Nuke, Aren't there volunteers who joined and in 6 minutes or 6 months knew it wasn't for them? You have soldiers now who don't want to be there, who are whining, wanting to go home. The military has a long history of effectively dealing with that. I spent a long time working near Great Lakes NAS, aka Great Mistakes, I know a lot of volunteers did not volunteer, they saw no other way out of their situation. They were told they would "see the world" and found the view from the boiler room looked the same in Hawaii as it did in the Ivory Coast. While volunteers are usually better, the screening process doesn't do a fool proof weeding out of the over the top mercenary types who are likely to get you shot and themselves. I know one young man who is leaving later this month for service. He has repeate,d over and over again, that the greatest thing is to die for your country in war. I tried to explain that the object of war isn't to die for your country but to make the other guy die for his. I fear at some point he's going to committ suicide by enemy fire. I doubt too many draftees would share that feeling.

For everyone who feels this is a "free country" and mandated service would be wrong, I have a question. Do you have any responsibilty to your country? A country that provides your safety, guarantees a safety net of food, clothing, and shelter, provides education opportunities, career opportunities, and more freedoms than have ever been enjoyed before? Is it a one sided arrangement? We all have a *right* to take; but no responsibility to give?

Did you noticfe it's never a beautiful woman? We have a beach area that is popular with nudists. A friend of mine worked for US Fish and Wildlife and it was his job to patrol the area. He concluded that you needed to be 50 pounds overweight to join their group.

Willie, It is difficult making statements that compare Vietnam with any other US war. First off there wasn't a unified America back home, that made a big difference. In Vietnam we had tours of duty. Finish your tour and go home. In WW2 is was go until you get the job done. There is a population of military men and women who joined because of a lack of options in their lives. They aren't as gun ho as you might imagine. They were hoping for 6 years of peace, learn a trade, move on. Vietnam was hampered by political factors we didn't face in Gulf War 1 or 2. The enemy could run into Cambodia and stick their tongues at us and we were ordered not to go after them. We tried to fight the war on two fronts, in SE Asia and at home. We made some stupid decisions to try and get a majority of the American public on the war side. The Soviet Union actually was an empire and we had to be careful of pissing them off enough to send man along with the weapons and strategy aid they were already. THere is a difference between volunteering for a war like happened in droves during WW2 and joining the military to learn computers and finding yourself in a sandstorm 3000 miles from home with women and children trying to either feed you or kill you.

We have always had different laws for different countries. The border economy in Texas is dependent on a flow of goods and people back and forth. Over $12,000,0000 was spent by Mexican nationals with their American Express cards in McAllen last year. The cash trade is multiple times that. With a closed or restricted border a thriving economy of 500,000 US and over a million Mexicans would turn to depression levels in months. I've had the pleasure to meet many individuals who worked as migrants growing up. If you are a farmer and need 100 individuals to work for 2 or 3 weeks per year, where are you going to find them? Will people quit there regular jobs to earn minimum wage for two weeks? Will someone willingly travel for 5 or 6 months following the crops, living in cars or poor provided housing? A big misconception is these individuals commit a lot of crimes. Not even close to true. They desperately do not want to be deported. THey risked their lives literally to get here. They get screwed by bosses that don't pay them full price. Pay double and triple grocery store prices for food from bad owners, and get taken advantage of in other ways. We worry about poor Mexicans coming and working in our restaurants, landscapping companies, packing houses, and others menial jobs. How about the thousands of high tech jobs being moved to China, Malasia, etc.? We allow Canadians to come in with a smile and a wave for 6 months.

Ireland made some great economic strides the past 15 years. The engine was, in many peoples opinion, the apprenticeship style of education that was in place. I worked on a multi million dollar apprenticeship program for the Rio Grande Valley. It's amazing how cost effective this education model is.
