netflix. Awesome season 1, better season 2, good but not great season 3. Marco Polo is pretty good and worth it even though it's not anything amazing. On Hulu, Casual is a decent 30 min dramady.

QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 4, 2016 -> 09:40 AM) The Great British Baking Show has a couple of runs on Netflix. Ha, I get sucked into that once in a while on the weekends when WTTW replays them. Totally reminds me of Junkyard Wars (British reality competition show? But with some funny/unique humor? I guess?) and i'm oddly entertained.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 4, 2016 -> 09:14 AM) It's buried pages back at this point, but illinilaw had a very solid response the last time someone tried to say Trump and Clinton were equally bad. here it is: Or more pithily, as conservative author PJ O'Rourke put it: Trump is wrong in ways that are far, far outside of the "normal parameters" of policy disagreement. As someone who's perhaps biggest reservation about Clinton is her hawkishness, I still feel entirely comfortable with her in control of nuclear weapons. Can anyone trying to pull a both-sides argument say the same about Donald "I must respond to every slight, perceived or real, no matter how small for days on end" Trump? I love that normal parameters line.

Also, an underrated movie IMO. I really liked it. I should go back and watch it again and see if it holds up.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 3, 2016 -> 10:24 AM) Zika setting up a potential "Children of Men" scenario here I mean the numbers are still very low and I agree there's a sense of overreaction here. But at the same time, when it comes to kids, that's what we do. Odds are low you'll ever get in a car crash but you still use a car seat and buckle your kids in every time. Odds are low that your infant will succumb to SIDS, but you still make them sleep on their backs and get special, breathable fabrics. At some point, even if the risk is 1%, it's just not going to be worth that awful reality later that you could have prevented it.
