QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 10:46 AM) I like Gio....I just don't see him as a #2 pitcher in the majors as people are pencilling him in for around here. If he ends up being a #4 for the next 5 years, then I have no problem at all with that. And yes, Adam Russell is quite overrated by some also. His best opportunity to help this team is as a power righty set-up man. I do like saying my comments are ignorant though, as everything I said about Gio was relayed to me by about 5 minor league experts. We need to call him up to AAA, as pitching in a hitter's park will give him a better example of what it's like to pitch at the Cell. If he's around Jon Garland's numbers for the first five years of his MLB career, stays healthy, and keeps improving like Jon has, then I think anyone would be happy with that...and his K/IP ratio will definitely be much better too, which helps offset some of the HR numbers in the Cell. Garland would be one year or so ahead of him in age and development because of how he tore through the minors so fast, but Gio isn't so far behind and could be inserted into the rotation with a Buehrle trade. I'm not buying the Zito hype, but I don't see him as a 4/5 in the same way as Broadway, McCullough, Phillips, Haeger, etc. I think #3 is pretty realistic, but am also concerned with durability questions. The other benefit of our bullpen problems is we can keep bringing the youngsters up to get their feet wet coming out of the pen. I wouldn't be opposed to trading Floyd out for any of Masset, Bukvich or Prinz (I'll give Day a couple more weeks to seal his fate)...and I think we need to send Masset down and begin his career as a starter ASAP. That's where his most value is to this organization IMO.

Where KW is going with this team

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 08:48 AM) If Durham was a salary dump, why did KW pick up the biggest portion of his remaining contract that the rules allow? He thought Adkins was a stud. I'll rephrase that: 1) He knew that Durham was no longer in the picture and he wanted to see if Harris could be the starter, and he needed to open the position up 2) He thought the compensation system was going to be overhauled and no draft picks would be available in the following draft if he held onto, and he still would have needed to offer arbitration...although Durham certainly would have gone to another team IMO at a higher salary, as eventually happened with SFG 3) Harris was making the minimum 4) Jon Adkins that summer (2002) in Sacramento...6.03 ERA, 139 hits in 97 IP and a 1.77 WHIP. KW did think he was getting a "power arm" and a steal and "outscouted" himself, because Adkins and Felix Diaz threw about as hard as Danks or Barcelo after his surgery. QUOTE(GreenSox @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 09:30 AM) Is he a number 2? If so, and if Floyd is a top prospect, we got a steal. I've been waiting for Floyd to come up - why not? I can see leaving Gio down, but unless Floyd's hurt, why not? As for Floyd, of course Kenny wouldn't make a deal unless he thought it a good deal - and that would mean that he thought highly of Floyd. But Floyd was damaged goods and wouldn't command a top prospect price. Hopefully, he will he become a major league pitcher. So we have Rowand, Garcia and a prospect for Thome and Floyd. Assuming that we just don't re-sign MB and Dye, are we going to get a first round draft choice for each in compensation? I know compensation to some extent depends on whether they are class A FAs (which I assume they are, although some real mediocre ballplayers have been class As) (that's almost the deal, not quite as the years are different, but almost). Looks pretty reasonable, overall. Would look even better if Floyd could pitch major league baseball. I have a feeling we'll find out soon enough, and it might be before the ASB, because the Day, Prinz, Bukvich trio is going to need to be replaced at some point. AAArdsma just gave up a three run bomb the other night (I think it was a gamewinner or walkoff) so it's not going to be him until August or Sept. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 09:33 AM) Well considering how bad Garcia has looked this season at times (especially last night against the Royals), suddenly that trade doesn't look so bad right now does it? And quickman, has your opinion on Gio increased at all based on what he has done this season? I'm expecting a no answer here FWIW. Freddy Garcia (he of the $10 million contract) in his last three starts against the Royals, from Aug. 2nd of last year through last night 0-3 record 16.3 IP, 26 hits!, 15 ER, 5 BB, 11 K's 8.27 ERA That's enough of a reason why the Floyd/Gio deal was a good one, if we get anything out of either one at the major league level or via trade in return. -
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 07:04 PM) Of course. But big signing bonuses + Guillen's influence = something no one else can match. A deciding factor in Felix Hernandez signing with Seattle was the presence of Freddy Garcia. If we can't use our World Series championship or notable manager to draw in talent, in addition to enough funds available to sign talent, then it's a disgrace. I've already set the expectations of a legitimate #1 or #2 starter emerging by 2010 from Venezuela. It's time someone does their job down there. And none of this answers the question of where our VSL team went. If we're not willing to outspend the Detroit Tigers, this organization seriously has questionable, Cub-esque priorities, especially after winning one WS. I think a lot of it has to do with the unstable/unfriendly political situation down there. I lived in Colombia all last year, which is right next door, and I'm not sure you want to put your ballplayers through some of that stress...of course, the Uribe accusation/ransom/kidnapping type of situation can happen in any Latin country, and, if you believe the movies, Slovakia as well, lol.

QUOTE(GreenSox @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 07:46 AM) There is zero chance that Williams is fired. Williams hasn't been the most adept dumper of veterans in July. He hasn't done it often, but, as I recall, he basically gave Durham, Lofton, Howry and Baldwin away...didn't get any serious talent on paper or otherwise for any of those guys. wrong Barry/Berry Onan Masaoka Jon Adkins Frank Francisco (but we let him get away in Everett II) a Korean pitcher whose name escapes me, Byeong Ak- or something like that Felix Diaz Baldwin was done by then, Durham was a salary dump, Howry's arm wasn't back to 100% yet, Lofton was old We should get a good deal for Buehrle if we choose to go that route, or have no other choice -

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 11:17 PM) Criticizing Danks now is stupid. But I imagine that his decrease is from Cooper. Cooper telling him to throw more strikes! Not necessarily a bad thing, but definitely not a surefire good thing. I think Danks' fastball has picked up some life more recently. With Danks, it seems it's going to come down to control and pitch counts at this point in his young career. I looked at it more like Danks topped out at 92-93 (which is accurate) and is comfortably around 89-90-91, a notch above Buehrle, which is exactly where he is... I know that he's picked it up a couple of MPH since April. -
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jun 9, 2007 -> 12:36 AM) I doubt Anderson would be worse than Owens/Sweeney/Terrero in the 3rd OF spot. But lesser of four evils or "maybe not worse than" doesn't get you much, at best, a .500 ballclub. I guess Anderson has now become the poster child (like Rowand) for "what ifs," and I'm not buying it. The same people who think we would be contending with Rowand instead of Thome are probably arguing Ozzie's "vendetta" against Anderson is killing the organization. The problem with all the anti-Anderson stuff is 1) KW is either complicit in it, 2) KW has no balls to go against Guillen's wishes for the ballclub...3) KW and OG are on the same page, for better or worse, despite what everyone here thinks and wishes. Or 4) there is a real rift between KW and OG and we just don't know about it.

QUOTE(briguy27 @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 10:18 PM) or joe girardi as manager So he could ruin all of our young pitchers? No thanks.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 10:09 PM) Ozzie had a lot to do with who's on this roster also though. He's the one who needs his "speed" guy at the top of the order. He's the one who didn't want to give Anderson an extended shot this year. He's the one that never gave Gload the chance to see what he could do as a leadoff hitter. In no way am I blaming Ozzie for how bad this talent level is....but he isn't exactly out of the loop on these decisions. The only time this line-up has looked decent recently were the two games that Owens got on base, with his no walks. Anderson or Gload playing would make this team either a fifth place or 3rd place team, but definitely not a 90 win squad. Even the Royals see the writing on the wall and are already thinking about trading him, Reggie Sanders, Emil Brown, Sweeney, Berroa, etc. Having a Gload, Mackowiak or Catalanotto type leading off would be "okay," but I hardly think the Tigers or Indians would be cringing in their boots. If the "magic cure" this year was keeping Gload and playing him nearly everyday, there's not much I can say about how far we've come from winning the World Series...and both Gload and Anderson have suffered injuries now too.

QUOTE(Brian @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 06:49 PM) Knee Fluid build-up, they gave him a shot and drained it, apparently he's still having some problems with it, as it was supposed to be only one game out of action for him.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 02:18 AM) Earlier I attempted to browse through the statistics of our Venezuelan summer league team and noticed our split squad with Baltimore isn't present. Does anyone know why this is? Please don't say they've abandoned it in the one damn country the influence of Guillen and the White Sox should hold a monopoly on outgoing talent. Big $$$ for signing bonuses > Influence of Guillen

QUOTE(bulokis @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 11:57 PM) Time to change things KW. Even if these hitters started hitting, its too freaking late!!! I am all for These Kids Can Play again. Call up Anderson, Sweeney and let them play. Fields will probably be around due to Crede's condition. Get some young blood in to replace these millionaires. I would, for once, like to see one of our "semi-power hitter projects" (Sweeney, Anderson, Fields and even Terrero) rip a fastball over the plate at 93-95 MPH. Is that asking for too much? At least now, from having had a couple of bad spells with my back, I can understand why Crede is struggling so much, but players in their early to mid 20's who are 100% healthy? -
QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 10:56 PM) Or Erstad Some of the money we could have spent on Porcello will probably be spent on another year of Erstad. It's pretty incredible to be outspent by the Detroit Tigers, of all teams, for our own player in Magglio Ordonez, as well as Porcello. Not to mention they have Verlander, Bonderman and Andr. Miller. If you were just to forecast the teams with the best future in our division, you have to figure the Tigers would be up there at #1, despite their aging everyday line-up (Magglio, Guillen, Sheffield, Polanco, Casey, Monroe, I-Rod...I think all of those guys are in their 30's or above).

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Apr 22, 2007 -> 06:38 PM) The White Sox could support about $95-100 mill. Garcia put them up to $110. It's simple math really. Aside from that, all GMs have their stinkers; it's still early to be deciding the final outcome, but at the time, it looked horrendous. Thought now might be an appropriate time to revisit this topic again, six weeks later. -
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 10:16 PM) It will be 8-4 then. Good prediction, except for the Fields homer part of it.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 09:41 PM) That would require the Sox trading someone at peak value. That's a foreign idea to KW. Yeah, I can imagine the season ticket holders reacting well to the trades of Konerko, Iguchi, Crede and Dye coming into this season.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 09:40 PM) I do think its time that when a guy who has mostly sucked his entire career comes up with a good season to maybe lower the expectations the following season. See Loaisa, Cotts, Politte, now Thornton. Loiaza at least had something of a successful track record in the earlier part of his career, and he always had good stuff...it was just that adding the cutter in 2003 made him an All-Star caliber pitcher.
-
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 08:55 PM) If we have an infield problem right now, what makes you think some prospects are going to change it for next year? How about we build up our farm with the best possible players, and use them as trading pieces to fill our holes? Pitching prospects tend to be worth more in the trading market, so I understand where the Sox are coming from. The question is, how does trading Haeger, Floyd, Phillips, McCullough or Broadway net us even a MLB quality starter in the OF, SS, 2B or catcher? We won't even be able to trade any of these picks for at least a year...if we wanted to, and we can't really go out and trade Gio, Russell, Masset and De Los Santos, so what's left to trade?
-
Can someone please explain to me why we're drafting all pitchers when we need about 4-5 positions on the field to be replaced? Is KW planning to trade all of his pitching prospects to fill needs? Well, that's one way to go about it...as pitchers are the most valuable components of any organization, just not sure I agree with that philosophy or not.

The Reason This Team is Bad, and Yes: It's Ozzie's Fault
caulfield12 replied to Gregory Pratt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(GreenSox @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 08:16 AM) Oh, yea, Ozzie's a big believer in plate patience and taking walks and waiting for a ball that you can hit. What a howler that is. And you call my post BS? The "evidence" you provide is walker saying he wants players that can hit up the middle. There's a big difference between not swinging for the fences and plate patience. On the other hand, this staff has: drooled over free-swinging Erstad and labelling Erstad a .400 quality hitter when he was hitting below .200. When he uses Alex Cintron as a pinch-hitter. When he loads the team up with free swingers. If they believed in patience wouldn't at least ONE of the slap hitters take walks. You'd think, but none do under this staff. Do you see hitters taking walks when Guillen and Walker coach them? Do you ever see Guillen criticiizing a player (which he loves to do in general) for swinging at everything. The Sox aren't alone. The Angels aren't an OBP team either and they've had success. The Sox won a WS with free swingers. You can do it if you get good hitting free swingers. Right now, we feature Rob M., two rookies, and Alex Cintron as pinch hitter (and a cold rest of the team). THAT is the problem. You could argue that Cintron and Mackowiak SHOULD be slap hitters based on their power totals, but they aren't accurately described as that...and Cintron doesn't have the speed to be a slap hitter. -
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 08:38 AM) He was the one who got the Sox behing 4 early. Look at Vazquez's White Sox career. He has had the lead in the vast majority of games he has pitched. Last season he had the lead in all but 3 or 4 starts and still sucked. He is what he is. Stop making excuses for his overpaid, overhyped ass. We could single out any of about 15-20 players for blame, KW, Ozzie, JR, the scouting department, Walker, Cooper..."the blame game," whatever you want to call it, the best thing thing KW could do is trade Vazquez and get the equivalent of another Chris Young back. Which basically means KW admitting he was wrong about Vazquez AND Anderson, which is going to be very difficult for him to do...in fact, I think one of the reasons he signed him long-term was to show that this trade was not just about 2006-07 but the long-term future of the White Sox as well.

Joe Crede to 15 day DL, Josh Fields called up from AAA.
caulfield12 replied to marsh's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 07:24 AM) *Sigh* This was worst case scenario, and of course it happened. If you ask me, I really think Kenny did try to deal Joe to NYY in a Buehrle/Garcia and Crede for Arod deal. I think he also talked to Anaheim about trading Joe over there for Figgins and a pitcher, because there was too much smoke there for it to be nothing as well. I think Anaheim backed out because of their apprehension over Crede's back after dealing with McPhearson's problems. The whole world knew about Joe's back, so I doubt anyone was busting down the door to take a chance on a guy who is getting really close to free agency, has Borass as an agent, has a bad back, and refused to have surgery. How many teams do you think would have actually paid up for that? With the Sirotka/Wells trade in not-too-distant memory, I think that most clubs would have disqualified the trade based on MRI's and potential problems with his back. There would certainly be a grievance if something like this happened with KW trading "damaged goods" twice in seven year span. Clubs that acquired him would have the same hesitation that KW was obviously having, and trading for a player you would only have for 1-2 seasons wouldn't make sense to many clubs. -
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 07:08 AM) That's a 6.00 ERA and it sucks. He threw so many pitches he had to be lifted. At $12.5 million its not crazy to expect more. Excepting this as not a bad game from him and looking at his strikeouts is something teams have been doing the last 4 seasons with him. The object of the game is to win. Its nice to see DJ question his concentration last night. Except he's only making $9.5 million, from the Sox. And there are 100 more pressing problems that can be pointed out, besides the results from a fourth starter whose overall stats would be much better than the average MLB 4th starter. It is what it is. We won this exact same type of game last year when our offense scored four runs for Javy early in the game. Expecting our starters to give up 0 or 1 runs per game is simply unrealistic. The harder they try to be too "fine," that's when you'll start seeing 3-5 runs given up per game by starters.

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines Note to KW, This season is OVAH, for all intents and purposes, without Joe Crede. That means that the short-sighted drafting of another college reliever (see Ring, Royce or even Fogg, Josh) would be idiotic. We need catchers, middle infielders and outfielders more than anything. There are a few that should be available when the Sox pick. I don't want to see KW's quote in the paper tomorrow, "We felt this was our best chance to compete this year. We don't believe in rebuilding here, we're reloading, and the price other clubs were asking for quality relief pitching was not commensurate with what I wanted to give up in return from our system. Usually we take the "best player available," but we feel Mr. Weathers is "big league ready" and can contribute to our bullpen immediately. In fact, I was speaking to Ozzie last week and he said, "Get me some right-handed relievers that can throw strikes." Well, Ozzie, here you go. And no, I don't see any commonality between this pick and Royce Ring, there's nothing wrong with taking a reliever in the 1st round even though we desperately need position prospects to replenish our lower minors."

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 04:18 AM) Hello Jim from DesPlaines welcome to the Whitesox post game show. "Chris, how do you stand the crap we see. Its June, where is the offense. How the hell is this team not hitting. Is Greg Walker looking for a new job yet. I am a season ticket holder and I am sick of this crap....and" Well Jim, you know what will make you happy. A triple threats gift card. "A triple threats sports card? Chris you didnt answer my question. When is this team going to hit? Why is Greg Wa...." Well it seems that Jim got disconnected. I know its a common thing for fans to try and find blame. I talked to Greg Walker, the best hitting coach in the history of baseball earlier about it. And he reassured me that when the weather heats up, so will this team. This has been a perfect storm of injuries, unseasonably cold weather, and a large amount of Johan Santana like pitching we have faced. No other team has faced the challenges we have. But good news, we are a 2nd half team. Thats right sox fans. When you think of the 2nd half, you can count on a strong sox team pulling away. I like our position, and I agree with Jon Garland as we will run away with the division. Its not possible for the offense to go on like this. If you flip their cards they are all allstars. I fully expect each member of the team to hit 900 for the rest of the year, and pitchers should be afraid very afraid to face a team like this. Its a lion, about to pounce and tear a team up. It just gives me chills thinking about how many runs this team is going to put up. It could happen tomorrow, it could happen next month. Just remember to be patient, and keep coming to he park and it will happen. Next caller The only time in recent memory we played well in the second half was 2003, and we tanked against the Twins and nearly everyone in September. The 01 team played "okay" down the stretch, but they started out at 14-29, fought to get back to .500 in June and July, then essentially stayed around within a few games of .500
