  1. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 08:15 PM) I still think that's a pipedream. The two teams haven't traded with one another since 1987. There have been many trades between teams in the same division in recent years. Esp seeing how far back KC is and how much young talent they need to rebuild
  2. I thought of another name--Tony G. while he doesn't hit lefty, he's versatile enough to play 1b and other spots. With the sox pinch hitting numbers some of the worst in baseball. Tony could help with that as well
  3. QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 08:07 PM) That really worries me... gload really had to of done something bad that the orginization does not like. Like cheat has said before gload is the sox version of jared reiner. Only difference is gload is actually good and produced some what in the majors. As it stands we don't have a legitimate back up first baseman on this team. So how the hell does ozzie expect to keep konerko rested for the entire year? His silly ozuna, widger, timo options are not comforting. I don't think it has anything to do with Gload not being liked. He played 1b for the first time and now needs to be shut down for awhile. His throwing arm/ shoulder is hurt
  4. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 07:58 PM) Personally I think they're hoping Thomas will be the backup 1B. Mackowiak is a perfect fit in terms of lefty bat, plays multiple positions, etc. but he may not be available. I think the Sox desperately want guys like CArl and Frank to be more than DH's. I just don't see that happening with either, esp. if the sox are relying on their defense to win them some games. Right now, the sox will be counting on PK to play the next month with out any days off.
  5. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 07:56 PM) BTW I just wanted to throw this out the for the reactions... Since Paul Konerko got his two days off while Timo played first, Pauly is hitting .368 with 2 Hrs, 3 RBI, .478 OBP, 1.215 OPS, .737 SLG. I think PK would be helped by some time off. Last year, Gload was able to come into games late, pinch run, put PK to Dh, or sit for a day. This year, PK hasn't been able to get that time off. I'm not saying Timo is the answer. But the guy needs a backup
  6. With Ross Gload unable to play 1b for a while [not sure the time frame, but seeing how he couldn't even throw, we're talking weeks not days], the Sox will need someone to play 1b to give PK some time off. The in house candidates would have to be Greg Norton from AAA and Rogowski from AA. Looking via the trade route, for a good field, LH hitting option, some names come to mind from teams out of it. Travis Lee from TB. Raul Ibanez, though, IIRC, he has another yr on his contract. Few other names jump out at me. With Everett likely to be traded to give Frank his AB's, someone to play 1b who hits from the left side, and has some pop would be a nice addition. Maybe someoe who can play a position besides 1b would be good pick up, to give the Sox flexibility in moving people around the lineup. Any ideas/ names?
  7. I voted for Carl thinking it was who'd I rather see traded

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 06:33 AM) I don't think that Guardado would be handed the closer's job, if acquired. I believe Ozzie would still take the approach of going with his gut instinct or the hot hand, based on matchups. I think that would be the best way to go. That way, someone earns the closer spot. Nothing is handed to him. Team chemistry factors in this, where a guy earns respect and the ball in the 9th. Hermanson's earned it now. Eddie's earned it based on his past performances. Yet he would have to realize [if Hermanson was still throwing well at the time of the acquisition] that he wouldn't and shouldn't be guaranteed the ball in the 9th over Dustin. Any guy coming in to a 1st place team needs to adjust their game a little to fit in.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 05:29 PM) .286/.368 playing everyday isn't underachieving, imo. He's not a run producer, but he hasn't really been asked to be one and is playing in an extreme pitchers park. That would look amazing right now. He's a good hitter, maybe not the prototypical 3rd baseman but he's a good hitter. I like good hitters and the Sox need more of them. When I say underachieving, I mean underperforming to SD's expectations [weren't they really high, like top prospect, cornerstone guy for years?]. With SD looking for the playoffs, and other guys with less pop scatttered through the lineup, 3B should be looked at as an RBI guy.
  10. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 05:29 PM) UH, arent the Angels in the midst of aquiring Mike Sweeney, they will have an extra bet laying around after that. KC will try asking for Carlos Beltran type talent for Sweeney. It's likely he won't be moved until late.
  11. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 05:27 PM) Thats why I think you work the 3 team angles when your dealing guys that competing teams would be interested in. Plus you mention yourself the Sox are in competition and will want everyday players back (ie major leaugers) and the Pads are in that same position. Thats why you almost have to get a 3rd team involved otherwise its hard to see a deal that would make sense from both perspectives (rarely do deals help two teams out in the short run). It's too hard for my small brain to think up 3-team trades .
  12. QUOTE(chi-guy2 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 05:23 PM) maybe we could get bill mueller and mike meyers, this would help them because they could probably play payton and millar more or we could trade everett and crede for chavez and one of their bullpen arms, this way we wouldnt lose bmac I guess you forget to use the green font

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 05:17 PM) Crede is not as bad as we make him out to be. Over his short career with the Sox there's a pattern hitting-wise: at least one month he's an all-star, another month he's above avg, one month about avg, one month below avg, & one month he's poor. If you trade him after his all-star month he's worth a lot more. June was that month in 2004. He followed a poor May (.184A, .204O, .402S) w a monster June (.329A, .418O, .600S). He's just come off his worst month ever so maybe he's due for another monster June. I'm not saying Crede his horrible. A crede-burroughs swap would be for two underachieving guys who may need a change of scenery to fulfill their potentials. SD needs righties who can hit for some pop. Nevin for 1b has a SLG of .438, their top RH bat. The sox would have to add more than Joe to get a guy like burroughs--a young LH bat who can hit for avg. and takes walks. Joe has potential--yet the sox need consistency more.
  14. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 05:05 PM) IF you go one step farther and Frank is looking fine and Gload has came back and is playing like he did last year than I think you have to move Everett. Gload last year was a better player than Everett this year (no doubt about that in MY mind). Why pay Everett to clog the bench (not that I don't think he's valuable, but he's highly overrated and the Sox have other areas of need). You deal Everett to a team looking for a bat (maybe a 3 way deal) and you find a way to get a quality reliever out of it. Whether the other team gives the prospects to a 3rd team involved or what not. Then you look towards 3rd base and this will be tough. The Pads would be nuts to deal Burroughs (he may not be the prototypical 3rd baseman, power wise, but he's still a good young player) and they aren't trading him unless they get help in other areas (on the major league roster). .286, .366 OBP in a pitchers park. He'll never hit ya 20 HR's, but maybe 15 at the cell and he's a heck of a hitter. Did I mention that he's just 24. Of course if there was a way to get Burroughs I'd get him. I'd give up quite a bit as well, but it would have to be a 3 team deal and I Don't know what the Pads would be looking for. Maybe the Pads want another hitter and you acquire Burroughs, they get a hitter, and that 3rd team gets Crede and Sean Tracey and Felix Diaz/Arnie Munoz. They get 3 guys with a shot to produce (and in the end, when you make deals for youngsters, I think you want guys near major league ready who will have a shot to pan out). The key to any deals for the sox is getting guys who can add to this team. no doubt the sox want to upgrade at 3b and should be willing to overpay [within reason] to upgrade there. Everett might not get players who can add this year, as any team getting him would want him for a playoff run. So, the sox might have to trade other young players, prospects to fill the holes they really need to fill

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 05:07 PM) Burroughs...24 years old and has been long talked about as there shining star (they really hyped him and obviously he hasn't lived up to it) but he's hitting .286 with a .366 OBP. I don't think he's too bad of a 3rd baseman but he's probably not quite as good as Crede. He has all the tools though (good range, good arm). I just posted something similar in another thread, but only way the Pads do this is if they get what they want from a 3rd team cause they are one of the 3 best teams in baseball (record wise) and are going to want major league parts back and good ones at that. Crede, Tracey and someone else for Burrouhgs with those parts getting moved to a 3rd team who provides the bat or arm or whatever the Pads need. Seeing how Damian Jackson is getting regular playing time, Willie Harris would have to be a far better option to play 2b with Loretta out 2 months. Crede and Harris?

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 04:50 PM) I'd freaking love Sean Burroughs, but I don't see the Pads doing that. What is Burroughs defense like? [you're from the west coast right?] Weren't the Padres looking to deal Burroughs last yr as well? With all the lefties in their lineup, a righty like Crede with some pop wouldn't be all that crazy. Maybe a bullpen arm thrown in with Crede could get it done. With Loretta coming off the DL, and Geoff Blum earning his playing time, Burroughs could be the odd man out. Crede could see time at 3b as well. His ability to hit for avg, and get on base would look good for the sox. His SLG is non-existent. But the NL teams have to have some power guys from a spot like 3b if they don't have power at CF, 2b or SS.
  17. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 04:46 PM) If two to three weeks from now Frank is fine and is hitting the ball well than there is no doubt in my mind that I'd deal Everett. I think there are other holes on this team and I have upmoth faith in Ross Gload backing up the 1b position (with Konerko sliding to DH) if Thomas were to get hurt. Everett isn't playing all that grand (I think he's hurt, but who knows) and it doesn't make sense to pay him all that money on the bench when you could move him, maybe in a 3 team deal, to pick up a quality reliever and maybe free up a little more payroll to add a big bat at 3rd base or another "starting" position of need. solid points. The bat [for 3b or a platoon type guy who could see regular time] should be someone who can hit very well vs. RHP--preferably LH. Carl was supposed to provide LH power. Yet this year he's under .200 and almost [or all] of his HR's have come hitting vs. RHP. If Carl can't hit from the left side, [like he hasn't this yr] his value for the sox decreases dramatically.
  18. QUOTE(Wong & Owens @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 01:38 PM) I don't think either will be traded. Don't trade Carl, because You can't assume that Frank is 100% and will be the player he was 2 years ago--not yet anyways. Should Frank get hurt again, I do not feel comfortable with Gload, Timo or Ozuna as the everyday DH. Not with this lineup. You're not going to get much for Everett anyways, with his subpar average and OBP, the whisperings about a wrist injury, and lingering questions about his character. If Carl can accept his role as 4th outfielder(at least until Dye s***s or gets off the pot), which I think he will, he's a very valuable bat to come off the bench. Veteran switch-hitting power threats can be VERY important in the late innings of important games. As for trading Frank, he isn't going anywhere with that contract. Consider it a Roid-less Sammy Sosa arrangement. A few things: *Carl has worth. The "questions about his character" has been cleared up by the sox trading for him 2 times, and everyone saying what a team guy he is. *If Carl was dealt and Frank got hurt, Gload would play 1b, and PK DH. *Dye has hit over .300 with an over .600 slg lately. He's getting it together *The sox will make sure Frank is healthy before making any moves. But you're right, few teams will take on his salary for this yr and next

If San diego wants to cut its ties with Sean Burroughs, maybe Joe Crede trade for Burroughs could work. SD has a lot of LH hitters, and is near the league lead in offensive categories vs RHP. While they are near the bottom vs LHP. Trading a LH hitter for a RH like Crede could help them. Esp with Geoff Blum playing well as a backup, when Loretta comes back. If Burroughs hits for avg and a decent OBP [what he's done over his career] and plays decent defense [his numbers look a lot like Crede's], the sox can do w/o his HR power. The sox just need a guy who can hit .260-.270 and take some walks. That Burroughs hits well vs RHP, as another LH bat, could be a good fit. Esp if he isn't a butcher at 3b

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 12:18 PM) Now here's a VERY interesting option; Chances are, Ozzie would back his old manager over a ballplayer. No Mota.
  21. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 11:51 AM) Maybe, but a lot of people think he's a very overrated prospect. It's not like catcher's the BIGGEST need anyways. We've still got Francisco Hernandez .210/.270/.312 down at Kanny, and Donny Lucy who we drafted in the 2nd round last year. Clement may not be that guy, esp if his defense doesn't match his offense. I'd just like to see them take the best available guy, regardless of position. Even Of if a guy drops in their laps.
  22. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 11:00 AM) Maybe, but I tend to look at things this way. Case Study - Gio Gonzalez and Tyler Lumsden. Both were picked around the same spot. Yes, Lumsden has been injured, but he didn't exactly set the world on fire last season either (although that was probably due to his arm). Gio, on the other hand, the high schooler, has been just awesome so far, and no doubt looks the better prospect. The Sox have enough good prospects at this point, that I think that they should take a high school guy with the higher ceiling. Doubt that's going to be the case this year though, as the majority of the top prospects are college guys. The sox did take chances last yr as they had a lot of picks. But with only 1 in the first 2 rounds, they should take a "sure thing"--whatever that means. A college guy who has the makeup and track record to get to the bigs and contribute. I agree, a HS guy could have a higher ceiling. But they also have a lower floor. The floor the sox should be looking at IMO, is a guy almost certain to get to the bigs [doesn't have to be an allstar--just a contributor]
  23. QUOTE(danman31 @ Jun 1, 2005 -> 07:49 PM) MLB.com radio had a mock 1st round with beat writers and gurus for most of the teams. Go here to listen to picks 1-15. Here's their top 15: 1. DBacks: Upton 2. Royals: Gordon 3. Mariners: Tulowitzki 4. Nationals: Ryan Zimmerman, 3B, Virginia 5. Brewers: Maybin 6. Jays: Romero 7. Rockies: Luke Hochevar 8. DRays: Townsend 9. Mets: Hansen 10. Tigers: Pelfrey 11. Pirates: Andrew McCutchen, OF, HS (FL) 12. Reds: Jacoby Ellsbury, OF, Oregon St. 13. Orioles: Jay Bruce, OF, HS (TX) 14. Indians: Ryan Braun, 3B, Miami 15. Sox: Brian Bogusevic, LHP, Tulane I think everybody would be ecstatic if the top 14 went that way. I would love to have Bogusevic. If the first 14 picks went that way, wouldn't the sox take C Jeff Clement, who was supposed to be in the top 10?
  24. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 28, 2005 -> 05:21 AM) To me I'd prefer the Sox take a chance on a high school guy with a bigger upside than a college guy with more polish at this stage. The Sox have got enough good arms in their systems, that they can probably afford to take more of a chance, if you get what I mean. With only 1 1st round pick and no 2nd round picks, the sox want to make sure their pick gets to the majors. This isn't the draft to take a chance on a guy [now, last yr's darft with all the high picks was] A solid dependable guy like Carillo, makes sense.
  25. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 01:50 AM) Haven't seen this mentioned yet, but it was in today's Sun-Times that Guillen refuted reports that the Sox would be trading either Everett or Thomas. The key is that Ozzie doesn't see the need to trade one of them "yet" to fix the roster. With comments about both being FA's in 2006, that both are everyday players, etc, Ozzie realizes that they need to be getting a lot ab's. If carl can play the OF to the extent he won't hurt the team too much, then he could stay. But I think the sox will go for more versatility, treat Carl like the pro he is and give him a chance to be an everyday player elsewhere by trading him to a team that will play him, and improve the team in the process by filling a hole somewhere
