  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 19, 2014 -> 04:52 PM) Billy Joel puts a on a great show for any who have not seen him before. Caught him and Elton at Wrigley a few years ago. Not even my type of music but what an awesome show
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 08:46 PM) Mark Appel over Kris Bryant is looking worse and worse by the day. Bryant on pace for 57 homers over a 162 game season. Hopefully that's two straight drafts that mistakes by the Astros help out Chicago
  3. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 19, 2014 -> 06:43 AM) I'm trying to understand why I and many others view these two types of events so differently. 1. A missal is shot at an airplane and innocent people are killed. 2. A missal is shot at a military target in a city and "collateral damage" occurs. In other words innocent people are killed. It seems fair to me to assume that whomever shot at that plane thought they were shooting at a military target making the Malaysian flight "collateral damage". I'm not saying we shouldn't be outraged, sad, and all the emotions we are feeling over this tragedy, but perhaps we should have a bit more outrage at "collateral damage"? How often did we shoot missals in Iraq and other countries knowing their would be "collateral damage"? I saw a map of the routes that different airlines were taking through that region. Some continued to fly over that airspace other avoided it. What possible reasons could you have to fly over the Ukraine? I'm guessing the answer will concern fuel costs. Because "collateral damage" is OK when it's an American missile? (green, maybe?) People look at collateral damage differently when it occurs to the people whose country is involved in the war. Had this been a local Ukranian passenger jet, people might not be AS outraged. This is more like if an American drone tried to bomb a terrorist location in Iraq, but instead leveled a random city in Saudi Arabia. (That may not be feasible, but you get the point) I'm not saying it's right to look at it that way, but I think that's how people have grown accustomed to looking at war. 49 Ukranian soldiers died when their military transport plane was downed by separatist's missile, but there was much less outrage because they are "part of the war", not that they chose to be.
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 02:26 PM) Basketball is a sport that depends far more upon athleticism. Football is similar for the "skill" positions, but there is more technique involved in those to some extent. Baseball, on the other hand, involves less athleticism and much more mechanics and hand eye coordination and practice. Those great athletes with well-refined skills will still be the best players, but I can't name you another sport in which Billy Butler would be even remotely considered a good player. Golf?
  5. Impressed that no one took the Machado/Bundy bait!
  6. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 05:34 PM) Fox news reporting that his high school, Prime Prep, is actually being shut down by the state. Prime Prep just sounds like an elite institution
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 01:06 PM) It is crazy to see a $200 million contract talked about for Jose Abreu. I wouldn't give him a Prince-esque $200+ million contract, but couldn't be happier about his current deal!
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 10:49 AM) Well, whatever Oklahoma does, they certainly deserve the "winning at all costs" award. It's funny how if you keep a trouble maker you are a bad, dirty program, but if you sign another school's criminal, you are nice to give him a second chance.
  9. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 10:40 AM) Maybe getting out of Chicago was necessary for the rest of the country to really see how good Mark is. It seems like he just started getting recognized towards the end of his tenure here & he seems to be getting a lot more love now in Toronto & playing against the AL East. Mark could easily be one of those "grow on you" guys that take a few tries but eventually will get in. It might take him 5-6 ballots but if he pitches long enough he will have a chance. He's definitely not a guy who will magically disappear from the ballot in a year or two. I think it has more to do with having arguably the best season of his career at age 35. Nobody cares about what happens in Toronto either.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 10:08 AM) 2008? Did he pitch at all in the 2000 post-season? Can't remember. For some reason, Bradford comes to mind more than Mark. One inning of relief in 2000 and one bad start in 2008.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) Again, I love Mark, but no Cy Youngs, not a lot of ASG appearances, one ring, there just isn't a lot of the counting stats that voters go off of. HOF voters loves playoff success and awesome as 2005 was, other than that he was one inning of relief and one bad start to show for on his playoff resume, that's it.
  12. QUOTE (shysocks @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 08:56 AM) That's right. Damaso Marte has a World Series win, but Mark doesn't. Baseball isn't fair. Buehrle's game against the Angels - the first of the four complete games - was perhaps the best of any pitching performance that postseason. 9 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, 4 K's, and 99 pitches thrown. One stupid Robb Quinlan homer kept him from qualifying for a Maddux. And does anybody doubt that he would have come out to pitch the 10th if we hadn't scored that infamous run to walk off? William Perry and Matt Suhey have Super Bowl touchdowns but Walter Payton doesn't. Life isn't fair.
  13. 78-84 Abreu - .282 / 55 / 134 Sale - 15-4 - 2.45 ERA Sox trade - Guerra, Lindstrom, Dunn Sox bring in - 3 bags of balls Odd prediction - PK14 plays nearly every day after the Dunn trade and finishes batting under .200
  14. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 04:05 PM) Drunk's killed it. I'm not sure if that's true but probably. The amount of sick days taken the following Tuesday had such a negative effect on the Chicago economy, that the Sox were forced to cancel the promotion. True story.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 06:32 PM) But it was flying out of Amsterdam. And the majority of passengers were Dutch
  16. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 04:33 PM) It’s a little deeper than that. They specifically mention HIS defense and fielding ability, not just the guys playing behind him. Not to mention his ability to completely shut the opponent’s running game down. Yeah, that's what I meant. His ability to field, hold on and pick off runners, and prevent stolen bases is such a big difference for a non strike out guy.
  17. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 03:59 PM) There's some guile in there, and a FIP of 4.12 for his career indicates that he's always been a good pitcher, but if he were a bad defensive player and he allowed baserunners to steal on him like crazy, his career could be very similar to that of someone like Joe Saunders instead. Ha, that's the exact same comparison I was thinking of, just got lazy and went generic instead
  18. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 02:51 PM) My favorite difference between Sale and Kershaw is the fact that Kershaw will make $164 million from 2014-2019, Chris Sale will make $56.65 million. From 2008-2014, Kershaw will have earned under $24 million ending up at over 200+ starts and a 2.54 ERA. If the Sox got anything remotely close to that from Sale, that would be outstanding.
  19. So this entire time the difference between Buehrle and your average #4/5 soft tossing lefty has been defense. Wow.
  20. Good luck to Axelrod. I liked him, it wasn't his fault the Sox had to pick up a guy off the street to start. He did what he could and probably overachieved. Maybe the NL will treat him better.
  21. Forget 2022, given today's events, maybe the US will be getting the 2018 World Cup.
  22. Latest "reports" are that Russian separatists were bragging about shooting down a Ukrainian military cargo plane.
  23. Assuming the plane was at cruising altitude, this wasn't just some foot soldier with a small piece of weaponry. This had to be a serious type of military missile owned by the government. My bet is that was just a major, major f***-up.
  24. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) Just to clarify, this is the original Malaysian plane and not a second one, right? No, this is a second one shot down today traveling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur
