Moustakas linked to Sox again
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 24, 2018 -> 08:29 AM) Come on Dick, that’s an obvious marketing piece. He played 3B last year while Tim f***ing Beckham played SS. If needed to play SS why didn’t he force this move last year? I think he’ll be open to 3B or SS as long as he gets paid. JJ Hardy was there a huge majority of that time...

Moustakas linked to Sox again
Harper makes a LOT more sense from the marketing side of things. He automatically makes the Sox relevant on a national scale in a way that only Trout could, maybe moreso. He gets the Sox the best possible negotiating leverage for the new tv deal. If the rebuild busts, it’s not so difficult to trade him as long as he stays healthy, plus insurance mitigates risk level. But you most importantly lock in the guaranteed tv money ($100-120 million instead of $50 mill). Essentially, his presence brings in an additional $1.2-1.5 billion in revenue over 20-25 years. Opt outs after two or three years could also help get it done. No way that signing Machado, Arenado, Rendon or Donaldson do that. He eclipses Bryant/Rizzo as the biggest star in Chicago, and increases attendance...it’s the exact same thinking as the Belle deal over two decades ago now, except Harper is the face of MLB’s future, along with Trout. Or the A-Rod pursuit, or even Tanaka. Plus, we already have a steadily improving relationship with Boras.

Congrats USA Men’s Curling. Had the magic shot in the 8th frame to knock out two stones of Sweden simultaneously...the rare five points locked it up. Ending on high note with Women’s Hockey, the cross country skiing shocker, and Kyle Mack getting silver in Big Air w/ the Bloody Dracula. Cool trick. https://sports.yahoo.com/explaining-bloody-...-040506761.html

QUOTE (New Era on South Side @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 11:58 PM) Gillibrand. She talks the right game, but just sees to be missing a certain “it” factor, charisma, energy...like the feeling the first time I heard Obama, Mario Cuomo, Bill Clinton speak in person, that they really could be president. Hillary never possessed it, either. Almost like magic, although that term gets way overused, like breaking the internet.

Gun Violence in America
As long as we arming our teachers to harden our schools - we better replace any windows with bullet proof glass or cover with 1/2" of armor plate. After that's done the next easy target will be school buses. So we'll need armed bus drivers and establish armed convoys. Probably need to add armor plating to the buses and helicopter support wouldn't hurt. So this could be a new Army, National Guard or Marine mission - could take all three - good thing we don't care about the rest of the world. The next target will be kids that walk to school. So, we'll need to arm crossing guards and have snipers on roof tops. That should almost get us to full employment and keep gun manufacturers pumping out guns. Once the rest of the world sees what we've done, I'm sure they will want to copy us. Less Thought this was funny...along with Trump calling the SRO a coward when he, Bush and Clinton all dodged Vietnam, 4-5 different times

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 09:32 PM) It is the biggest flaw in the rebuild. But it wasn’t necessary for the Astros to sign an outside player for over $100 million. They supplemented with quality veterans. But they were much closer to typical Sox spending for the likes of Reddick and Gurriel. Came up with four studs in Altuve, Correa, Keuchel and Springer. They were at $124 million opening day last year. $26 million, $50, $72.5, $97 was their progression starting in 2013. They didn’t crack $100 until Year 5 (2017). Made the playoffs at $72.5 million in 2015 and nearly stopped the Royals if not for a Correa misplay. Verlander $20 million/$40 million commitment, 2 years + vesting option (Tigers paying $17.5 million) McCann $17 million + club option (absorbed NYY deal) Keuchel $13.2 million Reddick $13 million x 3 remaining years Gurriel $12 million (only $18 combined for 2019/20) Springer $12 million x 2 remaining years Gattis $6.7 million (trade w/ Braves) Morton, Joe Smith and Gerrit Cole are their next 3 most expensive ($21 million combined). They’re super fortunate to have two options on Altuve for only $12.5 million combined (see Sale/Q/Eaton/Anderson). Same with Correa being in year 3 and around $1 million. That’s already $121 million for 11 players...but somewhere in the $150-155 million ballpark in Year 6 of the rebuild. For the White Sox, that would be all the way to 2022. One key difference, they bottomed out without a Sale, Q or Eaton to trade and missed on Appel/Aiken. Of course, they turned around and drafted Bregman, Tucker and Cameron (Verlander deal) a year later to make up for it (whereas Rodon, Fulmer, Collins/Burdi/Hansen and Burger have been a mixed bag.). Marwin Gonzalez made a huge contribution out of practically nowhere, as noted earlier in the thread.

Micker Adolfo out at least six weeks.
Ulnar Collateral Ligament Sprain. This type of sprain most commonly occurs in throwing activities. The injury is characterized by the insidious onset of vague medial elbow pain that becomes worse with activity. The pain is typically relieved with rest but returns on resumption of throwing at over 70 percent of normal velocity. An ulnar collateral ligament sprain can be demonstrated by pain or instability on valgus stress testing. Radiographs may show loose bodies, traction spurs or heterotropic ossification of the ligament itself. MRI can identify partial and complete tears, but this study is not usually necessary. https://www.aafp.org/afp/2000/0201/p691.html From everything you can find online, it looks like a combination of 2-4 months of rest and rehab. Basically, he would miss three out of five months of the minor league season (end of June/early July return), then could theoretically play in the AFL or winter ball. Otherwise, out for a full season but possibly with a stronger elbow upon return...1 1/2 years down the line. Since a lot of his value comes from his arm and power, it’s a pretty important decision.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 09:26 PM) this is the beauty of having a deep system. And it's not like he's a prized middle infield or catching prospect. Toolsy OF are a dime a dozen compared to IF prospects in the Sox org. It's a blow, but it's not a bad one. I'm just knocking on wood (literally, right now) that the more critical pieces to the rebuild enjoy good health this spring and year. We already are dealing with a pretty bad setback with Rodon imo. edit: we have "SonofaRoache" and "GoodAsGould" both in this thread right now. Awesome. Ummm...after Robert and Jimenez, it’s hard to find a projected big league starter other than the possibility of Rutherford. I guess if you start counting the Engels and Cordells as “toolsy.”

Gun Violence in America
Cornyn pretty much announced raising the age limit to 21 is done in the Senate. So now it will take another high school or university-aged shooter with a mass shooting...of course. Then it will invariably be about the FBI, background checks, local law enforcement, SRO’s, teachers’ unions not arming themselves to prove they really love their students, our byzantine mental health system, privacy rights/due process, databases not seamlessly communicating, etc. Or just labeling every shooter as crazy/nut job/disturbed.

Moustakas linked to Sox again
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 08:02 PM) This is exactly how I see the Sox rebuild unfolding. I see them taking the Houston approach filling needs with second tier free agents and then making big trades at the right moment. I guess there is more than one way to win a WS through a rebuild after all but you’d think the Sox rebuild is destined for failure if they miss out on Machado. I even forgot Brian McCann, yet another “name” vet.

Moustakas linked to Sox again
Let’s go back to the central argument.. There MIGHT be a point where Moustakas makes sense, where there’s a market inefficiency to be exploited THIS year. Some say 3 years/$38 million...others 5/$60. Another group, it depends on an opt out. All things considered, that’s equally or more realistic than Machado (who might want to play SS anyway), Donaldson, Arenado and Rendon. You could also argue that signing the equivalent of the Astros’ Gurriel from Cuba or Kang (minus the domestic violence issues!) from Japan/Korea is the best move because it doesn’t cost us in the 2nd round or future depth/talent surrendered, like a Verlander or Longoria to SF move. Not to mentioning absorbing huge veteran contract dollars. But that’s where scouts make their living. At different times in the last five years, Verlander and Longoria looked like toast.

QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 07:45 PM) How so? What big dogs have the Astros signed over the last 5+ years of their rebuild? Gurriel, Reddick, Gattis, Beltran...Carlos Gomez, Gregerson and Verlander. Mostly high quality B tier guys. Gurriel and Verlander the two outliers. Lots of veterans to mix with the youth. If you look at this list, or 2004-05 with the Sox, you’d think anyone under 30 wouldn’t fit on a contender, lol. And yet I just saw someone write Moustakas was past his prime at age 29. That list, and what the Sox did with almost all vets other than Jenks, or the Royals adding James Shields, the Cubs adding Ben Zobrist/Lester/Lackey/Ross...each situation argues logically for the youth/veteran mix approach.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 04:38 PM) Just shows how laughable their armed teachers solution is. If cops are hesitant, what the hell is some old fart with no experience going to do? Only the best trained, motivated and certified will do. Top 10-20%. Ex military/police backgrounds, etc. Coaches, “deans,” administrators. Trump will even give them a little bonus, but probably not $250 or $500 per teacher coming out of his Indian real estate proceeds. How dare you': CNN's Camerota clashes with NRA's Loesch over her claim that media 'love' mass shootings https://www.yahoo.com/news/dare-cnns-camero...-151738545.html When did any news network argue that the NRA were child murderers? Fake news! I have no problem with people who own guns legally, but let's be clear: the guns that plague cities from Chicago to Philadelphia flood in from states with loose gun laws, such as Arizona, Utah, Mississippi, Alabama, Indiana and Kentucky. In many cases, these firearms are bought at gun shows, transported over state lines and sold via straw purchases to criminals. These guns cause havoc in communities of color, which Loesch doesn't know a damn thing about. Does the NRA believe gang members in crime-ridden cities are manufacturing guns in the basement? Via gun shows and astounding access to weaponry, the NRA and gun owners profit from this awful trade, even as gun victims die in cities like Chicago. In addition, where was the NRA when Philando Castile, who had a license to carry, was shot dead by a police officer? https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/23/opinions/wha...cane/index.html

Lol at the Matt Stairs comp for Burger. Well, that would be a pretty successful career offensively. Connor Walsh in...should be Vieira next.

Apparently Tyler Danish was in a pretty major automobile accident this offseason... Jimenez enters as pr for Abreu. No Rich King, he’s not a baserunning threat. Moncada k’s against Mr. Ambidextrous. Cordell’s rolls over on a pitch and hits weak forceout to 3b to end bases loaded threat. 10-5 still. Burger in at 3rd. Jimenez in RF. Tilson in CF. Leury at second. Jacob May in LF. Clark not looking particularly impressive, either. All four White Sox pitchers have surrendered runs. Tilson still not injured, yet.

Jimenez and Robert are expected to play in the game today, fwiw. Listed as Mlb.com (White Sox tv), WGN radio, SportsNet LA Chisox.com broadcast? According to my At Bat app, Dodgers’ feed is the only tv. Wilmer Font for LA.

Gun Violence in America
Bright Trump CPAC idea of the day... Because all teachers love their students and all students love their teachers, they will be much more effective shooters than an SRO cowering outside with no connection to those students. (Obviously doesn’t know most public schools well.) Love will help handguns outduel automatic weapons. Problem solved. More handgun sales and trainings for the NRA.

**President Trump 2018 Thread**
Ivanka Trump arrives at Olympics. So does a senator (Idaho/Risch) warning of 'biblical' destruction of North Korea. https://sports.yahoo.com/ivanka-trump-arriv...-094724382.html What garnered less attention from the gathered press was the identity of the man immediately to her left as she thanked Korea for the warm welcome. His face isn’t recognizable. But his words just a few days ago at the Munich Security Conference are pretty … notable … or alarming … or whatever word you choose to use. “If [a nuclear conflict with North Korea] starts, it’s going to be probably one of the one of the worst catastrophic events in the history of our civilization,” said Jim Risch, a Republican senator from Idaho. “It is going to be very, very brief. The end of it is going to see mass casualties the likes of which the planet has never seen. It will be of biblical proportions.” Interestingly, Danny Tarkanian, Jerry’s son...is now hammering Dean Heller in the NV GOP primary for close ties to “Democrat” Ivanka.

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 09:23 AM) It's one of the reasons why the bullpen strategy is interesting though. Some articles have noted either Haber or Fabian talking about how with bullpens being so valuable, draft relief arms might be an inefficiency to exploit. And we don't really count up our bullpen prospects because it seems so risk-filled and we have less info on them. But there is a conscious collection of guys such as Burdi, Hamilton, Veiera, Burr, Henzman, T. Johnson that all have interesting arms, as well as the likelihood of some failed starters maybe being dynamite in relief. It's a bit counting your chickens before they hatch, but sox specifically tried to make the above happen so it's interesting to see if it either works in the majors or provides them with trade chips. Royals finding market inefficiency in low-risk reclamations https://sports.yahoo.com/news/royals-findin...23694--mlb.html Similar concept...Chris Young, Blanton, Madson, Medlen (didn’t work out) etc. We have/had Kahnle (sold low?), Swarzak, Jennings, (Crain going further back) and now a TON of reclamation guys along with 10-12 legit young prospects (including Burdi/Cease/Lopez/Fulmer.) But that original KC pen was an absolute monster...Herrera, Hochevar, Collins, W.Davis and Holland. And the Twins actually did the same thing, two distinct cycles, from 2002-2010.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 23, 2018 -> 09:04 AM) The difference is that Matt Kemp's money only covers two years and would purchase a sub-market asset with 6 years of control. It would be spending money now to save money in the future. Then create a realistic option/opt after 2 or 3 years that’s acceptable to both sides, keeping him off the 2018/19 market. He would only be 31-32 then, so not precluding one big shot at a final lifetime deal of 4-5 years...
