QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 05:41 PM) well, I can tell you after my first three years it seemed getting to the tourney was freaking impossible, so if anderson can consistently build a tourney team that's great for the school and fanbase. Alden as a person is a prick, but I have to respect the dude. Agree on all counts. I was a freshman during Quin's last year. The turnaround is impressive, but it did take Mike 3 years. QUOTE (Felix @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 05:49 PM) Does Mizzou still play 40 minutes of hell? I always love watching their games, although I can't say I catch as many as I'd like. Yes. It's faster at times than last year because they don't have the big guys like last year where they could pound inside and beat you in half court. They are much worse in the half-court, but better at pressing and going even faster. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 04:38 PM) Sounds like Ramsey was having a tough game just following on sportsline... Also, does Tiller or Taylor start? Ramsey just isn't good on offense. He's still solid on the boards and on defense. Problem is Bowers keeps getting into foul trouble and the depth isn't there in the frontcourt. Tiller and Taylor are the usual starters, but both have missed a couple games due to minor injuries, the flu or not paying speeding tickets. Michael Dixon got into foul trouble today, but he's looked great as a freshman this year. He's coming along nicely. This team is probably a first week exit at the tourney, but considering they lost 3 starters and the team's 2 best players from a year ago that's good improvement for Mizzou. Next year they should be really nasty with a top 20 recruiting class coming in. They should be able to replace Tiller and Taylor. Replacing Ramsey's d might be tougher though. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 03:36 PM) COOL win on bowers dunk, thanks for the link Danman!!!! I didn't know about it but I was never really effin with sports media at Mizzou. If I had money to buy anything I would buy a bunch of beer to celebrate. That was a great finish. Taylor's 3 was sick. Denmon stepped up. I knew K State wasn't really #10. According to Wiki the record for fouls in a 40 minute game is 60. This game had 56. Super ugly. Mizzou just needs to defend home court and scrape a few wins on the road. Texas and Kansas have to go to Columbia, but those teams are on a different level from Kansas State. -

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 02:08 PM) Tommy Tuberville to Texas Tech. Those e-mails involving the AD, chancellor and a booster are coming true. The booster's line (paraphrasing) 'I promise our chances of getting a better coach are better than him getting a better job.' Tech got a better coach. Where's Leach's better job? Funny how that worked out. -

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 02:04 PM) RockMNation is one of the best blogs on SBNation. Yes. I wrote an article on them for a Columbia magazine a year or so ago. They've gotten bigger and better since. It's a daily read for me. There's lots of stuff on there for non-Mizzou fans (like Beyond the Box Score predictions of every college football game). It's cool because most of the contributors are separated from most of the readers by one or 2 degress of separation. It's weird to read an online site and know some of the people in person for a reason other than the site. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2010 -> 11:51 AM) would be pleased if the mizzou fans let me know how they do vs. kstate today. Rockmnation.com. Crowd is rocking, pace is fast. K State shooting hot to start, but it's a close game. -
Retherford, Hudson, Santos, Harrell, Dolsi to take part in White Sox 'mini camp' Somewhat interesting idea here. The minor league players working with the Major League staff in the middle of the offseason. Notice that all 5 named are guys with some sort of a chance at making the big league roster. Doesn't hurt to get a head start on evaluating these guys.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 02:53 PM) It also doesnt mean that McCoy would have gone off like many people are saying. Especially seeing as how he didnt exactly have a great season against better defenses. I just think it's funny how so many people are so sure about what the outcome would have been and not just what it could have been had McCoy not gotten hurt. It's not about McCoy lighting it up, it's about McCoy doing better than the 4-20 start Gilbert had. 10-20 would be a bad start for McCoy and that would be a drastic improvement. That's why it's very easy to say McCoy makes them a lot better last night. He didn't need to light it up considering Texas had a late drive to take the lead with a 4-20 passing start from Gilbert. -

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 12:18 AM) I just feel as though the defense wasn't on its toes and didn't play as hard after McCoy came out. I also got the feeling that a lot of the players, and probably Saban, didn't feel as good about the win knowing McCoy didn't play. Here's my question: would everyone feel the same way had McCoy got hurt in practice before the game and didn't play at all? If McCoy was hurt beforehand giving even just a couple days of prep for Gilbert I would have a slightly different feeling. The emotions of losing your star QB can devastate a team (see 24-0 2nd quarter) and the freshman that came in started 4-20 before settling in. I also highly doubt the Bama players felt too bad about it (see celebration penalty on pick 6 and Ingram constantly showing his gloves off). They felt fine about it. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jan 8, 2010 -> 12:59 AM) Are you kidding me? If the punter makes a good throw, thats a first down and plus some. It was a good aggressive call on the most important game of most of those players lives. It was open, Texas wasnt ready... the punter just p**** armed the throw. That's the problem. It was a punter trying to make a 20+ yard throw. It's an inexcusable call, no matter where it came from. -

QUOTE (T R U @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 11:31 PM) Really? They rushed for like 230 yards on a very good Texas defense.. they didn't need to do anything on offense except give the ball to their two exceptional RBs due to the Texas offense not being able to do anything without Jesus McCoy.. If McCoy is in the game, the ENTIRE game is different for obvious reasons.. but due to the circumstances, Alabama really didn't need to do anything but be extremely boring on offense.. Anyways, I get what you are saying.. but still Texas defense has nothing to do with Colt McCoy, and Bama gashed them all night on the ground. That was impressive. McElroy and the passing game? You're right, fail. Like I said though, they didn't need it.. Right. The playcalling changes for Bama given a different start and that probably helps them, but at the same time the more they had to pass the worse. My point is that Texas was a couple dumb plays and a couple breaks away from winning despite being without McCoy. At least the dumb plays (ie the pick 6) and the 4-20 start at QB would be improved. -

QUOTE (T R U @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 11:17 PM) Bama is prolly the best defense in the nation all things considered, I don't think you can assume McCoy would light it up against them had he played the whole game.. Texas also has a very good defense and Bama ran all over them, easily, its not really a surprise that their passing game looks terrible tonight they didnt need it at all.. Sure, the game goes different with Colt in there.. but Colt doesn't play defense and Bama ran the ball anyway they wanted to. I dont think the result is any different with Colt in there, I still think Bama would have won.. Bama scored 17 points on offense on full drives. A pick 6, a drive started at the 3 (that still took 3 tries to get in) and a meaningless last minute TD that was also on a short field. It's easy to argue Bama would still win, but to be impressed with their offensive performance? No. -

What happens if Colt doesn't get hurt? Bama’s offense really struggled. The 2nd half Gilbert played well so that may not have been too different, but the 2nd quarter lull (and that’s an understatement) from Texas wouldn’t have gone down the same. I picked Texas beforehand, but this game actually makes me MORE sure a healthy Texas team beats Bama. -

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 10:08 PM) Shipley TD and now an onside kick...uh oh. Texas has finally settled down. If only Williams didn't drop that TD in the first half and that really weird shovel pass didn't go for a pick 6. -

This is a ridiculous start. Bama's absolutely idiotic fake punt on 4th and 23 in their own end? McCoy being out. That absurd short kick onside recovery. Wow. -
QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 12:28 PM) Well, i hate to say it, but since JD split, the last 3 episodes were pretty good and watchable. Cole still sucks but with more Drew and Denise it makes up for things. Yes. Not top tier stuff (though the first episode JD was gone, was great), but some very good lines and bits. I'm certainly not going to stop watching, but Lucy needs major improvement.

It's funny that Bell says the Sox will be slower with Mitchell than they would most No. 1s, yet they started him at Kanny. Not a very conservative start. Would they think about having him play there again?

QUOTE (zenryan @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 10:55 PM) TCU should be thankful they didnt get matched up with Florida. Both should be. TCU has a great defense, but Dalton was just terrible tonight. The thing that separates TCU and Boise from other 'high scoring' teams is that they have real defenses. Heck, TCU was known as a defensive team before they ran through the MWC. -
Comparing Prospect Rankings Today, Baseball America released their top ten prospect rankings for the White Sox. This means all of the major prospect publications have released their White Sox rankings. Let’s take a look at the differences from each and try to figure out what it all means. More...

BA gave Danks 'best outfield arm' in the system. Last year he was given best defensive outfielder, but they gave that to Mitchell this year. I'm pretty surprised by the Mitchell statement since he wasn't even playing centerfield at LSU, but still some respect for Jordan's D.

QUOTE (gfbaseball @ Dec 31, 2009 -> 09:54 PM) I heard Thompson was going back to Great Falls next year to be the starting center fielder. Guess we'll know in about six months. It would seem very likely. In BA chat today Phil Rogers said he thinks Thompson will go to extended spring training and then rookie ball. He's very young so that's still expected.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 12:31 PM) The lack of velocity is a big concern however, off the top of my head I can't think of too many pitcher who broke into the Majors with a sub-90 mph fastball. Yeah, that's currently what is keeping me (and probably others) from having Holmberg up higher, but a lot of publications have him in the top 10. Still, that's probably more a function of our system not being deep than Holmberg being a great prospect. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 12:33 PM) Viciedo continues to be underrated. I understand ranking Mitchell so high off upside and specifically walks + power from a premium position, but which numbers are more impressive, a line of .280/.317/.391/.708 from a 20-year-old in AA, or a line of .296/.417/.435/.852 from a 20-year-old in A-? I'm sure Viciedo could have torn up Kannapolis too. And again, because of upside I have no problem with Mitchell being #1 because he does have the higher ceiling, but if ceiling is the most important part, then why in the hell is Brent Morel ranked ahead of Viciedo AGAIN??? Hell, why is Morel even ahead of Miguel Gonzalez who put up an .888 OPS as an 18-year-old C in Bristol? And, most importantly, why the f*** is Morel just one notch below Dan Hudson? We need to trade this guy. Morel is a nice prospect, but he put up a .281/.335/.453/.788 line as a 22-year-old in Winston-Salem, which is very good but certainly not great, plus he's not exactly a toolbox, and on top of that, he plays a power position where the offensive standards in the Major Leagues basically start with his W-S production. I get that because of his defense he is one of the safer bets we have to make the majors, but if you're making a top-10 list of "safe bets" then Jared Mitchell isn't even on there and Hudson is #1. If ceiling is the main issue I have no idea how Morel outranks all these other guys, and if it's production + ceiling + age for level then I still have no idea how Morel outranks these other guys. This is a rarity, but I agree with everything you said. BA's rankings surprised me a bit, but I guess that shouldn't surprise me. Morel is getting way too much love across the board, but solid defense at 3rd is probably making scouts love him. Also, I really liked that 2013 projected roster for once. It assumes no trades as they all do, but there's a lot of prospects I like there. Flowers needs to pan out, one of Morel/Viciedo needs to pan out and at least one of Mitchell/Danks needs to pan out. It's not earth shattering, but it's the best BA projection that has me excited about the future. -

Crawford has more athleticism than NU has had in a player in a while. He's been a pleasant surprise, though a lot of people thought he was going to be a solid player with good upside. I'm impressed with how quickly he has made an impact. He isn't great, but for a freshman he has been better than expected and should continue to develop. He's already gotten notably better since the start of the year. -

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 09:08 PM) I'm so embarrassed at this damn good ol boy administration at Texas Tech right now. Leach didn't fit in with this crowd, and never had a chance. Just absurd. I understand why you didn't want him fired, but it's hard to blame Tech for firing him. This is pretty inexcusable. -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 10:16 PM) NU is better than I expected and Illinois just didn't play defense in the first half, bad combination. I think a lot of people who haven't seen them play will think that. I missed most of tonight's game, but they play half court basketball extremely well and their athleticism isn't as far behind as it has been.
