Sox acquire Adam Eaton from ARZ, deal Santiago, Jacobs

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 03:16 PM) So right now we are looking at Sale-Quintana-Johnson-Danks- Rienzo?? Paulino?? I would rather sign someone better then Danks or Johnson to plug into the rotation Danks is a 3-4 WAR pitcher if he's healthy and producing. He's a risk, which is why he's slotted #4. Johnson showed good command, strike out ability, and velocity. He's going to be rough around the edges, but he's a definite possibility to be a 3-4 WAR pitcher too. -

QUOTE (beautox @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 03:12 PM) I like this trade, but i feel they should've been able to get a bit more because pitching is such a premium. During the trade deadline i was hoping the sox would acquire Eaton, he has the tools to be a 4WAR player year in and year out think Denard Span in '09 .311/.392/.415 with average to slightly above average defense in CF while stealing 20 Bags. A future core of him and Semien excites me tremendously. L Eaton CF R Semien 2B L De Aza LF R Abreu 1B R Garcia RF L Dunn DH R Phegley L Gillaspie 3B R Ramirez SS We're in a rebuild might as well take a full season to see what we have in Gillaspie and Phegley. I still think Conor can develop into a 2 win player at 3B and phegley could very well develop into a 1-1.5 war player. Frankly, I no longer believe pitching is that big of a premium anymore. The average ERA for the MLB last year was 3.87. I fully believe that a guy like Eaton, who is hopefully something like a .300/.360/.440 player for the Sox (or something in those whereabouts) is far more valuable than a mid 3's ERA starter. -

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 03:04 PM) I feel like we need to sign a decent right handed starter who can be a #4 for us. Not sure if Paulino is that Erik Johnson sure can. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 02:59 PM) While also having to build his stamina during the year because of the dumb decision by the Sox heading into the season? Santiago has a pretty high ceiling, IMO. A much higher ceiling than the likes of Rienzo. I agree. I think Rienzo is a #4-5 or a bullpen piece at his ceiling. I don't see any way he starts the year in the majors unless Erik Johnson looks terrible or Paulino isn't ready. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 02:54 PM) Seems premature to say that, as he could easily classify as a #2 if he makes the same leap Quintana did. My problem with that is that Quintana made the leap as a 23 year old. Santiago is going to be 26 next year and hasn't had the break through yet. -
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 02:53 PM) It really hinges around the dbacks giving up Bradley. If so they have enough workable pieces to get a deal done. Same goes for Seattle and Walker. I agree. I'd still put it at about 1:1000, but I'm telling you there's a chance.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 02:09 PM) Take out Beck? More doable for Sox? Or is he that bad defensively? I haven't seen him, but even with a .270/.325/.490 season, he was only worth like 1.6 WAR. UZR was like -15. He's really bad. Again, he can probably improve, but he was not good last year. He's got an incredibly high ceiling, so in that sense he's worth a bit more just to gamble, but I'm not overly optimistic.

May as well keep it open. Arizona still has a ton of prospects and they always made the most sense to begin with.

In 2007-08, the White Sox traded Chris Carter to Arizona for Carlos Quentin. Chris Carter was then later involved in a package to Oakland that sent Dan Haren to Arizona. It was essentially a three way trade of Chris Carter to Oakland, a bunch of other pieces to Oakland, Carlos Quentin to the White Sox, and Dan Haren to Arizona. In 2013-14, the White Sox traded Hector Santiago to LAA, but you could essentially argue that they traded Hector Santiago to Arizona for Adam Eaton. Santiago and Skaggs were traded to LAA for Mark Trumbo and a couple of prospects. In both cases, they bought low on otherwise highly rated Arizona outfield prospects. I think they believe that Arizona is good at developing outfielders. -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 01:59 PM) Bro, he's not Grady Sizemore. Meanwhile... TUESDAY: A team that spoke to the Phillies about Brown informed ESPN's Jayson Stark that Philadelphia doesn't sound enthused about the idea of moving Brown and is looking for two to three young players in return (Twitter link) MONDAY: The Phillies are "actively shopping" Domonic Brown with an eye toward selling high on him in an effort to acquire controllable young pitching, reports Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter). Dayan, Beck, Rienzo/Snodgress, and Hawkins? Could that be a thing? I don't think you want that to be a thing.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 01:47 PM) They re-signed him several times, paying him over $81 million in his career when his xFIP was no better than what it was his final season with the team. Yes they did, because some guys typically outperform their FIP and xFIP numbers, while others typically underperform those numbers. Javy Vazquez was terrible about it. Still, they're pretty accurate in portraying pitchers' talent. Maybe Santiago is a guy that will ultimately outperform those numbers. I don't believe we have enough of a sample size to determine that yet. -

LOL, Throw in Dunn and get LAA to throw in about $180 million and the Sox can take on Pujols, sure. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 01:34 PM) I'll be the first to admit I don't follow FIP and xFIP. And that's fine, I have no problem with that. They aren't the holy grail either. I think Santiago can certainly improve as a starter and his game will play much better in LA than it did and does here, but to me I think he will ultimately be more of a #3/4 rather than a #2/3. We will see though. I really like Eaton though and think he is going to be a nice addition. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 01:25 PM) 3.56 ERA with 8.4 K/9IP is pretty good I know you guys hate it and it's going to do nothing to change your mind, but his FIPs and xFIPs have been in the 4.4-4.7 range. He walks too many guys, doesn't throw enough ground balls, doesn't work deep into games, and was either really lucky/good/both about stranding runners. -
QUOTE (dayan024 @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:23 PM) Chris Cotillo @ChrisCotillo 59s Howie Kendrick is NOT involved in the deal, reports @JeffFletcherOCR and @Alden_Gonzalez. Deal is getting close. Sox need more to include another prospect. Wonder who it could be?
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:22 PM) What's Kendricks contract? $9.35 mill this year, $9.5 mill next year. About the price you should want to pay for a 2 WAR player.

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:21 PM) That doesn't even really matter. Hector could have made 30 starts and you still wouldn't look at him and be able to say with a high degree of certainty that he is a 190+ IP starter. You could barely say with any certainty that he's a 170 inning starter, considering he average 5.2 IP per start this year. He's a good pitcher and I like him, but he's not a good fit for USCF, not with a GB:FB of -

QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:10 PM) This is just strange Not really, there's been one guy running with this Uribe to the White Sox thing and people have been retweeting him. Like I said, I think it's agent driven info to try and get LA to commit a 2nd year to Uribe. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:10 PM) That's just dumb You don't know everything that's coming back, nor the "prospect" involved. Nothing is dumb yet.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:07 PM) Saying Santiago "might stick" as a starter is laughable at this point. Using 3 lefties in our current rotation as a reason behind this trade even more so. Saying he could either take a step forward with his control, command, and ability to throw groundballs is just as far fetched. I really like Santiago, but he is probably the most realistic piece the Sox can deal. -

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 12:05 PM) Now hearing they're pushing for Quintana instead? I guess he wont be hanging out at that Colombian restaurant in Rogers Park anymore... If they are pushing for Quintana, I imagine the Sox are going to require a ton more or they'll flat out drop out of negotiations. That've been pretty blatant about their desire to keep Quintana. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 10, 2013 -> 11:58 AM) He has a near elite K rate and an ERA of 3.30 in his season's worth of starts so far. This after being completely misused and jerked around by the organization. If people aren't touting his ceiling they should be, because he's shown it to be pretty high. He also walks 4.5 guys per 9, doesn't last long when he starts because he's inefficient, and he throws a lot of flyballs. He has a lot of talent, but also has a lot to work on too.
