Oz vs. our boy
Boers and Bernstein calling Mariotti "eddie munster", is a liar as well. B + B said Phil Rogers has no credibility, saying Selig is OK and calling Ozzie a hypocrite

Oz vs. our boy
Didn't address Mariotti and I guess Phil Rogers' hit piece straight on. Yet Ozzie was still a little hot under the collar about some of the charges coming from the media. Hard to understand. Said Maggs is a liar. Talked about his situation leaving the sox, about wanting to take a pay cut to stay w/ the sox

Oz vs. our boy
The score is running tape on Ozzie talking about Mariotti and Maggs now

Baseball America top 100
In comparing the Sox and the twins guys, one thing stands out: the twins are depending on their guys like Mauer, Crain and Durbin to help them out now in order to win, the sox need their prospects to help out in the near future, yet can win now without them. Putting all that pressure on the young kids is dangerous. Too many bad things can happen such as injuries, slow development, etc that make depending on the farm system for a teams major league success risky. With Mauer [who knows if he can stay healthy catching] and Kubel hurt, it shows some cracks in the Twins "armor"

Bobby Jenks
QUOTE(aboz56 @ Feb 27, 2005 -> 01:41 PM) If that's the photo you are referring to, I'm fairly confident that it's not Jenks in the background. That's the one.

Bobby Jenks
I'm old so I can't paste the picture. But the picture from the Tribune ST gallery from the 24th where Garland is stretching with Ryan Meaux shows a big guy in the back, with a number in the 60's. Could be Jenks. -----Pitcher Jon Garland, right, uses the shoulder of his teammate Ryan Meaux as he stretches. (Tribune photo by Nuccio DiNuzzo) February 24, 2005

I recall seeing a Sox guy who looked like a lumberjack in the background of a picture of some regulars. I'll try and find it. It didn't sound like anyone else in camp so it could be him

Notes: Brushback incident at camp
QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 26, 2005 -> 02:06 AM) Yes, agree. Carlos was the guy he was referring to. If I am Guillen I can see being teed off about both things ... Jackson not sending Hunter a message and Carlos not making the heads up (maybe aggressive is the better word) play at 2nd base. Interesting that both guys are gone though ... Jackson didn't even last the season. Bottom line, I don't think it was one or the other. I believe Guillen was upset with both guys. Some people who were around here last summer when it happened knew how adamant I was that Jackson didn't handle business properly. And I may be very wrong thinking that way but for better or worse it looks like Guillen and I think the same, at least on this sort of issue. I always thought that game was the turning point. They could have used that incident to pick themselves and each other up. Yet they rolled over the rest of that game and the series. Don't see that happening this year. Too many "pro's pro's" have been added that won't let the sox go down to 2nd or 3rd place without a fight.

Utility infield competition
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Feb 26, 2005 -> 02:16 AM) If Valdez can play 3B I'm inclined to give him the job. But if Ozuna can show that he is at least capable of handling the utility spot and keeping his head above water, than it's probably better if Valdez gets regular AB's down at Charlotte. I'm pretty sure Ozuna has played 3B before but I don't think Valdez has. I think last yr was also the first time he played 2b too. IMO, Valdez should be in AAA as the long term fill in for Uribe in case Juan gets hurt. For Kw to come out and say the guy the UTL guy is now in camp, when Valdez and Willie haven't played a game at any new positions, makes it look like Ozuna has shown the Sox something

Bruce Levine on AM 1000
QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 25, 2005 -> 05:57 PM) Not surprising. It looks like he is the 12th man on an 11 man staff ... the first option in case someone gets hurt. I guess that means Adkins has minor league options left? I thought he didn't. I don't know if he'd be the first option if someone got hurt. My bet is Baj becomes the first RH guy called up with a good spring [has similar "stuff" as Adkins with far better control], maybe Diaz, and then Munoz. Adkins' control and propensity to give up the long ball will make him trade bait before the season begins. Unless he's starting in AAA just to fill a roster space, it doesn't make sense. Unless the sox are showing him off to other teams as a Dustin Hermanson type

Bruce Levine on AM 1000
QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Feb 25, 2005 -> 09:53 PM) Guys lay off Silvy. It's part of their schtick. Last night he and Carmen were at Harry Carey's, Carmen wore a Sox jersey and goaded the Cubs fans all evening. You can't be mad at Silvy for bringing up the cubs, and then laugh when Carmen bashes the Cubs. I was bashing Silvy for trying to start a controversy w/ Frank where there isn't one. When Silvy said that Frank should have been at camp the first day [and kept at it], Levine went through a few things: the first day of camp is basically a weigh in; there are no facilities for frank to rehab in, the place isn't equipped for that as there is no room. silvy kept at it and said Frank still should have came in the first day and then left. For that [trying to make up controversies where there are none, even after he has all the facts] he is an idiot.

Utility infield competition
One thing I couldn't find is what Ozuna's minor league fielding stats were. I know he played 55 games at 2b, 3 in the OF and 56 at SS with 15 total errors in 2004. But I can't find any info on what positions he played prior to 2004
-
Bruce Levine on AM 1000
Not much else. Of course Silvy had to ask a cub question to end the segment, even though Levine was in Tucson with the Sox, after spending time in Mesa w/ the Cubs early in the week. [can't keep that Cubs hard on from rearing its ugly head]

Bruce Levine on AM 1000
Bardo said he heard that Frank had gained a lot of weight in the offseason. Bruce said the sox hadn't heard that, that Frank knows he needs to keep his weight down to keep the pressure off his foot.
-
Bruce Levine on AM 1000
Said Jon Adkins will get stretched out this spring, get some starts. [my opinion--Jon will be a starting pitcher at AAA, maybe to enhance his trade value]
-
Bruce Levine on AM 1000
opened w/ info on Frank. Said Herm was in contact w/ him, will send Frank's shoes to his Dr. Silvy's a jag, hinting that Frank should have been at the opening of camp [just for the weigh in]. Idiot

Bruce on am 1000 now. He started at 11 am

Utility infield competition
Maybe KW and Ozzie got a good enough look at Ozuna in the field that he's the UTL guy. Sounds like it. At age 30, he's no rookie, so he's got a lot of game experience. Valdez would likely stay at AAA in case of an injury to Uribe. Maybe he'll see some time at 3b and 2b there too for being a backup UTL guy Keeping bullpen guys like Adkins, Diaz and Munoz in AAA [instead of trading for a guy like Cintron now] as possible bait for trading line deals makes sense. Esp. if Ozuna can play decent defense at SS and 3B. I'm sure the sox don't want to thin out their pitching if they don't have too. Ozuna is one guy I'll be trying to look at with my Tivo this spring.

Kittle on Canseco
With congress about to look into the whole issue, Canseco is nothing but a fly. If it were just him who could link everyone on the juice, Kittle may have something. But if Congress starts getting testimony, Jose will be old news. Those fools who used should be worried. but if they're stupid enough to use they won't be smart to get away with trying to whack Canseco

Interesting NBA rumor
Chandler won't be going anywhere. Curry could be traded after the season, in a Jamal Crawford type trade once he signs a bigger contract for a power forward type, who can score down low and be a solid defender. Chandler could then move to C. His defense is irreplaceable. Eddy's scoring isn't

QUOTE(poorme @ Feb 21, 2005 -> 09:31 PM) this story has the before and after http://www.detnews.com/2005/tigers/0502/18/tigers-94607.htm Going by the "eye test", Pudge looks like he's off them. Pudge doesn't look like he's lost weight. He looks like a new person. Once these guys start looking normal after looking like "gladiators" and wrestler for years, anyone has to wonder.

Our Guy is Available
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Feb 23, 2005 -> 11:59 AM) The problem is, is there anyone out there at the moment either on the trade market or via free agency that we can get to fill that need. At the moment, I'd probably suggest Alex Cintron, but there's not really too many others, although I'm sure KW is checking all of his options. the sox and other teams will know more later in spring. Esp. low budget teams who have young guys prove themselves and make some vets expendable. But Cintron seems like a guy who could be available now
-
Our Guy is Available
Polanco's best positions, in order, seem to be 2b, 3b and then SS. The sox need a guy who's best position is SS, 3b and then possibly 2b. Polanco doesn't seem to fit that mold.

Guillen comments on Iguchi
I think Ozzie isn't [and shouldn't be] counting on Iguchi to be the backup SS. but if iguchi shows he can play SS, Ozzie won't be hesitant to use him. But that's a long ways off, toward mid season if at all. Ozzie seems intent on making his transition from Japan to the states go smoothly. That should mean having Iguchi concentrate solely on playing 2b. Having him try to play both could make his offense suffer. The Sox don't want that to happen

New Scoop and Iguchi
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Feb 22, 2005 -> 01:44 PM) The Sox just need to draft the best player available, especially considering they won't have a 2nd round pick this year. Weaver or Drew could still be very well on the board @#15. If the sox don't pick a SS with their #1 then definitely in their top 3. I agree going with the best available for the #1 spot. You can't overlook talent just to fill a need. But with their pitching set from last yr, and the OF in good shape, the sox focus should be on the IF [which means 1B, SS or 2B, as Josh Fields fills 3B]. Yet getting a top SS could fill basically 2 spots for the Sox. If the pick pans out, it would give the sox options at 2b and SS, as Uribe can move over to 2b.
