  1. QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 03:36 PM) I personally think it will be a mistake to trade Viciedo. Last year was his first full time season and it was a success in my eyes. He had his struggles but the guy just has too much going for him to trade in his sophomore year. For me, you don't even consider trading him until the 2014 off-season. It's still my contention and hope that he becomes one of the best 5 hole hitters in the league. He's got talent but he's a long, long ways away. You look for progress from a guy like Viciedo throughout the year. For Viciedo, he basically had an incredible May, hit for power in September, struck out a slightly lower rate in the second half(23.9% to 20.1%), and walked incrementally more in the second half (4.9% to 5.4%...he literally walked the same amount of times, just in 24 fewer plate appearances). There's hope, but if you can capitalize on his value, I would do so.
  2. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 02:45 PM) Very close to Chaveztalk.com again, dammit Once again as the dominoes start to fall how excited will everyone be that things are finally happening? Slightly moreso than yesterday. The amount isn't so absurd that, if a better option arises or his play falls off, that he still can't be useful as a lefty masher in a utility role.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 01:19 PM) Some people buy into the Verducci effect, some don't. I would have to imagine Peavy, Sale, and Quintana are at the top of that list for 2013. Sale and Quintana for sure, Peavy doesn't technically qualify because of his age.
  4. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 02:02 PM) White Sox talked with Chavez before signing Kepp, Chavy preferred Arizona. per DKnobler. From California, doesn't surprise me at all. Glad they kicked the tires on it.
  5. My feeling for this is similar to the feeling I had for the Iguchi signing. Nothing special, but it should provide an upgrade or atleast a constant presence at a spot the Sox have struggled at previously.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 12:09 PM) Like was stated above, one of the studs goes down, chances are you aren't winning anyways. Trade Floyd, maybe BMac gets signed, probably not, but in a month or so, there will be a lot of guys in the bargain bin looking for jobs. There's a decent chance one of them is serviceable in cases your #4 or #5 can't handle it. I agree completely with this, and I really think the world of Gavin Floyd's talent. He just doesn't make sense at this point.
  7. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 11:46 AM) Hey, don't get into the middle of this. Arguing with Reddy is like arguing with Y2HH. We are quite similar in this regard. And it's a challenge and fun. Also, to touch on your points...some of what you said I agree with, but not all. There are people that can do everything right -- by choice -- and still die of lung cancer. That has nothing to do with self control. Haha, I suppose you're right. I was implying the smoking thing, but Joe Perfect breathing in asbestos is no fault of his own.
  8. QUOTE (balfanman @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 12:03 PM) Okay, now you got my mind working (my boss has been trying to for years now), who did we trade Garland for again? Orlando Cabrera
  9. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 11:55 AM) I'll be interested to see what return would be for Floyd. For me to say 'dont trade Gavin' seems to be becoming a more and more outsider opinion. I don't totally see why. Between Sale, Peavy and Danks..injury is (as is the case with everyone) a concern. And at the end of the rotation, there's suckage potential. Again though, want to see what the return will be. If Sale or Peavy get seriously hurt, I don't think the Sox stand much of a chance anyways.
  10. To be fair, you can say lack of self-control leads to all self-inflicting problems in life. Why did he die of lung cancer? Lack of self-control. Why did he cheat on his wife? Lack of control. Why did the guy murder his family? Lack of self-control. You're not wrong, but there are underlying reasons for the lack of self-control. Lack of self-control itself is very vague and can be triggered for any number of reasons. Sometimes it's a lack of communication, sometimes it's boredom, sometimes it's because a guy is too horny to control himself. You're both right...again. (I feel like most arguments end this way)
  11. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 11:24 AM) See, now this move would be a net negative. Rookie SS, bad second baseman, bad 3rd baseman vs. Rookie 2nd baseman, and good SS, bad 3rd baseman Depends on who else you bring in and what Ramirez is dealt for. I tend to agree, but there are situations where I could see it working.
  12. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 10:20 AM) Hmm...you may be right, but I just feel like last year showed us a few things about Youk. Boston fans painted him as hopelessly done, but it is always interesting to me when I see a statistical spike FOLLOWING something that could've been a source of motivation. Motivation is talked about endlessly in the abstract, but if a player responds after a career-testing event...it gives you some evidence he may have a fair amount left. And in this, I consider his injuries in BOS, not just Valentine. That's the thing, he was still far, far below his career averages even after getting traded and seeing that spike. .236/.346/.425/.771 with the White Sox .283/.384/.482/.867 for his career He's going to be 34 next season, has a bit of a bum back, and fell off big time last year. I think he's a bigger risk than people tend to realize.
  13. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 10:09 AM) I will say this-- I'd rather spend a million on someone like JH and platoon if I'm not totally confident in paying one of these other options. Much like when we signed Orlando Hudson....the deal was so low risk that it simply acted as a placeholder til something better (Youk) made itself available to us. Were we to overpay for something very mediocre right now, I'd be sadder. Which is the exact reason I actually hope they stay away from Youkilis.
  14. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 10:04 AM) Chavez vs. RHP, Morel vs. LHP? (Chavez can't hit lefties at all) Yes. It's not ideal, but nothing is. I believe it's the best choice the Sox have.
  15. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 09:48 AM) I dont trust his ability to remain healthy. The yankees were pretty good about protecting him and giving him days off and such. I have a feeling if he comes to the Sox, there will be little platoon because of the dropoff from him to Morel, and this will lead to a lot of the problems that derailed his career. He is absolutely terrible against left handers (.382 OPS last year, .609 in 2011, .688 for his career) so playing him against LHP just simply isn't a good option. I think that getting Brent focused on just hitting lefties initially while slowly expanding his role over the course of a season will improve him as a hitter as well. Neither Youkilis nor Keppinger have been shining examples of health over the years (and Keppinger isn't a great bat to begin with, though, as I mentioned previously, I do like him), and an injury is going to kill the chances to win anyways. You are taking a bigger risk with Chavez than you are Youkilis or Keppinger, but the reward is also far greater and at the end of the day, I feel like Chavez gives the Sox the best chance to win out of all the options, and I feel he is going to come the cheapest as well.
  16. I prefer Chavez over them all, as he gives you the best chance to win.
  17. QUOTE (spiderman @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 09:19 AM) Only rumors out there seem to have them considering the horrible list of available 3B options on the open market. They've been connected with McCarthy and Adams as well
  18. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 09:14 AM) I think "not that strong" was in reference to his defense Correct, I actually really like Keppinger as a hitter
  19. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 09:04 AM) Keppinger is a nice piece. If they want to give Morel a shot again, Keppinger takes the Lillibridge role but he could also replace Morel. If Keppinger is brought in, he will take the role of Morel, and, if anything, Morel will take on the Lillibridge role.
  20. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 08:52 AM) Yeah, not a bunch of power but seems like he can hit okay. Anyone know about his defense? Not that strong
  21. QUOTE (forrestg @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 08:36 AM) Bobby jenks came to the soxfrom the angels I believe the results could be made with Reckling. Sure, if you want to. Or you can just expect him to do nothing and be happy with anything more.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 08:33 AM) Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS #Rangers battling with #Dodgers in big-bucks showdown for Zack Greinke. bidding in $160M range. Jesus
  23. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 09:33 PM) So it's looking like it will be difficult to find a LH hitting 3B and outside of an AJ return it looks like this lineup might have a grand total of 2 LH hitters, and the both hit high in the lineup. Does that happen a lot? Yes The White Sox had 3 in 2005, but had Thomas been healthy all year, he would have replaced Everett
  24. QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 09:21 PM) As anti as I am about them getting in, I would like to see a display of the steroid era or even expanded to notorious players. Don't ignore it, acknowledge it. Mention the players and their accomplishments. It would be an exhibit, but the players would not be HoF members. Would the pro Rose and Bond find that acceptable? I bet the pro-Bonds and Clemens would find this acceptable, but the pro-Rose would ask why the hell it would matter.
  25. QUOTE (YASNY @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 02:21 AM) I don't think we've seen the real Brett either. ? It is Brent Morel
