  1. QUOTE (GoGoSox2k2 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 10:50 AM) not sure it would take all 3 of them. floyd and thornton alone would have to interest them. then we could spin De Aza or Dayan for an upgrade somehere. possible package with beckham for a 2nd baseman or 3rd baseman. Dayan, Beckham a start to possibly Headley (with Keppinger than going to 2nd) Headley's not going anywhere and the Padres have laid out pretty strong indications to this idea for about 6 months now.
  2. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 09:18 AM) and with that security job, what are you going to be doing 10 years from now? if you had a line cook job, in ten years you could be running your own restaurant. just something to think about. In my experience, that is the best way to get into any sort of managerial position within the restaurant industry. You work your way through a stabile and successful kitchen and prove your worth, and then you rinse, lather, and repeat. If you can, get a job cooking at a bigger hotel. Your knowledge of food will expand exponentially, they're profitable enough that a lot of times the kitchens themselves will experiment and bring in different ingredients just for testing purposes, you'll always be busy, you'll continue to make money, and you'll make some more connections within the restaurant industry itself. I know you said you've worked at a bowling alley and that your food is delicious and all that jazz, but any and all diversifying is good. And then, if you do open this and only have like 1 other employee, it means you don't get a vacation for years and years. And what happens if you get sick? You can't work because #1, it's health code violation and #2, people don't want to eat food prepared by a sick person. You won't be able to be back cooking whatsoever. Are you just gonna close up shop for the day? What if there's a family emergency or a funeral or a wedding? You have to be prepared in those situations. While I like the general idea and appreciate your passion, you seriously need to sit down and come up with a rock solid business plan before taking any further steps. You will have to prove that you are qualified to not only cook, but to effectively manage the business, property, employees, and finances as well.
  3. (title edited for clarity purposes) I think this is something we are going to see more of under Hahn. It's a $50,000 risk to try and catch lightning in a bottle. If you don't want the player, you can simply send them back and any organization will take their previous player back for $25,000.
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 09:57 AM) Mike, honestly, they have traded you every year for the past 3 years and you keep blocking it. Go somewhere they want you. Seriously, I can't imagine how that isn't awkward for him.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 09:02 AM) The Sox were 9th in the AL in ERA last year, both their starters and their bullpen overall put up numbers that were average. If Sale stays healthier and doesn't need to be as worried about innings load, ditto with Quintana and Peavy, and Danks comes back to add another guy who can give an ERA in the 3's...and the Sox don't wind up needing to blow as many games with struggling rookies as they did last year...then that is several games of upgrade. Sox were #4 in the AL in runs scored last year. They could still see offensive improvement from guys like Viciedo, Beckham, Flowers, having ADA not get hurt, and Ramirez...and this signing hopefully keeps 3b from being a 2 month black hole. The same lineup could get extra wins...but the biggest place to improve remains the pitching staff. 7th in ERA 6th in runs allowed 9th in ER Just want to clarify
  6. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 08:39 AM) Yes, it was. And most of the stuff that came out of his mouth was wrong. He exaggerated alot of stuff about AJ because he didn't like him. Opinions about AJ should not be based on anything he said. He was making comments about his work ethic and such which is totally false. Any indication I've ever read or heard about Brett Tomko is that he's a bigger dick than AJ
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 07:50 AM) Brandon McCarthy ‏@BMcCarthy32 Now that I'm on the inside of this process, I've done the math and figured out that 96% of all hot stove info & rumors are complete nonsense God I love him. I want him so badly to be back with the Sox.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 08:25 AM) BS. Who has AJ ever targeted publicly? He was the target of a coward in SF who wouldn't use his name. Even when Barrett punched him, he didn't fight back. You mean Tomko? I'm pretty sure that was never officially publicized, but it's long been assumed. That was the whole "$100 to anyone who hits a homer off him" deal.
  9. So long as people accept Keppinger for what he is - a good, solid contact hitter - I don't think too many people are going to be upset with him. This isn't a Darin Erstad (brought in under false pretenses and was terrible), Mark Kotsay (brought in to be a DH when a far superior option was available at the same or lesser price), or Juan Pierre (slap singles hitter getting too much money that the Sox actually traded players away for) situation. Keppinger's deal is very fair, I believe Ventura will utilize him properly depending upon his production throughout the life of his contract, and I have no expectations beyond a decent OBP and making a lot of contact.
  10. QUOTE (YASNY @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 12:51 AM) Greg, this is a business. AJ is catcher on the wrong side of 35 who is coming off of a career year just as he hits free agency. If he's going to make a big score it's now or never. You say that you can't believe he'd not want to give the Sox a discount. I can't think of one single reason he should. He's given the Sox discounts on like 3 different occasions. It's time for him to cash in and time for the Sox to move on. I loved AJ and appreciate him for what he did, but at some point they need to start developing a new catcher, and there's no time better than now.
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 11:08 PM) Sorry to offend, but I studied his stats and I didn't see much pop in his bat for a corner infielder. I saw a guy I would not want on my fantasy team. He'd be great as a younger version of Old-mar. It's just my opinion. Don't get worked up. I'll support him on Opening Day. I just don't like him being the Sox starting third baseman. Don't think he deserves that role. Quite frankly, I don't give a s*** if you want him on your fantasy team. I don't want him on mine either, but that doesn't make him a bad player. He has enough pop, he'll punch a few over the fence and into the gaps, but he wasn't brought in to hit home runs - he was brought in to keep the lineup moving and to put the ball in play. And at $4 million a year, if he falls off a bit, he's going to be affordable enough that they can use him in a utility role down the road. This also allows the Sox to allocate some resources elsewhere too. Youkilis is probably going to end up $8+ mill or so on a multi year contract and he actually had a worse season last year than Keppinger. I don't envision Keppinger maintaining that this year, but he's not going to be a bad player. Oh, and the Sox had an outstanding offer out to Eric Chavez too and he simply wanted to play out west. I can't blame the guy - he's from California and probably lives out there.
  12. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 09:30 PM) Christoper Montgomery Sale. WE GOT A MIND READER
  13. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 05:21 PM) You know, i remember the same thing about Kevin Brown, but then you look at his baseball reference page and damn. He seems like he lived up to it to me. I looked at his numbers too, and they were actually pretty incredible save like one season where he was terrible. But the knack on him became that he couldn't stay healthy and then, after he finally was healthy again, he was traded to the Yankees. If Greinke gets even close to $25 million a year, it's going to be incredibly difficult for him to live up to the contract without winning a Cy Young or two.
  14. Didn't read the article, but I assume it's basically Gardenhire saying he might not be the man for the job and he understands if they relieve him of his duties if the team doesn't succeed this season. That's fine and dandy, but I honestly don't think the Twins brass will fire Gardenhire. Players love him, he's typically a pretty good in game manager, and it's not as if they're underachieving - they simply don't have the talent. In fact, the Twins as an organization have gone more than 26 years without firing a manager. Think about that for a second. Tom Kelly managed some absolutely terrible teams in the late 90s, managed them to a winning record in 2001, and then retired following the season. Oh, and Ryan was just rehired as GM in November of last year. He's not on the hotseat at all.
  15. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 09:16 PM) Will they give Morel a chance to beat out this stiff? I think we'll all be clamoring for Morel if he's healthy. Jesus, this news was reported less than 9 hours ago and he's already a stiff. You really are a piece of work.
  16. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 09:16 PM) Why wouldn't you give up Viciedo? He basically replaces Viciedo. I'm not saying it has a chance of happening, but if it did, I would totally give up Viciedo. There's only one player in the entire White Sox franchise that I wouldn't give up for Justin Upton.
  17. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 06:50 PM) I guess i should probably get ESPN insider, I think this about the 3rd time I've asked what was said on there. Article they got up now says "The White Sox could hit the trade route soon." and tags Floyd and Beckham. Wonder if there's anything worth noting in there. Don't waste your money, anything they come up with are either regurgitated from free sources or it's mere speculation, and none of those ESPN guys are trustworthy enough to listen to.
  18. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 06:25 PM) The Heimlich f***ing boomsnap
  19. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 05:54 PM) .755 against RHP last year with a .305 BA. That's more likely an outlier compared to a larger sample size.
  20. Ichiro would not be better. De Aza is fine. ESPN knows as much about the White Sox as a snapping turtle. Don't read or follow them.
  21. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 04:42 PM) The $160M for Greinke is just crazy, to me he is one of the most overrated pitchers out there. Reminds me of the Kevin Brown deal. He could be great throughout the entire thing, but you just never feel that he'll live up to it.
  22. QUOTE (farmteam @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 04:31 PM) Indeed. You know as well as I do that there's no general "duty to rescue." Unless you are Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne
  23. QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 04:22 PM) Yeah, you can't b**** about players following the money while simultaneously b**** about them prioritizing non-monetary considerations. Just because the non-monetary consideration is against your team, that does not mean that the player (Youk) is a bad guy. He practically chose the White Sox when he left Boston, but something about his experience here made him not especially eager to stay. Who cares? And if it is the attendance...are you going to say that he doesn't have a good argument? If it's not about money and he wants to play in front of a big crowd, then there are other teams he can sign with. If he signs with Cleveland, then he's a hypocrite.
  24. QUOTE (forrestg @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 03:45 PM) the scouting report said he three good pitches but velocity is down. Jenks was a starter before we got him. just noticing similarities . worth a look C That's why he was brought in. Jenks didn't have 3 good pitches in the minors though. He developed his cutter/slider in the majors. When he was in the minors, he was 100 MPH fastball and a huge 12-6 curve. That's what he got people out with.
  25. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 03:50 PM) Joel Sherman said he heard from Youk's "colleague" that Youk didn't like playing in Chicago since the Sox didn't draw huge crowds. So is that why he hit so well at home then? Is that also why he's looking to sign with the Indians, whose attendance is even worse? That might be the worst reason I've ever heard in my life. Youkilis can pound sand, I hope he doesn't do jack.
