  1. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 11:12 AM) Lobaton would be a safe pickup. Hopefully that's still in play. I still think the Sox picking up about $6 mill of Keppinger's salary and sendnig him to Tampa for Lobaton makes a ton of sense.
  2. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 11:10 AM) She'll sniff this out and threaten me for sure. If I breath a word of "break" she'll come back with it's over or something like that. She's super Disney about relationships. Then let it be over. Sounds like a bit of a drama queen.
  3. I think you are buying incredibly high on Castro right now. His K% increased like crazy, yet somehow he hit 20 points better. I think he's more of a .250/.325/.425 kind of guy, which is still very valuable out of the catcher's position, but I'd rather not giving up Quintana for that. I've just soured on the idea of acquiring a catcher all. If you can get one cheap, then sure, go for it. Otherwise, I think you just stick with what you have, bring in a couple other smaller pieces for competition purposes.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 11:06 AM) Rick said even the meetings that used to be done face to face in a hotel room during the Winter Meetings are mostly done over the phone. There was that picture of the 3 GMs in a room. I don't know if they were in the same room when the deal got done or they met to go to their press conference or what. They probably aren't going to get rid of them any time soon, but for deals-sake, it appears they don't make much of a difference anymore. Obviously there are other aspects to the meetings that most fans don't care much about. Last Tuesday or whatever was one of the busiest days I've ever remembered in an offseason.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 10:53 AM) Even in the modern age, there is nothing that equates to pressing the flesh. thats what she said
  6. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 11:02 AM) The way catcher is, you could play Flowers, hope for an early season hot streak...and actually get something for him. A little something at least. The minor league numbers being what they are, you can surely sell someone on a potential light switch flip having happened. That is, if you are fine with 2014 being experimental jazz He's making $950K this year. You could trade him now for a journeyman AAA guy (or whatever).
  7. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 10:50 AM) No we don't. She lives with her parents. We have plans to move in together next year. Take a break. 1 week, 2 week, whatever, go without contact for a period of time and see how you feel afterwards (aside from the intial blow of not being with her). Even just that amount of time will give you an idea as to what the right decision is. Sometimes people are the way they are because they lack the motivation. I'm sure she still cares a great deal about you, but maybe the thought of losing you will trigger the idea that maybe she should do something more to support you trying to lose weight and look good. Maybe she starts preparing meals or buying and eating more nutritiously or going to the gym with you now and then, and in turn maybe she finds that she really likes it. You might find some things you can change too. And then maybe not, and you find that being without her is better and more conducive to improving yourself.
  8. That's why trading prospects for short term stopgaps is silly too. If the Sox acquire a guy like Jose Lobaton, there is absolutely no need to give up someone younger than, say, 24 or 25.
  9. I think the Winter Meetings still happen because it's easier to network, establishing and maintaining relationships with teams. Having a few drinks, shooting the s***, getting on each other's good sides so it's easier to negotiate and work together. It's also easier to work the 3-team deals like we saw, because you can get all 3 guys in the same room.
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 10:27 AM) It wasn't that long ago that Montero was a huge prize. What a bust, and he can't catch. The Mariners are the prime example of why trading Chris Sale is so crazy. Over the past decade, they've had Olivo, Reed, Morse, Ackley, Smoak, Montero, and a ton of others come up and bust.
  11. Pettie, how long have you been dating? My assumption is that you two live together as well.
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 09:45 AM) I dunno about this, Wite...I agree that we might all like our significant others to value their health and appearance, but I don't know if "the least" they could do is to accompany us to the gym a few times a week. What if she gardened a lot in the interest of growing produce to contribute to a healthy diet...would it be "the least" he could do to be out there with her three times a week planting tomatoes? I know I'd be like, yeah, you have fun with that Honey That's true, but doing something at least to show support. You get my drift. So long as she's not eating Taco Bell and McDonalds in front of him and gloating about it. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 10:11 AM) Seriously? My biggest concern would be the fall out. A lot of friends and family have met this girl and I the same of hers. To break it off over something like this, I'm sure I'd be judged to kingdom come (from my family too). I don't want to force her but I also feel myself not being attracted to her anymore. I probably just need to man up and get it over with but I just feel like I would be a s***ty person for doing this. My ex met my extended family and they all loved her, and I met her grandma and obviously her parents and siblings and they all liked me quite a bit, and we had a falling out because I was nodding off in a theatre literature class (incredibly far removed from my minor study in English because we talked so much more about the dramatic effects of these plays rather than the actual literature itself) because I was taking 18 credits, in two on campus organizations (with a leadership role in 1 of them), working part-time, meeting with multiple groups for class projects throughout the week, and figuring out plans of what do to after graduation, all the while taking at least an hour or 2 out of my day to catch up with her (as she had graduated and moved to Seattle in September of that year). Every day I was generally up and busy from either 7:30 or 9:30 (depending on the day) until 1 or 2 AM every day. Getting more than 6 hours a sleep per day was a challenge, so yes, I was tired and bored in a class where all we did was take notes and talk about things I was not particularly interested in. We'd had other problems before that too, but that was the straw that broke the camel's back. Small things matter.
  13. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 10:10 AM) Ackley, Smoak, and Montero for Beckham, Viceido and Flowers. Busts for busts. Done deal Ick. Beckham's better than Ackley, Viciedo is better than Smoak. Montero is better than Flowers and probably has the highest ceiling of them all, but I don't want any of those guys.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 09:27 AM) Comcast SportsNet ‏@CSNPhilly 4m The Phillies have agreed to a deal with starting pitcher Roberto Hernandez, according to a source: http://ow.ly/rHEMo Fauxsto Carmona
  15. QUOTE (Jillian Michaels' Abs @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 09:38 AM) If the Sox acquire a legit major league catcher (Castro, etc) then Flowers and Phegley have to know they are ticketed for AAA. So assue the Sox do acquire Castro (highly unlikely, but).. MLB: Castro Nieto AAA: Flowers Phegley Gimenez Narvaez The Sox would have to give up Quintana to get Castro. That's not going to happen. I think they are going to try and find cheap, long term options at catcher this year. If they appear close to competing next year, I think they'll try and find a big upgrade at that point.
  16. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 09:18 AM) Yeah I know it's people's right to do what they want. I'm really starting to lose interest in her. I know, I know I'm shallow but we like what we like. Really, I don't think that's shallow. You are trying to get in better shape, look better, and take care of yourself. The least she could do is go to the gym with you a couple times a week and do a mile or two on the treadmill/eliptical/bike to show that she is supporting you doing that. Without trying to get too preachy, we go through a lot of difficult endeavors in life, and we need those closest to us to offer support. If it's not there, it's time to find different avenues to try and get that support.
  17. QUOTE (SoxnGiants @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 09:23 AM) Ahh, the classic "poor man's" Willie Mays Hayes You may run like Hayes but you hit like s***
  18. Ruggiano was terrible last year and is going to be 32 next year. His amazing 2012 was aided by a .401 BABIP. That came crashing down last year, down to .260. He's career BABIP is .310, so I think you can probably expect his career splits - .251/.315/.432. And again, he's 32 and the Marlins are terrible, so if they can get a guy in Bogusevic who is younger in general, they may as well try it. I like Bogusevic's power too. Frankly, I think it's just a fair trade, maybe slightly favoring the Marlins. It's nice for the Cubs because they picked up Bogusevic for nothing.
  19. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 09:11 AM) Yeah I'm really trying not to be a dick. I'm trying to lead by example, hit the gym, eat right, etc... My friggin' gf will not go the f***ing gym. Arggggghhh! I need to push the envelope but this is a delicate topic. Any suggestions? You can be stern with her, but if she isn't going to go to the gym, she's not going to go to the gym.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 09:06 AM) Elmore or Eaton? Elmore. Haven't looked at Eaton yet, I just assume he looks exactly like Tony Gwynn at the plate and Kenny Lofton on the base paths.
  21. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 09:09 AM) So lemme see if I got this right . Nieto who was 23 in A+ ball has to make the Sox 25 man roster or else they send him back to the Nats ? Sems highly unlikely since Phegs and Flowers both hit AAA pitching pretty well and Nieto hasnt even sniffed that level yet. And it is highly unlikely. The Sox like his talent though, and if the Nats didn't believe highly enough in him to promote him to AA, it's certainly possible that the Sox will trade someone or send some cash to retain the rights to him. If not, they send him back and they're out $25K, which is the same as about 10-14 days worth of work for a guy making the major league minimum. There is no risk to this move whatsoever.
  22. I wish doctors still prescribed fen-phen.
  23. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 09:02 AM) Will that be it for the Winter Mettings dealings? Don't teams typically leave after the Rule V draft? Some will, some will stick around for a while longer, depends on flight times I suppose. Everyone will be back in their home cities tomorrow night.
  24. Now that I think about it, he looks A LOT like Jayson Nix at the plate.
  25. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 08:53 AM) Giants get Morse, they gone. Reds & who else is left? Do the A's need an OF? DeAza seems like a Beane type of target. Worst case scenario, the Sox keep all 4 and increase their depth on the bench. I don't see that happening, but that's not a bad worst case scenario.
