  1. That is what most prospects turn out .... mediocre.....think Kip Wells, Garland, Wright etc

If only we had traded some of those when we needed one front line pitcher (and Schilling was available at the right price) in 2000, we might have gone to the series that year

  2. Does he even go back and read what he says? How can a man be so full of himself?

I am not a big Sosa hater, but this is hilarious.

    ==============================

Alfonseca has given up at least one run in seven of his last eight appearances, recording an 18.91 ERA since June 25. He has allowed 15 runs on 19 hits in 72/3 innings, which prompted loud booing from the crowd of 38,756 upon Alfonseca's arrival and exit.

"No one can handle booing but me," Sosa said. "You have to be strong physically and mentally. Some guys it's going to affect more than others. He deserves an opportunity."

  3. Buehrle confesses Cardinals allegiance, but watches his words

DETROIT--The St. Louis Cardinals-Mark Buehrle connection just won't go away, as the White Sox left-hander went on a St. Louis sports-talk radio show this week.

Buehrle, a native of suburban St. Louis, twice in the last two years has "joked'' during offseason banquets that he wanted to play for the Cardinals.

Talk about being a huge fan. Twice during an interview Tuesday on KFNS 590-AM, Buehrle used the word "we'' when referring to the Cardinals.

"That kills me whenever we get out of the playoffs or if we don't make it,'' Buehrle said on the air when asked how it feels when he sees the Cardinals eliminated from the postseason. "When I come [home] I get four tickets or eight tickets to go to the Cardinals during the postseason. Of course, I want to see the World Series come to St. Louis and they win. So it's not too good when they lose.''

Hosts Frank Cusumano and Tim McKernan laughed about trying to get Buehrle into more trouble, but to his credit, Buehrle did not take the bait.

Buehrle was asked if while scoreboard watching, he is more concerned with the Cardinals result or the results of teams in his own division. He also was asked if it would be a bigger thrill to pitch in St. Louis' Busch Stadium or to pitch in the World Series.

"I would say World Series,'' he said. "It's always been a lifetime dream to go to the World Series. But if I got a chance to pitch in St.Louis, either for them or against them, I think it would be a thrill, especially for my family, just to be able to watch me play.''

When asked about scoreboard watching, Buehrle sensed danger.

"You're going to try and get me in trouble aren't you?'' he said. "I'm rooting on the Cardinals. I've always been a Cardinals fan. Any time I look up there on the American League side, I'm looking at the teams in front of us, and when I'm looking at the National League, I'm rooting on the Cardinals to win.''

A popular rumor in St. Louis is that the Sox would make an improbable deal of sending Buehrle to the Cardinals for outfielder J.D. Drew. Buehrle quashed that thought.

"It's one of those things where I don't think the White Sox are going to get rid of me right now, especially since we went out and got Carl Everett to play center field,'' he said.

Buehrle is arbitration-eligible after this season and is looking at a substantial raise from the $445,000 he is making this season. The Sox have Buehrle's rights for at least two more seasons.

Buehrle (7-10, 4.34 ERA), whose next start is in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader Saturday at Cleveland, has won his last five starts since ending a 12-start string without recording a victory.

FLASHY OUTING: Tom Gordon kept things close in an eventual Sox defeat Tuesday when he shut down the Tigers in a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the eighth inning. He came on in relief of Damaso Marte to get back-to-back strikeouts, followed by a ground out.

Gordon got out of a similar situation June 27 against the Cubs when he escaped a bases-loaded, one-out situation with a strikeout and a ground out.

"I credit John Smoltz, I credit [Eric] Gagne, I credit all those guys who have [saved games] every day, day in and day out,'' Gordon said. "But I think some of the guys that should get most credit are the guys that set that up for them because they have the toughest time sometimes, and a save can be in the seventh inning.''
