QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 11:16 AM) I tweeted to him a couple of times today. I fully expect this to be blamed on KW at some point. I tweeted PETA. Between the animal sacrifice groups, Vigilia Mambisa and the anti-gay discrimination groups from Key West, they could have quite a motorcade coming to protest Ozzie directly at his press/media conference tomorrow. Don't think they'll be holding it at the Clevelander Bar.
-
Yeah, the Sox created an environment around him that was too supportive/lenient and now that he's in the real world, he forgot what it's like to be held accountable for his words and actions. That the White Sox didn't hold him to his post-Mariotti diversity training follow-through program, etc. Will Cowley cover the press conference tmrw in-person?

http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/...castro-comments Pressure is mounting, already has changed strategy from waiting until back in Miami on Friday to flying back to Miami specifically to answer ALL media questions tmrw, and invite essentially everyone in Miami to cross-examine him. "Guillen says he has lost a lot of sleep the past two nights thinking about this situation and feeling bad." The Marlins just spent 90 seconds of their own pre-game show doing more damage control. Supposedly he went to the Marlins and told them he wanted to fly back on his own during the offday but not to talk to the media, but address Miamians/Cuban-Americans directly. HAHA. It's on, Juan Pierre vs. Ozzie today. More exciting than Darvish/Ichiro to leadoff the game later tonight.

”I’ve got a real weird religion,” Guillen said. Weird? ”Santeria,” he said. It’s a bloody religion, imported from Africa. Guillen believes in animal sacrifice. Heck, if Chicago fans had known it would work like this, they might have endorsed human sacrifice. You kill animals, Ozzie? ”Back in my country [Venezuela], yes, I do,” Guillen said. He realized how this sounded and blurted, unsolicited, just in case you didn’t like it: “Too bad.” You kill with your own hands? ”I pay people to do it,” Guillen said. What kind of animals? ”Depends on what you need,” he said. And finally: ”You bleed, I’m there,” he said. http://www.spikesnstars.com/forums/index.p...ic=42872.0;wap2 http://www.cantstopthebleeding.com/santeri...ger-of-the-year

"Is it true you sacrificed an animal a couple of days ago for good luck this season as part of your religion of Santeria?" the reporter said. "I'm not answering that," Guillen said. He didn't, either. Nor did he deny it. More new. More interesting. http://articles.latimes.com/2007/jun/26/sports/sp-santeria26 Guillen on Santeria religion (old article, but interesting)...I'm sure PETA is just waiting to join the protest Tuesday in defense of the animals being sacrificed by Pedro Cerrano. Didn't know that both Miguel Cabrera and Jose Contreras are strong followers of this religion, as well. Now that some Marlins fans have come to see Ozzie Guillen as an adversary, we need to prepare in case we find ourselves cornered by the powerful Babalao. Fortunately, at a recent Little Havana garage sale, I came a cross a wonderful research paper, ‘A Study of Divination within Santería, an Afro-Cuban Religion, as a Psychotherapeutic System’ by Lawrence J. Levy, M.S. While reading the paper, I alternately imagined myself as Guy Montag and Beldar Conehead. It was heady stuff. Literally. A core Santería belief is the following: The seat of the soul is the head, and therefore to strengthen the ‘Orisha’ that lives in the head of every human, it must be fed a mixture of grated coconut, honey, and cocoa butter. This mixture is placed on the head and then covered by a white hat or kerchief. The process is called ‘rogación de la cabeza.’ Bang, there it was, our Ozzie Guillen defense kit.

Do Cuban-Americans protest the Marlins a week into their rebirth in Miami? Should the baseball commissioner's office step in, as it did when then-Cincinnati owner Marge Schott said Hitler did some good things at first but, "went too far?" Or do you just shrug it off, as everyone did when Charles Barkley once said, "I hate white people." Barkley, like Guillen, has the rare ability to say anything and have people not get angry or offended. Guillen, however, was worried enough about these comments to call reporters into his office before the Marlins played in Cincinnati and apologize for his comments. Well, mostly apologize. Sort of. You decide. He began: "There's a statement about, it's a magazine come out, quoting me, 'I love Fidel,' '' he said. "Kind of funny (expletive). But it's not funny. I want to send a statement to the public … "I think when I was talking about that specific man, it was personal. It wasn't politic. I don't believe in politics. I come from a place (Venezuela) that has been very, very struggle in politics. I'm against the way he (Castro) treats people and the way treats his country for a long time. I'm against that 100 percent." Later, he said this: "The reason I say I admire him is because a lot of people want to get rid of this guy and they couldn't yet. It was kind of personal, not political." So he apologized for his statements and is against what Castro did politically. But he still admires him personally. Got it? sunsentinel.com/sports I would guess he was thinking in terms of retaining power, like a manager/executive/political leader are all one and the same, and being "him against the world" like Ozzie and his persecuted family was have felt the last 2-3 years in Chicago....that he admired the idea of someone holding onto power for over 50 years, when he only managed 8. By Juan C. Rodriguez / Sun Sentinel Monday, April 9, 2012 - Added 3 minutes ago CINCINNATI — Florida Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said he approached the Marlins’ Spanish language radio broadcast team of Felo Ramirez and Yiki Quintana, and offered a personal apology for his Fidel Castro remarks. Both Quintana and Ramirez, a Hall of Fame broadcaster, are Cuban-born. Guillen did not speak directly with Gaby Sanchez, who is the son of Cuban exiles. Sanchez said he knows Guillen doesn’t admire the Cuban despot and "it’s all drama for nothing." In this week’s Time Magazine, Guillen is first quoted as saying he loved Castro and later that he respects him. Saturday, he apologized for those remarks. He plans to have another press conference when the team returns home on Friday. Will Jay Mariotti and Joe Cowley be in attendance? Will Vigilia Mambisa spark a direct confrontation in hopes of getting him fired in his first week as the manager? Stay tuned.

Currently running at 42% of the voters saying Ozzie might have done permanent damage already. Poor Greg, the honeymoon lasted less than one week. It won't get any easier playing an angry Phils team for their home opening series that just got beaten 2/3 in Pittsburgh. One can only hope Cowley comes out with a column trying to defend him and upsets the Hispanic community in Chicago as well.

QUOTE (High Mileage @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 02:49 AM) I think the bullpen will be fine. Losing Soria blows, of course, but we have 3-4 guys who could take his place. It's Broxton's job to lose, but if he sucks or gets hurt, then Greg Holland should get a shot. If he fails, then there's Crow. And then Louis Coleman. I wouldn't be against Tim Collins getting a shot either but hopefully it won't go that far. I think there is a really good chance Soria we won't see Soria in a Royals' uniform. They have an $8 million option on him for next year, and this is his second Tommy John surgery. The rotation will be the real issue. Bruce Chen Luke Hochevar Jonathan Sanchez Danny Duffy Luis Mendoza Felipe Paulino When did Mendoza take the 5th spot from Paulino? Hochevar pitched well against a very good Angels team, same with Sanchez. Duffy has a ton of talent, but it's going to be growing pains for him over the next year and one-half probably. And you wonder how long the Bruce Chen Magic Show can continue? Then again, guys like Jamie Moyer got away with it for the entire time they were in their 30's and even early 40's.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Apr 9, 2012 -> 01:05 AM) Are you replying to your own post? I've never seen 2 people write like that, putting every statement on an individual line. You're the only 2 people on the interwebs that write like and you're posting in the same thread? I smell a conspiracy. Greg and Mcgrad can't be the same person...unless they're extremely talented writers, lol. Their comment style and tone is too diametrically-opposed and antithetical to each other to be co-authors.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,3273164.story A blue collar kid that fits in perfectly with the new direction of the Sox... According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Santiago became the first rookie since the save rule was instituted in 1969 to save his team's first win for a first-year manager. -
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/09/business...wanted=1&hp Interesting. As one of many that grew up collecting baseball cards in the late 70's/early 80's and has case after case in my bedroom closet and stowed under the bed still, it's very important to figure out ways to integrate with young children so that they develop a lifelong love for the game between age 5-12.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 8, 2012 -> 10:21 PM) God damn you're fast. I botched that initial post and couldn't correct it before you quoted me. That's because I trained under AA in the special secret society SABR school (aka S5) We had to type 150-180 WPM to gain admission to the program.

Who should Romney choose as VP candidate?
caulfield12 replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (jasonxctf @ Apr 8, 2012 -> 09:10 PM) he's going to pick the governor of New Mexico. 1. He needs help with women. 2. He needs help with Latinos 3. Will try and make New Mexico into a swing state Susana Martinez or Ramirez or whatever her name is. Don't count on it. He needs to worry more about Ohio and Florida than NM. It's too naked a play for Hispanics and women to reverse everything said throughout this primary season, especially about the border fence and how Romney agrees 100% with the AZ laws regarding immigration, as well as some of the harsher comments about the Dream Act. There's no way to walk that back now. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 8, 2012 -> 10:13 PM) The Royals can hit the baseball. It's going to be tough for the Sox to beat them this year ... again. That is all. It was tough for the Angels, too. More was expected out of that team than the White Sox coming into 2011. If Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain play up to their abilities, they're clearly going to take 2nd place and finish with 83-86 victories. The bullpen's a mess though, with lots of questions surrounding Soria (out for year), Crow and Broxton.

Bubba Watson (and answer to the thread topic) isn’t quite your prototypical “Bubba,” but he’s the closest they’ve ever seen at Augusta National. He recently rewarded his success by purchasing the original General Lee of “Dukes of Hazzard” fame and is restoring it. He once won a bet that he couldn’t drive a golf ball out of Sanford Stadium, home of his beloved alma mater University of Georgia football team (he won that one). His first words at the green jacket ceremony were, “Go Dawgs!” His wife, Angie, was in Florida, watching on TV, trying to get Caleb to take a nap. She was trying to figure out what he was going to do to celebrate, “You know he’s gonna put on the green jacket and drive down something in the General Lee,” she told the Golf Channel. And as for next year’s champions dinner, where he’ll pick the menu? “Might be In-n-Out cheeseburgers,” Angie said. http://sports.yahoo.com/golf/pga/news?slug..._masters_040812

QUOTE (jeffro2525 @ Apr 8, 2012 -> 09:15 PM) Considering everyone stays healthy...Rios starting 145 games, Viciedo 140, DeAza 140, Fuko in the 90-100 neighborhood (maybe spelling at DH as well) would not stop the development of anyone, and actually allow Fuko to earn the money that he is making as well...which he isn't getting 1 AB every three games. If Fuko is such a hot starter in April, then by all means...get the guy in there. We certainly start enough slow starters in April. If Fukudome gets that many games, he's the biggest Sox payroll bargain this side of Ramirez/Jenks/Santos/Loiaza/Humber.

QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Apr 8, 2012 -> 10:09 PM) If this team has to rely on that, they have no chance. None of those guys that started for the Sox could replace anyone in the Texas lineup tonight. Good grief this is going to be a long season and maybe a long decade unless we get rescued by a billionaire Sox fan. Imagine talking about Caberra and Fielder in our lineup rather than Flowers and Morel. LOL. Where was this post last night? And who is Caberra, is that a new Puerto Rican rum brand? The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox would love to trade line-ups with the Rangers and Tigers, too. Go back a couple of seasons, everyone thought the Twins were set up to dominate for a decade with their new stadium opening and two MVP's on the same team. Where are they now, exactly? A billionaire Sox fan isn't going to spend $150-200 million on payroll, either. That's a foolish business decision...and for the same reasons that Ricketts hasn't spent a ton of money on the major league roster on the Northside, either. P.S. Did you just call in to berate and harangue Rongey on the post-game show?

QUOTE (sunofgold @ Apr 8, 2012 -> 12:52 PM) Seems like there are a ton of ex-White Sox prospects/players out there: Hudson, Gio Gonzalez, BMAC, Boone Logan, Richards, Santos, Ryan Sweeney, Getz (lol!) Clayton "Don't Confuse Me with Paul" Richard(s) "They've got pitching," Washington told reporters Sunday night after the Rangers' 5-0 victory over the Sox. "On the defensive end, they don't make any mistakes. And they've got some power in that lineup. "If you've got pitching and you can catch the ball, you're always in ballgames. They certainly have pitching -- some serious power arms coming out of the bullpen." Mark Gonzales, Chicago Tribune White Sox hitting coach Jeff Manto wasn't surprised that Alex Rios' home run Saturday night sailed over the center-field fence. And Rangers manager Ron Washington believes Rios might be in a good spot, especially if he keeps his hands as high as he did in Toronto. "He's going to do a lot more than what he did (Saturday) night," Washington said Sunday. Manto believes Rios' homer might bode well for him and the rest of the Sox's hitters who often get caught trying to pull the ball too frequently. "His every effort is to get that ball to the middle of the field, and sometimes it works," Manto said. "Sometimes he'll miss-hit a ball and it will go to left field. But he's been great to work with. "He knows what he's doing. It's a feel for him. He's a feel hitter, and that's where he feels most comfortable. It would not be a good idea for me to say otherwise. When you feel something, you stay with it, and he's in the right spot." Rios admitted he tends to turn his left shoulder too frequently. "I've been a pull hitter for so long that sometimes it makes it hard to put the ball over there," Rios said. "I've worked on a couple things in spring training. Hopefully we'll see some results from it."

QUOTE (jeffro2525 @ Apr 8, 2012 -> 10:06 PM) DeAza and Viciedo will still get their starts and AB's...but if Fuko is our best offensive option right now I don't see any reason why he can't platoon with all of the outfielders. Giving Rios, DeAza and Viciedo days off during the week. I really doubt it would stunt the growth of Alejandro or Dayan if they sit once a week. And until it is categorically proven that this team sucks as bad as prognosticators say, then the best possible line-up should be trotted out there. Sure, it's where you get to 2-3-4 games per week sitting that you're going to get arguments from the "developmental year" side of the ledger folks.
-
QUOTE (jeffro2525 @ Apr 8, 2012 -> 09:59 PM) Between the Bulls and Sox...I'd say a pretty damn cruddy Easter. Still, a lot worse for Marlins, Red Sox, Yankees, Giants and Braves fans than for us. Each of those fanbases expect a lot more than we do out of their teams in 2011.
-
That's where it gets tricky. DeAza's just turning 28, but he is a building block for the future? Maybe, maybe not. By not playing Rios or platooning him with Fukudome, you assure that he'll (Rios) be on our roster again in 2013 and 2014.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 8, 2012 -> 07:11 PM) I think the general public cares a lot more about a winner than having an 80 win team but watching Sammy Sosa Cespedes hit a HR in a 6-1 loss. We're not talking about Cub fans here. At least we would have that monster home run to talk about at the water cooler while waiting for tmrw's game in CLE, instead of how anemic our line-up is with RISP and how Gavin continues the trend of April suckage.
