Sox trade Addison Reed to Diamondbacks for 3b Matt Davidson

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 01:17 PM) Jim Callis @jimcallisMLB 34m Davidson. Worried about Olt. @Arm_Side_Run: offhand question, but would you rather have Olt or Davidson, and by what margin? #WhiteSox #Cubs suck it Cubs -
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 12:14 PM) I use facebook to talk s*** to people primarily. I'm what we call a troll. I'll occasionally post random articles and such but I'm a very minor user needless to say. I want to delete it but I'm sure people would have a hissy fit about it. All I generally do is make fun of people and try to be a smart ass. If I am doing something I feel is legitimately cool, I'll update facebook about it. About once every 3 months or so I'll go on a soapbox.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 12:05 PM) How about the one word "sad" "confused", and then the people telling them its ok or they will get through it or asking them whats wrong. If you need that much attention on the internet you need to make more friends. "I'm always there for you!" How much you wanna bet that if you actually called, those people would be too busy or ignore the call. I am friends with a guy who is connected to like a $10 million fraud scheme and he is constantly talking about how he wants to be the mayor of Omaha and how he's representing his own business and whatever else. Meanwhile, he is the only student body president to ever be impeached. He had some 400+ unaccounted for miles on a state vehicle.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 11:56 AM) Who are these upgrades you write of? Point is, if the current core flops these "upgrades" aren't going to win them anything. If 3 of the 4 work out, you then have money to replace the one that does not. If none of them do, then you're f***ed anyways.

I love when people are super passive aggressive on facebook. I didn't see it, but there was apparently a girl who lives with her fiancee and no one else, and she said something like "I hate when the people you live with are so grumpy and won't talk." It's like b****, we know who you're talking about, so why don't you go tell him this s*** yourself? Nobody gives a f***. And then all the lemmings are like "OH HANG IN THERE DEAR, YOU'LL GET THROUGH THIS!" I so want to just b**** these people out and cuss up and down, but I never have the nerve to do so when I'm not masked by a vail of anonymity.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 10:40 AM) When they have no idea the consequences? Smart. Then I may as well keep them out of every competitive sport, right? You can get hit by line drives in baseballs, get undercut and crack your head open in basketball, get cut or slip and fall in hockey, drown in swimming...may as well relegate him to a life of video games. If my future child is interested in playing a sport, I will let them. If they aren't, I'm not going to make them play anything.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 10:35 AM) If not Tanaka, who better to spend their money on over the next 6 years? I think it's a longshot they win the bidding, but they have the resources to make a competitive offer. I have no problem with them pursuing Tanaka, but this is absolutely the worst argument for it. You simply never know what need might emerge. Maybe Davidson busts and David Wright or Evan Longoria become available for trade. Maybe they develop the assets and save the money to pursue a player like Mike Trout or Bryce Harper. Maybe whoever they draft 3rd this year is extended in 2016 because he's that good. You simply don't know what opportunities will present themself, so spending just to spend is an absolutely terrible philosophy that gets teams in all kinds of trouble.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 10:13 AM) Ya the "would you let your kids play football" argument is an interesting one. If I ever had kids(don't worry world, not happening), I'm not sure where I'd fall on that. I will let them do what they want.
-
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 08:39 AM) Because even if you assume 3b or cf or whatever is take. Up for 5 years there's always a possibility that Eaton or Davidson bust. It'd be silly to not take a guy that you believe is the best player available because you think you have those spots filled, especially when you're probably looking 2-3 years down the road. If the Sox had David Price, Chris Sale, and Carlos Rodon, I don't think people would say "the Sox need to diversify their rotation because you can't have 3 lefties with mid 90s fastballs and good sliders." I think they'd say "they have the best 1-2-3 in the league." In the best case scenario, you can trade one of those guys for a prospect at another position of need.
-
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 02:04 AM) I disagree. I think you draft for need when there is no consensus pick. If a consensus top 5 pick falls to pick 20, then you go ahead and take him. But if you are the #3 pick and mock drafts have 3-4 different names going there, you can pick based on position if your scouting reports have them all going that high. I mean, it's hard to compare a pitcher to a 1B, for instance. I completely disagree with this. If you have a stacked pitching staff and a mediocre to bad offense, and you have Corey Curveball, a great starting pitcher, rated higher than Hank Homer, a power hitter outfielder, then you take Corey Curveball. Every time.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 04:58 PM) Japan must not have worked out too well. Only pitched 3 games there. He was OK. http://bis.npb.or.jp/eng/players/83385135.html He was awful in Boston's system last year. He is essentially Dylan Axelrod.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 12:09 AM) Hardly surprised though. He signed here thinking that he was coming on to a contender and simply filling Jim Thome's spot perfectly. Now, a big reason as to why that contender has fallen apart was because of his God awful 2011 season, but no one with an ounce of competitiveness (especially like Dunn, who has never made the playoffs I think) would want to be on a crappy team with no real chance of contention, no matter how much they're getting paid. Honestly, I think this has less to do with it than the sheer fact that the fans of Chicago do not like him. He is booed constantly, even though he's doing about what would be expected of him. He is probably not comfortable walking around town simply because people will recognize him and berate him. He is "the guy," so people blame the Sox failure on him. If he is playing in Texas, he is, at the very least, close to home.

Sox trade Addison Reed to Diamondbacks for 3b Matt Davidson

QUOTE (oldsox @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 08:37 PM) I know we didn't give Reed away for free, Vance. That's why we made the trade. No one knows more about Davidson that Dbacks; they got a real good look at him and made the trade. We'll all have a good idea by mid season. Until then, it will be interesting. I hope he starts the season with Sox and plays every day. Reed will prob do well at Ariz regardless. /DBacks fan I know we didn't give Davidson away for free, Vance. That's why we made the trade. No one knows more about Reed than the White Sox; they got a real good look at him and made the trade. We'll all have a good idea by mid season. Until then, it will be interesting. Frankly, unless something becomes available at a relatively decent price, and given the circumstances of the current team, I have no problem going to Spring Training with Flowers, Phegley, Nieto, and Gimenez battling it out for two spots. I ultimately believe Phegley and Nieto will win out. Gimenez is on a minor league deal, so no big deal. Flowers has to clear waivers but, as I understand, cannot refuse an assignment to the minors due to his lack of service time. He will murder AAA pitching for a while.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 04:29 PM) Who hits from the left side if Hahn trades Dunn, De Aza, and Gillespie? Eaton who you are hitting at the top of the order and who? I really don't think it matters. They can pick up guys in the future. Unless they are actively seeking to compete this year, you just roll with what you have. Come 2015, who is going to be hitting from the left side? Because I sure as hell don't know. -
2013-14 off season player movement thread

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 02:13 PM) ChiTribSports @ChiTribSports 9m Orioles agree to two-year, $15 million deal with free-agent closer Grant Balfour, source says http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/break...story?track=rss … That is phenomenal value. So the Orioles trade Jim Johnson to Oakland for a warm body, and then they sign Oakland's old closer for $7.5 mill a year for 2 years. I really like it. -
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 04:32 PM) It was a joke. Steve Adams at MLBTR does live chats every now and then. A user with the name "Rick Hahn" asked those two questions. Adams said De Aza has more value, because Viciedo is a poor mans Mark Trumbo. Adam also said the SOX would have to eat $10M to move Dunn. Just some dudes opinion. I agree with him, or he agrees with me, or we agree with each other. The De Aza thing is pretty easy to deduce - better, more versatile player at this point - while I figured the $10 mill because teams will likely only want to pay Dunn about $5 mill at most, and that's without giving anything up.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 04:11 PM) I mean, as with Grandal, acquiring him is on a case-by-case basis. D'Arnaud has a plus arm and supposedly can really cut it behind the plate. I think Grandal has a much better chance of being an asset as a hitter but D'Arnaud is the superior defender. I remember D'Arnaud had one of the highest CS% in the minors. On the offense side of things, Grandal brings power potential and on base skills and D'Arnaud brings a strong hit tool. In my opinion Grandal has a much higher ceiling as a hitter because D'Arnaud may not have the plate discipline to be as strong a hitter. Acceptable but nothing out of this world. In essence, I'd be in favor of acquiring either as they're both young, catching talent that bring their own set of skills. Curious to why you choose D'Arnaud specifically? Because I want you to compare D'Arnaud's numbers in AAA and the majors to Josh Phegley's.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 04:04 PM) I don't know why you keep saying Alonzo unless you have a weird love for Yonder Alonzo. I've almost done it too. You think Yasmani and you get lazy and it comes out as Yonser, and Yonser Grandal isn't right, but Yonser Alonso is.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 03:56 PM) What is Chris Widger up to? "He is currently the pitching coach for the Camden Riversharks in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Widger -
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 03:46 PM) Aside from acquiring the cancer that was an active Barry Bonds, I agree on every point. Wite saying Alonso would post a .300 OBP is way off. That's why I like Alonso because his basement is better than anything we have. If he comes here and underperforms he'd still hit .250/.330 with decent power. There is no way you can go from an OBP of .380 in your first 334 PAs in the bigs to regressing to .300. At every level and phase of Alonso's career he has shown a propensity to get on base. If the Sox had the chance to acquire Travis D'Arnaud, would you do that?

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 03:34 PM) No it's not. Zach Stewart was a legitimate prospect who fell off & never made it. Rienzo is far lesser than he was. Lilli was at least a somewhat decent MLB UT guy whereas Sanchez - although he would have greater value than Lilli at the time - is coming off a down season in AAA. It's pretty close. We're not getting anything out of Rienzo dude, and Sanchez is going to have to show someone something to regain value. Stewart had proven he couldn't strike people out. Rienzo can do that. Stewart had proven to be a mediocre pitcher in the high minors. Rienzo has proven to be good, if somewhat wild. The Sox also have more control of Rienzo than they did Stewart and are also not in a position to be trading excess pitching at this moment. Lillibridge was 28, out of options, hitting .175/.232/.190/.422 at the time of the trade, and he wasn't playing. Carlos Sanchez turns 22 on June 29th of next year, already has about a year and a half of experience at AAA, and still has 3 options. The Sox also were running out Brent Morel and Orlando Hudson at 3B. Kevin Youkilis provided an immediate upgrade for a team in the playoff hunt. The 2014 White Sox are in the process of a retooling/rebuilding/transition where they need all the young, cost controlled players they can, rather than trading them for catchers coming off significant injuries who have been connected to PEDs. I also have yet to hear why the Padres would accept that or any of these deals. If Grandal is so good, why would they sell so low on him? You guys have said yourselves Hedges is not ready yet. None of it really makes sense. If the Sox acquire him, they are paying a lot for an incredible risk, while at the same time the Padres are selling low for an extremely talented ball player whom they have room for on the roster.

QUOTE (midway @ Dec 17, 2013 -> 03:30 PM) In the Chat at MLBTraderumors.com Rick Hahn asked 2 questions: 1. Who will get me the best trade value for a catcher, DeAza or Viciedo? Answer was: DeAza 2. If I trade Dunn how much of his contract will I have to eat? Answer: 10mil So far I love the moves Hahn has made, but don't think he is done yet. uhhhhh, wha?
