Shirek is a draft eligible soph. He won't sign.

Sox just took Logan Johnson, 2B from Louisville. He crowds the plate like none other, got hit his first 3 plate appearances in the regional opener against Miami. The crowd had some fun with him as his back foot was definitely over the line, it was pretty funny actually. He didn't seem that great though.

QUOTE(Jimbo @ Jun 8, 2007 -> 12:56 PM) the white sox drafted like 5 black players, have they ever in their life drafted a black player outside of malone. Chris Carter, Gartrell (in Kanny now, went to USF with Poreda), to name a couple off the top of my head. To continue the hopefully still innocent racism: I was more surprised to see a black pitcher (Griffith). To answer the above questions about the draft...the guys taken in this range are either extremely easy signs (college guys) or talented guys that are expected to go to college. For example, Chris Carpenter of Kent St. was a top 2 round talent, but just got taken by the Yankees in the 18th round. This is because he was a draft eligible sophomore, he will almost undoubtedly go back to school. Buehrle was a signability pick that became a draft and follow. He wouldn't have been picked so late otherwise. Oh Lasorda doing the conference call for the Dodgers, good times. Also, Alex D'Alessio, stud 1B for Clemson, just hit a HR about 10 minutes before getting drafted by the Giants in the 19th round. That HR got him drafted haha.

Quickman- are you referring to the guy on mlb.com (think it was Mayo) saying that if Poreda developed secondary stuff he could be as good as the guys at the top of the draft?
-
He had a 2.88 ERA his junior year. 60 Ks and only 38 hits in 56.1 IP, but 37 walks. If you can teach control...

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 07:10 PM) Danny, If you see this, what's the site again with the Mizzou baseball recruit info? simmonsfield.com QUOTE(R.J. @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 07:28 PM) How about Middlebrooks or Carpenter this round After seeing Carpenter in person he definitely is a projectable arm. If the Sox can teach him some control, wow. He has major movement on his pitches. Also, Dunigan of Oklahoma went to Seattle and that guy is a f'n beast. In a game at Mizzou I saw him play he got gunned out on a close play at first and after being called out yelled to the ump, "Just because I'm big doesn't mean I'm not fast!" He's not kidding either. Unreal, athlete with insane power. He jacked the hell out of a ball in one game.

As people have mentioned Russell is gone. Russell and Tyler Mach of Ok St. absolutely mashed the Big 12 this year. Russell in the 4th round is major value if he signs. He is a draft eligible soph, but could sign. The concern is that he is a Joe Borchard type. As for Mach, he played 3rd in college but they have him listed as a 2B on mlb.com. I really like Mach, another solid hitter in the 4th round.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 06:36 PM) Thank you, FutureSox. I wrote the Poreda summary and Heads is forced to actually do stuff now. We'll have more info later, don't you worry. I think our draft coverage is our best feature, maybe that's just me. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 06:39 PM) It may just be me, but BasseballChannels host sounds like Zach Braff. Casey Stern? He was on Dream Job. I think his voice is higher pitched than Braff. Also, I just realized a bit ago that Arrieta out of TCU, that a lot of pubs had in the first round. Josh- MacFarland is a Mizzou signee, that's higher than he was supposed to go. Hopefully he stays, man this is probably the best recruiting class in school history.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 05:59 PM) If I didn't text you, than who did I text? Speaking of which, you never responded to my PM about Prospect of the Month. And if Griffith goes to FIU over pro ball the Sox should be embarrassed. FIU sucks.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 05:12 PM) Ahh, gotcha. Which only makes more sense as to why the only supplemental pick I saw them mention was Hagadone to the Red Sox. They did that with the Mets too because neither team had a first round pick. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 05:30 PM) Do Atlanta scouts even leave the state of Georgia to do their work? The real question is do they even have to?
-
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 05:08 PM) So ESPN couldn't even cover the whole 1st round, eh? But they sure as hell extended it. That was the whole first round. The supplemental round is its own round.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 05:05 PM) You know what, if Porcello was off the board or announced that he was going to go to college, I wouldn't be so opposed to the pick. But passing on Porcello makes me hate Poreda. That makes sense.
-
Corey Brown, who was projected to go to the Sox in the first round of a mock that flash posted (an absurd projection), went 59 to Oakland. Typical college pick for Oakland, I like him in that 2nd round range.
-
For the record, as asked above, Kip Wells was the 1st rounder in 1998 with Rowand going 35th overall.

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 04:21 PM) But I'm not going to get excited when I see a guy of Porcellos/Hochevars caliber because I know the White Sox won't take them. You shouldn't have this year. There was zero chance they took Porcello, absolutely zero. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 04:21 PM) Seriously, does this guy not seem like Andrew Sisco part 2? Hard fastball but with no secondary stuff and some command issues. Poreda doesn't have command issues.
-
QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 03:52 PM) The line "... but was awkward and had suspect arm action." seems to suggest potential for future mechanical problems. Keyword was. It sounds like he fixed his delivery, thus the improved velocity. Also, Borbon just went off the board at 35 to Texas.
-
QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 03:30 PM) Fabulous! Another guy with arm trouble. Maybe we can sign Wood and Prior this off season to go with him. Where on earth did you read that he has arm trouble? QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 03:30 PM) his numbers are not what you would expect for a first rounder in a pretty s***ty baseball conference. 93 hits in 100 innings and only 66 k's. WTF?? He will be nothing more than another reliever. To be fair the WCC isn't that bad of a conference. It's not the ACC, SEC, or Big 12, but it's far from a s***ty conference. The top half of the conference (San Diego, Pepperdine, USF, Gonzaga) are solid baseball programs.

Aaron Poreda USF profile Junior season stats: 99.2 IP, 40 R (32 ER), 2.89 ERA, 66 K, 18 BB, 93 hits, 7 HR, .252 opp avg, 7-6 record Ranked 37 by Baseball America

66 Ks in 99.2 IP...oh, it all makes sense now.
-
Touches 96-97 with good control and is a big lefty? How did this guy not get more pub?

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 03:23 PM) If we pass on Porcello someone dies. Hope you got your killing shoes on.
-
QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 03:07 PM) We'll probably take Wes Roemer. KW will like his grinder attitude. That would be McCulloch II. Roemer is probably better, but a college winner who had a stud sophomore year and has disappointed in his junior season. I would love Roemer with our 2nd rounder though.
-
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 02:48 PM) I guarantee the Sox won't take him. Seriously. The people rooting for Porcello to the Sox enjoy pain and suffering because it's not going to happen. I'm telling you guys: Nick Schmidt.
