5/18 White Sox @ Angels

FWIW, Parent and the coaching staff and Hector and Gimenez/Flowers need to come up with a better plan of attack. You've got a lefty throwing 93-96 MPH, you ATTACK hitters. You don't mess around with the bottom of the line-up with a 4-0 lead. You get ahead, then you throw the offspeed stuff and keep the hitters guessing. -

Ventura made the right move there...Jones is going to have to go 3 innings, though. -

God, our defense is just terrible. Two balls off Gimenez's glove that he's got to catch. Dunn at 1B letting one get past he should have had a play on. Sox outhitting the Angels 10-4 but on the verge of losing the lead. -

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ May 18, 2013 -> 03:50 PM) He just walked four straight. To boot, it was the 6-9 hitters. Learning experiences are nice but not at the expense of the game. He either doesn't have it today or he's in his own head. 3 straight. 4 in the game. He only had 8 the whole season before this appearance. -

Doesn't make any sense when you're throwing 94-95-96 to go with breaking balls and screwballs first when you have a 4-0 lead and the Angels on their heels. I think he only got one screwball across the entire game. Has a lot of movement on that pitch, but no idea where it's going. Got a little gunshy with the fastball when Callaspo pulled a 96 MPH down the LF line and started going all soft. -

Back to the bad Adam Dunn again... Six hits, but might end up with 0 runs for all that. 81 hits in 48 2/3 IP. Not so good. Hard to do, even if you're trying. Nice one, Langston. -

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ May 18, 2013 -> 02:46 PM) It should be fun to see a new infusion of players in the coming weeks. If all goes accordingly tonight in Charlotte Danks will be starting Friday, then Angel Sanchez and Beckham come back and maybe/hopefully Phegley gets called up. I wonder if well be able to keep Casper Wells, Greene and Giminez on Charlotte. Doesn't really matter. If Greene could play a decent 2B, would prefer him to Sanchez offensively. Wells will probably be on his 5th team this year. It's not like he has done much to warrant sticking around. Beckham's the most important name there, to get the defense back to normal. I don't think we'll see Phegley unless they're 100% ready to give up on Flowers. It's not a natural platoon. And it would really upset the pitching staff, in all likelihood. That said, need to get offense anywhere we can find it. -

Ramirez is really a lot more focused in the 2 spot these days. Nice. Ball rolled back towards the grass. -

Santiago at 95 that inning. Trumbo really slumping...very, very streaky hitter. Red hot first half last year, ice cold 2nd half. -

0 for 3 with RISP. 4/10 as a team but no runs against one of the five worst starters in baseball. Oh, well. Hector might as well throw a shutout to follow-up Sale. -

Viciedo 3 for his last 3. 18 for his last 39. Now at .297. Nice patience, Gimenez...jeez. Angels 3-9 in their last 12 home games. Picked up Chris Nelson off waivers from the Yankees. Would rather have Nelson (can play 3B, 2B, some short and all three OF positions) than Angel Sanchez, maybe even Keppinger, haha. First round draft pick in 2004 for COL. -

Yeah, the general consensus was he was going to be a decent hitter (maybe not enough power) but so-so fielder...at least before they saw him play. -

Santiago at an easy 94. DP ball, Gillaspie to Keppinger to Dunn. Inning over. Nice job Hector, pitching over more spotty defense by your teammates. -

Dunn with a terrible jump on that ball. Didn't react very well there....depth perception/sun might be the reason, according to Langston. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ May 18, 2013 -> 02:20 PM) Indians were in a lot better shape at this point last year. They finished a mere 22 out. Yes, but the White Sox also took 1st place on May 29th...and were in the process of going 13-1/14-2. Viciedo with a very good play there. Has made some surprising plays, but obviously he took a bad route (upon review numerous times) on Thursday night on the ball by Kendrick that was ruled a double. -

Knee, back issues...supposedly...with Paulie. I wish he would just pull himself out of the line-up and go on the DL, but its never been Paulie's style. -
STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS' FALLS SHORT OF EXPECTATIONS; 'IRON MAN 3' AND 'GATSBY' HOLD UP WELL May 18, 2013 04:43 AM by Phil Contrino (boxoffice.com) Despite posting strong early numbers on Friday, Star Trek Into Darkness has cooled down. The sci-fi extravaganza is now on pace for $68 million from Friday-Sunday after tallying $22 million on Friday. That will put its 4-day total at $81.5 million. Even Paramount was expecting $100 million in four days. Negative word of mouth doesn't seem to be the culprit. Into Darkness is creating plenty of buzz on Facebook and Twitter, and it boasts an "A" from CinemaScore. The impact of Iron Man 3's monster debut combined with the impending release of The Hangover Part III and Fast & Furious 6 could be to blame. 2009's Star Trek made $82.7 million during its first four full days of release, or approximately $87.5 million when adjusting for inflation. Iron Man 3 wasn't hurt by Into Darkness as much as it could have been. The Disney release fell 50 percent during its sophomore frame. Everything from this point on is icing on the cake for Iron Man 3 now that it has hit $1 billion globally. Being sandwiched in between Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness would be daunting for any film, but The Great Gatsby is holding up reasonably well in the face of it. The period flick is on pace to drop 54 percent during its sophomore frame. Gatsby will hit $100 million in North America by next weekend, and its overseas rollout is just beginning. WB's gamble seems to be paying off. www.ew.com/movies J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness beamed into first place Friday, pushing Tony Stark and his Iron Man suit into the No. 2 spot. The highly-anticipated sci-fi sequel, which opened wide on Wednesday, made an estimated $22.0 million on Friday in 3,868 locations, including 336 IMAX 3D locations, bringing its domestic total to $35.5 million. This was somewhat shy of expectations: The first Star Trek of the Abrams era opened in May 2009 to a $26.98 million Friday in 3,849 theaters. As a director, J.J. Abrams has a limited history at the box office. His only other efforts are 2011′s relatively low-budget ($50 million) Super 8, and 2006′s Mission: Impossible III. But, big things are still expected from this sequel, which cost an estimated $190 million to make. With the help of the original cast — most of whom are bigger stars now — and writing team (including new addition Damon Lindelof), strong reviews from critics and an impressive “A” CinemaScore, and the tease of a menacing new villain in the form of Benedict Cumberbatch, the sci-fi epic is on pace for a $60 million three-day weekend.

Please pray for the Mariners' bullpen. Incredible comeback, three homers, one in the 8th, the other two with two outs and nobody on base against Chris Perez in the top of the 9th (Ibanez and Smoak) but the resilient Indians loaded the bases quickly against Oliver Perez. No outs. Three chances to score. Indians will be at 7 games over (19-7 stretch, best in the majors during that timeframe)...had 34,000+ in attendance Friday night against the M's. Indians win. Grounder to SS...Ryan made a great play but the throw hopped and Montero pulled his foot off home plate. -
Darn, she's married, haha. I have one cure for Dave Wilder and the shaving scandal. Put her in charge of our Dominican Training Academy. In all seriousness, it would be cool if they could get her to shoot a commercial for the White Sox. Sounds like a fun job for Brooks or Rongey to track her down. We need all the celebrity endorsements we can get these days. At the very least, she can do some spots for Orgullo Sox, the Spanish side of the chisox.com website. Or invite her out to the stadium to throw out the first pitch when they have "Orgullo Sox Night," I think it used to be around the 4th of July.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 18, 2013 -> 09:42 AM) I thought he was going to say he almost died but Yaz gave him CPR Since he started broadcasting, I wonder how many times Hawk has name-dropped Mantle or Maris during a Sox program? Over that same amount of time, I wonder how many White Sox players have been mentioned by the YES Network? Other than NESN/Red Sox, I can't think of another team's broadcaster/s that talk more about the Yankees' glory years. TOO BAD THERE'S NO WAY TO GET A COPY OF THAT PICTURE AND MAKE IT AN AVATAR. -
It would be like if you saw a full-length column recently saying that the White Sox should release Blake Tekotte or Deunte Heath. Columns like that are only interesting if there's two sides to it. For example, if there was another compelling pitching prospect that they were stowing away in the minors to avoid his arbitration clock or whatever...but the Marlins just suck, so that's probably not the issue, as they already have Fernandez up with the big league club. Kind of as if he only recently discovered the Marlins are a bad bad franchise and organization, and he's surprised they would carry such a player on their roster, as if they're deliberately insulting fans with his presence (not that they haven't done 10,000 other things to insult their fanbase.) And the Marlins respond, sort of. Marlins Designate Jon Rauch For Assignment By Max Fogle [May 17 at 9:28pm CST] The Marlins have announced that right-hander Jon Rauch has been designated for assignment. The move creates a spot on the 40-man roster for Duane Below, who was recently claimed off waivers from the Tigers. Rauch signed a one-year, $1MM deal with the Marlins in February, but pitched to a 6.89 ERA with 8.0 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 15 2/3 innings. The 34-year-old owns a career 3.88 ERA with 7.2 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 over 594 big league innings. Before he signed with Miami, the Brewers were among the clubs with interest in Rauch.
