  1. QUOTE (29andPoplar @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 04:21 PM) The whole thing is interesting. You'd have to believe Jordan Danks and the Danks family isn't happy about Jordan lasting until the 7th round. He was still rated very highly going into the draft, in the top 100. Granted he may not be the hot prospect he was coming out of high school but he's still done reasonably well with the Longhorns. The fact he dropped to the 7th round reeks of Boras. A poster here said Baseball America people were told that Boras told all the teams that Jordan Danks would sign only for 1st round money. My belief is that Jordan wants to turn pro and get going. He will likely get more than 7th round money due to the circumstances and this new agent isn't a pushover either. However I expect nothing acrimonious and we should see Jordan in the system, probably playing for Great Falls at some point. I hope people aren't expecting a superstar though. He has some holes in his game he'll need to fix, not unlike most prospects. Regardless, this is good news and it will be good to get an athlete of his caliber into the organization. I think its great news, and I am not joking here, but I have heard some clamor from bar talk people that Crede is about to do the same. Again just people talking who claim they have some knowledge.
  2. QUOTE (29andPoplar @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 03:21 PM) The Sox bullpen will need to do its job. It's a great game to win here, everyone will need to step up and execute. yes and Jenks has been a bit off lately.
  3. QUOTE (29andPoplar @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 03:19 PM) Sounds like another Come To Jesus talk my friend. one toke over the line sweet jesus .
  4. QUOTE (The Beast @ Jun 9, 2008 -> 03:14 PM) If this is your honest opinion of me, thanks. I've umpired for about 10 years now and I know how things are in the game of baseball. I've thrown out several people but what I've learned is that its about the game and you can't let the tools behind the dugouts or even in the dugouts get to you. I guess the way people phrase their criticism towards umpires makes it sound like a criticism of the entire profession. The real heart of the matter is exactly what is bolded. It is what it is. Ross being a good guy is very different than being right. i think your a good guy, your just a bit wrong on this subject.
  5. its time to drop carlos in the order, he is in a funk
  6. The sox better score next inning because the rain is coming, they have about 25 minutes, then it will come down. Getter done boys. As for the Ump, he has been off today, sorry that is just the truth, but thome also swung at ball 4 twice, with the bases loaded which might have changed the game a bit. We need a big run this inning.
  7. this signing actaully just shows how poor our minor league system really is. if you cannot go down and get someone from triple AAA to be a mop guy then your system is hurting. Hopefully this won't hurt us.
  8. QUOTE (29andPoplar @ Jun 7, 2008 -> 07:38 AM) General comments on this draft ... Laumann says they went after potentially high impact guys. Good strategy but now the challenge is to get these kids signed. Doubtful that many of these raw high school types will sign, especially those taken after round 20. They tend to want to go to college and increase their draft status for later. Some curious picks, obviously starting with the GM's son. I love the Danks pick even if he flames out. Danks is a good fit with this organization and it appears he wants to start pro baseball and I believe they'll get him signed in August. Supposedly they targeted the 3rd round pick, 3B Morel. He merits watching closely because if you target a guy who wasn't rated that highly, it's a judge of the scouting staff. Also I find it extremely interesting they'd spend a high draft pick on a 3B. Several CF and SS types were selected which is a good strategy in my book. Those are generally the best athletes and this organization needs good athletes. A few intriguing pitchers, it appears they targeted O'Neill for his ground ball tendancies and possibly he can move up fast. The other thing I noticed with their pitching selections is they took quite a few guys who just had poor seasons. So obviously they see something they like and are looking past stats. Again, a good way to see if these scouts know what they're doing. Also it will be a big test for the development people. It is unreasonable to expect much more than 10% of these picks to work out but this was a critical draft for a weak farm system. Hopefully they did the right things scouting these players and didn't get blinded by the halo effect. Sometimes scouts fall in love with a player and even with a bad year, they see only the positive. All in all, it seems they did the right things in this draft. One thing I did not like though is they took a lot of college seniors which to me screams organizational filler. Should also add, one more thing I did not like - I didn't see them draft any potential leadoff hitters. Possibly some of the high school players have that potential, the speedy kid Thorpe might be one. But really, they should have focused on taking 5-6 of this type of player and hope that one works out. Interesting observations. First i think the morel kid won't amount to anything, but as you point out that is not really the story here. As you know i always look for an angle. It is interesting that they would draft a 3b. Could it be that means they will sign crede, and trade fields? Interesting. maybe thats the angle. I hope they sign danks and you know they will sign KW jr. He stinks by the way. Jordan Danks will rise way quicker than he will, but he (KW) does project as a leadoff type hitter. With danks and him and owens, andersons days are numbered once again. I like the pitchers, if we can get one of them to stick that would be great.
  9. wow they are really talking up beckham. Looks like the sox will break the bank to get him in at least I hope so.
  10. QUOTE (29andPoplar @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 11:58 AM) Yeah but what about those Univ. of Texas women, you know what I'm talkin' about. I am sure one of his moms friends has a daughter.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 11:32 AM) I don't know if anyone has mentioned this or not, but how about a little conspiracy theory based on nothing... Danks told Borass to make an outrageous demand so that the Sox could pick him again, knowing it would scare off the other teams. now that is hilarious! because we know how much boras loves us.
  12. QUOTE (29andPoplar @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 11:13 AM) I looked up a few things on him in the last few minutes. Univ. of Texas shifted him from LF to CF this year. Last year he set a team record by stealing 19 bases in a row, this year he stole about the same amount but was caught a few times. Looks like he had the exact same kind of year at the plate, average slightly lower than last year but not by much. Strikeouts and walks almost exactly even, same as last year. He played in all or most of UT's games this year and last year as well, so he looks to be durable. Not any injury history to speak of other than a fractured ankle his freshman year. Stats don't tell the whole story but if one relies strictly on stats it doesn't appear he progressed much after a very good year last year. Not sure what that's worth or what it means. Boras seems to think it means a whole lot regardless. Obviously the kid wanted to play for Univ. of Texas where his dad and mom graduated from and I'm sure he wants the degree. The Sox should have an advantage here, they know the family and the relationship is good. But I would bet this situation goes all the way up to 8/15. listen once I am a millionaire I could go back and get a degree. Hell half the classes are online now days anyway. This will be about how much the sox want to give the kid,
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 10:57 AM) Even though I don't think he's any special, I love the Danks pick. If nothing else, it will shut up a lot of people on here. this is the second time we drafted him, his agent remains an issue. We will see. I would love to sign him but not for first round money, for third round money would be more like it. He is most likely better than the morel guy whom nobody knows about.
  14. yes nice write up but he certainly cannot draft.
  15. QUOTE (Wanne @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 04:16 PM) Hope Jaff Decker opts to go to school (ASU). ASU is losing a ton this year...besides Wallace, Davis, Paramore, Roling...they always lose half there recruits who this year included Hosmer, Skipworth, Brett Lawrie (and Decker). Is paramore coming out? He could be a good lower round pick, he is a gutsy player and a good leader.
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ May 26, 2008 -> 07:32 PM) Who cares about taking pitches in the 2 hole? We don't have a base stealer at the top of the order, so you're better off having one of your best hitters at the top so they get more plate appearances. actually I think ramirez would be a great number 2 hitter at this moment. He makes good contact, and protects the plate very well. He can bunt, and fouls off pitches adding to long counts.
  17. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:45 PM) You just want the next Brian Anderson, don't you? you obviously remember how much I love andersen! eitherway we get a first baseman.
  18. QUOTE (heirdog @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:42 PM) That explanation would be fine if you said, "I like Wallace" but you said "...Wallace over Smoak?" Can't the same explanation be used for Smoak? Why do you think Wallace will be better? Really guys, I just watched him play thats it. So small sample.
  19. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:40 PM) Somebody- convince me Wallace would be the better pick over Smoak. BTW, Marlins/Rays World Series in 2011. really I don't do it for you? smoak equals travis Lee.
  20. QUOTE (heirdog @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) Why? Is it the thighs? the guy can flat out hit, I truly think he will be a huge offensive threat.
  21. please take wallace over smoak.
  22. QUOTE (Boogua @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) On ESPN 1000 they just had Bruce Levine report that the Sox will take Posey if available. unreal, again who is his agent?
