http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-leag...59050--mlb.html Really cool marketing idea hopefully for the future of the franchise, plus you get your name out there a ton. Also, it's a slow, cute offseason fluff piece.

2012-2013 Sox off season Catch-All thread

QUOTE (PorkChopExpress @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 04:58 PM) OK, since nothing is happening to talk about, I'm going to throw out an idea for discussion. Indians just designated Russ Canzler for assignment. Why not pick him up? He can play a little 3B, a little 1B, and a little LF/RF (not sure how well at any of those positions). He has some decent minor league stats, and not terrible, but not great major league stats (he hits well at the Cell, though). Could be a nice bench player. Thoughts? Worth a shot. -

QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 04:39 PM) Angels signed Pujols last year to a longer and more lucrative deal, and the attendance in Anaheim did not go up. It went DOWN. Hamilton is NOT a "fannies in seats guy". If Albert Pujols, a legit HOFer in waiting, cant bring in the fans, then why would a drug addict already on the decline do it for fans? Attendance went down by 150,000. They probably increased ticket prices accordingly, and ended up making money out of the whole deal.

QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 03:55 PM) Jeff Gray is listed as one of the Sox non-roster invitees. Remember when we were all upset and stuff about him getting claimed off waivers by the Mariners?

QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 04:11 PM) If the Sox wanna compete with the Angels, Rangers, Blue Jays, Red Sox, Yankees and/or Detroit, they have to spend more $ to improve the team. If they don't, then rebuild! The Blue Jays payroll was $73 million last year. They've spent money this offseason because they've saved money in the past. The Orioles payroll was $75 million. The Rays payroll was $62 million. The Athletics' payroll was $56 million. Meanwhile, the Red Sox had one of the highest payrolls in the league and were the 3rd worst team in the league. The Twins had a $100 million payroll and finished dead last in the AL. So, please, stop with this "they need to spend" stuff. I'd like them to acquire a big time bat, but there aren't any in free agency (that are clear fits on the team) and I'd prefer the save the money rather than spend it carelessly. If all they did was bring in one more reliever and they called it an offseason, I'd be perfectly content.

QUOTE (RZZZA @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 11:44 AM) I don't have any direct proof I'm just inferring based on my knowledge of Derrick Rose and the relationship between him and Lebron. There's been very little indication of any kind of friendship between the two. False praise from Lebron don't mean a heck of a lot when Rose is out with injury and no threat to him at all. Anyone would say nice things about their rival to the media when prodded. How about this: when asked who should be the MVP, Derrick Rose has never picked Lebron. How about the fact that he gave him a dirty look when he was dancing at the ASG. How about the fact that his pitch to get Lebron to come here was tepid and half-hearted at best? I think he campaigned harder for Kirk Hinrich than he did for Lebron. There's lots of little events like that that would make a reasonable person (like me) to infer that Derrick Rose hates Lebron. Ok so let's drop it, I'm dropping it now http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...t&p=2736141 @TyDunne Marshall: I don't like the Green Bay Packers. I really don't like their players. I'll play this like it's my last game.
-
QUOTE (RZZZA @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 11:30 AM) C'mon, you seriously think Rose likes Lebron? That he isn't trying to destroy him on the court every chance he gets? that he doesn't want to be buddies with him during a game? Rose is a pretty fiery competitor. In the heat of battle, I don't think he likes anybody on the other team. That is a weak, weak argument. EDIT: Also, basketball is a little different in game than football too. It's pretty much nothing but action constantly. There really is very little time to exchange pleasantries.

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 11:17 AM) Perhaps a good time to note: looking at De Aza's entire minor league career....he has the look of one of those guys that (1) produced well at all levels (2) got an injury (3) came back eventually and actually didn't miss a beat (4) just got lost for awhile in the blob of prospects out there (5) performed well when he finally got his late 20s real chance. He never really was a crappy prospect, just an ignored solid one. That was the thing, he constantly dealt with injuries, and he was injured a bit this year too. There are durability concerns, but he's always been a good hitter.

Well he talks about OBP being a problem for the Sox and then basically alludes to the fact that Pierzynski doesn't get on at a good clip A .324 OBP is so good that without it, the team will not get on base. They aren't losing a roided up, .600+ OBP Barry Bonds here.

The really weird, coincidental thing about all of this is that within the 30 days, there was a random, unprovoked shooting spree in Newtown, North Dakota. The shooter went into a random house, killed a grandmother, 3 grandchildren (none older than like 9 or 11), and then, as police were trying to detain the shooter, he slit his own throat. As I understood, the kids father was pretty important within the Native American tribe up here, and he had some anti-social tendencies.

QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 03:53 PM) Bourn has been an all star, has won 2 gold gloves AND stole more bases last season than DeAza has in his entire career. If I was writing the check, I'd stick with DeAza, but, I'm not, so I'd rather have the better player. If you attend games, then you are writing the check. I don't mind the idea of a player like Bourn, even if it were replacing Viciedo, but Bourn is simply not going to be an option due to his pending price tag. $15 million is a ton for a marginal upgrade. QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 03:51 PM) I hope you're right, Nostradamus! QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 03:16 PM) and our biggest issue, the OL wasn't adressed. I f***ing hate being a Bears fan right now but I can't not root for them. I feel like a Cubs fan. You feel like a Cubs fan? I cheer for a team that wears royal blue, red, and white, have lost their last 4 championship appearances in embarassing and heart breaking fashion, lost their last playoff game on one of the biggest fluke plays in the history of the game, haven't made the playoffs in 13 years, and every single year the fans say "This is the year!" I feel like a Cubs fan.

QUOTE (Lamar Johnson 23 @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 03:33 PM) Intelligent response. Seriously, you cannot judge a player's ability based on one season as a full time player. There are a ton of players that have had 1 or 2 good seasons and then sucked after that. You are arguing paying a guy $15 million a year to bring the same exact skill set as De Aza. He could flop just as easily as De Aza. I'd rather run with De Aza.

Yeah that's aburd. I have played video games all my life - anything from goofy, cartoony, and cheesy to realistic, violent, bloody, gory, and immoral - and I haven't been affected as a sane and functioning citizen of the United States because I can separate reality from fantasy. The biggest message we could send as a loving and caring society is to raise your children properly. Love and care for your children, raise them properly, spend time with them, nurish and nurture them, but also let them grow up, let them be independent, let them scrape their knees and fall in the grass. Without a good foundation, any person tends to lose focus and touch with reality and they can find themselves in a situation like this, or using drugs, or whatever you can imagine.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 11:15 AM) No. No one on this site has guaranteed me that Danks will throw 190 innings next year, but I'm getting jumped on for the opinion that he won't come back as good a pitcher as he was before the surgery. You stated it as fact, and then stated it as "history." There is a possibility, and perhaps even a good one, that he comes back worse. However, Chris Carpenter has had shoulder issues before as well and he actually came back better, so history works for Danks there. At least acknowledging that Danks could come back just as good is really all you needed to do, but I really haven't seen that.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 15, 2012 -> 10:34 PM) His knuckleball is new to his arsenal. He isn't like a Tim Wakefield that hasn't put a ton of stress on his arm because he has been throwing a knuckle his whole career, or who doesn't have to worry about fastball velo. Dickey has a lot of innings as a normal thrower, and his fastball is a complement pitch. He's been throwing his knuckleball since 2006. It's not that new. -
Best team all year long. Two worst weeks of the season came during the playoffs. Two best weeks for my opponent came during the playoffs. Needless to say I got s***stomped. I'm at risk of losing $10 even though I scored the most points and won the most games. The payout structure in our league is an absolute f***ing joke and will change next year.

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Dec 15, 2012 -> 12:49 AM) That all goes to poor judgement on the mothers part... she knew her kid was troubled. She decided it was a good idea to buy guns anyway. Bad parenting there. You can know kids have issues, but you never expect your kid to do this.

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 05:52 PM) http://www.theatlanticwire.com/national/20...-profile/60011/ Asperger's is a different beast. For a while, we thought my brother - coincidentally, also 20 - had Asperger's, and for all we know he might. It's a very high functioning form of autism where the person has some difficulty expressing themselves socially, they fixate on one hobby extensively for a period of time, and then they simply forget about it and pick up something at times to the detriment of the previous hobby (a hamster will no longer be fed, a car will remain on blocks, etc). They also will talk to you ad nauseum about said hobby and won't detect the signs that you aren't interested or that you are unknowledgable of the topic itself, and it can frustrate them when they don't feel they are getting even basic attention even if you are spending as much time with them as you can. If the person doesn't feel they are getting the attention they deserve, they can act out violently and irrationally.

QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 04:09 PM) Where's that other poster on here that used to be in a gang, tuna? did he post in this thread yet? He could probably tell everyone how easy it is to obtain illegal firearms and bulletproof vests etc. I know from experience, the kids i used to be surrounded by in high school all bragged about how easy it was to get a gun and i remember them showing me backpacks full of pistols and trunks of cars with automatic weapons, and im talking military grade stuff as in the same armor that I used in Iraq. Gun control laws? Psshh. Maybe it could work in the minds of those that have lived in cozy neighborhoods all their lives, but in neighborhoods that would make robocop malfunction, gun control means squat. I don't understand personally, but I can understand the idea. I can also guarantee that, if those initial acts I suggested were put into place, the additional number of handguns sold would decrease and, upon confiscation or depreciation to the point of breakage, hopefully be less eventually. Perhaps they could do a gun trade-in where you get cash for guns too, which would take more off the street too. This was suggested a while back, but it would have to be worthwhile for the customer too.
