  1. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 6, 2007 -> 03:19 PM) Anywho, not a big deal here with Durant, but I must say that it's pretty ridiculous that he can't bench 185. The guy is talented as all hell but he's really going to be a jump shooter for a while in the nba, me thinks. Yeah, 185?! That is sad. Still though, he will go #2 unless he shows attitude problems. This should eliminate the KG comparisons. An nbadraft.net article that I believe was posted here during the college season said the likely floor for Durant is Rashard Lewis and that is sounding a lot more realistic now. I'm not saying he will be Rashard Lewis, but a better version probably.
  2. QUOTE(29thandPoplar @ Jun 6, 2007 -> 12:24 PM) I'm guessing "no" on Laporta, he is advised by Boras. He's also a college senior. His leverage is minimal and with the new signing rules he would have to sign before August 15 or somewhere around there. I wouldn't be worried about him this time around.
  3. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 5, 2007 -> 10:59 PM) Also what a game for Collaro. I still don't think he's anything of a prospect, but at least he got to have fun singlehandedly beating the AA version of the Cubs in extras. Yeah, he leads the Southern League in total bases by a decent amount but his OPS is still only .850. Not that .850 is bad, but usually when you lead the league in total bases it's quite a bit higher. What's interesting is that he is hitting .316 with a .341 on base at home as opposed to .260 and .283 on the road. Of course he is still slugging at a greater rate on the road, but he is still having a productive season. He's Joe Borchard without the walks, ugh.
  4. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 5, 2007 -> 11:07 PM) I also like LaPorta, too, if the Sox are going to take a position prospect. Kid -- and as I say "kid", I realize he's older than me, hehe -- can flat out hit... Yeah, I haven't followed the prep guys this year, but none of the college guys likely to be around at 25 thrill me. If Schmidt of Arkansas fell to us as has been suggested I'd be for taking him, but I'm rooting for a LaPorta pick. That would be ideal in my mind. High impact polished bat. He has question marks, but he can rake.

  6. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jun 5, 2007 -> 11:15 AM) Good stuff as always, guys. The only thing I'd change is I'd have Gio ranked higher than Fields but that's obviously just a matter of opinion. We still are being conservative with Gio because of his question marks physically. I know I am one of the more conservative people regarding Gio. Also, Fields is a power hitting 3B that has improved his defense to a respectable level and 3B is a tough spot to find good bats at like Fields projects to. Another thing that helped Fields get the nod is Major League readiness. He would be up for about half the teams in the bigs right now. If we made the list now it would be hard to keep Fields ahead of Gio because when we made the list Gio had a mediocre year in Reading, his current Bham numbers would make it hard to keep him below Fields. With that said, both players are repeating their levels. We're gonna have a prospect of the month thing coming out soon (it actually will be out because Jason isn't writing it) and Fields has a case for winning with his huge May.
  7. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 11:37 PM) Was hoping Vandy would win so I could see Price and Alvarez. I kinda think Vandy screwed up pitching Price friday. They barely won their opener, it went to extras I believe (either extras or they won it in the bottom of the 9th). If Price doesn't go Friday, they lose Friday. He pitched well but Austin Peay's ace was dominant. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 5, 2007 -> 12:10 AM) Sorry about Mizzu Dan. I was hoping we'd somehow meet up in the College World Series. Yeah, it was frustrating because they won the first two and all they had to do was take 1 of 2 from Louisville to move on again. They had opportunities to win it last night, but no one could pitch today which was sad. I've never seen the pitching staff collectively suck ass all at once. Next year they should be better with essentially their entire pitching staff and most of their lineup coming back, but they would have hosted supers if they won which would have been amazing.
  8. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 4, 2007 -> 10:19 PM) Isn't Schnurstein about 40 years old now? 22, turns 23 in July. If he can put up good numbers in AA when he gets promoted this season he would regain a minimal prospect status.

  11. QUOTE(chimpy2121 @ Jun 3, 2007 -> 10:39 AM) Black Saturday for College Baseball: No. 1 Seed Vanderbilt loses to Michigan 4-3 No. 4 Seed Texas loses to UC Irvine 3-1 No. 6 Seed FSU loses to Miss. St. 3-0 No. 7 Seed Arkansas loses to Oklahoma State 14-3 No. 8 Seed San Diego is Eliminated by Minnesota 6-5 Black Saturday? Haha, you're only saying that because FSU lost. Miss. St. is a very good team, I'm not too surprised, but it also wouldn't surprise me much if FSU was able to bounce back. Also of note is that two Big Ten teams picked up big wins that you listed and Ohio State won their elimination game as well. The conference is 4-2 to start and that is a great record for a so called mid-major in baseball. College baseball really needs the Big Ten and Big East to improve a bit for the sport to become more popular nationally.

  13. Didn't the Sox draft Brett Scarpetta once or twice recently?
  14. If we were to make a list that completely included prospects based on this season's results a few guys would shoot up or down. We only moved guys up or down a spot or two in the case of close calls because we released them at such different times.
  15. Yeah, great for UIC. Wichita State was another number 1 to fall, losing to New Orleans by giving up 3 runs in the 9th. Mizzou won 10-2 with a record crowd, good times.
  16. QUOTE(SoxAce @ Jun 2, 2007 -> 12:34 AM) Carter is a walking machine still. 1-3 1 R 2 BB 2 SO He has walked 21 times in 113 at-bats in May after only 7 walks in 91 at-bats in April and has 14 walks in his last 10 games (33 at-bats). That is an indication in its own right that he should be moved up soon, pitchers don't want to pitch to him anymore.
  17. QUOTE(BearSox @ May 31, 2007 -> 09:03 PM) Also, an intriguing guy later on would be Chris Carpenter from Kent. He is likely to fall due to injury problems, but he has good fastball and a really good slider. He right now is a starter, but to keep him healthy, he might be better of going into the bullpen. I saw Carpenter tonight against Mizzou and his final line doesn't tell the story (5 IP, 6 R, 5 K, 4 BB, 6 hits). He dominated the first time through the order and has good movement on his pitches. The second time around the lack of control he has demonstrated this season showed through as he started to get behind in counts and walked a couple in the 6th where he got rocked. There were a lot of scouts with guns checking him out and I missed out on his velocity, but it looked fast lol. He really makes you understand the term 'projectable arm'. He has great stuff, but needs a lot of work in his game. If a Major League club thinks they can fix his control, they really got something, and it's possible he might project as a reliever but I was definitely impressed with his stuff. His slider definitely was a very good pitch. I wouldn't mind the Sox taking a shot at him somewhere in the 3rd-5th round range, 2nd might be a bit of a reach unless he throws 96-97 with regularity which I doubt.
  18. QUOTE(thomsonmi @ May 30, 2007 -> 10:37 PM) Zack Pitts, Junior rhp at Louisville Zack had a 1.78 ERA this year. Batters hit only .204 against him. He was the Big East Pitcher of the Year. According to Baseball America... He commands his 88-92 mph fastball to both sides and does a good job keeping the ball down. Pitts flashes a good slider at times, though he doesn't repeat his delivery when throwing the pitch, and his changeup has been solid. "Zack can pitch -- there are some similarities between him and Phelpsy," Clinkscales said. "They're both right-handed pitchers, they both pitch with fastballs aggressively, they can locate, both can get breaking balls and changeups over, and they're both efficient. I think it will be a good matchup." Pitts got destroyed today by Miami. His fastball looked very mediocre, but his problem was control. I can definitely see how he didn't repeat his delivery very well, but I have to imagine his struggles were more due to nerves. Louisville hasn't been to regionals in a long time (I want to say 13 years) so this game was HUGE for that program, though they did rally for a 13-7 win. His final line was 1.2 IP, 7 R, 0 K, 1 BB, 8 hits. Only the one walk, but he also hit 2 batters and was behind seemingly every count. That scouting report says nothing of a curveball, which looked like his best pitch, though it could have been a slider. Whatever it was, it was a damn good breaking ball...when he got it over. Either his changeup sucked or he didn't throw it. I wasn't impressed, but he showed flashes of decent stuff. I wouldn't write him off, but he's not an early round pick.
  19. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 11:23 AM) They'll pick the highest ceiling, safe pitcher imaginable. A potential #4 starter. Nick Schmidt sounds about right. I've been thinking Schmidt too.

  21. QUOTE(BearSox @ May 31, 2007 -> 08:08 PM) I personally wouldn't mind Josh Fields. I don't know if that is because I want three Josh Fields or maybe because this team needs future bullpen help. Fields had a poor year, he struggled with control. I'd be surprised if he was taken in the first 5 rounds. He might want to go the same route LaPorta did and stay for his senior year to raise his draft stock back close to where it was.
  22. Nice job Frank. I might as well root for you, this White Sox team doesn't deserve any sort of positive attention.
  23. QUOTE(BearSox @ May 31, 2007 -> 06:14 PM) Wasn't he considered to be like a late first round pick in that draft to? Padres aren't like the Braves... I'm not sure about late first round pick, more like back end of the top 10 IIRC. However, he was never in the #1 talks until about a day before the draft. I still can't believe how quickly he busted. He never showed any signs of being a good hitter.
  24. It seems doubtful Aumont will fall to the Sox. MLB.com's last projection had him going 9 to Arizona and BA has him 19 in their current prospect rankings (13 last week). If he continues to fall, which is doubtful, he would be a steal. Then again, there always seems to be one or two guys that slip insanely far for seemingly no reason.
  25. Gio Interview from BA Rather timely considering the discussion.
