QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 04:49 PM) If assists are the only numbers you use in your argument of good point guard, then your scouting of points guards is pretty awful. And you've provided what again?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 03:46 PM) Yikes, maybe. There were some great PG's back there, but they are obviously more physically gifted nowadays. I would still take Isiah Thomas and Magic over pretty much anyone these days other than D Rose. i can't believe I forgot about Zeke. Damn. Good call.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 03:43 PM) The PGs of today would kill that bunch. Same with the 3/4's Solid argument. KJ was extremely athletic with a fantastic midrange game. He was also lightening quick. He couldn't be as successful as an athletic freak like Steve Nash, who was one of the better PGs in the league just last year. He's no Greivis Vasquez (who's averaging 14 pts and 9 ast). Yeah, today's PGs are just FREAKS!111!

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 03:30 PM) The center position is dead, and the easiest to take apart. Do the same comparison at PG now. Magic Johnson? Prime Kevin Johnson and Tim Hardaway would pretty easily be in the top 3 PGs in today's era also. Kevin Johnson would be an absolute monster in this era. A prime Mark Price would be good in this era too. And the center position is dead because there are no more good ones coming out. Dwight was considered a center and when he was good he was considered a top 3 player in the league (probably even top 2) because of how dominant he was. Now put someone with Dwight's defensive skills and a plethora of offensive skills on top of that (Olajuwan). How valuable would he be?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 03:00 PM) I said that players progress. One generation is better than the one before it. And I disagree with this. Look at how guys like Garnett and Duncan are doing in today's NBA. They are considered two of the best Centers. Hell, a 36 year old Duncan has a higher PER right now than he did at the age of 24. His PER 36 minutes are pretty much in line with his career stats (Garnetts aren't too far off either). Now look at how guys like Hakeem and David Robinson aged (when the league was stronger). A very clear dip in production. Those are just a couple of examples.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 11:49 AM) Seaking of MJ - I love me some MJ. LeBron may not get to 6 rings (who knows, who cares), but right now he's flat out a better baller than MJ ever was. Hell, I'm even leaning that way with Kevin Durant - he's a freak of nature. These guys are bigger, stronger, and better than MJ. MJ would still get his against them if we're talking prime, but if I were starting a franchise today, I'd take prime LBJ or Durant over prime MJ. There, I said it. Flame on. Umm, you do realize that MJ, at the age of 38, held his own against guys that were still considered decent defenders recently, right? Look at what Jason Kidd and Shawn Marion were able to do against the Heat two years ago. They were much younger and much more athletic when they played against an old Jordan and Jordan still did fine against them. . It's not like the guy played 40 years ago. The game has gotten worse since the 90s. There are no dominant centers (Dwight Howard, lolz). It's so bad that they even had to eliminate the Center position from the All Star ballot. The wings look better today because the game is catered toward their skills. There are specialists galore and a midrange game that's almost nonexistent now. Carlos Boozer was able to succeed in this era. How good would someone like Charles Barkley be? How insane would David Robinson, Hakeem, young Shaq, and hell, even Mourning be in this era?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 12:58 PM) Even as a massive MJ fan, and someone who really doesn't like LeBron, the ONLY place that MJ is better, is his killer mentality. LeBron is bigger, stronger, faster, a better shooter, and a better defender. Massive MJ fan? Weren't you the one who said Wade is better than Jordan at everything except defense and dunking or something along those lines? Maybe it wasn't you, but I remember a massive discussion starting because of a ridiculous comment like that. There's also no way that he's faster, a better shooter (this one isn't even close. like seriously?!) and a better defender.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 22, 2013 -> 01:21 PM) That's not why he said Trestman would be a bad head coach though. He doesn't think Trestman can command a room. Although it's obvious he is pissed about losing that number 1 spot back then. Which is weird cause he still put up pretty big numbers in 2001 and 2002. That was the example he gave though. It obviously has some part to play in his thinking that Trestman wouldn't be a good head coach. Probably a lack of loyalty to long term players or something. He just seems bitter in the article.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 22, 2013 -> 01:14 PM) I don't think Tim Brown ever mentioned Jerry Rice. He said he thought Trestman was a great football mind, but didn't think he could lead a team. "Brown had posted nine straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons with the Raiders entering 2002, the year Trestman took over as the team’s offensive coordinator. In that 2002 season, Jerry Rice emerged as the team’s leading receiver and Brown finished with 930 yards. “The year he took over as offensive coordinator is also the year my reign with the Raiders ended because he made Jerry the No. 1 receiver instead of myself,” Brown said. “The year before I made the Pro Bowl and caught [91 passes for 1,165 yards] … and the year afterwards, the year he takes over I think I came like 50 yards from catching 1,000 yards in 10 or 11 straight seasons. “Hey, look, I’m not a selfish player, but come on, if I put the work in, make this happen for me. We had some interesting words about that part of it.” http://blog.sfgate.com/raiders/2013/01/16/...hired-trestman/

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 22, 2013 -> 12:14 PM) Tim Brown said, that the Raiders HC didn't want to win the Super Bowl against the Bucs. That he changed the entire game plan the day before the Super Bowl Tim Brown has been talking a bit too much lately. Why would he bring that up a decade later? I recently read an article where he criticized the Trestman hiring and cited Trestman making Jerry Rice the number one WR in oakland over him as the reason he isn't a good hire. I kid you not.

Griffey has missed 13 straight 3s. Can anyone tell me if he would play significant minutes for another B1G team right now? Would DJ Richardson get 30+ minutes per game for other teams as he goes into his annual B1G shooting slump with the inability to do anything else? The team that Groce inherited just isn't good. It was bad in the Bruce weber motion and its bad in the high ball screen offense. No ball handlers and the screeners suck at setting screens (which reminds me of Webers recent teams). They also have no good passers. I was foolish in thinking that Groce could turn around the program quickly. It's going to be a process. There are just tons of limited players on the roster.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 12:02 PM) Wootton and Paea are awful fits for the 5T. Peppers is the Bears best defensive player. They may save money, but how do they replace that production? I was going to post the same thing pretty much. Bad 5 techniques and no nose tackle. Yeah, that would be a great 3-4 team.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 08:45 PM) I just dont know what Bo Ryan sees in Ryan Evans. He takes selfish shots, he holds onto the ball to much. The rest of the team is unselfish and passes, he just can be a black hole. Itd be one thing if he was a decoy because Crean seems to have Olidapo on him, but its another to see if Evans can go iso on him. Seriously. I feel like he should be playing for Illinois with all these bad shots he's taking.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 12, 2013 -> 02:21 PM) I don't care what the roster is, shooting 25% in half for the 3rd time in four games is just inexcusable. Even they are better than that, but they have no concept of shot selection. The problem is that they're not a very good passing team so good looks don't come all that often. Almost every shot looks like a bad shot.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jan 12, 2013 -> 02:17 PM) Groce is showing major chinks in the armour with every Big Ten game he coaches! The roster is horribly flawed. The fact that he even has the Illini ranked at this point is extremely impressive. Although I do think the defense has been extremely underwhelming and should be better with the athletes that the Illini have.
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 12, 2013 -> 02:02 PM) The questions be coming for John Groce. The question should be "Why do you have one post player, 2 million wing players, and no true point guard?" The 2009 class looks pretty bad now. Paul, Richardson, Bertrand, and Griffey. 4 players and not one true ball handler or post player in the bunch. The 2011 class was similar, except that egwu has the potential to be a good post player. The lack of inside presence and ball handling are killing the Illini in big ten play.

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Jan 11, 2013 -> 07:30 PM) From what I read on PFF...jake I encourage you to chime in here as I only saw first half stats...he's not that good against the run, he just really has a knack for getting to the QB which he would be able to do at DE as well. It's obviously a plus to have the kinda pressure he gets up the middle but I wouldn't be opposed to putting him on the outside and throwing another run stuffer in the middle with Paea. Melton was -1.5 against the run. Still had the 8th highest overall score though at dt. Paea was -4.1 against the run. No bueno.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 11, 2013 -> 11:58 AM) That would have to be one of the best combos that could exist. Just like Martz and Lovie? Turner loves throwing the ball downfield too and the Eagles offensive line is just as bad as the Bears is. If they had the right personnel, then yes, it would be a perfect fit, but I feel like it could be Lovie and Martz part two.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 10:17 PM) Beat indiana. please. How that game is called is going to determine that one. I don't think it's going to go in Minny's favor. Unfortunately.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 9, 2013 -> 10:04 PM) Yep, get griffey out of the rotation He's just not a B1G player. I hope Groce realizes that and gives Henry and Langford all his minutes, especially to get them more experience for next year. I feel like Groce likes his offense though so he won't do it.
-
Illinois as a team this year was shooting 36.5% from 3. Today they're shooting 15% on 20 attempts. Minnesota as a team was shooting 33.2% from 3 this year. Today they're shooting 58.3%. Combine that with Abrams being in foul trouble for the majority of the game and you get a blowout. Welp, at least I won 50 on Minny -2. I figured the Illini would lose, but I thought it would be due to the offensive glass (a battle which the illini are winning right now),not 3 point shooting.
-
The illini can't hit an open three to save their lives.
-
Refs effectively taking Egwu out of the game. Impressive.
-
Illini shooting terribly from 3 (3-15 so far) and Abrams missed most of the half, but the lead is only 4. Could be much worse.
-
Paul headed to the locker room and Abrams just picked up his second foul. This could get ugly. Nevermind. Paul came back pretty quickly.
