2012-2013 Sox off season Catch-All thread
witesoxfan replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Jake Peavy, Chris Sale, John Danks, Gavin Floyd, Jose Quintana, Hector Santiago, Simon Castro, Dylan Axelrod, Andre Rienzo, Nestor Molina (if you really want to stretch). There is SP depth. It's not all good, but there is depth. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 10, 2012 -> 02:01 PM) How many homers did he hit against us? I remember at least 3. pissed me off. You literally remember every single homer he hit against the Sox -
QUOTE (The Gooch @ Dec 10, 2012 -> 01:01 PM) I don't think you can play a division opponent in the Wild card round... Yes you can. It's simply a matchup of seeds. 3-6 and 4-5

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2012 -> 12:20 PM) The wierd thing is...I agree with you...and yet, in last year's statistics...the lineup was the one thing that was fine, scored the 4th most runs in the AL, and the bullpen and the starters were comparatively weaker I remember seeing that too. There were a lot of runs given up by pitchers who you would hope improve (a guy like Reed, Axelrod, and Danks) or by guys who will not pitch for the White Sox this year (Humber, Ohman, Stewart, Liriano). On the other hand, you have some guys on offense who you've lost or will lose - Youkilis and Pierzynski - whose production needs to be replaced, and then you want to safeguard yourself against guys like Rios, De Aza, and Dunn/Konerko getting worse yet as well as others who you aren't sure how they'll produce (Beckham, Flowers, Ramirez). So, in the end, I think it does make sense.
-
While depth could be added to the rotation and bullpen, they're fine. The lineup is where the biggest need(s) lie.
-
But this trade by no means guarantees success or even a winning record. If they go out and win 76 games next year, then team morale goes down, the odds that Shields resigns are less, and you are right back at square one down 4 prospects. Yes, you can make that argument for any trade, but the Royals just really aren't in a place to make a trade like this. That's why I'm doing it.

Francouer murdered the Sox last year...to the tune of a .768 OPS. -
On what planet is Wade Davis a #3 starter? Maybe that's his potential, but he continually got worse when starting and pitched out of the bullpen last year. Yeah, they'll have a better team, but I don't think it's enough to compete, and they did give up 4 prospects, 3 of whom were very good, for a starting pitcher who is about to get expensive and a bullpen or back of the rotation pitcher.
-
We'll see. I think that the Sox will end up with a better record than the Royals and I'd honestly be surprised if they end up over .500. There are some decent pieces in place but there's still a lot of work to be done.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 10, 2012 -> 10:06 AM) Denial sucks man. Those guys are good. Take the blinders off. IF --- and it's a big IF -- this move means the Royals are in "win now" mode then yes, KC is very much a place to win. They have a better park than us & they outdraw us. They have better talent too. If their FO is going to start acting like winners instead of perennial losers then they are very much for real. They hosted the All-Star game last year and drew 1.79 million fans. The White Sox drew 1.96 million, and this was considered a down year, even sparking a 400+ post thread on how to increase attendance. They do not outdraw the White Sox. It's not even close.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Dec 10, 2012 -> 10:02 AM) Huh? What does the offensive output of Hosmer and Moustakas have to do starting pitching over there? Davis is obviously a starter, he's only in TB's pen due to their very uncharacteristic SP depth. Hosmer and Moose will help that staff out with their gloves & the bullpen will hold the leads they get. Santana also is a very interesting change of scenery candidate. He's very Floydish mentally but KC is much lower pressure and the stuff is definitely there. Plus he has a contract to play for. That team is going to be tough to beat, and still, it's December 10th. KC still has a bunch of tradeable prospects and some salary they could shed in Frenchy & Chen, plus Hochevar's salary could be gone. It's not a very deep rotation, so unless those guys are better offensively, this could still be a very weak team. I think they'll be better, I just think there's a lot they need help with still. Oh, and regards to the Garcia trade...that was a solid looking catching prospect, a really good hitting prospect, and a flyer in Morse. Morse turned out to be the best of all, and those other two have been very, very mediocre to bad throughout the duration of their career, but none of them stack up talent wise compared to the number of prospects KC gave up. Tampa Bay got a very, very good haul for a guy they weren't going to re-sign and a guy in Davis who simply has not been a good starter at the MLB level.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 10, 2012 -> 08:38 AM) robneyer @robneyer My quick take: This is the worst trade in MLB history unless Wade Davis becomes a good starter, in which case it's only the second worst. I think, value wise, the Sox trades for Swisher were much worse than this one, and that one wasn't even terrible -
QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 9, 2012 -> 01:38 AM) Already ready the cliff notes. http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/runn...heat-sheet.html My decision hasn't changed. That's what scares me, because that's been your approach the entire time.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 8, 2012 -> 02:54 PM) Luck's been really clutch. He's ranked #6 in ESPN's QBR, which I think takes the game situation into account. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/year...htm#passing::21 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_quarterback_rating He's in some pretty elite company there. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/...ead-of-rodgers/ It's an incredibly flawed statistic and shouldn't be used by anyone

QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 05:07 PM) Im pretty sure it meant Sox would trade De Aza to the Reds. win

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 04:40 PM) Rios or they'll figure it out later. Upton is too good a player to pass on because they may not have a perfect short-term solution in center and Hahn knows that. I don't disagree, it's just an interesting dilemma.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 04:31 PM) The Sox are trying to deal De Aza and Viciedo to get a better a better prospect mix to get in the Upton derby. Who plays CF then?

QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 11:59 AM) hurts more because the few times we've really talked since the breakup, it's full of her telling me how wonderful and amazing I am. Telling me she still loves me. Most recently after I'd emailed saying we need to go strict NC, with no plan for reconciliation. Lol if she were mad at me or very clearly couldn't see us working out, this would be a helluva lot easier! And uh... we're gonna see The Hobbit together because neither of us wants to see it with anybody else (we're both nerds). I can't tell right now if this is a good sign or a bad sign. ie: whether it means I should keep fighting for the relationship or not. I know conventional wisdom would say that she's "got me on her hook" or that she's using me because she wants the benefits of having me around without the commitment of a relationship, but again, like I've said before, we've never played games and we've always and will continue to be completely honest with each other. But there's the part of my brain that also is shouting "If she wants you SHE'LL contact you. SHE'LL let you know. YOU don't have to do a damn thing." f*** this s***. Oh, and if you're debating whether you want to go for it or not, flip a coin. Heads is pursuing the relationship again Tails is ending it. Flip the coin. Don't look at it. Every person always has a pre-determined or even subconscious feeling on the subject, even if they don't want to admit so publicly. So pick the outcome of the side of the coin that you wanted.

If you want to go for it, then do it. And if not, let it go. And if not, I would strongly recommend no contact, because talking on even a semi-regular basis is what got me in trouble in the first place (my ex and I talked about once every other day and Skyped like 2 times a week...we went no contact and everything settled down). EDIT: and no contact includes the movie too. Just tell her thats how you feel and you're sorry. Being friends with someone after a long relationship just really isn't possible. You can be acquaintances, but that's about the extent of it

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 11:16 AM) I really believe I would succeed, but thats just me. As you can tell, even from posting about my beloved Chicago White Sox I'm an extreme optimist and thats where my belief in succeeded is coming from. George's Gyros was around forever and had no social media influence, I think that right there tells me success could be had at this location. The place that failed, didn't have a social media influence either, and the food and customer service sucked which is why I think they failed. When you go into a restaurant you wanna feel welcome, you wanna feel at home, and if you don't feel that and the food sucks chances are you're not gonna wanna come back. I feel my menu plan is pretty solid in offering people a choice, I feel my food will be fantastic, my customer service will make people feel welcome and want to come back, getting the hospital and police station involved is a smart move, and getting it involved in social media will be a huge boost over what was there before. If I could find someone to invest that knows how to balance the checkbook there's no doubt in my mind I can be successful....but like I said thats just my attitude. There's more to running even a small little place like this than balancing a checkbook, but I've said enough. I won't touch this again.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 11:37 AM) so what if it's the girl who broke up with me a month and a half ago that "feels right"? Yep, mine did too. Mine still felt right after 6 months. It's going to hurt like a b**** for a while.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 11:32 AM) Unfortunately, only one year of Floyd at $9.5M doesn't offer much surplus value. The estimate surplus value of a top 100 prospect is well over $10M, and Floyd is nowhere near that. Maybe the scarcity and high price of free agents bumps it up some, but the chances are low Floyd himself could bring back an exciting prospect. It saddens me as co-member of the Gavin fan club with wite. The time to deal Floyd for value was last offseason, but he was, uhhhh, sorta important throughout the year. I fully believe that, with the right pitching coach in the right situation, Floyd can be a #2. I just don't think it's going to be here because I don't think there's any chance he's with us next year. If the Sox could even get a return like the Twins did for Span, I would take that for Floyd.
