Halladay Superthread
QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 04:21 PM) In my proposal, we have Ramirez going to Toronto for Halladay. So we wouldn't have to bench anyone. That's the proposal that requires us to play Nix/Fields at 3B. Which is STILL infinitely better than dealing Alexei and Floyd/Danks, because trading either young starter blows yet another hole in our rotation for the not-so-distant future. If we're 100% sure Quentin comes back healthy, then you can THINK about acquiring Halladay. Otherwise, you're going to cripple the future of this franchise in uncertain economic times for a 50% probability of making the playoffs (when Minnesota doesn't play NY/BOS/TB and Detroit ends with MIN and us at home) and then the certainly higher than 12.5% chance of us getting to the World Series and winning it with the Top 4 we'd have in Halladay/Buehrle/Danks/Floyd...assuming we could make the trade WITHOUT Floyd or Danks, and just Ramirez. So do you make the trade with roughly 1/8 odds of both winning the ALCD and then winning it all COMBINED, it create a much, much lower probability of having a team that could win it all in 2011/2012/2013??

Ozzie and his Usage of Aaron Poreda.
QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 03:54 PM) did you ever think Ozzie, instead of the ridiculous claim that he was setting him up to fail, put him in a tough spot to prove himself. Let's say Poreda gets out of that jam then Ozzie has another viable lefty he can bring in tough spots. Poreda didn't get the job done, so be it. When you think about it, Ozzie put him a no-lose situation. If he fails, like he did, he's a rookie in tough spot.No biggie. If he comes through, he shows he merits more time. Bingo, winner winner chicken dinner.

Ozzie and his Usage of Aaron Poreda.
QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 03:57 PM) There's a difference in a guy with 4 years of mlb closing experience and a guy who's been a reliever all of 11 innings in his entire pro career. Poreda still is working on his offspeed pitches and has control issues. He's not used to coming into games with runners on base. He was a walk (or two) just waiting to happen. Obviously, that was NOT the time for Jenks. Thornton has pitched a lot recently. Who would you have used instead of Poreda in that situation, with those two batters coming up? Pena, Carrasco, Dotel or Linebrink? If we constantly have to use Dotel and Linebrink in games where we're trailing, then they're going to be toast by the end of the season...

Ozzie and his Usage of Aaron Poreda.
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 02:45 PM) Given how he was admittedly reluctant to do so when Becks first came up (we had at least a couple threads on that), I'd say the answer for the first couple weeks was "Edict from above" and now it's "my God he's just that good". Ozzie's basic defense with Beckham (and he addressed this yesterday in the post-game) is that he wanted to "protect the kid" and he didn't want the media to get too ahead of themselves in setting expectations too high for Gordon. Fair enough. Obviously, they've seen MUCH more of Poreda, both in the minors, Spring Training and now with the big league club, and there are still serious reservations about using him in key situations. It's just as likely their options in AAA/AA are worse...which was yet another reason for the acquisition of Pena, even though he's obviously right-handed (and insurance for Linebrink or the possible trade of Dotel to another contender).

Ozzie and his Usage of Aaron Poreda.
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 03:43 PM) If Ozzie doesn't have confidence in him right now, then what's he doing on the big league roster anyway? Because in our X-Files alternative universe, Ozzie and/or Cooper don't want him up with the big league club, but KW is forcing their hands.

Ozzie and his Usage of Aaron Poreda.
QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 03:39 PM) He set up Poreda to fail today. He hasn't pitched in a week, he's already wild. Let's throw him in there rusty with the bases loaded! It gives Ozzie a reason to not pitch him or have him sent to AAA. So Ozzie deliberately set up Jenks to fail yesterday as well, because he hadn't pitched for a week since the ASB? These are professional athletes paid to play a kid's game, why should they be treated like babies and their failures rationalized? He just didn't get the job done. If there's a BA/Aaron Poreda/Sean Tracey "conspiracy," why does Ozzie keep playing Gordon Beckham, a rookie, every single game?

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) Guillen's still an idiot, but I didn't call him a psychopath -- just you. I'm amazed you were able to stay on track without being sidetracked by the odd thoughts running through your mind that make it onto this message board. Apparently you've never heard of the associative theory...but a bunch of people talking about having sex with Megan Fox, Anne Hathaway or Shawn Johnson, those are perfectly normal things to talk about in PHT. I think name-calling belonged at wsi, not over here? Do you think you will ever find an instance of me calling a poster, a "psychopath"? Seriously, feel free to disagree with what I write, block me, ban me for not loving Brian Anderson or Aaron Poreda, but at least try to be civil.

Ozzie and his Usage of Aaron Poreda.
There is your answer. Ozzie is an idiot...but I am just a psychopath, and so is Ozzie, because he doesn't know what's best for the White Sox, apparently. But posters on a message board can see something our own scouts, manager, coaches and front office cannot.

Ozzie and his Usage of Aaron Poreda.
Ozzie's an idiot? Because KW gives him Anderson and Wise and no other options but Jerry Owens and DeWayne Wise for CF this year? We have to have the lowest OPS (combined) for CF of any team in all of MLB, right? I suppose Ozzie's also an idiot for not starting Anderson everyday, too. Sure, Ozzie trusts the veteran players, it's because they have a proven track record or history of coming through for him. When Beckham was first up, he didn't play in 2-3 games over a two week span and everyone was acting like Guillen was benching him or abusing him or should be fired for not playing him every single day. Well, when's the last time Fields played 3B and Beckham sat? I'm sure Guillen is 180 degrees more confident in Clayton Richard getting key outs down the stretch out of the bullpen than he would be with Aaron Poreda, simply because he's spoon fed Aaron the most favorable match-ups and tried to build his confidence (but Aaron never has pitched key/clutch innings like Richard didn against TB in the playoffs)...just like he TRIED to do with Anderson, Fields, Nix and Getz (not to mention Lillibridge unless there was simply no other option for CF) this season. Honestly, did we all expect to be competitive this season knowing that Anderson, Fields, Getz and Nix would all be getting significant playing time and that Carlos Quentin would miss roughly 2/3rd's of the first 90 games? This has been one of Guillen's best managing jobs to date, but he's an idiot, I guess.

Under the radar pitchers
If the Pirates are going to continue to make idiotic moves like the Aramis Ramirez trade to their division rival, then that franchise won't continue to exist much longer. It's one thing to trade away McLouth/Bay or to give up on Van Benschoten, it's quite another to jettison your younger pitching core. If you gut that franchise any further, the fans might never come back in significant numbers to support a team in Pittsburgh ... in a region like CLE/DET that has been so adversely affected by the economic downturn.

Halladay Superthread
QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 06:52 AM) If the sox wanted to only win in 2009 and 2010, sure, the trade makes some sense. But trading Danks [under team control for decade for 1/4 of what Roy will make post 2010, not to mention Alexei], is absurd. I've talked about trading Alexei before. But in the right deal, for a young potential ace, such as to Boston for one, two of their young arms. Not a 32 yr old who'll be making $20 + mill. Granted Roy's a stud. But he's a stud that stands to make 1/4 of the Sox entire team payroll once his contract expires. But Boston is quickly learning the utility of holding onto their younger players/prospects...to expect a Bowden or Buchholz, when they already have some decent infield depth on the left side, enough to jettison Lugo without thinking twice. They also learned something from watching Hanley Ramirez become one of the 3 or so most dynamic players in the game today.

Another good thing about Guillen, he doesn't abuse his starters
I don't know what's going on (Linebrink with a dead arm or just not 100%?) with our pen recently, but I'm sure glad KW picked up Pena to give us an additional option in the pen and also someone that could replace Linebrink in the 7th and 8th innings. Linebrink gave up another hit today and Ozzie is going with the quick hook now, whereas he had a lot of patience with him against the Cubs with that 5-1 lead.

Sox Should Trade for OFer by deadline
QUOTE (beck72 @ Jul 18, 2009 -> 03:38 PM) Getting Dukes goes against everything the sox have tried to build this decade. Dukes' problems are well-documented and has serious issues. We definitely have learned from bringing Wil Cordero, Royce Clayton, Albert Belle, D'Angelo Jimenez, Nick Swisher and Kenny Lofton into this organization.

Getting the gang together
Well, as long as we don't bring back Mackowiak, Everett or Erstad, I'm fine with this move. Heck, sign him and stick him in Birmingham for a month to impart wisdom on Viciedo, whatever works. Willie Harris is also on the trade market. But please, no Geoff Blum at 3B, unless it's as a PHer.

The Official 7/17 Sox Withdrawal Relief Game Thread vs. Baltimore
Looks like a very consistent 95 MPH four-seam fastball and 88-90 MPH slider. Nice arm to add to our bullpen to "back up" Linebrink and Dotel...I'm liking this move more and more. When's the last time we had a 1-2-3 ninth inning? Not very often this season.
-
The Official 7/17 Sox Withdrawal Relief Game Thread vs. Baltimore
Please let's NOT have to use Jenks in this game with runners on base. Nasty, 89 MPH slider/cutter to get Wieters. Keep it up Pena.

Please have that be the end of your White Sox career, DeWayne Wise. Thanks for the memories, though...in the last two months of 2008, the homers against DET and then TB in the playoffs and your separated shoulder catch.

Getz got too anxious and swung at a pitch way up and out of the strikezone. Let's get these two insurance runs Gordon. Don't like taking a walk with Wise coming up next...pitching around him already.

The Official 7/17 Sox Withdrawal Relief Game Thread vs. Baltimore
Wise made one good play all season out there....the ball he separated his shoulder on in DET, that probably saved that game for us. Other than that, he has no place on a big league field this year. KW, certainly there's SOMEONE better, SOMEWHERE. You seemingly passed on Josh Anderson, he would have been a heckuva lot better threat than Wise for us this year...not to mention Jackson and Anderson both ended up with the Tigers.
-
The Official 7/17 Sox Withdrawal Relief Game Thread vs. Baltimore
Why the HELL is Anderson not in this game right now? Ozzie, you suck WORSE than Wise not putting pulling Wise off the field in the middle of the inning and putting BA in.... For having such a "great" bullpen, we sure can't comfortably close out games against even the worst teams in the AL on our home field.

Bobby Jenks. Esteban Loaiza. Jayson Nix. Scotty Pods (2nd time around). All acquired at NO cost to the Sox. And, by extension, Contreras through NY. Alexei putting up RBI's Juan Uribe style....2 on the night on 2 sac flies. This is the first meeting of the season between Twins and Rangers, Twins take tonight's game 5-3 to momentarily move into a tie with us. D. Wise, BOO!!!!

That's what happens when you go with 7 out of 8 71-72 MPH curveballs to SLAYER. You die. Wise sporting a .523 OPS coming into this AB. I think Beckham can chase down Romero and Andrus and hold off Wieters for ROY....he's going to need to put up at least 55-60 RBI's by the end of the season.

But not farther out than Borchard's? The biggest bombs I have seen hit at USCF were by Pasqua, McGwire and Canseco. PS: Maybe Cooper can fix Rich Hill and Felix Pie? PS2: I think we can live with Chris Getz at a 690-710 OPS.
