QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 02:00 PM) Just out of curiosity, why do you hate the guy so much? I understand he's not Johnny Bench, but you have an unusual amount of acrimony towards the guy considering you are a pretty even-keel poster in general. I don't hate the guy, I just see zero reason why they should sign the guy right now. The team is not contending, so I'm not concerned about the upgrade to the catcher position for 3 months. It would just be a nostalgic signing IMO, and I don't really care for those when constructing a baseball roster.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 01:43 PM) I would expect the Sox to explore this ASAP. I sure as hell hope not. I'd rather call up Phegley

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 01:40 PM) And for good reason. There is absolutely zero reason we shouldn't at least make an offer to him. I think he'll find his way to a contender as a back-up, but still, no reason not to at least reach out to him. It isn't like Flowers is some guy of the future. I'd rather have AJ around working with Nieto then Flowers. I can think of at least 5 reasons. 1. He's old 2. He's suddenly not that good at baseball 3. There is zero chance he is with the team next year, so what's the point? 4. He probably wants nothing do with a bad rebuilding club and I imagine his presence in the clubhouse hurting the ball club 5. He's gonna expect to play every day so there goes any increase in Nieto's playing time

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 12:05 PM) @DarrenDreger 8 year extensions for Kane and Toews. $10.5 mil aav each. That's a lot of paper, but what are you gonna go, let em walk? Just keep rooting for the Canadian dollar so the salary cap goes up and up. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 11:08 AM) Would you all take a top ten draft pick even if it was caused Abreu having a terrible 2nd half that make people think he was "figured out". Sure, if you can guarantee that he wasn't "figured out" and he kills it in 2015.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 10:16 AM) His velocity dipped last year too. He came up throwing around 95 and was always around 92-93 last year. He's probably hurt or very close to getting hurt. His throwing motion isn't exactly good for his elbow. When will the Diamondbacks learn that the Sox only trade them injured pitchers? Hopefully never.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 11:06 AM) Ok, then I dont want to see you jacked up about Illinois football improving incrementally. Haha. You win the internet today.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 09:56 AM) ...in a loss. Which was somehow celebrated. They won 1 of 4 games, and got absolutely dominated in their last game. If not for goaltending, that would have been a 7 spot as well. The whole "they tried hard!" mentality needs to go before US soccer can be a thing. Are you really playing the "only successful end to a season is a championship" card with US Soccer in the World Cup? I get what you are trying to say, but you have to look at it realistically. I'd guess 75% of Belgium's roster played in the Champions League this year. How many Americans did? None. You want to keep improving your results, but getting to the round of 16 out of that group with this roster and some young players really contributing is a success.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 08:06 AM) There's a good chance we lose Friday & Saturday for no other reason than I am traveling to Cleveland for the weekend and will be at the games. I swear the Sox are something like 2-10 in games I've attended Oh no, sorry to hear that

When Does Flowers Get Replaced As Everyday Catcher?
LittleHurt05 replied to Feeky Magee's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I see no reason to replace him. This team is going nowhere, Nieto is not ready to play everyday. Just let T-Flo finish off the year, confirm he is not MLB material, then move on to the next one. -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 08:01 AM) The reunion show was great. True statement

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 01:42 AM) ' What is everyone's obsession with moving Abreu to DH? He's hitting fine at 1B and you don't know if DHing would affect that and he is also fine defensively out there. Unless the Sox suddenly trade for Paul Goldschmidt, I see zero reason to move Abreu from 1B.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:39 PM) Germany-Brazil today was like... what... Spurs vs. Heat, 2014 Bulls vs. Jazz, 1998 NBA Finals, Game 3 Monstars vs. Tune Squad Wehrmacht vs. Poland/France Luftwaffe vs. London Panzers vs. Shermans Hiroshima vs. Little Boy Nagasaki vs. Fat Man All of the above combined. Given how important soccer is to Brazil, that may have been the most devastating loss in the history of sports.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 03:38 PM) Insane. Neymar is good but not that good. I thought Brazil was lucky to get to where they did but this is just embarassing. That doesn't even begin to explain it. It's a World Cup Semi-Final at HOME!

WTF is going on??? I had to refresh my phone 3 times to confirm the score was legit

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 11:05 AM) Yes they can amnesty Hossa at some point if necessary. Pay his salary but won't count against the cap. I think they are allowed to use the provision twice. You are right but apparently they already used the provision twice for Montador and Olesz, so much for that. CapGeek has this nifty calculator that tells how much penalty the Hawks pay for whatever year Hossa retires. http://www.capgeek.com/recapture-calculator/ If he were to retire after 2017 when his salary bottoms out, the Hawks would have a $4.275 million cap penalty for the next four seasons. Ouch. -
I just can't pick against Brazil at home

I've been having to install & remove our car seat several teams recently, and I barely spend 5 minutes in the car and I am sweating bullets. Just the thought of sitting in the car that long makes me want to break a car seat over this guy's f***ing head.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:40 AM) You face cap penalties if a player retires early? Only the players who signed the mega cap-avoiding deals before the new CBA. From 2017-18 to 2020-21 (age 39 to 42), Hossa'a salary will be $1 million a year. The new CBA punishes teams if a player retires during that portion of the contract, which was the original plan. -
Finally caught up and finished the Challenge. What a disappointing ending. Laurel & Bananas, meh. At least Devyn managed to finish the final challenge. Her comedy was one of the only entertaining parts of the last few episodes.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:15 AM) Kane/Toews/Hossa/Crow - roughly 50% of cap. Does anyone know how the amnesty rule works in NHL? I imagine it's gonna happen in the next few years with Hossa. I believe if he retires early before 2021, the Hawks could face some major cap penalties. And the Crawford deal still sucks. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 08:50 AM) Tyler Flowers won't make it to age 34 in the big leagues. Well...we had our chances to go after guys like Suzuki and Ruiz in FA and we passed. And yet there's still not solution in sight. It's not Phegley, and reports are that Kevan Smith is raw defensively (still) as well. So time to get creative, Rick Hahn. And if they signed Ruiz, then there still wouldn't be a solution in sight. Personally, I think they might have something in Nieto, but for now he is still better served as the backup.

QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 07:16 AM) Gammons is saying tha Cards want Peavy Gammons basically works for the Red Sox so take that with a grain of salt.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 06:53 AM) Derek Jeter with a great fake out on Jason Kipnis for a double play I'd say that clinches Gold Glove #6
