  1. QUOTE (3E8 @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 10:38 AM) How would you use Salty? I think he would be redundant on our team. He's very similar offensively to Flowers. They both have the same career wRC+, 88. Flowers' advantage is that he's good defensively and over the next two years will be somewhere between $5M-$10M cheaper. I don't think there is enough of a platoon advantage between him and Flowers considering the defense and cost to be worthwhile strictly at catcher. Flowers actually has a higher wOBA against RH with the Sox, and was significantly better against RH pitching when he played in Charlotte. I would bring Saltalamacchia in on the basis of never having too much talent. I think with regards to these two players, you are looking at two TTO type of players, which is both good and bad but they can prove to be good and extremely undervalued players. I also think, if nothing else, it provides some more depth as I imagine both Saltalamacchia and Flowers can play 1B in a pinch if needed. On top of that, I feel you'd always have a legitimate power hitter on the bench at all times too. He isn't the ideal player to bring in, but I would take him so long as there was more that came in return.
  2. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 10:16 AM) I'm happy for you that you found this clarity. There are so many women out there the right one will come your way. You'll know when it feels right as long as you keep your head about you. Oh I'm definitely aware, and I haven't pushed the issue. And I know the one I've been seeing isn't right too.
  3. As a general statement, I don't like the idea of Floyd straight up for Saltalamacchia. That is a 180 IP starting pitcher for a guy who is going to get maybe 300 PAs. I even like Saltalamacchia, and would consider trading Floyd to Boston with Salatalamacchia as part of the package, but they need to include a prospect or two as well.
  4. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 09:10 AM) Wait, what? He's saying he knows, likes, and appreciates bad and/or otherwise forgettable players, justifying his fandom.
  5. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Adrian Peterson, RGIII, and Aaron Rodgers are all good choices as far as I'm concerned.
  6. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 11:43 PM) Ive said this countless times... The hurry is there's a location I want 5 seconds from my house. I wouldn't need no 5 people at this location, George had 1 employee who was rarely there and she looked like a crack head, I don't think she was doing much of anything except cooking. It's a small hole in the wall in a bad location, I'd love to have the problem of being over worked because business is poppin. Like I've said in the past, I wanna run a food truck, but this restaurant would be pretty much the same thing with the small crews. I wanna be in the spotlight, I love people, I love talking to people, I don't wanna be cooped up on a line somewhere. I'd rather do security work over that and just save up the money for a food truck that way. If you really believe it will sell in fewer than 3 months, then I would suggest passing on this opportunity because today, and even 3 months from now, the chance you will fail is far, far greater than it is that you will succeed. If you really believe it will succeed and you can find a way to afford it, then do it. We're just anonymous faceless people sitting behind a computer. From personal knowledge, I don't believe you would fare well, but if you truly, truly believe and think you'll succeed, then do it.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2012 -> 01:04 AM) If she tires of him and tries to come back, he's better off saying no. If she would leave him for that...he's better off looking elsewhere and letting her be the one to figures the future out. The next week or two will not be easy but once it is over, that's done and he can move on. The best thing he can do is never look back even if she tries. If he gets down, buy him a drink and convince a bar band to play his favorite song. Once he is past the immediate part, the emotions let up some and be can start looking again. There are times it takes longer, but this, in my mind, is a pretty obvious situation where he simply can't look back. It was my ex's birthday yesterday, and so I sent her a text saying happy birthday. That was literally the only contact we had, and it felt great. Then she popped up on my FB feed because of her birthday (first time I'd seen her profile pop up at all in my FB for like 3-4 months) and yeah, I don't find her attractive at all. You can see my rantings and ravings on here from January thru April or so of 2011 on here about how much I miss her and wanting to move out to Seattle and all that jazz. It would have been incredibly dumb and I would have set myself up for failure.
  8. QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 10:58 PM) Trade beckham floyd and quintana for upton Sign drew to play second Then trade de aza for francisco to play 3rd. Sign meyers to pitch in starting rotation Beckham, Floyd, and Quintana isn't going to be nearly enough for Upton. That's not even enough to get Elvis Andrus, and the DBacks have said the Rangers need to add even more with him to acquire Upton. Drew is going to get like $6+ million and there's no guarantee he puts up better numbers than Beckham. And then you're left with a hole at 2B next year because Drew will be gone either way thanks to Boras. We've been over this...Juan Francisco is very mediocre, and Alejandro De Aza is an incredible overpayment. Think Jordan Danks. Brett Myers is mediocre and, while he did a passable job in middle relief for the White Sox, they'd be better off pursuing other opportunities. --- Yeah, I literally don't agree with any of those moves.
  9. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 09:52 PM) OK in 292 at bats for the White Sox he hit .235 with 15 homers and 46 RBI. He did walk 37 times. For the year in its entireity he hit .235 with 19 homers and 60 RBIs. 51 walks isn't too bad. In September he hit .220 with three homers and a lousy 8 rbis. He had 22 strike outs in 91 at bats. Like most of our hitters, he choked or simply sucked down the stretch, however you wish to describe it. Those are not the stats of a 12 million buck a year player, especially at 34. He's also an average at best fielder. He was not special at all with the glove. I don't know who to compare his stats to in White Sox history, but if his name wasn't Youkilis I don't think people would be happy with that performance. Now you could say if he stayed with the White Sox an entire year in 600 at bats he'd hit 30 home runs with 92 RBIs. I guess if you believe that you give him 12 million bucks, but I didn't really see an all-star caliber player in Youk with the White Sox. I agree that he wasn't worth $12 million and I'm glad the Sox didn't bring him back at that price. But to say he was a lousy hitter because he had a poor September is entirely short-sighted. He hit 15 homers with the Sox, drew quite a few walks, and brought home quite a few runs. He wasn't a good hitter, but he was far from lousy. And considering what the Sox had been running with at 3B prior to Youkilis arriving, his name could have been anything and people would have been happy about it. I don't think anyone here was unhappy with what Youkilis brought to the table for the White Sox, and if they are, they need a hard dose of reality.
  10. QUOTE (mataipaepae @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 06:06 PM) So I was watching the mlb network. They went over the braves and their lineup. And they said the organization would like another outfielder so prado could start at 3rd. They have juan francisco starting at 3rd right now. so why not give up one of our 4 outfielders and other minor leaguers for francisco? Either viciedo, de aza, rios, or danks? Francisco is a left handed power bat at 3rd. Could platoon with keppinger until ready full time. They really want a LF that can leadoff. So de aza might be a need. I'd give them Jordan Danks for Juan Francisco. I actually like Francisco's talent too. He has a nice, fluid motion and he can hit the ball a long ways. He still strikes out a ton - 70 in 205 PAs last year, for 34.1%; Dunn struck out at 34.2% - he doesn't draw walks, and he doesn't hit for average. Yeah, Jordan Danks. Nothing more than that.
  11. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 05:05 PM) Rule 5 draft picks and 29 yr old do not go together...........does nothing to improve the team very much. It does improve the team though because it brings in a utility infielder. And it doesn't do anything to hurt the team. If they don't feel he's capable, they can simply release him back to the Angels at any time. For whatever reason, you got upset about a move that cost the White Sox $50,000. Compared to say a $50,000 salary, this is a move that costs $25. So basically you are getting upset over the fact that the family down the street went to Denny's instead of IHOP for breakfast. The good news? If they don't like it, Denny's will give them $12.50 back. (why am I talking so much about breakfast today?)
  12. QUOTE (PorkChopExpress @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 05:14 PM) Why not? Assuming $25 million for Hamilton, that commits roughly $81 million to the following players for both the 2013 and 2014 season: Hamilton ($25 mill) Danks ($14.25 mill) Dunn ($15 mill) Peavy ($14.25 mill) Rios ($12/$12.5 mill) That doesn't include extending Sale nor deals for 2013 nor any smaller deals already signed for 2014 nor any other additions the team may need nor arbitration eligible players.
  13. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 03:56 PM) I think those two are definitely on the block. I am perfectly fine with that.
  14. QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 03:17 PM) Except the proposed change makes perfect sense despite being different while in reverse it wouldn't make sense. I honestly don't think it makes sense at all.
  15. QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 03:14 PM) I actually had a dream last night that we traded Floyd and deaza and signed Hamilton. The only way they'd even begin to have room for that would be dealing Floyd and Thornton, and I just don't think that'd be a very smart move.
  16. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 02:24 PM) Bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits are great anytime. There are times when I want breakfast food after 10:30 and I'm pissed that everyplace has stopped selling breakfast. Brinner FTW But lasagna at 7:30 AM might be a little weird
  17. QUOTE (danman31 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 02:29 PM) Not your traditional Rule V pick, but the Sox wouldn't have taken a traditional Rule V guy anyway. This guy has a better chance of sticking on the roster than most and considering he was only selected to be a utility guy he's easier to keep on the roster. This seems more like a minor league free agent signing than a Rule V pick. Hard to dislike it, gives more options. When was the last time the Sox took a Rule V in the Major League phase? I remember going into the last few years knowing that there was no chance the Sox were going to take anyone. This is certainly a change of pace. Last one I remember was Jason Grilli
  18. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 01:55 PM) Man, that's big time money for a guy in obvious decline. He is a below average fielder at third and lousy hitter. Good luck, Yankees. Wow. He is far from a lousy hitter. Unless guys are putting up Miguel Cabrera type numbers, they just don't cut it for you, do they?
  19. QUOTE (Disco72 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 01:15 PM) I'm the Commish of a standard Yahoo! FF league. Today, I locked the rosters of the non-playoff teams because some owners were still adding/dropping players despite the fact that there were no more games left to play. One owner is really upset, claiming he paid his league fees for 16 weeks of FF, not just 13 and that if a playoff team wanted the player they could pick him up first (which isn't really true if it is off waivers). I made an exception for potential keepers. We have a system were you can keep a player depending on the round in which they were drafted, so there is some value in picking up hurt star players or potential up and comers. My view is that their season is over by virtue of not making the playoffs. The owners still playing have a chance to win some decent money, and they shouldn't be shortchanged by some bored owner picking up and dropping random players. Any thoughts? Anyone disagree with my decision? I disagree with locking them entirely because of the idea of injured players as keepers, but I get that that's not possible, so gun to my head, I think locking the rosters is the best. If there is public outcry about not being able to claim an injured player, just shoulder it and do the waiver claims manually. No reason they should be adding active players though.
  20. QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 01:26 PM) I'd say it becomes MORE of a football play. If this was always the way change of possession worked and you suggested the kickoff instead, people would say huh? And this doesn't eliminate contact. It's a fourth down play and one player in particular is likely to get licked. Of course if you did something one way and completely changed it around, it would be weird. If you grew up eating lasagna for breakfast and bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits for dinner, it'd be weird to switch it around too.
  21. I worked for a restaurant that failed when I went to school. The reason it failed was because he purchased his groceries from the store rather than through a commercial food distribution center (such as Sysco or US Food Services). Getting products in through retail markets of any type is an incredibly expensive venture and can increase the cost of your food between 25% to 500%. There are situations few and far in between where it's profitable and wise to get food from secondary and smaller markets like that. Delivery services are expensive too. --- I could go on and on asking question after question but I'd be wasting my time. I'm about 99.9% sure I'll never eat there due to the distance between me and the spot, and I'm not going to invest. You need to ask yourself these and any and every possible question that someone could ask, and they have to be legitimate answers. Saying "I have an immune system which provides more protection than a Trojan condom and the Great Wall of China" doesn't count. You need a plan in place. You need set strategies, firm plans, a mission and vision statement, anything and everything. Talk to people who own and run restaurants during down times. Do research online. Do anything you can to learn how to run a business and a restaurant. You see a stat that says 10% of all restaurants make it and think that you have a shot to make it, but at this moment, just from reading and knowing your reaction, I would say that establishment, if you bought it by the end of the year, would have less than a 1% chance of succeeding, and I would say there would be a chance that you'd bankrupt/selling/closing down within 2013. There are many, many, many venture capitalists that I've spoken with when I was in school who said that they only thing they would never, ever, ever invest in is a restaurant because of how often they fail. I'm not trying to be mean. I'm trying to be real.
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 11:29 AM) What a great trade by the Twins. Yep. I think Revere's gonna stick around for a while and hit for a little more power eventually, but he's a 3-4 WAR player at his peak. Worley looks like he could be there next year.
  23. Pretty sure Boras is Ellsbury's agent. Think it's safe to say that's not gonna happen.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 11:43 AM) You've got an axis inversion in there. The Sox allowed the 6th most ER in the AL; in that stat, a high ranking is bad, while tey have the 9th best ERA: in that a low number is good. I see what you did. I just always just have good outcomes as #1, no matter how they rank. They actually allowed more earned runs than the Angels and Rangers (with whom they were tied) but played a few more innings too. They were actually tied for 7th in the AL, but, when dividing out, they did finish 9th by the thinnest of margins.
  25. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Dec 6, 2012 -> 11:09 AM) Could the Sox live Viciedo at 3b? DeAza or Grandy playing LF and CF with Dayan going to 3rd presents a pretty potent lineup. You have to figure about 25 errors at 3b but would the offensive influx Granderson would supply offset that? I saw Pedro Alvarez had 27 errors and a .926 fielding % last year. I think Viciedo could put up similar numbers, defensivley. Keppinger, or even Beckham, could be used in the utility/late inning defensive role. Just a thought. No. They had considered it as an emergency option only. Viciedo will not move back to 3B.
